Cast Your Bread upon the Waters
1 Cast thy bread upon the waters; for thou shalt find it after many days. 2 Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth. 3 If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth; and if a tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be. 4 He that observeth the wind will not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds will not reap. 5 As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, how the bones grow in the womb of her that is with child, even so thou knowest not the work of God who maketh all.
6 In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thy hand; for thou knowest not which shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good.
7 Now the light is sweet, and pleasant is it to the eyes to see the sun; 8 but if a man live many years, and rejoice in them all, yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many: all that cometh is vanity.
9 Rejoice, young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart, and in the sight of thine eyes; but know that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. 10 Then remove discontent from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh; for childhood and youth are vanity. — Ecclesiastes 11 | Literal Emphasis Translation (LET) The Literal Emphasis Bible is in the public domain. VAPOUR? | THE END OF IT (ECC. 11:1-12:14)
VAPOUR? | THE END OF IT (Ecc. 11 &12) In light of the tensions we face, the unanswered questions, the pain and joy, the disorientation we feel on a daily basis, the response the Narrator gives is, ‘keep having a faith that worships and a faith that walks'
Here’s my longer sermon notes from this morning’s Metro Christian Centre service (dated 23rd April 2023), concluding our series VAPOUR?. This series explores our search for meaning, journeying through the enigmatic book of Ecclesiastes. You can also catch up with this via MCC’s YouTube channel (just give us time to get the video uploaded). ‘My dear partner; When what’s left of you gets around…

Ecclesiastes 11:5 (NLT) - Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things.

The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd.

The Dead are Forgotten
There is no remembrance of those who were before; / And also those who will come to be afterward, for them there will be no remembrance / With those who come to be after them. — Ecclesiastes 1:11 | Recovery Version (REC) The Recovery Version of the Holy Bible © 2009 Living Stream Ministry. ┆ ┆ He looks at the controls and furrows his brows. Andrew is not one for electronics, not in the least -- this is something he’s never seen before, and it’s not as if he would be able to operate this even if it wasn’t the first time he’s looked at a computer screen. It’s too complicated.
❝ You... you’re sure you know how to operate this? ❞ he asks, not wanting to sound too accusatory, but this whole gingerbread cookie lookalike machine does not make any sense to him.
