So after I baked Eccles Cakes I was satisfied with, I shared them (the pics only unfortunately) with my sis and tried to explain the history of them and I
Couldn't find it.
They were used in some revolution? Kinda?

So, what is the deal with the world’s most conspicuously uneaten Eccles cakes? (A meta)
Well, I wouldn’t say it’s bad writing, not even the on-purpose-as-a-secret-message kind. I agree there is a visual ‘loose thread’ here that the creators wanted us to notice, but I don’t think the meaning has anything to do with Metatron or the eventual plan for S3. I think the eccles cakes are all about what’s going on in this episode with Crowley and Aziraphale, and they’re unsettling in exactly the way they’re meant to be, even if we might not register the full implications consciously on first watch.
On the most straightforward level, this shot is the punchline to a joke set up by Aziraphale and Nina in the coffee shop. Crowley orders six shots of espresso, bound to get him all worked up and stressy. Aziraphale, who desperately wants Crowley to be thinking clearly when he learns about the Gabriel situation, says to Nina: ‘What do you sell that calms people down?’ And she replies: ‘Eccles cakes.’ From this moment on the cakes are a visual symbol of what Aziraphale needs from Crowley right now.
That’s why they get so much screentime as we cross the road and go into the shop. Aziraphale won't leave those eccles cakes behind because he’s still hoping that Crowley will respond to the request they represent: Please stay calm, please be patient and listen to me with empathy.
But Crowley never does respond, and as he storms out we get that close-focus shot of the abandoned plate to make sure the subtext hits home. The cakes are framed sitting in front of the horse statue, brilliantly dressed up in Crowley's sunglasses, to remind us that they were brought there for him and he's dismissing them. (Crowley is the frantic horse who can't be managed!)
There’s another level to it, though, which doesn’t fully become clear until episode 6. The episode 1 meeting in Nina’s café is the first time that Aziraphale and Crowley share a scene in the present-day in S2, which means that the last time we saw them together was when they were dining at the Ritz. As viewers, we quickly recognise the visual language of their partnership: a table for two, a drink, a dessert. It feels familiar. But the food gets delivered and then nobody eats it. On that level, it is a set-up without a pay-off and it really niggles as you watch. S1 closed out their relationship with a happy toast after a resplendent dinner; S2 opens it with a snack that gets ignored. The dynamics of who offers food to whom are also off, atypical. It’s a sign of how things are going to go later on, hinting at the fact their dynamic is dysfunctional right now, even though it might seem OK on the surface.
Which brings me, finally, on to the other thing I’ve wanted to point out…
The punchline is that Crowley doesn’t eat the eccles cakes, but the really subconsciously disconcerting thing is that Aziraphale doesn’t. That he seemingly never planned to, and never orders anything for himself. In fact, we don’t see Aziraphale eat anything substantial in any of the present-day scenes in S2. The only things he consumes onscreen are sherry, tea, and a travel sweet. (Oh, and Manipulation Coffee, which is definitely a callback to Crowley’s disastrous sextuple-espresso.) We see him with food, yes, but primarily he wants to give it to other people.
For me this little detail of S2 – not something you even fully notice until you think about it – is a very telling understated cue in terms of Aziraphale’s post-Heaven state of mind. It's about what amuseoffyre puts so well in another meta: 'the whole series looks like he’s having so much fun doing silly human things, but there’s this brittleness to it.' At first glance, we see Aziraphale interacting with food and assume he is now living the happy Earthly life we wanted for him, but on closer inspection he's not engaging much in the pleasure of eating for his own sake. He gets a quick sweet pick-me-up on his way somewhere else in the Bentley - all alone - and that's it. He's too anxious, too busy, he doesn't have time. Crowley doesn't have time to invite him for lunch.
I find it fascinating that Gabriel gets a squillion cups of cocoa in this season, waxing all lyrical about them, and Aziraphale gets none. Aziraphale's mug becomes Jim's mug, even. And he mostly makes the tea to show Muriel how to blend in. In short, S2 Aziraphale is terribly preoccupied with looking after/managing others, and not taking the time to look after himself. Like the Maggie and Nina match-making, all that kindly treat-offering is displacement, displacement, displacement.
No wonder it all goes wrong.

Everything Is Meant (long S2 analysis, part 1)
I cannot figure out for the life of me how to make gifs so this will have to be a gif-less essay. If anyone more tech savvy than me wants to reblog with relevant media, please do!
I've seen a lot of people saying how Aziraphale's actions in the final ten minutes come out of left field and are OOC, and when I first watched the episode I felt the same, but now I think I couldn't have been more wrong. And I don't think Aziraphale is being controlled... I think the entire season showed us exactly what was going to happen.
On first watch, what struck me was the number of plot points that seemed disconnected. I couldn't figure out how Job related to the present, or the Victorian era, or the Nazi zombies (still at sea on the zombies part tbh). I didn't know where the Maggie/ Nina subplot was going, or why we were bothering with it. Then I put my "psych hat" on and it was like seeing one of those 3D pictures come into focus. It's a psychological networking rather than a plot-driven one, which is what Neil told us to expect.
Detailed analysis under the cut, with spoilers:
I went back through the season in my head and started asking myself: why is this element there? What does it contribute?
1. Start with scene one. Why include it? Does it matter for the climax that Az knew Crowley as an angel? YES. It's actually huge. Angel Crowley was joyful, he was bursting with delight at creation, he was idealistic. He wanted to be a part of everything rather than run away from it, and that's still how Aziraphale feels. He loves being a part of things. He's a joiner. He's a landlord. He dances at clubs and he makes human friends and he learns magic. Crowley the demon doesn't seem to want any of that, and I think that's hard for Az. He wants Crowley to be free of the cynicism he thinks prevents him from enjoying life now. At some level, I think he senses that Crowley is depressed (empathy's not his strong suit but I'm sure he's aware that Crowley's in a "what's the point of it all" kind of mood; see the eccles cakes scene). He wants to fix it. Aziraphale is a fixer. Metatron offers him a chance to do that.
Another thing is that Aziraphale knows Crowley ended up Falling just for asking questions that seemed innocent. That's not okay with him. He thinks that with the two of them in charge they can actually MAKE the changes that Crowley wanted to see way back at the beginning, starting with a suggestion box.
2. Okay, now Jim. Obviously Gabriel/ Jim is the central mystery, but why does he matter? First and foremost: he's there to show Aziraphale that angels can CHANGE. Gabriel terrorized and threatened Aziraphale. Az has been terrified of him. He ordered Aziraphale's execution. And now here he is, drinking hot chocolate, doing noble self-sacrificing things, with morals that suddenly align with Aziraphale's. What an absolute game-changer that must have been! He thought Heaven was unfixable, but here's Gabriel in his shop for weeks, slowly convincing him otherwise.
Then two other things happen. First, they find out that this all happened to Gabriel essentially because he fell in love. He was fired and his memories were stolen and the only reason he recovered was because Beelzebub happened to give him the one thing that could save him. That must have seemed like incredible luck. Now, how does Aziraphale feel about memories? He lives in a bookshop that is stuffed to bursting with the records of all of human history, essentially. His memories of his time with Crowley are incredibly precious. He sees, there at the end, that everything he is can be taken from him as a punishment for falling in love. Aziraphale doesn't have a magic fly container. He'd be forever robbed of Crowley, his life, himself. It's a very real threat in his mind when Metatron intervenes.
Which brings us to the second thing. Metatron saves Gabriel. Not only that, he prevents him from being punished for loving Beelzebub and lets them both go. What better way to win currency with Aziraphale? HE doesn't want to go off to Alpha Centauri, he never has, but suddenly he sees that Metatron might protect his relationship. And he's probably the only entity with the power to do so.
So we come to two conclusions: Aziraphale, when he goes off to talk with Metatron, is feeling like maybe it's not intrinsically bad to be an angel. He believed all the angels sucked, and only God was good... but now he sees that even Gabriel can change. He met Muriel, and he likes them. (He also had a huge crush on angel Crowley, which is neither here nor there but he loves Crowley in all his forms.) So if Crowley became an angel again, would that really be so bad? In his mind, it wouldn't change who Crowley is. It would just make them both safer and allow them to be together. (He's wrong! And Crowley doesn't see it that way! But this is a key miscommunication. Aziraphale doesn't really believe that becoming a demon changed Crowley. Back to the first scene, which Aziraphale references during the Job minisode. In his eyes, Crowley is the same person (just more cynical because of what's happened to him)-- so why would it matter if he's an angel again? I truly don't think he was trying to save Crowley, or saying that Crowley would be Better as an angel. To him, it doesn't matter what Crowley is. Which is reductive and harmful, but not the same as thinking Crowley needs rescuing from himself.)
Second conclusion: he sees that an angel and demon can be in love, but they have to run away to be together. Gabe and Beelz couldn't go home again. Earth is Aziraphale's home, but after the attack on the bookshop he learned that without Heaven's protection he can't really keep them safe there. Metatron says: "Come with me, do this thing, and you can have guaranteed safety AND be with the love of your life". Poor Aziraphale wants this with every fiber of his being. All he's ever wanted was for Crowley to be safe. He's never been able to offer it. Over the past four years, he thought they were safe, but he's just learned that he was wrong.

Good Omens S2 Discontinuity Roundup
Hello Good Omens fans! Did you know the Good Omens team has put a lot of work into making “errors'' in the second season? Does Aziraphale drink coffee, do you think? I keep seeing people who think he doesn't because they think he doesn't know what espresso does but he also has a regular order? Do you think there's a word thing happening here? Thanks!
Hi there. 💕 Thanks for the ask. I hope you're having a great day. There are eccles cakes for snacks tonight as it felt appropriate for this one. 😊 We've actually seen Aziraphale drink coffee back in 1.01 in the scene at The Ritz in 2008 so I'm also frequently confused by people saying that they think he doesn't know what coffee is. Seems a bit of a stretch... Yeah, I think there's a wordplay thing happening in the Six Shots of Espresso scene that might be at the root of the coffee confusion.
Let's look at what coffee is in Good Omens and Aziraphale's joke around the word calm.
When we use calm today, we mean a sense of peace and relaxation. The word comes from the Greek kauma, though, which originally meant heat, as well as the Latin calere, which meant to feel hot.
To that end? Something that is calm in Ineffable Husbands Speak is something that brings about a sense of peace and relaxation through heat, which is a way to describe not just a hot cup of coffee but, also, well... sex. But why is Aziraphale describing sex when they're ordering coffee?
Let's back up and look at Crowley's very laced-with-their-vocabulary coffee order:
Take a big cup. Put six shots of espresso into it. Nothing else.
Big: Original definitions: generous; powerful, strong; a great man.
Cup: For a such little word, it has an unexpectedly fun history. A cup is a drinking vessel, yes. It also meant a ship's hull at one point. These two and their fish-and-the-sea stuff... Even more amusing, it also once meant a beehive. Later on in S2, we get Crowley explaining the angels = bees analogy to Muriel that holds up within Crowley & Aziraphale's speak in different scenes as well. Additionally, there's cup as a verb-- to cup, as in to take something in hand with the hand in a curved, cup-like shape. Crowley cupping a cup as visual innuendo in the pub scene in S2:
The word cup also contains the word up.
Up = Heaven/angels/Aziraphale.
Contrast with Aziraphale then replying with "does it calm you down?"
Big Cup = Aziraphale.
So, what does Crowley feeling like doing with the big cup he'd like to take this morning? Putting six shots of espresso into it.
Six shots: Six, from the Latin verb sex. Aziraphale as The Great Beast joke from the Odegra scene. 666 aka The Mark of the Beast in S1 was the literal numbers and part of Adam's phone number. In S2, it's the Latin verb root of the word six-- so, it's sex, sex, sex... 😂
Shots -- form of measurement for two euphemistic beverages in Good Omens: alcohol and coffee.
Shots contains hot (self-explanatory) and hots, the slang for peppers, which Aziraphale also uses to describe Crowley in a couple of different ways in Demon's Guide to Angelic Beings. It was also part of Aziraphale's "sitting on it" sword joke to Crowley in S1 where the handle looked like a pepper grinder.
[On the story's overall wordplay level, as opposed to within Crowley and Aziraphale's speak, there is also that Crowley's paralleling character in The Them is Pepper.]
Espresso: Coffee. Literally translated: fast coffee. Also contains press, a word that overlaps food and seamstress euphemistic speak-- so, a little nod towards Mrs. Sandwich. You press clothes with an iron. You make a hot sandwich with a panini press. Something that is urgent-- like a very in-the-mood demon who knows something is irritatingly wrong and would rather they be meeting for breakfast as a date without any problems and so is ordering sexually euphemistic coffee-- is a pressing matter. 😉
Nothing else: You can leave it at nothing else alone and it works but it's also: know thin elks. To know in the old, religious sense is to know someone "biblically"-- to be sleeping with someone-- which is how Crowley uses it still in the context of their speak: "Just enough of a bastard to be worth knowing."/"He's just an angel I know."/"We've known each other a long time."/what he says to Aziraphale when he thinks they're going to die in S1: "It was nice knowing you."
I've noticed a few instances of the word thin and/or words containing it referring to Crowley, with this being one of them. Elks are a kind of deer native to North America, a little joke on the fact that they're in the American-themed Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death. Their whole horses thing (and every other animal thing basically lol) is also a deer thing. Deer is homophonic for dear. "My dear" and "My dear fellow" are also "my deer" and "my deer fellow."
Nothing else = Know Thin Elks = Crowley self-proclaiming himself the thin, American deer who'd like to break fast, err, breakfast lol with some biblical knowledge with the angelic big cup.
Shout out to Nina Sosanya (the actress, not the character) for being able to not just laugh through this. The hand gestures are, unintentionally on the part of the character, Crowley's euphemistic order as well: Six aka sex. Being one. Bigggggg cup. 🤭
So, basically, the coffee confusion comes from Aziraphale's response to Crowley's coffee order-- so, let's look at that. Crowley's coffee order with Nina means to her that he wants a literal big cup filled with six shots of literal espresso but, to Aziraphale, it's putting in a request for sex using the coffee euphemistically. Crowley said he wanted to take the big cup and fill it with some shots of espresso mmhmm, to which Aziraphale then replied:
That sounds fun. Does it calm you down?
The big cup is game to know the thin elk 😉 and he has some words for him in return, even if he's joking by pretending that they're really only talking about Crowley's literal coffee order.
Sound is what you hear so Aziraphale's acknowledging that he hears the wordplay and knows that Crowley is pressed for more than espresso at the moment. He heard the Ineffable Husbands Speak happening. A sound is also a body of water and was a word that originally also meant the act of swimming, so we've got some extra of their favorite sexual metaphor-- fish-and-the-sea/bodies-of-water-- in here as well.
We already looked at how calm means relaxing through heat above. Aziraphale asks if it-- both the coffee order and the "coffee order"-- calms Crowley down, responding to Crowley's use of up within cup as descriptive for Aziraphale. Neither of them are actually working for Heaven or Hell anymore, nor do they really see one another as like the other angels and demons, but it's a shorthand.
Up and down are also fun words because of the fact that they often are used in slang kind of interchangeably-- to get on up and to get down can mean the same thing, for example. The tagline for S2 is a joke around that as well: something's going down in The Up. Something going down is something happening but the something that is happening is also that angels are going down. (Might also be something to keep in mind then about the last shot of the season being Aziraphale seeming to go Up and how that really can still very much mean that he's ultimately what's going down.)
You could also, if you're of mind to, take the 'calm you down' to be something Aziraphale has in mind as well, centered around the meaning of going down that doesn't involve an elevator or stairs, if you see where I'm going with this? Given how the scene ends, I think Crowley probably heard that bit as we'll look at in a second...
Aziraphale, knowing Nina does not know the root of the word calm, nor that he and Crowley are speaking their cant vocabulary in front of her and what calm means in that vocabulary, then asks Nina a question:
This is meant to amuse Crowley because calm, to Nina, means something that's relaxing and can help mellow someone out, while calm, in Ineffable Husbands Speak, incorporates the heat-related roots of the word to make it mean something that induces a state of peace and relaxation through heat-- so, something that's sexy.
As a result, Aziraphale has set it up so that almost anything that Nina could say in response to this would be amusing to him and Crowley because, while they know she doesn't understand what they're saying beneath the surface, what she says in response here is, in that speak, as if whatever she's saying is the sexiest thing she sells.
I'm of the opinion that Aziraphale, in mentioning things that are calm, is trying to get Nina to offer him a form of tea that Aziraphale can then turn into an equally sexually euphemistic order of his own. (There are a couple of uses of tea that way in other scenes and Aziraphale had also ordered tea in the date they didn't end up having in the sushi scene in 1.01.) But Nina surprises Aziraphale with her response.
Aziraphale didn't take into account that Nina won't offer him tea because it seems too logical a choice. He's an older Englishman to Nina, so, wouldn't he just ask for tea, if that's what he wants? To her, he must be looking for something calming that is not tea. She has a quick think about it and, both unintentionally and amusingly, comes up with the one thing that she sells that not only calms people down in the way that Nina understands calm to mean-- chills them out and makes them happy-- but is also calm by Crowley and Aziraphale's standards-- chills them out and makes them happy but with an element of sex.
What Nina doesn't realize is the history of eccles cakes, which, ironically, really do meet the definition of calming people down in a sexy way by Crowley and Aziraphale speak standards. They were once banned in England for being thought of as food of the devil because they were so sinfully delicious. This scene will also probably be even funnier after S3 because, historically, eccles cakes tie to 1650-- one of the years mentioned by Aziraphale in the Apology Dance scene. If we get that flashback in S3, eccles cakes could wind up having additional layers of meaning to Crowley and Aziraphale that would add even more to this scene in S2.
Either way, Crowley and Aziraphale lived through that history, so it's already funny then that Aziraphale, in response, looks at Crowley and just says:
So, yeah, Aziraphale does know what espresso is and what caffeine is and was joking with Crowley about how he might have been ordering some calm with Aziraphale but what he ordered from Nina was anxiety in a mug.
We actually saw Aziraphale and Crowley drink coffee at The Ritz in 2008 in S1. Aziraphale's mug indicates that he was drinking a cappuccino or a latte, which are both espresso-based drinks. Crowley was not having six shots of espresso with nothing else at that moment. He was having maybe a third of that, tops, in a dessert coffee that was light enough to have milk or cream of it and may or may not have also contained alcohol. Mr. Six Shots of Espresso in a Big Cup doesn't always take his coffee that way, ah... both literally and euphemistically. 😉
They're visible on the table here:
Aziraphale's large oat milk latte with a dash of almond syrup is his usual order at Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death... which is a creepy thing for Whoever Derek Jacobi is Playing to know, I agree. It's another indication that he drinks coffee regularly. Aziraphale knows Nina not just from The Whickber Street Shopkeepers and Traders Association but because her shop is right across the street from where he lives and works so it's where he goes to get the coffee that he drinks to a point of having an usual order.
Nina doesn't know Crowley at the start of the Six Shots of Espresso scene and is surprised to see an additional twist to the bookseller's suddenly surprisingly interesting and wild sex life being that, in addition to The Naked Man Friend, the bookseller apparently has a fella-- this charming ginger with the bizarrely intense morning coffee order. Nina doesn't know Crowley because Crowley and Aziraphale don't do mornings in an effort to not get caught. Crowley's gone before dawn. Mrs. Sandwich knows about them because she works at night outside the bookshop's side door; Nina does not because she works beginning in the early mornings across the street.
The know thin elks bit-- when elks are wapitis, which means "light-colored deer"-- is then even funnier when Nina unintentionally uses an idiom that goes along with Crowley and Aziraphale's wordplay to describe Aziraphale in this scene: You're a dark horse, Mr. Fell.
Aziraphale as dark (also: d'ark and contains ark, so: of The Ark/The Flood) and Crowley as light (of stars and fire; light in weight; light as truth; lightens burdens and brightens up Aziraphale's world with humor, and so on) are also in the wordplay in 1941, where they are rather adorably inverting their own visuals when flirting with one another:
Aziraphale doesn't just mean he'd miss coffee-the-beverage when he tells Whichever Villain Derek Jacobi Is Playing that he doesn't want to go back to Heaven. Aziraphale is obviously not saying it directly but is thinking about the much more pressing problem:
Where would he get his coffee, ya dig?
Coffee is coffee itself. Coffee is freedom in general, especially the kind that comes from the American-themed Give Me Coffee or Give Me Death. But coffee is also sex-- free, liberated sex, in particular. The choice to live as Aziraphale pleases, for him, is centered around his life on Earth with Crowley and going to Heaven means he would lose that. Coffee is not much different from the use of alcohol in the same way in S1 as Crowley was talking about how Armageddon happening and Aziraphale stuck in Heaven and separated from Crowley and the two of them not having their life on Earth would mean they wouldn't be able to be together:
"Not too big on wine in Heaven, are they? Or single-malt scotch. Or frou frou cocktails with little umbrellas..."
All that then making it funnier that, upon hearing that there's a "not technically" Naked Man Friend in the bookshop, Crowley's literal drink order arrives at the table. Even though Crowley knows that there's some kind of situation happening here that isn't anything worth being jealous over, he's definitely not missing an opportunity to tease Aziraphale a bit over whatever's going on a little.
Turns out that Aziraphale isn't the only one who can make a show of eating and drinking. There's an awful lot of tongue in that big cup...
Connected scene: "A sherry for me, please."
Sherry: A light wine, usually drunk before a meal to stimulate the appetite. Homophone: the French cheri, meaning dear. Aziraphale ordered a Crowley-esque wine to drink it in front of him.

Trickery Post #3 - Objects
With these sideburns ideas happening as I wrote my series of posts on them being what they are and doing what they do, I started to notice some things.
If you recall, I remarked on a Reddit thread that talked about Crowley having something like a perception filter as a head canon rather than a theory.
The idea seemed to fit my own findings because of how other characters respond to Crowley when they do.
I thought...maybe...Crowley needs a password for other characters to interact with him or even see him. For example, the password could be something like the location, his intent to meet Shax, and him holding the newspaper, in the park.
If he addresses the person in question, that already handles things. It's more for what makes him approachable by others.
Truth be told, I think Crowley is invisible to humans by default, but I've never fully analyzed the clues making me think that to my satisfaction. That's more like a head canon than what I consider a good, strong theory. Even if I were right, there are so many ways around it, that it doesn't amount to much in the end. Well, relatively speaking. It's the type of thing that led me to so much below, so it amounts to something in that sense.
A lot of my exploration of this password idea started with me wanting to do a post on Crowley's sight and how it works, but you know, I didn't quite know how his sight works.
Does he only see a person if they're holding an object with the intent to show it to him? What about the guy in the park feeding the ducks? Is it counting as intent because he's a spy wanting to be seen as just some guy feeding ducks in the park? What about Gabriel with the yellow feather duster? There are no sunglasses, but do I have to concern myself with the lacking intent before the feather duster is shown?
It got ridiculous to consider every conceivable object in every conceivable line of sight situation with every conceivable level of intention. Knowing me, I'll try it one day, but it wasn't that day or any of the days near it, and such a day hasn't happened since.
I did note in a draft I never published that Crowley says he's going to wait for Maggie and Nina to be near an awning, when describing his Operation Lovebirds plan to Gabriel. Crowley did not say he would wait until he saw them near an awning, so maybe he senses being instead of seeing. Well, I never published the draft, and Crowley does use words as if he sees regularly. He says "look" and "saw". It doesn't change my mind on his sight being special and different, but he does generally treat it the same with his wording sometimes.
So, with some limits in my approach, I instead just got far enough to know that the reflections in his sunglasses matter, especially at the end of episode 6.
If you've never noticed, when Crowley enters his car the end of episode 6, moving reflections can be found in the lenses of his sunglasses.
The story is trying to make sure you notice those reflections because they are so...active. The people are moving. Aziraphale and Muriel are not shown as moving when they are reflected earlier in the story. The same went for a part of the ball where I thought Mrs. Cheng was in the sunglasses. But these humans passing by outside the car are moving. What could that mean?
I didn't know, but still, I started to pick up on a pattern with these potential passwords for whether or not a character could interact with Crowley.
Touch after touch after touch. Object after object after object. Crowley had a newspaper in the park. Shax had a mirror. The human visitor had a briefcase. Crowley and Shax had phones in the street. Both he and Aziraphale touched that plate of Eccles cakes that disappeared.
But wait.
Wait a minute.
In the Final Fifteen, they kiss, right? That's an intense special mouth touch of affection.
But that's not all.
Crowley touches his sunglasses, yes, but he doesn't touch any of the other objects in the bookshop, like the bell he touched in episode 1.
Aziraphale's behavior is much the same. He doesn't touch any books. He doesn't touch that bell either.
Neither one of them sit in a chair, so that type of touch is also avoided.
They touch each other with the kiss, including their hands on the other's clothing in the embrace itself.
But they avoid the touches otherwise.
Plus, they kissed over that magic circle rug.
They refuse to go to the private room.
Something about that scene has them both sensing or feeling that whatever they think or feel in whatever is going on, they must stay where they are. That scene has to happen when and where it happens.
So, I wrote a post, not about passwords but tangibility and called it Tangibility Thing. I remarked that there was something relevant about the touches and a mix of memories trying to carry the characters from one scene to the next.
It wasn't just Crowley and his touches on objects or people talking to him. Other characters do it too.
With further speculation, I revisited thoughts on his angry lightning walk in episode 1. As stated, by this point, I suspected Aziraphale was pretending to be Crowley. In particular, I suspected it was mainly the cut when he avoided the cardboard box.
The next cut is blurry, so I didn't yet know if it's still him or back to Crowley, but I could tell the plate of Eccles cakes was avoided.
I can't find the source for the life of me, but I know someone else thought Gabriel was pretending to be Crowley in the cut before the possible Aziraphale-Crowley. I dismissed it at the time since the emphatic shoulder movement helped draw my attention to the idea of Aziraphale pretending to be Crowley passing by that cardboard box.
Maybe...the box and the plate were touched and that was the edit? Crowley tends to ask questions, but there is this fake form of him very much not asking questions about that cardboard box. Maybe he did question it and things happened, and whatever those things were had to be hidden, so we got this edit instead.
I worked with the tangibility idea further over time as I continued making my sideburns posts.
Finally, I noted the phrase, "Earthly Objects" in a post and speculated on possible rules the characters have to follow to move the story forward. The phrase "earthly object" is in one of the scenes in the show after an extensive touching sequence, so I felt it appropriate to give the idea a name. I further speculated that lacking earthly objects or avoided earthly objects could be the tells of the possible story edits.
That part with Crowley angrily walking out of the bookshop was like "rule breaking" because of the lacking touches.
I commented on how Crowley manages passing the keys with Muriel around looks more like "rule following". The scene is made to look like Crowley has to get Muriel to touch something after Muriel broke the rules with their intrusion and Crowley has to get those keys to Aziraphale without Muriel looking at the pass. Aziraphale knows, and that's part of why he looks so turned on. Crowley is the master of this game at work. It's more about Crowley's coded, "I love you," but I still like to add in that extra bit of admiring his play in the game.
When I first posted about this rule following, I remarked on Crowley knowing exactly what he is doing because he waited for Muriel to have that notepad. Not long after, I realized things are even more precise than that. If you check frame by frame, you can see he's actually timing the toss based on a few frames after Muriel's eye movement to the notepad, not just the act of getting out the notepad.
Further speculation went that the phrase Crowley uses of, "Looking where the furniture isn't," in episode 5 wasn't about just furniture you find in a house. It was about the objects. The earthly objects are like the furniture on Earth, so that's why they should be watched carefully.
Someone actually reblogged with a comment on my post, which was nice. I mainly got likes if I got any engagement at all with my posts.
Then I edited some of my sideburns posts.
Then someone else commented on my posts. They actually sounded like they believed me about the invisibility idea for Heaven! They brought up things I hadn't considered for when Crowley is at the door to his car, so I didn't really know and speculated and stuff. Many, many thanks to that person (@archangelween). They thanked me for the work I did and informed me no one else was looking at the touching and the thresholds along with some advice about what I might want to look at myself.
Normally I don't like unsolicited advice, but I don't think I even took much notice I got some since I was overwhelmed with their questions I could not answer and ideas rushing in and just being generally stunned and kinda excited that someone actually believed me about the invisibility idea. And thanked me for my efforts!
See, one of the things I thought the stillness might do, for the car at the end of episode 6 and the park at the start of episode 1, is allow Crowley to be sensed or seen. But...was he invisible and if he wasn't, what's the difference between what he's doing there and what he's doing in Heaven? There are differences, but I didn't explore them too far in-depth, and it would be awhile before a certain part I would later consider relevant occurred to me. I acknowledged that when Crowley looked at Nina after Aziraphale left, Crowley looked first, so that might be another part of it.
I was also going back and forth with myself on the visibility thing with Heaven and the music shop. I can't remember how long it took before I finally figured that, based on the framing of showing Crowley on screen with Mr. Arnold at times, Aziraphale, and Aziraphale probably checking for the longer sideburns, it made more sense for Crowley to be visible to Mr. Arnold and Aziraphale after all.
I kept working on the earthly objects idea.
Eventually, I grew to refer to it as "like a game," just as I did the sideburns thing. I made a post shortly before Christmas (December 23, 2023) about Earthly Objects, listing the post as a main point of reference. I left for a Michigan trip soon after and knew I might not even be able to make posts while I was gone yet still so very much into wanting to make them and keep playing with these ideas.
I referenced a quote from Crowley when he says to the demons in episode 5, "You can't just manifest and cause trouble, there are rules." I really do think it's a clue about this Earthly Objects idea.
I guessed at potential rules. The touches and certain dialogue options were like necessary points, scored points, to have a scene, with a high preference to the beginning of a scene. I speculated on two points for interaction scenes and supernatural beings having limits because their miracles would not count. I remarked that Crowley is astoundingly impressive at how he plays this game compared to everyone else because while I didn't get everything, I got that he did things with thresholds other characters don't. After all, there was the car door thing and the bigger thresholds thing. I listed physical earthly objects. I knew there was something different about doors and Crowley's sunglasses because of thresholds for at least the former, still unsure of how the latter actually worked.
I referred to the sequence in episode 1, where Crowley angrily walks out of the bookshop, as basic rule breaking. I referred to the being passing by the cardboard box as a Likely Fake Crowley who is probably Aziraphale.
I thought about what might be happening in the Final Fifteen. I theorized that the stuff happening there was also rule breaking.
My initial take was something like Crowley and Aziraphale were trying to break the rules of the game in every way they could. Their kiss "wouldn't count" because they are both supernatural beings. I don't remember if I said they were trying to break out of the game, but I was thinking along those lines.
I couldn't really explain what was going on any better than when I first watched GO2, but it at least felt like the not-touching for earthly objects was intentional.
Now, there was a special little something found with all this exploring and questioning of these passwords that turned into earthly object rules and touches and points.
I don't know if I had to add it very quickly or not, but all the same, I had a section I named "Bonus Round".
Below is mostly the text, but I will now add some GIFs to help demonstrate things.
~BEGIN BONUS ROUND ENHANCED RE-ENACTMENT~
Look, I obsess over David Tennant being Crowley because he is so beautifully perfect for the role, so I am definitely super biased in everything here.
Allow me to attempt demonstrating to you how mind-blowing Crowley is at this game. We're not going to know if what I think happened, really happened, because I don't understand the rules the way he does. Here is what I think happened. He did three threshold-only touches while entering the coffee shop in episode 1. What does that accomplish? Why would he do that? I don't know!
Am I sure? Absolutely not.
The car arrives, and Crowley places only part of his foot on the edge of the sidewalk. The heel does not touch the street, and the toes don't touch the sidewalk. Theoretical threshold-only touch #1.
...
The camera pans up, and then you see his fingers on the side panel of his door that just so happen to only get maybe the window frame and not the window itself. It's blurry, but that's the best I can do. I also have to check frame by frame because it's too fast otherwise. So, if the window is the earthly object but not its frame, then we're good. Theoretical threshold-only touch #2.
...
He closes the door, steps forward, does a spin, and then walks toward the coffee shop.
...
When he gets to the door, you know that his hand should be above the lock, and maybe it's a blurry gray thing, but it's so hard to tell. It's blurry. He's moving too fast. Even if he is touching it, he is covering it completely with his hand. Since he covers it up fully, does it somehow not count? If so, then you can tell that his fingers are on the door panel only while his thumb is on the indentation of that panel connected to the window. The thumb is barely touching the window...I think. By all logic, it should because of its position. Does it matter that it's the thumb? How it's positioned to the other fingers? There is a rule on thumbs?! Is that why he does what he does with pockets? We don't know! It's ineffable after all. But Crowley knows! This character knows what he is doing in this game, and that looks like an effort to not be touching earthly objects on his way in. Theoretical threshold-only touch #3.
For some reason, he saves the two points for the arm on the back of the chair and the question, "Right. What's the problem?"
The music and the camera work is really impressive in the whole thing, in my opinion. The story wants us to see that sequence in that way. What a beautiful entrance.
He's playing this game in tandem with his sideburns scheme, and there, he is definitely using thresholds to his advantage....
~END BONUS ROUND ENHANCED RE-ENACTMENT~
That's the first time I can find my usage of the phrase "sideburns scheme" for what was happening with the sideburns.
Something the above lacks is that I eventually added in some speculation that it could be for next-level bonus supernatural points.
With the hand on the door panel, I did start to consider the park scene with how Crowley manages his fingers on the newspaper. Maybe the reason Crowley got away with the door touch in the coffee shop was that he used three digits, and three is more than half of the five available digits on a hand.
So, now we have the longer sideburns thing with the car door and the bigger thresholds. Then there's this beautiful bonus round for entering the coffee shop when Crowley has short sideburns. That's three things we've got related to thresholds and Crowley.
Speaking of the number 3, while on my Michigan trip, I still explored the ideas nagging at my head and started to notice the 3s...well, everywhere. There are three earthly objects are in Before the Beginning, not two. Of the three, one of them is touched through a miracle and not physically. In episode 1, the lightning hits the door three different times. The recovery of that lightning power hits the door three times. Three just kept showing up.
So, I eventually decided interaction sets must actually require a three, if we really are having a score with actual points happening. Supernatural beings were more available for touches than I thought, based on how things went in Before the Beginning. Miracles on earthly objects actually did count as touches for them to earn points. Supernatural beings can even generate their own earthly things to touch or be touched by. It took me awhile to realize that also they can indeed touch each other for these theoretical points.
It was probably still awhile before I committed to saying I agreed with the Gabriel-Crowley idea when Crowley angrily walked out of the bookshop, but I did eventually accept and agree with it.

By now, it looks so obvious to me, but it didn't always. Like I said, I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I think the face has this sort of hardness to it that's not really Crowley. I'm not sure that's really the word I want, or if there are better ones, but I can't come up with anything better on my own.
For his shoulder movement, after my own studying it for making this post, I think what Gabriel-Crowley is doing is that he's taking bigger strides in the walk. With the bigger strides, the shoulder movement looks all the more exaggerated to help compare with the stiff movement of Aziraphale-Crowley in the next cut.

Getting back to those thresholds, I had a sense for the next question I was working on: Are Crowley's sunglasses a door?
We'll explore that idea further next time. I remember this play partly because I was in Michigan while I tried to sort it out. It was rather difficult because I worked in Google docs and with my iPad since my PC was all the way at home. I did not have a way to check videos frame by frame. I was still so into this game idea, I resorted to whatever I had available.

Boy, oh, boy this hit close to home. So basing a lot of the house descriptions/holiday traditions on my family.

Great Room - the spare room usually adjacent to the living room, typically where the foyer enters into.
There was a lot you couldn’t tell your family. How your husbands were actually ethereal beings well over six thousand years old, how Aziraphale found a miracle that would help you to live forever alongside them, or how Crowley was the serpent they so often cursed in Sunday Service. But there was one thing you made crystal-fucking-clear, your name and gender identity. You came out as non-binary almost four years ago, telling your family how you wanted them to refer to you in only neutral terms.
You had met Aziraphale and Crowley a year after that, marrying them in secret two years later, just the past spring. Crowley had told you how they used all pronouns, so your favorite pastime was to call him your wife when using he/him pronouns. Aziraphale told you that he preferred he/him but wasn’t opposed to they/them if it was to put a bigot in place. That if he chose to present as a woman again for the first time in thousands of years then he would update such choices. Just a small family the three of you were.
Meeting them had been perfect for your mental health, you weren’t ready to date anyone, and a rainy day led to you stepping into the red and gold bookshop, with plants scattered about, books older than time itself, an angel and a demon running it. And they took you in without a second thought.
“Darling, you seem lost in thought,” Aziraphale broke you from your thoughts, your bottom lip sore from chewing it in stress. “What is it that troubles you?” You looked at him in the rear view mirror, smiling softly as you felt Crowley’s hand on your thigh.
“Just nervous, and feeling bad. I want to tell them about us, all three of us, and yet I’m too scared…” your family wasn’t the most open to anything outside of heteronormative, including polyamory unfortunately, leaving Aziraphale to be the “best friend/co-worker”, he had actually volunteered the title, saying it would look better for Crowley to be your husband since he appeared closer to your age than the white haired Angel did.
“Don’t fret, I know it’s not ideal, but we can pretend for one night.” Aziraphale reassured, his blue eyes seeming brighter despite the dim light in the Bentley.
“We’re here, love.” Crowley said, parking behind your uncle’s familar white SUV. “You two ready?” You looked over to Crowley and nodded, unbuckling and turning back in your seat to give Aziraphale his final kiss of the night.
Immediately you wanted to slink back into the Bentley when you heard a chorus of your deadname being yelled through the house, directing Aziraphale to the dessert table to place the Eccles cake while you set down the ancient wine bottle with the other drinks.
“This is Anthony,” you introduced your husband to your family, he was dressed in their gray button up with his red tie, black blazer and slacks. “And this is our dearest friend Azira.” Aziraphale was done up in his usual outfit except he traded out the faded waistcoat for a newer one.
“What a pity we couldn’t attend the wedding, but I suppose (s)he’s always done things his/her own way.” Your mom said, feigning innocence as your hand tightened on Crowley’s.
“Ah, yes, I suppose that’s what drew me to them. Their fierce determination.” Crowley glared slightly, a faux grin on her lips as they enunciated your pronouns. That was how the night would continue, both Crowley and Aziraphale determinedly trying to correct your family through their own speech.
“That’s it!” Aziraphale was the first to snap, seeing tears in your eyes as he sat across from you at the dining table, luckily the children were eating in the great room, the tv playing football flickered at his outburst. “I have absolutely had it with you lot misgendering them! They told you four years ago that they preferred gender neutral terms and informed you of their very legal name change, what is so hard to accept?”
When your mom went to speak, Crowley interrupted. “Nope, wrong answer there, see it’s not that hard, maybe in the beginning, to adjust, to try. But you lot never tried, did you? Instead our partner here is almost in tears, they were stressed about even coming, but unlike you all, they value you. And yes, I said our partner. Azira is not just a friend, in fact he’s as much their husband as I am.” Crowley rose from her chair and offered you their hand, which you gratefully took, letting him guide you out of the house with Aziraphale following behind you.
“I’m sorry, that was improper and I know that-” Aziraphale stammered out, feeling like he messed up but being cut off when you suddenly hugged him, laughing softly against his shoulder.
“Don’t you dare apologize, did you see their faces? That was so worth it, I have you two, and we’re a big enough family for me.” Aziraphale hugged you back tightly and kissed the side of your head, you felt Crowley press against your back, joining your hug and kissing Aziraphale.
“Happy Christmas, loves.”
“Happy Christmas, dear.”

S1E1 S2E1
Here's something else I've been working on -- because I have ADHD and too many things have caught my attention. The first episode of season 1 and the first episode of season 2 of Good Omens have some creepy parallels, but the rest of the episodes don't seem to. ??? I don't know what it means, but here are my notes on it so you can go nuts with me.
There it is. What's happening here? I don't know. Have we been given Clues here? I feel like yes, though I'm not entirely sure what Clues.
The red eyes as represented by lights throughout S2 are probably demonic, but I already thought they were Crowley when he's hidden. What does it mean that Crowley locks Nina and Maggie in with a lightning strike, and Hastur destroys the convent with a lightning strike? The eccles cakes left by the horse statue at the same time as Famine in the restaurant? Do they mean anything, or are they just fun parallels?
I had thought that I might be able to find the missing scenes that belong opposite The Resurrectionists minisode by comparing season 1 to season 2, but so far the only solid parallels are in the first episode of each season. There are other parallels, but they're scrambled around and don't match up time-wise.
Is that a Clue? Are more scenes messed up than just the missing ones from opposite The Resurrectionists? If I match the parallels up, will that give me a key to unscramble them? And if I can unscramble the scenes, will that give me the missing scenes that belong opposite The Resurrectionists? But if I'm meant to unscramble scenes, I feel like I'll need a LOT more parallels.
I'm in over my head.

The Altar of Eccles Cakes
(updated 21 Oct 2023, for Grain Offerings example) (updated 21 Nov 2023, for link to First Temptation)
The mysterious plate of Eccles cakes. Are they really to "calm people down?' And why do they just ...disappear? They must be there for a reason?
Yes, they certainly are. They are just the first course of a fascinating meal on offer in S2.
So far, most of the meta around the Eccles cakes has focused on the meaning of their name. Eccles is an old name for church. We could view it as Aziraphale trying to calm Crowley down. They are also known as "squashed fly cakes." The white outside and the black inside could be seen as a metaphor relating to Gabriel. Or it hints at the Roger the Stunt Fly, that contain Gabriel's memories, flying around the book shop, who's purpose we don't find out about until the end. There is even a link to the 1650 Sorry Dance that Aziraphale mentioned, in that were banned by Oliver Cromwell for being pagan! (Did I get that right? I've not kept the post link.)
[Edit: They also represent the First Temptation as Jesus fasts in the wilderness for 40 days before the Entry into Jerusalem at the start of the Passion narratives, where bread was made from stones.]
Take another look at the blocking in this shot. The dark horse statue, representing Crowley - even wearing his sunglasses! - has the placating plate of Eccles cakes placed before it, in supplication. Yeah, it didn't work this time, but it's the thought that counts. What we have here is Aziraphale making an Sin offering to the altar of Crowley, to ask for atonement in advance for what he has done (taking Gabriel in.)
Once you frame it in that reference, you realize its not the only altar offering made during S2. It also adds a bit more depth to some of the other scenes, where they have all been mentioned already in some way, but it certainly helps to explain the Eccles cakes!
Firstly, we need to mention the main types of altar offering that are made:
Burnt offerings - for general atonement of sins and for expression of devotion to God. It could be a bull, a ram, goat, or a bird in the form of a dove or pigeon. Such as this magnificent example in the Job minisode.
Aziraphale certainly devoted himself to the sin of gluttony on that occasion. (hang on, that didn't come out the right way, did it...?) But he was still devoted to God, despite his nocturnal conversation with Crowley while they waited out the storm in the cellar.
Grain offerings - a voluntary expression of devotion to God. This was grain prepared in different way, but always seasoned, unsweetened and unleavened. Recall at Gomorrah Lot offered to prepare the visiting angels unleavened bread as part of a meal.
Originally when I wrote this post I didn't think I had any Grain offering examples, but a few days later as I was writing my post on The Ineffable Ducks I realized where the missing S2 Grain offering was - in S2E1, when Crowley yells at the Azerbaijani spies in St James Park. The ducks are usually offered bread, which is leavened with yeast, so technically not quite correct, but when you review all the instances of feeding the ducks crumbs or bread crumbs it certainly fits. Unless you are Crowley, and you'd rather have the current state of quiet "frozen peas" between Heaven and Hell. See my Ineffable Ducks post for an elaboration.
Peace offering - This could be cattle, sheep or goat without defect, but the main purpose to was consecrate a meal between two or more parties before God and share that meal in a fellowship of peace and commitment to each other's future prosperity.
You know where we see one of these? At the eldritch ball!
I did see a nice meta about the vol-au-vents recently, mainly about their name, but I don't seem to have saved it, and can't find it again. They are usually filled with chicken (a bird) and the eldritch ball is ostensibly the shopkeepers monthly meeting, after all, where they are there to talk about their mutual prosperity in the future. Just so happens its also an opportunity for Aziraphale to talk to Crowley about their future...oh, and Nina and Maggie's, as well, of course!
Sin offering - atonement or unintentional sin. It would have the elements of a Burnt offering, as well as a Peace offering, but not be shared. These are what the plate of Eccles cakes are, so they were never meant to be eaten. They were an olive branch to Crowley regarding Gabriel, but he turned it down. So they softly and suddenly vanish away, never to be met with again.*
There is one more altar offering that needs to mentioned, another Sin offering. The one Crowley consumed in Elspeth's place in The Resurrectionists minisode in 1832 Edinburgh - the laudanum.
It pretty clear to most observers that Crowley did a good and "kind deed" for Elspeth here, which angered Hell in the process and then he was dragged forcibly downstairs to be duly punished for it. There is a post here from atlas-hope that suggests this is a parallel of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, drinking the cup of God's wrath to absolve Christians of their sins. They point out the laudanum is even poured into a goblet. Crumbs, that's a hefty bit of spiritual lifting, dear demon. What were you thinking, Anthony J. Crowley? It might cast that conversation you had with the carpenter back on the mountain in a new light, or least make us look back twice at it. (Plenty of time for contemplation before S3 arrives...)
Remember, a Sin offering has elements of both a Burnt offering and a Peace offering: a giant Crowley gets Elspeth to promise to devote the rest of her life to being "properly good, not just pretendy good" and the money Aziraphale is forced to donate to her ensures her future prosperity. Sounds like a win-win situation there, Elspeth!
[*OK, if you don't get the ref, its from the Hunting of the Snark. The Snark represents happiness, a most elusive thing to find, and more often than not its a fruitless search, and you find the terrible Boojum instead. During the third verse the Baker recounts the lecture his uncle gives him about how to hunt the Snark, and to be aware of his fate if he is unlucky enough to encounter a Boojum. It kind of fits in with S2, I feel.]

In this post, I'm going to tie numerous observations on screen together to make a single season 3 prediction
it relies on this premise, which i'm about to build a case for:
the way the characters interact with the story is informed by the mythical/historical figures they are directly and indirectly coded as, but it’s not always in the way you’d expect, and some characters are coded in more than one way. we can still use these relationships as Clues to postulate where the story might go and how the characters will interact with one another.
this is by no means exhaustive, obviously. i’ve seen people say that Crowley is coded as Jesus, Aziraphale as Mary, and numerous other figures. i’m just pointing out some things i’ve noticed that I haven’t seen brought up as often.
we’ll start with Crowley, then go on to Sandalphon and Saraqael, then Gabriel, then Aziraphale. yes, it'll all lead up to something and i chose these characters in this order for a reason.
Crowley
so we obviously know he’s coded as Ashtoreth when he dresses up as Nanny Ashtoreth in season 1. yes, we will note that in the book, it’s very vaguely implied that Crowley and Aziraphale both hired Ashtoreth and Francis
in season 2, when trying to get the deets on bae, Beelzebub offers Crowley a “hefty” promotion and then later tells him “you could be a duke of hell".
in researching Beelzebub, at some point I found out about Milton's Unholy Trinity in Paradise Lost, which includes Lucifer, Beelzebub, and Astaroth as the first heirarchy in Hell, and which has (seemingly) lent that idea to demonology in general.
Astaroth is often referred to as the "Great Duke of Hell."
so now with season 2, Crowley has been coded in the show as both the feminine and masculine demons derived from the eastern goddess Astarte.
note: coded != Crowley is literally Astaroth/Ashtoreth. it means we can infer things about the story through the coding
the obvious would be him becoming a duke of Hell somehow in season 3. i personally am not convinced the story will take that route, and it would be sad to see him end up back in hell. this coding is the least compelling for me. it could just be a Milton reference, or maybe, since at this point in season 2, we don’t know why Beelzebub wants Gabriel, this could be a Clue that Beelzebub was sincere. maybe it just shows how powerful Crowley could have been if he’d accepted the deal. or maybe it just adds weight to parallel the decision Aziraphale makes later when offered his own position of power. people have analyzed Crowley and Ashtoreth/Astarte before, and the book/show discrepancy is always brought up, so i'm ignoring that and just addressing the added layer of Astaroth coding. anyway, let's move on to the more interesting observations.
Sandalphon and Saraqael
i’m doing these two together because i’ve found what i believe to be a major connection between them based on Neil’s answer to this ask, a shared trait their mythical figures have, and Saraqael’s actions in the show.
when Sandalphon is introduced in season 1, we learn that he was smiting and turning people into salt during Sodom and Gomorrah. then we see the direct connection Saraqael has with Sandalphon at the end of season 2, when Michael asks her to turn Maggie and Nina into salt pillars and her hand flys up.
but that’s not secret, is it?
you know what is, though?
the fact that she immediately recognizes Metatron in his human form, looks scared shitless for multiple shots, and then proceeds to act like it never happened when he starts addressing all the angels. she doesn’t let anyone know that she recognized him.

well, let me tell you something both the mythical figures Sandalphon and Saraqael have in common.
they both saw Metatron in his human form.
according to one source, Sandalphon was Metatron’s twin brother, and Sandalphon, like Metatron, was originally human.
in the book of 2 Enoch, Sariel/Saraqael was one of the angels who brought Enoch (human!Metatron) to Heaven.
if Sandalphon had been in that room at that moment, he’d also be secretly recognizing Metatron.
obligatory: remember what I said at the beginning of this post? we are using this coding to analyze the story and how the characters interact with it and eachother. you don’t believe that Sandalphon or Metatron were literally human at one point in GO? that’s fine. i’m just giving a reason why the author may have chosen Saraqael and Sandalphon to serve the same purpose in this scene
it isn’t crazy to think that a lot of the historical lore was used to inform the characters, and if you think it is, at least read about Gabriel first.
Gabriel
Gabriel is being coded…as the actual archangel (fucking) Gabriel. (and as Lord Jim from the novel of the same name by Joseph Conrad - the book Aziraphale glances at before choosing to call Gabriel Jim. but you can google the plot of Lord Jim and how it relates to Gabriel on your own time. it’s too much to get into right now.)
Gabriel is an archangel with the power to announce God’s will to mankind. He is associated with messages, vision, telecommunications, and revelation…
…and in the Bible he announces the birth of John the Baptist, and later, Jesus.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS
Luke 1:30-31
"hey Sithis dude you will not believe this… God now grants that you may conceive seven more children…yippe!!”
let’s get back to that thing about him delivering messages and revelation though.
Gabriel starts off season 2 carrying a box to the book shop (that we think was empty but later find out had a fly in it as well as a message scrawled on the bottom about where his memory is)
he also tells Aziraphale that something terrible was going to happen to him so he had to give him something. you can take that as being the fly, and consciously it probably was, but throughout season 2 Gabriel is unconsciously and unintentionally giving other people messages.
ex.
technically, a message “delivered” (dropped) by Gabriel, found by Muriel
after Crowley not-so-nicely commands Gabriel to remember, Jimbriel says, in a voice that shifts to sound like God’s voice, “I remember when the morning stars sang together and all the angels of God shouted for joy." Crowley recognizes this as what God said to Job, and then another flashback of Job begins.
later, during another vision caused by Crowley mentioning the word tempest: "There will come a tempest then darkness and great storms and the dead will leave their graves and walk the earth once more, and there will be great lamentations... every day it's getting closer."
in the Hebrew Bible, Gabriel appears to the prophet Daniel, and explains his prophetic visions. in Good Omens though, Jim IS the prophet having prophetic visions through Gabriel.
when in the book shop with Aziraphale, Jimbriel starts to hum every day, which is what causes Aziraphale to search down the pub with the jukebox playing that song on repeat. we know from what Terry and Neil have said about every day that it’s the song of the apocalypse, but none of the characters know that, Gabriel included.
what does a song do?
each message the archangel of (fucking) messages delivers is unconscious. not how you’d expect him to live up to his name, right? of course, if they are actually God’s messages, it makes sense that they’re useless, vauge, and well, ineffable. one last thing: spiritually, Gabriel’s messages and prophecies are often believed to be delivered through dreams (or in other words, the unconscious)
edit: this post by @noneorother actually inspired me to look at the mythology of archangel Gabriel, so it’s crucial you check it out. i’ve also seen a post somewhere that posits Gabriel shouldn’t even have some of the memories that go by really quickly before the flashbacks of him and Beelzebub, but i lost the link to it.

Aziraphale
it’s hard to ignore the fact that Aziraphale’s name is similar to Raphael, and that we’re missing an archangel Raphael. i’ll link some analysis on the meaning of Aziraphale’s name and share a quote from Terry, but this has all been said before. i want to look at who Raphael is mythologically to see if there’s similarities in Aziraphale’s character, and i also want to see if we can find out the relationship between Gabriel and Aziraphale, and why the latter was a suitable replacement.
Terry said about the name's origin:
"It was made up but... er... from real ingredients. [The name] Aziraphale could be shoved in a list of 'real' angels and would fit right in..."
For instance, Islam recognizes the Archangels Jibril, Mikhail, Azrael (see also the annotation for p. 9 of Reaper Man ), and Israfel (the subject of Edgar Allan Poe's well-known poem of the same name), whereas from Christianity we get such names as Raphael, Gabriel, Michael, and Uriel.

NOW that that’s out of the way, who is archangel Raphael, the mythical figure?
Raphael’s name means “god heals.” it’s believed he helps people heal and overcome their struggles spiritually, physically, and mentally, and that he protects people on their journeys. he’s also considered to be the angel of joy, love, marriage, matchmaking, and travels.
as an example, in the Book of Tobit, God sends Raphael on a journey with a man named Tobias so that he can meet and woo his future wife. Raphael is also sent to heal her and Tobias’s blind, ageing father.
all the people and things i can count just off the top of my head that Aziraphale has healed or protected:
Anathema (healed)
Anathema’s bike (healed)
the dove he accidentally killed (technically healed by Crowley in the book)
Jimbriel (literally tells Jim he promised he would protect him)
Maggie and Nina when the demons enter the bookshop (tells them he will protect them)
bonus: in a scene cut from season 1, he stops a baby’s stroller from crashing
…and one he couldn’t:

oh, but wait, he’s known for hooking people up, right? in case you forgot: Maggie and Nina va voom? originally his idea
similarly to the book of Tobit story I mentioned earlier, who did Aziraphale protect on his journey to meeting his beloved?
remember: the characters don't know they're being coded as anything and they don't know what kind of story they're in, so while Aziraphale didn't know he was going to be reuniting two lovers when he protected Jim, he played the role Neil made for him. it doesn't matter that he didn't know in the same way that it doesn't matter that Crowley could have (potentially) been powerful, or in the same way that it doesn't matter that Gabriel's messages were delivered unconsciously.
one more thing. Raphael heals people spiritually, physically, and mentally, right?
so is it any surprise that Aziraphale thinks he can heal the *ahem* spiritual corruption in Heaven?
we're going to tinfoil hat theory-land now ya'll, but I swear all of these observations are leading up to something cohesive...
Why did Aziraphale replace Gabriel?
i'll spare you all the long theories about Metatron's reasons, although i quite like the idea that Metatron was listening in ever since Aziraphale opened the portal to discorporate the demons attacking the bookshop, and he saw Aziraphale use his halo to declare war in order to protect Maggie and Nina. this shows Metatron that when pushed into a corner, or when it means protecting someone, he can force Aziraphale's hand...even to war.
But can we find a link between Gabriel and Raphael mythically to explain it instead?
if you've made it this far, you know i've got an answer for you. i withheld one detail about Gabriel earlier. in Christianity, he is often associated with blowing the trumpet at the end times to announce Judgment Day.
"okay, so?"
well, do you remember the quote from Terry and the excerpt from lspace I mentioned earlier? when mentioning the origins of Aziraphale's name, the excerpt mentions both angels in Islam and Christianity. the counterpart to Raphael in Islam, is Israfil/Israfel...
who blows the trumpet to signal the Day of Judgment.
"but Aziraphale wouldn't do that!"
he wouldn't intentionally do it. he's not a villain.
you remember who didn't intend to start the apocalypse in season 1, but who was there and given a role to play, regardless of whether he wanted to?
…the one who said no to heaven and hell and refused to be their pawn this time around when offered powerful positions by both?
Aziraphale, after nuking some demons with his halo, with painful foreshadowing: "I think I may have just started a war."
obligatory reiteration: the way the character-coding manifests is not literal, and it isn't always in the way you'd expect. there may be no literal trumpet. but i'm just pointing out the potential symmetry with season 1 in it being Aziraphale who "starts" apocalypse II.
one last thing: Raphael protects people on journeys, and helps them overcome their struggles — but now Aziraphale is on his own journey, and he will have to overcome his own moral struggles (ironically what Crowley helped him with)…alone.

I'm reading a lot of Good Omens metas, so now I'm going to share my own theory and call it: The Book of Maggie.
S02e01:
Nina: Why sell records? Nobody ~buys records anymore.
Maggie to Nina: You see, the record shop was opened by my great grandmother in the 1920s. Originally, our shop was in the corner of Mr. Fell's bookshop. I think that's why he lets me stay on - old time's sake.
Nina: Because what, his grandfather knew your great grandmother?
Let's break it down:
1. Records: yes Maggie sells LPs, but the word "record" has another meaning: to record something, such as memories in a diary. And who has written at least 603 volumes of diaries (not entries, but volumes)? Aziraphale.
2. Originally, the "record shop" was in the corner of Aziraphale's bookshop in the 1920s. What else exists in the corner of the bookshop? Books! that's what. And I will also assume, Aziraphale’s many volumes of diaries.
3. Interesting wording "old time's sake". Records upon records kept and built upon for a hundred years, getting so massive as to make its own space next door.
4. We as the audience know full well Maggie's great grandmother did not know Aziraphale’s grandfather, because he's an immortal being who doesn't have one of those.
5. Last one is a bit of a stretch, but Maggie uses the word "our" shop instead of "her" (grandma's) shop, which I feel in the context of the statement would make more sense.
OK so in summary, this is my Book of Maggie theory:
Aziraphale keeps a section of hand-written diaries. There's at least 603 of those in the bookshop (right? Where else would he store them...) but I'm guessing by the 1920s, their numbers are hitting the 1000 mark.
We talk about Crowley’s Bentley a lot, being a vessel for Crowley’s wants and needs, or becoming a self-aware pet over time, because Crowley has subconsciously and slowly put his love and magic into it.
Now that's just a car that hasn't, in the long scheme of Crowley’s lifespan, been around all that long. Imagine this idea, but with diaries. The attention, the magic, the love, Aziraphale puts into the books he himself wrote and stored into the back of the bookshop?
What if it grew so big that it took up more space. What if it grew so big that it personified itself (like War, Polution, Famine) and made itself a container (like Gabriel's fly)?
We know that Maggie is immune to miracles. We know she can invite people into the bookshop, even when Crowley apparently can't... we know that we don't see her eat (eccles cakes) or drink (even though she is "skinny latte" and occasional herbal tea).
Tbf, if Book of Maggie is true, I don't think Aziraphale is aware of what he's done or of what she is.
