Poet and Painter
Until 24th September 2023, Tate Britain is hosting an exhibition about the radical Rossetti family, focusing on their attitudes to art, love and lifestyles. Arguably, Dante Gabriel Rosetti is the most famous of the siblings, and his paintings make The Rossettis a remarkable exhibition. It has been over twenty years since Rossetti’s artwork has been on display in retrospective fashion, and it is a…

remembering going into the tate britain after the guided tour of parliament without knowing much about what paintings they had on display. i can still vividly recall how it felt to be sore-footed and wired and to stumble across rossetti’s ecce ancilla domini just there on the wall like it was nothing. it felt like catching the eye of a long-lost lover from across a party. it made me remember how it felt to starve myself. i left the room feeling a little like i do when i leave stonehenge on solstice morning. and that was among so many other pieces of artwork i had either studied at university or been driven insane by— or more often than not, both. madox brown’s take your son, sir. wallis’ the death of chatterton. holman hunt’s the awakening conscience. waterhouse’s the lady of shalott. millais’ ophelia. watts’ hope. blake’s ancient of days. draper’s the lament for icarus. printed books by william morris. and they let a freak like me see all that for free

Thinking, as I find myself doing a lot these days, about Rossetti's Annunciation ('Ecce Ancilla Domini'). It captures something that most other annucation depictions don't - the quiet, pale look of a teenage girl being told she'll carry her own God inside her. The look isn't one of ecstatic worship at the sight of an angel, nor is it even one of suprise and shock at the event. It is a weary, dogged acceptance of her fate. I keep thinking, too, about Christina Rossetti posing for her brother for this portrait - isolated, young Christina who had a nervous breakdown at fourteen and suffered from severe bouts of depression and illness afterwards, clinging to her devout faith as a raft. The same year she sat for this, she became seriously ill, and was also involved with a man who she would never marry, for religious reasons. I wonder what Christina thought about the young Mary. I wonder if there was kinship there.
