Excerpt from a developer interview in a rare issue of Nintendo Dream from October 2017. Talks about the kind of place Agent 4 came from, and the differences in the ways of thinking between the youth of agent 3's time and agent 4's time. This is the clearest info I've seen on agent 4's background, so I figured I should share.

Q: Why is the protagonist in this game's Hero Mode called "Agent 4"?

Nogami: Because this game's protagonist and the previous game's protagonist are different Inklings.

Amano: Because they're starting from somewhere unfresh (laughs). The previous game's Agent 3 has already gotten fresh, so we thought it's time for someone else to take on the role of a hero from a different location.

Inoue: Agent 3 had a very "I've finally made it to the city" feeling, with a strong desire to become fresh. 4 on the other hand, not so much. Rather than being someone from the countryside, they're more like someone who came from a commuter town within the greater metropolitan area. It's like a place where the limited express trains wouldn't stop at, but the semi-express trains would (laughs).

Limited express train: train that makes the least number of stops, only stops at the most major stations on the line. semi-express: train that is slower and makes more stops than the limited express train. Nogami: During the tutorial at the start of the game, did you turn around and look behind the starting spawn point? There you can see ticket gates, and this is on the way towards Inkopolis Square.

Inoue: For the Inklings in the same generation as Agent 3, they were the pioneers who wanted to pave their own path, but the generation that Agent 4 is a part of has grown up watching such people, so they have more of this dry practicality to them. This is not so much the personality of the character, but rather the storm that's hit this generation. It's not that they aren't interested in idols, but they probably don't watch TV because of club activities or something.

ーーThe times have changed, haven't they?

Inoue: This time, even the girls have this tomboyish strong-minded, sporty impression, while the boys have a bit of a feminine charm. In that way there's a sense the ways of thinking have evolved. This isn't limited to the protagonist, but a change that's happened as a whole.

if you squint at Persona 5, translate it into a literary perspective, ignore a lot of the other parts of the game UNDER the mindset of said literary perspective; and focus in on how it handles the reaction of Japan and the Larger World via social media... I feel like it makes a compelling portrayal of how, for the lack of a better term, the memetic spread of the Phantom Thieves would build and build. A lot of P5's... well, everything... is steeped in our Capitalist Rot mindset (due to being made in Japan by a Capitalistic Large Company™) so it's become one of my guilty pleasures since I played it 5 years ago. (...and played it. and so on and so forth 'till I have like 3 complete save files all 100s of hours long) But, if I look past the various pitfalls that it's scenario of production inflicts on it- and zoom in on how specifically the Phantom Thieves of Hearts threatened the rich elite's grip on power and the public-at-large's divided views on them during most of the game: Well, I mean, you're kinda seeing it recently. I'm guessing that; those even more cautiously planned than that poor dude (who was already quite planned) will start smaller-but-none-the-less-flashy. What matters most: Balancing public perspective is much harder with even D-tier Rich Bastards.

Aye, there's the rub; the flighty fickleness of the Public Eye. How they root for heroes yet turn on them the second they learn a new thing- regardless of fact. How Persona 5 reacts to their CEO death is where another split in the whims of fate takes place. Which, makes more sense when there's a narrative reason as to why it happened: dramatic tension. The public needs, sadly, a story. It seems to me, though, as if a story is starting to be told now.

its wild how blorbos can make things better i was starting to panic when reading about surgery but then thought about pbd and his stupid hospital gown and shit and just chuckled and it was better. but anyway im still fucked up cause the current state of trans medicine is a big question mark here and idk if i need to be castrated or not but i would do it i just want it to be paid for if its oh so important (take advantage of it) but the horror stories are. horror. the state of hospitals is like. circling back to pbd id be like in that asylum level with how the buildings look like here like people do urbex in such buildings. i hope i find a nice clinic if it comes to that. but if i went for top surg (which isnt my focus atm, i can bind for now) i need to start saving up 🤕
