Just finished this movie. I'm not a movie-buff and this is only like, the second non-English language European movie I'm watching and honestly? It's intriguing but meh. There's a girl-pigeon here called Helga who escaped a seller's cage and meets Mališa and we're treated to the bird version of a very generic she-was-a-girl he-was-a-boy story. Idk if it even passes the Bechdel test because it's very difficult to tell the sex of all the pigeons pecking around. Towards the climax Helga becomes a pivotal character but apart from that she's basically just there to further the male pigeon's experience. Granted, it portrays a major historical event in a novel way that manages to contribute to our understanding of it but they could have easily done it without the formulaic Hollywood portrayal of gender involving BIRDS 🙄. Ehhh might be worth watching for the aerial cinematography at least.

The Ashes (1965), dir. Andrzej Wajda
Set in Europe during the Napoleonic Wars, the film revolves around the story of Poland as the country fights on Napoleon's side in the hopes of achieving Poland’s revival.
Based on the novel by Stefan Żeromski, it is one of the highest grossing Polish films of all time.
