Went down to Woods Hole, MA, on Cape Code, for brunch on Sunday. Afterwards poked around Woods Hole and Falmouth; and I wanted to see Nobska Light while we were there. While chilly and windy, we were still feeling the benefits of the warm weekend, and had to bundle up less than you'd expect for a trip to the Cape in February.
Nobska Light is very cute and scenic! It wasn't open, and while the Keeper's house seems to have been renovated and is planned to be a maritime museum, it wasn't open either. On the other side of the road was a short path to the cliff above the ocean (really, Vineyard Sound), where we looked out at Martha's Vineyard to the east, and the Elizabeth Islands chain to the west. Birds spotted: common eiders, red breasted mergansers, and a long-tailed duck drake came flying in.
Here's the text of the historical sign:
NOBSKA LIGHTHOUSE Latitude 41 30' 54" N Longitude 70 39' 20" Since 1828, Nobska Light has provided a familiar beacon for "all who go down to the sea in ships". 67 feet above sea level, Nobska's flash every six seconds is visible 17 miles out to sea. This 28,000 candlepower light used a 1000-watt lamp magnified by a Fourth Order Fresnel lens. The red section visible ton the east side of the lantern house warns ships away from Hedge Fence and L'Hommedieu Shoals south of the Cape. The present tower is 42 feelt high and was constructed in 1876. It was built to replace the original "Nobsque" light, a stone cottage with a light tower on top which had stood since 1828. The present tower is made of a cast iron shell lined with brick. It was built in Chelsea, Massachusetts and transported to Cape Cod in four sections. The front half of the current "keeper's house" was also built in 1876. Originally painted dark maroon-brown, it had a covered walkway to the tower attacked in 1899 and a second "assistant keeper's house" added in 1907. [Note: see bottom-right photo above.] Over the year, windows, doors, porches and walkways have come and gone and the color has been changed to the classic Coast Guard white with red roof. [Note: this sign is now out of date; the keeper's house is no longer white, although it still has its red roof; it is now covered in cedar shingles, which have weathered to a grey color.] Nobska Light became part of the Coast Guard in 1939, when the U.S. Light House Service merged with the Coast Guard. Despite this change, the keepers of the light remained civilians until Mr. Hindley retired in 1973, when active duty Coast Guard keepers took up the duty. In 1983, Nobska Light was automated. The two keepers houses were joined and became the quarters for Commander Coast Guard Group Woods Hole and his family. The Woods Hole Group serves the mainland and islands from Plymouth, Massachusetts to the Rhode Island/Connecticut state line.

Day Ninety-nine
It's a very grey start to today, with a light cloud cover coating the skies.
Up out of the bridleway spot and back onto the road near Constantine, it's straight into the hills as the road leads up into Cornwall's high surroundings as I continue my heading east.
It's some rolling hills to tackle as I slog along the road through some busy morning traffic, until finally riding in to the edges of Falmouth.
The busy port town is full of climbs as I track around and make my way down to the harbourside, where I get a beautiful view across Carrick Roads whilst waiting for the ferry.
After a brief stint afloat and savouring the waves, I put in across the water at the beautiful town of St Mawes.
Heading up past the castle, with some lovely views back across the water, it's up the steep hills once more to start slogging along the road again.
The rising sun is doing its best to burn off the light cloud cover of the morning, and the heat is rising once more as I get to rejoin NCN Route 3 for its stint along the coastline here.
Dropping down past Carne Beach, the route begins a heavy section of steep climbs and drops as it tours around the beautiful coastal area, zig zagging round to take in the many bays and watersides as it makes its way around the cliffsides.
Around and past the steep drops through Portmellon and Mevagissey, the route finally heads off the roads for a long hard climb over the lovely gardens of Heligan, before crossing the road and heading on to St Austell River.
It's a wonderful stretch of off-traffic riding herr as Route 3 follows up the river's course, through some beautiful forested areas, until heading in to St Austell at the heaving A390.
With Route 3 continuing northwards, I head off the cycle route and in to town for a resupply stop and break, before carrying on around the very busy roads to head on towards Par.
Whilst riding along the trails here, the bike lurches to a very sudden stop. A glance down has my heart in my mouth as a rather large branch has managed to find its way into the spokes of my rear wheel, catching the struts of my mudguard, and wrenching everything round. The mudguard has folded near double on itself and is sticking out towards my knee, and the branch is firmly wedged in amongst the wheel.
I stop to assess the damage as this could be pretty disastrous. After managing to extricate the offending piece of wood, I get the mudguard to unfold and slot back into its place without much harm done, and a check of the wheel finds that it's not even much out of true.
What on earth is with this bike?! An absolute tank! I can barely believe that no serious damage has been caused from this incident, but everything seems to be rolling ok, so I guess that means on with the show!
Round to Par and through it's looping one-way system, it's up another big sharp hill to head over to Fowey, with a steep descent through some narrow paths leading to some steps down to my second ferry of the day.
After a short wait and chat with some other tourists waiting, it's aboard the small ferry for a short cruise over the River Fowey to land at the working harbour at Polruan.
With the day wearing on, the heat and work haven't ceased yet, as from the waterside the road leads up and up a long and steep hill to get through and out of the pretty seaside village.
Finally up onto the coastal moorlands, I think it's been another long and tough day's work, so it's time for me to get scouting for a spot to lay my head. Tomorrow should hopefully have me pushing on and out of Cornwall's challenging hills.
TTFN!

Funeral of Queen Caroline
The private funeral of Caroline, The Queen Mother was held today inside Carnarvon Chapel the Chapel Royal located on the westside of Fogmorre Castle. While press and news cameras were not permitted inside the Castle during the service, the Royal Family did release official photographs to mark the occasion.
Her Majesty Queen Anne II and her husband His Royal Highness The Earl of Gloucester were seated front row along with their sons Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince William and The Prince George of Wessex. His Royal Highness The Duke of Uxbridge joined the senior royals in the front row during the remembrance service.
In the second row of the royal section were Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra of Uxbridge and His Highness The Earl of Falmouth.
There was much surprise, when it was confirmed that the children of Her Highness Princess Alexandra were seated with members of the Royal Family in the second row next to their parents and uncle. USS Mason (DE-529) was an Evarts-class destroyer escort. USS Mason was one of two US Navy ships with largely African American crews in WWII. These two ships were manned with African Americans as the result of a letter sent to President Roosevelt by the NAACP in mid-December 1941. Entering service in 1944, the vessel was used for convoy duty in the Battle of the Atlantic for the remainder of the war. Following the war, Mason was sold for scrap and broken up in 1947.
Her keel was laid down in the Boston Navy Yard, on October 14, 1943. She was launched on November 17, 1943, sponsored by Mrs. David Mason, the mother of Ensign Mason, and commissioned on March 20, 1944, with Lt. Commander William M. Blackford, USNR, in command.
Following a shakedown cruise off Bermuda, Mason departed from Charleston on June 14, 1944, escorting a convoy bound for Europe, arriving at Horta Harbor, Azores, on July 6, 1944. She got underway from Belfast, Northern Ireland, headed for the East Coast on July 26, 1944. arriving at Boston Harbor on August 2, 1844, for convoy duty off the harbor through August.
On September 2, 1944, she arrived in NYC to steam on September 19, 1944, in the screen for convoy NY.119. Mason reached Falmouth, Cornwall, with part of the convoy on October 18, 1944, and she returned to NY from Plymouth, England, and the Azores on November 22, 1944.
On October 18, 1944, Mason supported Convoy NY-119 in a severe North Atlantic storm. The ship suffered and self-repaired critical structural damage and still rescued ships from the convoy. The crew of Mason was not awarded a letter of commendation until 1994 for meritorious service during this action. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Co-written by Jarvis Cocker (of Pulp), Walk Like a Panther is a song on how things have changed but not for the better and things losing their value Watch https://youtu.be/ZyR4ut8Vjdo?si=eL99sMl7a-_pkCkL Cal White - Tell Me What You Want I came across this incredible artist recently, and by that I mean very, as in the same day I wrote this. He's been active on the local scenes since 2017 and has been gaining a following ever since. Tell Me What You Want is a great song about trying to know what that someone in your life wants and holding on to it. If this song alone is anything to go by I'm keeping my eyes and ears on this guy. Great potential ahead Watch https://youtu.be/SvpCcX5FoK0?si=F5Bs4B244aQlqkn8 For more music updates visit WhatsOn Geordie Greep (of black midi) shares new single 'Blues’ from forthcoming album 'The New Sound' London show 12th Oct: Zkeletonz bring their hyperfunk party to Oslo, Hackney!
