“Going to Korea and leaving both my hometown Changsha and my mother was scary. There were hours and hours of training in a completely foreign environment. Sometimes, after training, I would go downstairs to the practice room and learn how to produce music. It was unusual for a trainee to be that interested in producing music and I was not very good at it. Becoming a dancer for SHINee was a huge milestone for me. It showed me that I was on the right path. Then, when I made it into EXO, I was overjoyed. In the early days, we traveled a lot between China, Japan, and South Korea. There were a lot of happy memories going into the studio and practicing new songs with my members, but nothing could compare to performing with them live. I felt, and still feel, so proud to be an EXO member and to see everything that we accomplished together. When I started doing more solo activities, I found it challenging. All of a sudden I had to do things alone and without my members by my side. It was hard, but it made me grow and helped me to become the person I am today.”

your essay on baekhyun was an incredible read, thank you. i was wondering if you wanted to expand on the manipulator bit? is it in regards to his love for keeping the parasocialism with his fans to the Max or is it also in another way? he's such a slime puppy and i love hearing you talk about him!

it's related to his parasocial relationship with fans but also it's so much more than that. baekhyun's ability to grow such a rabid fanbase is just a consequence of his overall character and like. probably a lot to do with the way he was brought up/developed as a kid. i think baekhyun is eerily good at manipulating a situation in order to get what he wants and has been the case for most of his life - youngest children of a family tend to be that way. they will use an armory of psychological games to make sure their spot is secure.

i also think he's naturally good at reading people and uses that to his advantage - he's good at reading fans and giving them what they want. these are core traits of his "real" personality that he then uses to put on a "fansona" that is specifically designed to maximize appeal and in return be able to do whatever he wants. that's where the "manipulation" in his public personality comes from.

a lot of kpop idols (a large majority i would say) are tragically bad at being celebrities - but baekhyun is a natural born idol. he understands what the business is about and he has no qualms in exploiting the game to his advantage. being insanely talented is just a bonus because his public personality is pretty fertile ground for parasocial dependence.

i think he's an attention whore, has always liked the spotlight - and like i said being actually good at singing and dancing and entertaining makes that so much easier and like, intense for the recipients. so add to that his ambitious nature, and i think baekhyun realized early in his career he could become big by giving the people what they want. and kpop fans only want one thing: to own you.

baekhyun is well aware of this, and while he's achieved a status that few idols in kpop ever reach and he could afford to take off the shackles and tell them to fuck off, like i said in the previous ask, he is also very needy and praise oriented (another youngest child trait). so in order to keep fans happy and himself in a comfortable position he splits the difference by using this "fansona" that is basically him saying "i'm here to fulfill your fantasies" - whether that means being the innocent aegyo uwu baby girl, or the beta bitch boy in a pairing with his band mate, or the flirty and slutty bad boy. he'll be whatever you want for the night as long as you pay up. and it's okay because that's not "really" him, it's part of the game.

there lies baekhyun's polarizing nature: the thing that makes him so attractive/infuriating is that he knows he's hot shit, he knows the effect he has on fans, and he shows it. and he doesn't apologize or pretend he doesn't know. we are in on the joke with him - or rather, he lets us think we are. he will put in the work to give the fans exactly what they want, and then he'll go home and wash the stench off and go to bed happily. a clean transaction - no fuss no muss, we both got what we wanted.

i think that speaks volumes of a mental fortitude he has - or at least, a pretty effective coping mechanism that most idols lack. they can't compartmentalize both senses of self - they forget to separate business from pleasure. i think baekhyun being transparent about this without explicitly acknowledging it is the key to the carefully crafted image he's led fans to believe. and it has worked incredibly well - for the most part. until recent events, he really had not shown cracks in the armor but i think this whole SM legal battle has taken a toll on him, as it would with anyone.
