I've been reading a histrographical book about early 1400s Iran recently, and within it, I've already stumbled upon three insane historical stories of just random people.
1. Amir Chaqmaq Shami, major administrative official under and advisor to Shah Rukh Timurid. The book says that we have many contradicting stories on his origins.
Then goes on to say that the most plausible one is that he's from Egypt (which was under the Mamluk Sultanate at the time) and fled all the way to Central Asia before just. Linking up with Shah Rukh during the First Timurid Succession Crisis and ending up in his service.
2. After Timur died, his main treasurer was accussed of embezzlement after it was found that there was 2,000 tumens (the currency) missing. This encouraged his son to study accounting, and after some time, his son demonstrated in front of Shah Rukh how the original evidence that had gotten his father convicted had made a major mathematical error and the actual missing count was 200 tumens. Shah Rukh was so impressed that he pardoned the father and employed both in the Imperial Diwan.
3. A Sayyid (Zayn al-'Abadin) was imprisoned by Timur during his conquests of Iran. However, after Zayn showed Timur a Qu'ran he had presumably copied whilst in prison, Timur was so impressed that he pardoned the man, employed him, and the man's son would also work in administration.
(The book is 'Power, Politics, and Religion in Timurid Iran' by Beatrice Forbes Manz, btw)

Okay, but I'm still so hyped for Chapter IV of CK3, 'cause of the Mega-Campaign implications.
Previously, you had to wait until EUIV for: The new World (the Americas, Australia, etc) Southern Africa and East Asia.
Now? Asia is free from that. Or at least, China, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia are.
And the reason that excites me so much is the chaos factor. The borders are gonna be so fucked up, now. I'm gonna go into EUIV and there's gonna be an HRE presence in Beijing somehow, and the Shogunate is gonna have a foothold in the Balkans somehow. Korean Conqueror characters are gonna blob over every new added landmass in the game and then eat Mongolia. Temujin's gonna blob over Indonesia for fun. Utter anarchy.
And I am so excited for it.

Few games seem so hostile to my human brain as Europa Universalis 4. I picked it up for 4 dollars (w/o DLC) on GOG because the idea of a historical sim sounded cool, and I'm trying to rectify some of my historical illiteracy, but god damn if that UI isn't just information overload. I get that everything is there for a reason (you probably need all of it to successfully run an empire), and I don't want to give up on it just yet, but even the beginner tutorial videos I've watched are like 30 minutes long and barely cover 1/100th of everything on screen. I just wanna ask those who play; how were you successfully onboarded without immediately bouncing off?

Something about Paradox fans, especially in the Europa Universalis 4 community, being utterly obsessed with Rome and Byzantium. Europa Universalis is supposed to be a game about the rennaisance, the era of European imperialism, the rise of the Ottoman empire, the colonization of America, and the start of global geopolitics and trade, lots of things happening all over the globe, but you go to the forums and it's all BYZANTIUM ROME LEGIONS THEME SYSTEM BYZANTIUM BYZANTINES ROME
Which makes it even more curious is that the fall of Byzantium was usually set in historiography as the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the Early Modern era. So instead of playing and learning about a period of tectonic social changes such as the Rennaisance and the age of imperialism, they just want to keep playing their Middle Ages fantasy which is actually an Ancient Rome fantasy, I don't know.
Anyways, Byzantium was if like the Romans sucked.

wow i did not expect an austria game in eu4 to actually go well for me, however, somehow i managed to unite the HRE into one country, conquered spain and thanks to that took over their colonial nations, portugal fell under a PU with me at some point, the spanish declared a succession war when that happened, it was an easy win though, just took time.
I started out the game basically by just speedrunning getting a bohemian and austrian PU, then went for poland, while also doing diplomatic fuckery to spread the habsburgs. This led to a Swedish, Saxonian, Portugese and British PU eventually, saxony and the brits were a claim on throne war. did some conquering in poland to finish the mission that gets you a restoration of union CB on poland, it wasn't that helpful unfortunately, russia also took a lot of their lands. then after taking i think it was venice and Milan, i got the restoration of union CB on naples and did that as well :3
so there i was with 7 personal unions at once + some subjects from the HRE, the religious league war was pretty fast, catholicism won, i revoked some free cities to enforce the religion, and i was left with a HRE free from heresy, this in addition to the historical center of Prague and austrian national ideas made getting imperial authority easy, and soon enough i disallowed internal wars, making centralization of the empire even easier, yippee ;3
once i revoked the privilegia i declared a couple wars, the vassal swarm was amazing, first i took some provinces from the ottomans to finish an austrian mission that wanted me to get some serbian provinces, then spain, thanks to the way they choose how to declare wars (iirc they don't consider subjects of an overlord when declaring war on a subject of of said overlord, which gave them the amazing idea to start a colonialism war against Holland, which was my vassal, this called the entire HRE and my PUs into the war) It was fucking horrible. fighting countries that have colonial subjects is SO fucking exhausting, I've had your entire mainland occupied for >15 years and we're still only at ~40% war score because their fucking colonial subjects are untouched. horrible.
Anyways, I now own all of the HRE, most of france, all of the nordic countries, the british isles, iberia, hungary, bohemia, poland, half of Lithuania, all of Italy, morocco, 90% of the americas, australia and half of south africa.
monthly balance is at 4.5k, my manpower pool was into 3 or 4 million, I don't remember exactly, army limit was at 3 million, and navy limit at around 3k iirc, as of rn i only have 1k ships, and around 2.5m bitches in the army, and i have 155 absolutism
