Companies look to ramp up gig workforce in Q3 FY23
New Delhi: Gig workers hiring is expected to continue in retail, logistics and e-commerce businesses even after the festivities in October. Several companies have seen an increase in sales and to meet growing consumer demand, they have also ramped up their workforce. A few major staffing companies and industry players share their thoughts with ETRetail about the hiring increase and trend during the festive season.
According to staffing company Teamlease Services, the demand for gig workforce is not just restricted to tier I locations, but also tier II and tier III cities where the demand has surged by 40 per cent. Apart from the high mandate for delivery agents; Quick-commerce, QSRs, retail stores, and FMCG, FOS (Foots-on-the-Street) salesmen are the most in demand roles.
"Hiring in the logistics domain has also increased as ecommerce companies are trying to crunch their delivery timelines. In fact, there is a 30 per cent surge and the fast growing third party logistics (3PL) segment is expected to add 8 lakh jobs by December 2022," said Ajoy Thomas, VP and business head (Retail, E-Commerce, Logistics & Transportation), , TeamLease Services.
Ecommerce companies are taking cohesive steps to tackle the costs for managing their delivery fleet.
India is a low-margin market, where there are currently about 3-4 lakh people working as delivery executives. On this Thomas said, "For start-ups, 50 per cent of the expenses come from managing the biker fleet. Even a delta of Rs 1 in costs of delivery executives can create a massive impact on the budget of the start-ups. Companies are batching orders and offering exciting incentives to the delivery executives."
Explaining the uptick in hiring of gig and temporary workers in seasonal positions, Manu Saigal, Director - General Staffing, Adecco India said, it is primarily to serve the festival demand owing to improved consumer buyer sentiment and post-pandemic recovery led by retail, logistics, e-commerce, and FMCG sectors.
She added, "Our temporary hiring in Q2 FY23 was up 30.5 per cent higher compared to the same period last year for general staffing with clients focusing on balancing speed with hiring quality candidates."
There is an intense competition across sectors to onboard maximum delivery partners and keep the fleet order-ready and response time low.
To cater to evolving customer preferences of faster delivery of products, a global delivery service company Borzo, previously known as WeFast, also onboarded 4000 delivery riders in its fleet in the last two months to boost the company’s delivery capabilities. It saw a sharp increase of 11 per cent in its delivery workforce, and now it has over 35,000 delivery partners across its B2B and B2C verticals. It currently focuses on delivering last-mile delivery solutions for SMEs, ecommerce brands and D2C brands through same-day delivery.
On this, Eugene Panfilov, General Manager, Borzo, India shared, "This first post-pandemic year looks very promising as consumer sentiments are high. The demand expectation from Diwali to Christmas is robust. We expect the orders to continue to grow at 2x speed compared to the previous festive seasons."
On hiring increase this fiscal, an Omni channel platform Fynd said, it partners with several logistics companies that comprehensively cover their customer base but it. is currently not hiring any Fleet on Street (FoS). However, retail looks promising this quarter, said Harsh Shah, co-founder of the  company.
The company said it will be hiring sales associates in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Jammu & Kashmir regions to boost their presence across India .
