There are a number of languages you can search for works in on AO3, including Eald Eanglisc of all things, but the one language on there that really throws me for a loop is...American Sign Language.

Like, is there even a video option on AO3 for this to be possible?

I once picked a really big fanfic collection to search for ASL fics in and the only one that categorized as ASL was *written* in English. No videofile too be seen.

The most you can do in ASL in writing is write English words with ASL syntax. But that's still not ASL. ASL does not have a written alphabet or syllabary.

Genuinely bewildered about how this came about. Can people just post something and write in an "other" language and AO3 just adds that language to the list of languages they have fics written in?

I can't think of any other way that this might've happened, and as much as I adore AO3, this is pretty problematic.

Use hyphens with “x-year-old” as a noun (“A bus full of seven-year-olds just arrived”) 🚌 or as an adjective (“He is a seven-year-old detective”). 🕵

📌 Use “x years old” (without hyphens) after a form of “be,” e.g., is, was, am (“He is seven years old”).

Would the guys try to learn a bit of mc's language when dating if English wasn't their first language? I'm just curious at what point would each try to get, as for Jamie it's not something that far-fetched

I think Jamie would go all the way, just because it would be easy for him. Plus the amount of shenanigans he can get up to talking about things that only MC would understand would be incredibly appealing to him. Talking about other people, messing with MC, talking to MC’s parent(s) in their native tongue.

Yeah he’d learn the whole thing if he really likes them. But he wouldn’t flaunt that he learned it just for them, it would be more like MC learns one random day that Jamie can fluently speak it and they’re just like:

MC: “Since when did you learn how to speak my language???”

Jamie: “Since the first week I knew you were the one for me. Come on, MC, keep up.”

And he’s just smug about catching them off guard haha

Elio and Percy I think would be entirely dependent on if MC wants them to learn it, their parent(s) only speak that language, or if they’re made aware that MC’s culture and native tongue is very important to them. Like if any of those case are true then 100% they’ll learn it!

Otherwise, they probably wouldn’t. Like maybe Percy would learn a pickup line or two or Elio might try calling MC an affectionate name in their first language, but I really don’t see them learning beyond that. ^^,

the thing is it's not really uni friends. those just either don't reply or reply that they're busy when it's about something esle than school, they're clear with us that they have their own friend groups they value more and outside of the university setting we don't really keep in touch too much. i mean i tried befriending one girl but it eventually backfired at me so i decided it's not worth to spend my time and health on that

the thing that's happening lately is with people i have known before for ~5 years out of which one of them is my rommate. and only around january/february this year it started becoming clear what we stand on. that's probably why the whole thing is so frustrating to me now, especially that situationship with my roommate/best friend that we ended up in. it's such a complicated and multilayered situation at this point that it's just simply more tiring than upsetting

It would be so weird because I had no name or face to go by, but the post I was desperately searching my actual irl Tumblr for was a post where I was quoting some big, insightful things he has said being like "wow this guy is so intelligent and thoughtful he is really amazing" so that's all I have to identify him with.

Idk why im reading slang discourse on esl subreddits but as a native English speaker, it is perfectly acceptable to use informal English in "official" communication (work, education) if whoever is higher up does it. In English culture specifically, *not* mirroring informality can be seen as quite arrogant and standoff-ish, which is worse than appearing a bit unproffesional. This is more true the more north/rural you go.

This might not apply in London, because Londoners arent people. Or in America, because america is weird.

my relationship with shipping in bbc merlin is. complex. i ship nothing and i ship everything. i don’t particularly want or need any of the characters to kiss/cuddle/have sex/be in a Relationship (TM). that’s not to say i’m opposed to reading fics like that. I have liked temporarily staying in big cities, but would rather not live there. Though the convenience and the food choices do make aspects of it appealing. I also wouldn't want to live in straight up countryside (though given the choice, it would be countryside over cityscapes). We are semi-rural/semi-suburban (a suburb with farmland and bushland all around, but not anything I could walk to), which gives us good aspects of both!

Not for lack of trying, but I'm monolingual. I got fairly far on German for a while, and I know a little bit of spoken Dutch because my Oma and Opa were Dutch and spoke it to my father. But we were never encouraged to speak it, and were never taught, which makes me really sad.

Unfortunately, if the language isn't around me, I don't have any kind of retention. I do pick up languages fast when I'm around them.

I also just randomly know about 200~ spoken words in Japanese after years of just...osmosis, I guess? But nothing about grammar or the written language so no, I don't know foreign languages.
