Reflection on waste in pandemic season

Imagine any day that is increasingly common within the " new reality" of the current pandemic era. 

The calendar and your last digit of the ID indicates that today is the day to go out to take the dog out and go to the market. 

Part of the mandatory accessory is the mask and, in some cases, gloves.

You take a mask from your cabinet , you walk the dog, you go up to your apartment, you discard the mask.

You take another mask , your car keys, the market bags and go down the stairs to face the purchase.

At this rate, per week you are wearing 6 masks.

Imagine a 20 - story building and 4 apartments per floor, in which inhabit a minimum of 2 people per apartment.

How many masks would be discarded per week ? In our hypothetical example there would be around 960 masks weekly, just in that building.

How about all the buildings and houses in each neighborhood?

Capturing the probable volume of masks used in these dimensions really frightens and once the confinement is over it could double, since the mask will be part of our “new reality” for a long time.

Let's reflect on the global impact of this type of waste , since it is not a pandemic event that involves a couple of continents but the entire world: 

• For example, in Spain with a population of more than 47 million inhabitants, the use of face masks in public spaces has been mandatory since May 2020. 

• China sold, only in March 2020 about 3,860 million masks to countries affected by the pandemic.

• In the United Kingdom , a specialized assembly plant created a new line to supply the government with 4.5 million disposable masks per month, for a period of 18 months, from May 2020.

• In Brazil with a population that exceeds 217 million inhabitants , the demand for masks ranks third among the hygiene products consumed in the face of the coronavirus (See graph).

Isn't it worrying the volume of waste that disposable masks add to the total waste that is usually produced ?

Faced with an uncertain future of the vaccination date, the actions aimed at giving priority attention to the health of the Panamanian population, promote the daily use of masks.

However, there are few clear messages on how to proceed with the waste generated. 

As a result, Panamanians unknowingly contribute to accumulated pollution on beaches and waterways.

Other concerns also arise :

    1. Are reusable face masks hazardous waste?

    2. What is the proper management of this type of waste ?

    3. Given the large number of asymptomatic patients, is it correct to discard the masks with the rest of the waste generated in my home ?

I asked myself these questions and some colleagues agree with the same concerns, leading us to the following reflections:

    1. The used masks, when in contact with the respiratory process, become a culture of pathogens.

It is necessary to carry out the correct separation and identification of said residues and establish guidelines for the population to temporarily dispose of these residues, avoiding foci of infection caused especially by asymptomatic patients. 

    • In the absence of policies or guidelines to separate waste from gloves and disposable masks (whether infected with COVID-19 or not), it is mandatory to carry out an awareness campaign aimed at the population to provoke the correct temporary management, separation and identification of this type of hazardous waste ( masks, gloves, reusable mask filters ). 

    • This practice could be used to install household separation and correct waste disposal habits, preparing the population for a complete recycling system from separation and temporary management to their final destination.

    • It could be an alternative that the Ministry of Health encourages the population to deposit their waste at collection points, established with special containers, for subsequent incineration by the authority.

    • The decentralization of the municipalities plays a fundamental role as executors of the initiative.

    • It is time to promote the use of biodegradable materials applied to the manufacture of disposable masks.

    • When health security is assured, it is necessary to direct our society to give due importance to the development of the circular economy.

Finally, the unexpected beauty within this pandemic event is that the agitation of our habitual way of life has stopped to be able to reflect, feed our critical thinking and be able to act to provide solutions to the home inhabited by humanity.

Dugang niini nga kanunay gamonitor si Gob. Bambi Emano sa kahimtang sa 8 ka provincial hospital ug kanunay gaabag sa ilang panginahanglanon.
