Between 2009 and 2016, the company bribed public officials with 80 billion pesos ($19.4 million) to win a contract to build a 528-kilometer (328-mile) road between the center of the country and the Caribbean coast, prosecutors said in a statement.
Prosecutors said 55 people, including a group of 22 former company managers and lobbyists as well as 33 former government officials, had been charged in connection to the scandal.
The company’s former president, Marcelo Odebrecht, was among those charged.

Peru has a prison which is for ex-presidents. An astonishing number of recent Peruvian presidents have been in trouble with the law because of corruption or human rights abuses.
Maybe they could go international and build an addition in this cárcel to accommodate Donald Trump. Let's all drink more Peruvian coffee!
The Barbadillo prison is located on the grounds of a police academy in a working-class neighborhood on the outskirts of Lima. Due to violence and overcrowding at Peru's standard prisons, part of the police compound has been converted into a kind of VIP jail with three custom-built cells that are more like small apartment units. Barbadillo's first inmate, former President Alberto Fujimori, arrived in 2007. He is serving a 25-year sentence for human rights abuses. Former President Pedro Castillo arrived last December after he was arrested for trying to dissolve congress and rule by decree. Alejandro Toledo, who faces charges of money laundering from his time as president in the early 2000s, arrived at the prison in April.
Trump's hypothetical cell could be decorated with faux classified documents wallpaper. Across the hallway within sight of his cell would be an electoral vote map from 2020.
From France to Brazil to South Korea, many countries have prosecuted and jailed former presidents, while in the United States, former President Donald Trump could be sent to prison if convicted of mishandling classified documents after he left the White House. But Peru may hold the record for the most ex-leaders behind bars at one time, according to Rosa María Palacios, a Lima lawyer and political commentator.
This would be a great niche business for Peru. They could start work on a Putin cell. Every day he would wake up to a recording of Ukraine's national anthem sung by a NATO choir.
In Peru's case, kickbacks seem to pave the road to Barbadillo for many of their ex-presidents.
Nearly every Peruvian president over the past three decades has been accused of corruption. In most of these cases, they became entangled in a wide-ranging scandal involving Odebrecht, a Brazilian construction firm that admitted to paying $800 million in kickbacks to politicians across Latin American in exchange for public works contracts. In fact, the only reason there was room at Barbadillo when former President Toledo arrived in April is because another former president, Ollanta Humala — who had spent 18 months of pre-trial detention there — had been released, freeing up one of the three cells. Both former presidents face charges related to the Odebrecht scandal.
Odebrecht is a Brazilian company. That reminds me that Jair Bolsonaro ought to be eligible for a cell at a multinational version of Barbadillo.
So props to Peru for coming up with this concept. When people at the top are not held accountable for major crimes then that only encourages lawlessness throughout the population.

Lava Jato scandal: Marcelo Odebrecht serves out his prison sentence
Tumblr media
Businessman Marcelo Odebrecht has been fully released from jail in Brazil Friday after serving his sentence for corruption, illicit association, and money laundering that went public in the Operation Lava Jato scandal. He had been doing community work at a hospital in exchange for a sentence reduction.
Odebrecht, who was initially sentenced to 19 years and 4 months in prison by then-Judge Sergio Moro in 2016, spent the last two years working in the administrative sector of the Hospital de Clínicas in the city of São Paulo. As he made a plea bargain, Moro reduced his sentence to ten years. And last year, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) reduced the term to seven years, now served.
The Lava Jato investigation uncovered a network of overpricing and bribes paid by construction companies in exchange for contracts to several Petrobras officials and employees, money that was also used to finance political party campaigns.
In addition to Odebrecht, other 57 executives of the firm adhered to the plea bargain to reduce sentences. Many of them, such as Alexandrino Alencar, denounced that they were pressured by the prosecution to involve President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in their testimony.

Peru’s former president Alejandro Toledo has been sentenced to 20 years and six months in prison after he was linked to a corruption scandal involving Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht. Odebrecht became synonymous with corruption across Latin America after the firm paid millions of dollars in bribes to government officials and others. Authorities accused Toledo of accepting 35 million dollars (£26.9 million) in bribes from Odebrecht in exchange for allowing the construction of a highway in the South American country. The National Superior Court of Specialised Criminal Justice in Lima, Peru’s capital, imposed the sentence after years of legal wrangling. Such wrangling included a dispute over whether Toledo, who governed Peru from 2001 to 2006, could be extradited from the United States.

Ecuador has moved to sue Mexico amid an ongoing diplomatic spat over Ecuador’s former Vice President Jorge Glas. The conflict centres on Mexico’s decision in early April to grant asylum to Glas, who had twice been convicted of corruption by Ecuadoran courts. In December 2017, Glas was sentenced to six years in prison after he was convicted on charges of accepting bribes from the Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht in exchange for government contracts. Glas had been staying at Mexico’s diplomatic compound in Quito since December. Then Ecuadoran authorities stormed Mexican’s embassy in Quito, arrested him, and imprisoned him in Guayaquil.
