West Indies would be looking to avoid the follow-on when they resume their first innings against England. On Day 2, Stuart Broad filled in as England’s all-action all-rounder to move the team within sight of a Test series victory. Broad smashed a counter-attacking 62 in a return to form with the bat, then played a lead role as part of England’s destructive pace quartet to leave the West Indies on the ropes. In reply to England’s first innings of 369, the West Indies were 137/6 when bad light forced stumps on a day the forecast rain never came in Manchester. They trail by 232 runs, with the follow-on still very much in play. Resuming on 258/4, England collapsed to 280/8 after losing wickets in four consecutive overs, only for Broad to do his best impression of Stokes with a belligerent 45-ball 62 before lunch. It was Broad’s highest Test score since 2013 and smashed nine fours and a six in a potentially game-defining ninth-wicket partnership with Dom Bess worth 76 runs. His 33-ball half-century tied him for third place on the all-time list of England’s fastest Test fifties. The West Indies’ bid to capture a Test series in England for the first time since 1988 looking in ruins.

Burns and Dom Sibley managed to see off 13 overs of the Windies’ pace attack but Burns lost his wicket in the last over before lunch as spinner Roston Chase struck with his second delivery to trap the opener lbw for 15.

TOSS | West Indies win toss and opt to bowl Joe Root:“We have to look ahead to the next five days and put up a good performance. We spoke to Mark and Jimmy and knew it’s a high risk to play them in back to back games. It is a must win for us, but we need to look after them as well. We can take 20 wickets and we’re looking forward to that. We have Broad, Woakes, Curran and Bess in the bowling. Firstly we need runs and need to improve there. We need to figure out how we want to play our cricket. We got ourselves where we could win the game after being down in the first two and a half days and that gave me a lot of pleasure. It looks a very good wicket, might spin a little bit and is softer than usual. I have had a lot of time thinking about Test cricket and want to get out there and perform.” Jason Holder:“We’re going to field first. Try to make use of the overhead conditions. We’ve got the same team as well. Whatever it is under the surface, we’ll try to extract it in the first session. The bowlers have pulled up quite well, expect similar things in this game from them. We’ve got to start fresh; different venue, different match. We have to learn from our mistakes in the last game and rectify it here. The last game brought a lot of smiles to the faces of our people back home and we’ll look to keep it that way.” PLAYING XIs: England XI: Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Zak Crawley, Joe Root (c), Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler (w), Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Dominic Bess, Stuart Broad West Indies XI: Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Shai Hope, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Jermaine Blackwood, Shane Dowrich (w), Jason Holder (c), Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel Revised playing conditions (83 overs in the day): Toss: 16:30 IST Start: 17:00 IST Lunch: 18:00 IST Tea: 20:55 IST Stumps: 11:30 IST (+ extra 30 minutes if necessary) England’s Stuart Broad, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes warming up before the toss:

Hello and welcome once again as we at Timesofindia.com continue with our live updates from West Indies’ tour of England, which moves to Manchester today for the start of the second Test. England are chasing the three-match series having lost the first Test, and they suffered a body blow of sorts on the Thursday morning when fast bowler Jofra Archer was dropped for breaking the bio-secure protocol. He will now have to undergo a five-day isolation, during which he will be tested for COVID-19. However, the welcome news for the hosts is that their regular skipper Joe Root has returned to lead the side. That and much more in our Match Preview.

3rd Test Live: England eye big 1st innings total
* Hello and welcome to TimesofIndia.com’s live coverage of the second day of the third and final Test between hosts England and West Indies in Manchester. * There was a drizzle in Manchester early morning . But no worries, the sun is out, covers are off and we are all set to have a scheduled start.
The sun is out in Manchester! Day 1 Highlights: https://t.co/Hap9fUQxe3 #ENGvWI https://t.co/98GICc6qjK
— England Cricket (@englandcricket) 1595668091000
After a tough Day 1 of the series decider, England comfortably sit at 258 for 4 with Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler well set at 91* and 56* respectively. While Pope’s superb unbeaten knock helped England recover from a troubled 122-4 situation, it was under-pressure Buttler, who batted beautifully in the final session to take England to a solid total at stumps. With Pope now just 9 runs shy of his second Test ton, Buttler too will be eyeing to get a ton and take England towards a big total. West Indies, on the other hand, were in-charge of the first two sessions but lost their grip in the final. The visitors are now in desperate need to end the dangerous unbeaten 136-run partnership between Pope and Buttler that might take away the game from them. The series is currently level at 1-1.

Wood was the first to be dismissed, edging paceman Shannon Gabriel to wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich as England were reduced to 303-9. Hello and welcome to TimesofIndia.com’s live coverage of Day 5 of the first Test between England and West Indies being played at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. We are headed into an exciting final day of the contest with the match beautifully poised between the two teams. After Zak Crawley (76) and Dom Sibley’s (50) notable resistance on the penultimate day, it was a late burst from the Windies seamers that has put the visitors a bit ahead in the competition. With Shannon Gabriel (3/62) leading the attack in the second innings, others too struck in unison for the West Indies as they pegged back England in the final session to put the hosts at 284/8 at stumps with a lead of 170 runs. Windies will now eye to wrap up the England tailenders quickly and set themselves a chasable target on the final day of the match.
