OBSCURED BY CLOUDS, 1972
Wedged between Meddle and The Dark Side Of The Moon, Pink Floyd released Obscured By Clouds. The band's second outing as composers for a Barbet Schroeder film (the first being More), the material consisted of music for the soundtrack to the movie La Vallée.
Either side of a Japanese tour, the songs had been hastily written and recorded during two one-week periods in February and March in the Strawberry Studio at the Château d'Herouville, near Paris. Musically ahead of its time, it contained excellent harmonies between David and Richard Wright both vocally and instrumentally. Along with the bullet Strat, David Gilmour used The Black Strat for the recording.
Exploring what could be achieved utilising the additional second socket, an XLR wired as a send and return that David had recently fit to the guitar, he used it with his usual set up of equipment consisting of Hiwatt amps with Wem 4 × 12 cabinets plus effects: a Binson echo, Fuzz Face distortion, Dearmond 610 volume/tone pedal, Vox Wah-Wah, Univibe and Colorsound Power Boost. The recently acquired newly developed EMS VCS3 and AKS Synthi synthesisers offered an additional range of sounds.
Despite the hectic recording schedule the album gained critical praise and contains some powerfully sublime moments, exhibiting elements of what was to come with The Dark Side Of The Moon
Disc & Music Echo called it "an amazing album” …

Ordnance Survey - Turas - music in the orbit of the Ghost Box/Clay Pipe binary sun, incorporating field recordings from ancient burial sites in Ireland
Turas (Journey) is the most ambitious Ordnance Survey record to date. The field recordings used on Turas were captured with both analog and digital devices at passage and wedge tombs across Meath, West Cork, Wicklow, Connemara and Roscommon. To make use of the tombs' acoustics, elements like percussion were recorded in the tombs and through the process of re-amplification (playing pre-recorded material back in the tombs), this 3000 year old reverberation became a major part of the sound world that the listener experience. Turas is an electronically mediated journey that allows these historical sites to become an important collaborative factor in the creative process. Guest collaborators include Roger Doyle (Piano), Garreth Quinn Redmond (Violin), and Billy Mag Fhloinn (Yaybahar.) Recorded and Produced by Neil O'Connor between May 2021 and July 2022 at the National Concert Hall Studios, Ballferriter, Co.Kerry, Willem Twee Studios, Den Bosch, Holland and at historical sites around Ireland. Instruments Piano, Bass, Drums, Shakers, Bells, Tambourine. The Unusual Classical Synthesizer - Mike Hankinson
The Unusual Classical Synthesizer, also released under the name The Classical Synthesizer, is an album of classical music performed on an EMS VCS3 synthesizer. The first track is a rendition of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and is fantastic, it was sampled in the song Move by Oh No feat. J Dilla and Roc 'C' (in fact, a YouTube comment from an upload of this album to YouTube from ~2009 is where I first heard of J Dilla) and I would have to say that this is my favorite version of Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. There are some covers of songs that I had not hear before, there is a fantastic performance of the Bach Concerto in A Minor (BWV 593), and the last track is a really nice cover of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. My favorite song is Concerto in A Minor.

Oxygene Pt.4 from Jean-Michel Jarre, released 48 years ago… Famously featuring Jarre’s disembodied head floating around the universe.
Apart from Jean-Michel’s sexy face, the video features a four-cabinet Moog modular synth (anyone know the model?), the famous RMI Harmonic Synthesizer (1974), an EKO ComputeRhythm, and the Eminent 310 (1970), which is the large, dual-manual organ that was always a massive part of JMJ’s sound.
He describes the Eminent 310 as being like three Solina String Ensembles in one box. He would run this and an EMS VCS3 through an Electro-Harmonix Small Stone phaser pedal to get the lush, swooping ambience in his tracks of this era.

First photo of assembled Behringer VCS 3 synthesizer prototype. This recreation of the historic EMS VCS 3 from 1969 will also feature a mechanical spring reverb and real wood cabinet like the original. Simply beautiful!

Moritz von Oswald - Silencio - no trio this time, just Moritz and a 16-voice choir
What are the differences and similarities between human and artificial sound, between oscillations generated by vocal cords and synthesizer voices, voltage amplified by speakers? On Silencio, his latest album for Tresor Records, Moritz von Oswald works with a 16-voice choir to explore this concept. Drawing from the ensemble works of long-standing inspirations Edgard Varèse, György Ligeti and Iannis Xenakis, von Oswald and Vocalconsort Berlin delve into the space between sounds, creating a deeply textured collection that shifts between light & ethereal and dark & dissonant. The compositions were written in von Oswald’s Berlin studio on classic synthesizers, such as the EMS VCS3 & AKS, Prophet V, Oberheim 4-Voice and the Moog Model 15. These abstract recordings were transcribed to sheet music for choir by Berlin-based Finnish composer and pianist, Jarkko Riihimäki and performed by Vocalconsort Berlin in Ölberg church in the city’s Kreuzberg district, only few metres down the road from where Dubplates & Mastering and Hard Wax opened their doors for music enthusiasts for many years so long. The recordings of the choral versions were then incorporated into the synthesized parts of the album and brought into anew electronic context; in Silencio, the focus is not on using one means to imitate the other, but to sonically discuss the tensions and harmonies between the two worlds and create a dialogue between them. Artwork by Cyprien Gaillard.
