Keeping up with 45 hour schedule, Rock Island E8 No. 643 and two booster units lead the Westbound Golden State across the Great Plains region of Kansas. Once arriving at Tucumcari, New Mexico, the train will be handed over to the Southern Pacific for the remainder of the journey to Los Angeles California.

Joliet This image shows a Rock Island outbound commuter train clacking over the ATSF/GM&O tracks at Joliet, Illinois. This has always been a great spot for rail enthusiasts.
The wonderful station here is made from Indiana limestone, of which I'm a fan, growing up amongst the quarries of southern Indiana. The locomotive is an EMD E8A built for the Union Pacific in 1953.

Disco Stripes
New Jersey Transit EMD E8A 4334 (ex-Southern Railway) sits forlornly out back of the Elizabethport shop. It's wearing an odd white paint job with classic NJT "disco stripes".

Just a bit ago, I released a post showing all my OCs from the New York Central System. And like with those OCs, in that past, I made several posts showing my OCs from the Pennsylvania Railroad. So this post will show all the PRR OCs together in one post.

Now these engines are of Norfolk Southern’s Pennsylvania Railroad heritage fleet…

and they can only be found on railroad territories that were once under the jurisdiction and ownership of the Pennsylvania Railroad. And these OC engines from “The Standard Railroad of the World” are…

Six months and counting by Kevin Cavanaugh Via Flickr: IIRC it took five sets of equipment to cover the rotations of the City of Los Angeles/Challenger over the UP/Milwaukee Road between LA and Chicago. Here, are two of the five, meeting at Colton, CA on the Santa Fe's Third District on October 4 , 1970. Eastbound train #104 behind E8A 926 is about to cross the SP while a somewhat tardy train #103 passes by on the adjacent main. #103 was due at San Bernadino straight up at 11:00 AM while #104 was to stop at 2:40 PM. Assuming the e/b was close to on time, this meet should have taken place somewhere between LAUPT and East Los Angeles. Oh well, my win....

Green and Gold

Green and Gold por Joe McMillan Por Flickr: New York Central EMD E8A 4055 idles outside the shop at Harmon, New York, August 7, 1965. This unit was painted black with a gold stripe. This was a one-of-a-kind experimental paint scheme, I believe—photo by Joe McMillan. The 4055 eventually became Amtrak 270 and was retired in May 1976.

La Salle Street Station
Here we see a commuter train in La Salle Street Station. The Rock Island locomotive in an EMD E8A built for the Union Pacific in 1953.
I was fifteen years old at the time, but was able to travel to Chicago with a railroad club. This was really something for a young lad from a smallish Midwestern town. I can't tell you how I, as a budding rail enthusiast, loved the smell of diesel fuel and exhaust.
In the end, I'm glad I got to capture the soon-to-be fallen flags (railroads that ceased to exist) and cab units such as this one. My photography of the time is nothing special in terms of the technique, but serves as a solid record of things that have disappeared from the face of the earth.

PC 4326, South Amboy, NJ
Penn Central power lays over at the former PRR facility in South Amboy a few days before the Conrail startup. E8A 4326 is easily identified as a former New York Central unit as it does not have the lift rings on the nose that was a standard on all covered wagon A units built by EMD for the "Pennsy". The last Pennsylvania RR steam engines ran out of this facility in October of 1957.
