Hi! Your edit for Day 8: Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suruis is really cute!! Would you please make a tutorial for it?
Hi, anon! Thank you!! So glad you like it. (o˘◡˘o)
And sorry for the late reply. Please check the layout tutorial under the cut for this POST.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So you can follow the steps easily, I uploaded the PSD file HERE.
These will be the layers of the file upon opening:
Tumblr media
The SINGLE BOX folder is for the GIF with one image. I turned the visibility off since I wanted to focus on the triple image tutorial. Either way, you will do the same actions for the single box and triple box. If you will use the single box, just turn the visibility on and turn off the TRIPLE BOX and COLOR SWATCHES ELLIPSES folders.
In my original post, I used a pattern and clipped it on the RECTANGLE BG (which is a rectangle shape) but I did not include it on the PSD file because the pattern is not mine. You can use whatever pattern you would like or simply change the rectangle shape's color. To do so, double-click the RECTANGLE BG icon then change the color.
Expand the folder to use the TRIPLE BOX layout:
Tumblr media
For the boxes (TOP, MIDDLE, and BOTTOM), I used the rectangle tool with the following properties on the left side. Then I added Drop Shadow effect for a 3D-ish visual effect using the settings below:
Tumblr media
Feel free to change this setting according to your preference.
The SAMPLE IMAGES will be replaced by your GIFs [if you will use GIFs instead of images]. To add GIF, you need to make sure that your GIF file is using VIDEO timeline instead of FRAME timeline and that it is converted to a SMART OBJECT. [It must be a smart object so you can clip it on the boxes.]
Once you added your GIF/image to the PSD file, make sure that it is one layer above the BOX where you want to place it. Once placed, right-click on the GIF/image, then select Create Clipping Mask.
Tumblr media
If you want to move the image inside the box, make sure that you have selected the image file. If you want to move both the box and the image inside it, select both layers.
Do the same actions on the MIDDLE and BOTTOM BOXES. The same actions also apply to SINGLE BOX.
Next would be the COLOR SWATCHES ELLIPSES:
Tumblr media
I already converted the ellipses to smart objects on the PSD file. To change the colors of the ellipses and other settings, you need to open the smart object by double-clicking the icon. Once opened, another file should open with a .PSB filename.
Tumblr media
To change the colors of the ellipses, just double-click on the individual ellipses layers icons. You can also change the settings by going to properties:
Tumblr media
Once done with the changes, just save it (CTRL+S), then close the PSB tab. The changes should successfully reflect on the PSD file.
NOTE: The TOP ELLIPSES and BOTTOM ELLIPSES are the same smart object. The other one is simply the flipped version of the other. So any changes made to a single smart object will also reflect on the other smart object. If you want to have different colors for the TOP and BOTTOM ELLIPSES, you need to copy the smart object instead. To do this, right-click the smart object, then select New Smart Object via Copy.
Tumblr media
This means that you are trying to create a totally new smart object that will retain its own settings and not be affected by your other existing copied smart objects.
That's it for this tutorial! I hope I explained it clearly but if there are issues with the file I shared or questions on how to use it, feel free to send me an ask or a message.

Nell Shirt Recreation: Collar
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5
As of posting this, my Nell shirt is done!! However the rundown of what I did is probably gonna be split over two more parts after this one due to image limits, but they should be up tomorrow when the lighting is better to get photos.
The tl;dr update:
Tumblr media
Neckline Facing
If you go back to the reference sheet in part 1, you can see there's a lining/facing on the slit in the neckline. Originally I thought it was on the inside of the shirt, but after looking closely at gifs, I think its actually on the outside of the shirt.
However, I didn't realise that until after I had sewn everything, so take everything I do for it and just flip it to the other side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To start, I prepped a rectangle of fabric that would cover the distance I wanted the neckline to open to and then some, and then drew a thread down the middle to mark where I would cut later. On the front body piece, I measured where I wanted the slit to open to, and also drew a thread to mark it. I then basted these two together along that line.
From there, I sewed around this line to join the two pieces together properly, and then cut down the basted line.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
EDIT: If you are using quite a lightweight fabric that tends to fray a lot like I am, consider reinforcing the bottom of the slit where the stitches are incredibly close to the edge. This can probably be done with a dense blanket stitch or some other method. I didn't do this, and the seam split ever so slightly after the first wash and I've had to go back and reinforce it.
You can now flip the facing/lining/whatever you call it and iron it down to get it looking like the below:
Tumblr media
Its at this point that I got lazy and apparently forgot to take pictures of my progress, but on the inside I cut it to shape a point at the bottom, flipped the edges under, and felled around the edges. It ended up looking like this afterwards on the inside:
Tumblr media
Collar
To prep the collar, take the two collar pieces, sew around 3/4 edges and turn and iron it. Please iron your pieces when working with linen, you'll thank yourself for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently at this point I also forgot to take photos 😔. But, the rundown is that i felled down the shoulder seams finally, ran a gathering stitch around where I was going to attach my collar, gather and pinned it to the collar piece, sewed it down with a backstitch on one side, and felled down the remaining edge.
If any of this is not intuitive, please send me an ask/dm or take a look at either of these two videos:
youtube
youtube
Honestly both these are good videos if you want just a generic 18th century shirt, rather than specifically Nell's shirt.
But! That leads us back to the first picture.

mack!!! ik its been a while since you posted your photography portfolio but recently ive found myself going back to it and taking some inspiration from it. i was curious what kind of techniques you used and what processes you kinda went through while making some of the pieces?
OMG REALLY?????? not just being modest but i genuinely think some of it is pretty mediocre, so i'm happy you like it! idk which ones you mean in paticular but some of the more *experimental* ones -
these ones (ignore the bad image quality lol)
Tumblr media
are photograms!! my school has a darkroom which is pretty cool and was wonderful to be able to use!! the main objects in these are actually locks of my hair (i kept if after i got it cut), and after i exposed that onto the paper, instead of just submerging it into the developer i painted it in with a big brush to get the sort of splashed effects (photograms are kind of a thing you need a darkroom for, but you can get paper you can expose with just the sun.)
the bottom left ones are a picture of a picture frame printed out onto transparent plastic, top left are just developer onto the paper with no objects.
i scanned them all and put them into photoshop & upped the contrast, flipped the colours of one furthest - the pinkish bits i did in photoshop, they're kind of pixel-ey which i thought was cool
the one with the key and the ribbon - the ribbon was another photo which i photoshopped around badly on purpose so it was super grainy with lots of leftover pixels around the edge, which i then overlaid on the scan of the photogram with the key (below right is close up of the computery texture i managed to get while fiddling around with curves (idk what exactly curves is but it was like... adjusting contrast & colours at the same time)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these ones (again sorry blurry picture) are a light shining through cd cases from the back, which i then edited to make look grainier and found-film-ier
most of the other photos are just standard pictures i think - the kind of blurry ones of the hair in the middle of panel two were converted to black and white but with the colour levels in the original image changed?? which made them look cooler but i don't really know how to explain it lol. they were done with a macro lens i think.
also here are slightly better quality pictures of the whole thing lol my original post was pretty los res

[image ID: 2 images of the same front-view, full-body screenshot of Sucrose from the game Genshin Impact.
the image first is an unedited screenshot of how Sucrose appears in-game. she's pale-skinned with amber-gold eyes framed by big, round, wood-framed glasses. her minty-teal hair is fluffy and short-cropped, with a long rat tail extending her hair from the back (not visible from this front view). two long, pointed, fox-like ears extend from the sides of her head, matching the color of her hair, and pulled down in a bashful position. Sucrose is wearing a very short black + navy blue skirt/romper with long white sleeves, navy ribbons/frills, and gold filigree accents. she's also wearing a matching hat, gloves, and boots, sheer black stockings, and a short white cape (not very visible from the front).
the second image is a heavily edited version of the first. Sucrose now has a minty-teal, fox-like tail to match her ears. a little doodle to the side shows the rat tail being cut off with an emphatic, "NO!!" she's now wearing a brown vest and brown jodhpur pants with mint/gold accents, while the colors of the gloves and boots have been shifted to match. her cape has been extended into a much longer design, shaped after insect wings with a mint-teal gradient, dark teal "veins", and gold accents. a white/teal lily is pinned just under her hat, with two of the stamens extending out much taller than natural, to give the impression of "insect antennae".
end ID]
WHEW this one was unexpected! I've always thought Sucrose was cute, but I honestly didn't think about her all that much. but the recent Windblume gave me a greater appreciation for her character... as well as a newfound irritation for her outfit, lmao. the more I like a character, the more I end up scrutinizing their outfit, sigh...
anyways, design notes and more in-depth image desc under the cut!
barring Tighnari (he's a special case...), I usually start a redesign with shape design in mind rather than color design, as it comes more naturally to me. but Sucrose flipped the script-- I hate how the navy clashes with the mint more than anything else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image ID: the two versions, cropped to the torso area.
the original design features a skin-tight, black romper, with a short, navy blue "skirt" wrapped over the top, but split down the middle. the bottom edge of the skirt has thick, navy blue frills. long white sleeves with wide, flared cuffs sit on the shoulders, detached from the romper, leaving a gap of bare skin above the bust. an Anemo vision and black/white bow pins the sleeves up at the base of the throat, sitting just under a fluffy black collar. two leather straps are pinned to the sides of the skirt, one side holding bubbling alchemy tubes. gold filigree accents are scattered about, notably large designs on the shoulders, over the sleeves.
the edited design has changed the romper/skirt into a brown vest that flares into a similar "skirt" shape at the hips. the edges are trimmed in gold, the frills at the bottom edge are mint, and the center is buttoned up with shiny, round mint buttons. the sleeves now attach to the main vest, but are a darker brown that fades even darker towards the white/gold cuff. the leather straps now sit above pockets which are sewed in with thick mint thread. the top of the cape now wraps over the top of the shoulders, and is pinned at the base of the throat by the Anemo vision and a mint bow. this part of the cape is white with the same fluffy black collar, and the large, gold filigree designs on the shoulders.
end ID]
I figure that leaning into the mint with a "minty mocha" palette works better, though I may be biased because it's one of my favorite palettes for mint colors, haha.
all this is to say... I really didn't have any ideas for shapes at first (no, I didn't even have the insect theme in mind yet!). I knew I wanted to give her more interesting pants, at least, but nothing felt "right", or it felt overdone (like the poofy-bottom pants I love so much). I think I only landed on jodhpur pants because I was trying to reverse my own "bottom-heavy" tendencies, haha
Tumblr media
[image ID: the edited image, cropped to the pants. these pants flare out wide with extra, poofy fabric at the outside of the hips, then turn sharply back in towards the knees, tapering down into the skin-tight lower legs. they're the same dark brown as the sleeves, and fade to darker brown towards the ends of the pants. the fly is lined with gold, and buttoned with a couple round, teal buttons. the outer sides of the lower legs are lined with a star-tipped gold line, and buttoned with a few teal buttons. end ID]
yes, I know jodhpurs are riding pants, and I... honestly don't even know if Sucrose rides horses in the first place. I usually try to match the practicality of clothing to a character, but I love the shape so much, I just went on ahead with it. maybe she got inspired by Sumeru rider fashion? (and maybe I'll do an alt outfit for Kaeya with jodhpurs? hmm..)
the insect inspiration hit me when I was brainstorming her cape and realized it could reference crystalfly wings!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[image ID: small sketches of the inside and outside of the cape. the cape is shaped vaguely like insect wings, folded back and connected along the seam between each wing. the inner corner of each wing has a long, thin "tail" that flares out into a crescent-like tip. both sides have the gradient of dark-to-light teal, but the outside is notably darker. dark teal "veins" flare across both sides, including the "tails". the main veins have a swirl shape in the center, much like an Anemo crystalfly. both sides are edged in gold trim, but the outside has white section over shoulder area. end ID]
very fitting, since she uses crystalfly constructs in her attacks (though the tails admittedly evoke more "butterfly" than anything)
the cecilia is supposed to add to this "insect" silhouette, evoking "antennae"
Tumblr media
[image ID: a white lily, with the typical 6 large, pointed petals, prominent long pistil, and 6 long, thin stamens. the center is teal fading out to white towards the tips of the petals. the pistil is teal, and the stamens are gold with teal tips. two of the stamens are far longer than normal, curving far above the top edge of the flower. end ID]
I figure this is one of Sucrose' alchemy-mutated specimens, to explain the color and two longer stamens, haha
also, fun fact: I always thought cecilias looked like lilies, so I figured it was just another name for lilies I'd never heard of (or otherwise a similar-looking species). so I google cecilias, and what do I find?? it's not a name for any real-life flower-- Genshin cecilias are just misnamed lilies. bizarre Genshin naming conventions strike again (don't look at the animal or ingredient archive too hard if ur a biologist, u might go insane...)
as for the tail, well. can you blame me?
Tumblr media
[image ID: a small doodle of the fox tail, hanging comfortably limp. much like the ears, the base color is a light mint, which fades to darker teal at the tip. end ID]
it makes no sense to me that Sucrose and Yae Miko are the only animal-people in the game that don't have tails to match their ears. throw us furries a goddamn bone for once!!
(the cynical part of me thinks it's because fluffy fox tails block the ass too much from the back, unlike thin cat tails, but I can only speculate...)
anyways, since we don't know Sucrose's species, I just went with a fox-like tail, since her ear shape matches Yae's

[Image ID: A doodle page featuring my Spider-sona (named Isaac) and their parasite (named Impulse), In the top right corner is a spiderweb with the name "Oil" in it's centre, in the top left corner is a stylized doodle of Isaac with their sleeves rolled up and bandages around their wrists with a caption that reads: "Their web glands got infected", below that are three doodles of Isaac in their Spider-suit with various expressions, in the bottom left corner is a doodle of an alternate reality Miles Morales looking back at Isaac who is throttling Impulse telling it to shut up, while the parasite is screaming "Unhand me", in the lower middle is a small doodle of the spider-sona in action, in the bottom right is a doodle of Isaac lying on their back with a tired expression while Impulse is sitting next to them holding their phone, above them is a screenshot of the Caramelldansen music video, just above that doodle is a smaller drawing of Isaac sewing some fabric while Impulse watches, and finally in the upper-right we have a chest-up doodle of Isaac looking annoyed while six arms stretch from the back, one holding a bubble tea, one waving, one stretching, two patting and poking Isaac's head, and the last one "flipping off" an unseen party. /End ID] Apologies for repetition within the ID, it's been a while
THEY ARE SO..... I loved doodling them, I haven't been able to draw for a while because of my tablet but I've temporarily remedied the problem I need to draw more skits in general tbh
The Earth-9101 story is still in the works but 9101-Miles is the Steel Spider, I haven't thought out his design yet but it's gonna be siiick
Villains are also in the works

@stargirl-3000 Hiii!!! First of all , thank you!! Also sorry for the wait, I realized that if i want to show how i did stuff, I will have to create a new head and screenshot the progress and it took me a bit because of irl work. but it's alright because you were very nice to me and I want to at least try helping out as much as I can :]
I'll show how i create a head from start to finish because i don't really know how to better explain my workflow because i'm not very good at explaining things i think, so it will be the most straightforward way
images will be smashed together because tumblr image limit is a thing
so for this tutorial i'll be making the head for Cure La Mer from Tropical Rouge Precure
Tumblr media
First i got a bunch of references
it seems her eyes are usually closer together and bigger in the show while the official art above has them further apart, i'll go with the show look since it's cuter imo
Tumblr media
get the front and side and set them up in blender
when doing Belles head i followed this tutorial i found because it was the only one that explained what keys to press and what they do, so for the general shaping i referred back to this video for reference
youtube
make the mouth, and then when shaping the eyes follow the reference images very close, remember to shape them from the side too. extrude some vertices to start filling in the mesh. also don't forget eye sockets and mouth like i did down there
Tumblr media
ngl i could probably do less polygons and it would still be fine since i added subdivision later anyway
Select an edge, duplicate it and separate it by selection. then start extruding from the edge and start outlining the eyelash shape
i usually stylize the eyelashes to be very long or give them fun shapes :]
for individual lashes i subdivided the edges till i got the vertices to line up and extruded further, then merged the last two for a sharp end
Tumblr media
don't forget to line up from the side
(note: my references don't match up ideally but just moved them around to help me with the shape)
This next one is something you should probably not do since it's kinda useless and here i could 100% get away with it just being on texture but i just wanted to do it
so i did the bottom eyelash too :]
Tumblr media
next you select the eyelash, extrude it somewhere near, then select the ends of the eyelashes and merge them so they can stay sharp
note: i dissolved the middle row of polygons because they were useless in the long run
Tumblr media
you can push one side a bit into the skin so it fits the skull, watch out for bits like this and fix them
Tumblr media
repeat with bottom eyelash if you did one
realize i'm stupid and forgot the mouth. speedrun the thing
Tumblr media
now the eye. get the circle and scale it to the reference, rotate slightly to fit the side
Tumblr media
extrude twice to make two rings, one will be the basis for the outline and the other one for the pupil
Tumblr media
push the second ring and middle vertex slightly inside for a slight illusion of depth, then extrude the whole thing inside
Tumblr media
now the highlight, get circle and shape accordingly, remember the side
also remember to no be like me and hit the F key to fill the highlight
Tumblr media
adding the pearl thingies :]
Tumblr media
now do the eyebrows like you did the eyelashes
Tumblr media
now go here and hit "face orientation", you will see they don't match, go to edit mode, select the parts and do alt+n to bring up the menu and flip them
Tumblr media
Now go into viewport right click the eyelashes to see this menu, hit shade auto smooth, 180 gives soft shading and zero gives very harsh one where you can see every line, for me 30 worked just right
Tumblr media
check this specific angle to see if it looks alright, mine didn't so i fixed it
Tumblr media
now take an edge again, dupe it, and extrude. shape from the side and then check if it overlaps with the eye, if so, push it back a little bit
Tumblr media
so for the ear followed this guy's tutorial (ear part is at 21:32, also turn on captions), i recommend the whole video it's good,
it seems like i added subdivide modifier at this point too
youtube
Tumblr media
now for the fun part- textures!
i will be doing my textures in clip studio paint
first you're gonna download this bad boy, it will give you an option to reload the tex from blender without having to go to materials tab every time
mark your seams and click live unwrap, see if the uv satisfies you , you can scale it and move it around, it might take a few tries to get the seams right, but you'll get it right eventually
Tumblr media
when you're satisfied export the uv, also when exporting i recommend setting it to 2000px square and setting the fill capacity to 0, more than that will fill the uv with white and it's annoying
Tumblr media
block out the colors :] I usually color pick from my references
Tumblr media
then gradually add more needed detail according to the reference
Tumblr media Tumblr media
your texture will most likely look rather simple and that's alright! less is more in some cases!
i also wanted to give her some finishing touches so we'll add a solidify for lines and some simple shading
follow this video for the lines (4:32), and this simple shader setup which you can copy from here too
youtube
Tumblr media
the shadows don't look the best at certain light angles but it works for something quick and simple until i learn something more advanced
Tumblr media
Congratulations!!! We now have a head!!
The main things that i think are important are: following the reference shapes and letting the texture carry the whole thing lmao. just trust the processes
honestly you can just follow the reference slightly and then go ham doing whatever with the textures and colors! go wild like fan artists do!
you can now do stuff like rigging and blend shapes but i haven't touched those yet
I don't know how to end this so if you have any questions let me know and have a good night!!
BEHOLD
My first model in blender :]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's probably not very good on a technical level but I'm still very proud of it
Her face turned out sooo good she looks so cute when facing the front
Also have this first try that looked so ugly I redid the whole thing

Kay's Guide to Runic Writing in HTTYD
Hi! Welcome to my slapped together guide to reading text in HTTYD.
The main section of legible text in the Book of Dragons and other written materials in the HTTYD movies uses a simplified form of Younger Futhark.
What is Younger Futhark?
Younger Futhark is a simplified and evolved form of Elder Futhark. YF appeared around the 9th century, and corresponded with the Viking Age. I've included the Runes source in a link with the first image if you wanna explore it for yourself.
Tumblr media
The top row of runes (red) are specifically the Danish version of YF. The middle and bottom rows are Norwegian and Swedish. I've shown the HTTYD specific runes so you can see the changes made, which is mostly just using the same runes for multiple letters since they needed all 26. All the legible writing in the HTTYD movies are transliterated English, just using the runes instead of our known alphabet. This makes it pretty easy to learn to read and write it with a guide or some good memorization.
The letters M and L use the Swedish/Norwegian version of the runes. Why? I don't know. They also use ür for 5 different letters so I'm not questioning it.
If you see on the HTTYD runes list, there are two written for the letter H. As far as I've been able to see, the only time the second one has been used is for Night Fury in the Book of Dragons. I've assumes this is for stylistic choices, as it is not a H rune in any of the source lists used.
Tumblr media
Below, we can see an example of the complex H rune in the name Thunderdrum. Its actually written Thunderdum here, and I'm assuming that since the handwriting is bad, that the character who wrote it spelled it wrong.
Tumblr media
While I do believe that was simply spelled wrong, there are other places where a CK is combod as just a K like below in the Timberjack title.
Tumblr media
While some of the text in these pages is legible, there are side/background paragraphs that, to my knowledge, are not. These side paragraphs appear to be written in Elder Futhark, or a version thereof, and are not written normally. Some paragraphs are backwards, and flipped runes, repeating 'words', and symbols i cant identify at all.
Tumblr media
Take a look at this paragraph on the Whispering death. Using the Elder Futhark list, the first line reads zpl(th)izpdo. The only thing I can fathom this referencing is the word Zippleback but ehhhh. Its also flipped horizontally, as all of those runes are backwards. Granted, I can't actually read Old Norse, but some of the runes on the second line I can't find any reference to.
You should absolutely take all of this with knowing that I am most definitely not an expert in any of this, this is just a special interest I decided to finally write up on after first getting it together four years ago lol.
*If there is any additional information I find or put together, I will update this post with edit date timestamps*
Enjoy and write!

Meet Dev
Tumblr media
Art by @enspey
Name: Dev Vaghela
Gender: Nonbinary (Xe/Xem), Cisgender Man (He/Him), or Cisgender Woman (She/Her)
Identity: Bisexual, grayromantic, polyamorous
Species: Human
Status: Alive
Age: 29 (by the time you meet xem)
Occupation: Private Investigator and Monster Hunter (+ "Former" Criminal)
Adjectives: Playful, Observant, Impulsive, Sarcastic, Daring
Personality: Dev is a daring, confident, spontaneous, and often reckless individual. Xe is persistent, curious, and nosy but respects xyr allies' privacy—mainly because xe wants xyr own privacy respected. Argumentative and unafraid of conflict, Dev isn't one to back down from a fight. However, xe always seems to be running from some aspect of xyr past and it seems like if xe is pushed too far, xe's unafraid to cut and run at any moment. Dev is a charismatic and passionate person with a silver-tongue and the wits and insight to convince people of almost anything. Socially insightful and inhumanly observant, xe has no trouble finding out what others want and using their desires to satisfy xyr own. Xe is quite cynical—often about people's true natures and intents—though there is something about xem which can't help but hope for the best. Dev likes to say that xe doesn't care what others think about xem but xe has tried very hard to change xyr image for someone who apparently doesn't care how others percieve xem. Deceit is a natural defense mechanism for xem (and though xe will brag about how good of a liar xe is, Dev secretly loathes this aspect of xemself). Dev tries xyr best to come off as purely arrogant and unfeeling, but xe cares very deeply for xyr close allies and—when tested—xyr loyalty always trumps xyr instinct for self-preservation.

Original artbreeders by me, edited by the incredible, wonderful, and talented @lapinlunaire-games 💜
Height: 6'0" / 183 cm
Body Type: Slender with lean, toned muscles
Hair: Long (lower back), wavy (2A/2B), very dark brown (almost black), shorter pieces around xyr face (like xe had bangs that are growing out)
Eyes: Smiling, upturned, dark brown (right), purple (left)
Skin: Warm brown, covered in tattoos (most are of plants and nature, others look like fay designs)
Other: Many asymmetrical ear piercings, nostril piercing, nipple piercings (mismatched silver and gold metals), left eye normally covered by a black eye patch, short line shaved in xyr right eyebrow
Style: Somewhat understated (for xyr personality at least), like a punk kid who grew up and got a job in an office building. Xe likes wearing leather jackets, trench coats, good denim, and boots. Most of xyr clothing is black or very dark colors. Xe is also frequently seen wearing xyr motorcycle gear including a sleek black helmet, a thick leather jacket, and (if xe's going a long distance) matching leather pants. Regardless of gender, Dev tends to wear pants but it's worth noting that xe's never opposed to wearing a hot ass dress (and Dev knows xe'd look sexy as Hell). For more on Dev's style click here.

A Favor: Part Twenty-Nine
Nessian Modern AU
Masterlist
a/n: not an ending, but a middle.
this chapter was ridiculously difficult to write and edit. it tops out at 7.5k words so… beware
***
Cassian and Nesta make full use of the summer house without his friends there, making love on every other surface just because they’re all alone and they can. Nesta shows a soft spot in particular for having sex in Cassian’s old bed, proving to him that she can be just as sentimental as he is.
Which is how they end up sprawled naked on the living room floor early the next morning, fast asleep in each other’s arms with nothing but a throw blanket to cover them.
Cassian is woken up by the sound of the front door being flung open, followed promptly by a feminine yelp as the intruder catches sight of the tangled couple in the living room. “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.”
Cassian whips his head up to find who interrupted his sleep, and his nostrils flare in shock when he sees Mor at the entryway. He carefully but swiftly moves his arm out from under Nesta’s head and replaces it with a nearby pillow before starting to stand up. “What the hell are you doing—”
“Fuck no, I can see your ass—No, now I can see your dick!” Mor squeals in disgust, promptly spinning around and clapping her hands over her eyes like she can burn the image out of her mind.
“Will you shut the fuck up?” Cassian whisper-hisses at her, throwing a worried glance at Nesta’s still sleeping form. She doesn’t shift an inch.
Scooping up his flannel sleep pants from the floor, Cassian pulls them on while Mor makes gagging noises with her back to him.
Spying a pair of underwear flung over the arm of a chair, she bends to pick them up with two pinched fingers and turns to face Cassian, who’s now appropriately covered. Heavy judgment wrinkles her nose as she casts a glance to the owner of the panties, then to Cassian. “Granny panties, Cass? Is this what your sex life has been reduced to?”
“Don’t touch Nesta’s underwear.” He stalks over to Mor and snatches them out of her hand, before grabbing her by the elbow and dragging her off into the kitchen.
She shakes him off once they’re out of earshot from Nesta and takes a seat across from him at the wooden breakfast table. She brushes her golden hair over a shoulder and smirks. “Someone’s been having fun on their own while waiting for the rest of the party to arrive.”
“What are you doing here?” Cassian repeats.
Mor waves a languid hand dismissively. “I ended up taking a commercial flight. I wasn’t a fan of being stuck on the same private plane as Az and Elain.”
Cassian blows out a tight breath, wishing he’d at least gotten some warning before his plans for the day were ruined. Plans that included taking Nesta in the lake before breakfast.
“But seriously,” Mor glances over her shoulder in the direction of the living room, “what’s up with the prude panties? I thought you would’ve thawed that ice pussy by n…” She trails off at the look on Cassian’s face, and a glimpse of fear crosses her own face. She forces a nervous laugh and twists her fingers together. “I suddenly remember making a promise a while ago,” she murmurs while staring down at the table.
“It’s a good thing you remember,” Cassian says stoically, “because I was just about to bring it up.”
“I know, I know, no criticizing your girlfriend.” Mor rolls her eyes.
“It’s about a lot more than that,” he grits. “It’s about how you’re only wary of her because you don’t trust me to choose who I give my love to. It’s about how you don’t respect my decision enough to maintain boundaries when you talk about Nesta.”
For once, Mor looks put off her game. “I never meant it like that,” she tries to say.
“That’s what it looks like,” Cassian retorts. “It looks like you’re judging someone you have no right to judge, like you’re trying to protect me from an imaginary threat.”
Mor coughs aloud. “Do I really need a scolding for a girl I see maybe twice a year? I haven’t even thought about Nesta since the New Year’s party.”
“It’s not a scolding,” Cassian says firmly. “It’s an order to be on your best behavior for the duration of this vacation, because the sisters and I went through a lot to get Nesta to come here. There will be no catfights, or backtalk, or rude looks and snide tones until we’ve returned home. The same applies for everyone else once they get here.”
“Or, how about this? I’ll stop making ice pussy jokes if you stop being this…” Mor waves a hand up and down at Cassian’s shirtless figure with a grimace, “unrecognizable creature with the tension of a forty year old single dad.”
Is Cassian tense? Of course he’s fucking tense. The last time he convinced Nesta to go to a family event with him was Christmas Eve, and he’s never letting that mistake be repeated ever again. His glare confirms it.
“Morrigan,” he says lowly with a hint of warning.
“Okay, okay,” she exclaims, throwing her hands up in surrender. “But for the record, I’ve never said anything rude to your girlfriend’s face, and I never plan to.”
Cassian crosses his brown arms across his chest. “No, you’ve only done it to my face.”
Guilt crosses Mor’s features for the quickest second. “Oh.” She bites her bottom lip. “In that case, I’ll pull back from now on.”
He releases a terse breath. “Good.” Now to hammer the message into anyone else who might threaten the quiet solitude he and Nesta have found here.
“I didn’t mean to hurt you,” she adds somewhat apologetically. “You know I just want the best for you.”
“And you know I already know what’s best for me.”
Mor dips her head in reluctant acknowledgment. “Can we go back to normal, then? I don’t like feeling like your adversary.”
Cassian’s shoulders slump in relief, and his crossed arms fall away. “Of course, Mor.”
Like flipping a switch, Mor claps her hands together. “Good. I left my luggage in the rental car and it’s super heavy; I brought enough clothes for three outfit changes a day. Why don’t you put those big strong muscles to work while I get settled into my room?”
Before Cassian can object, she’s out of her seat and flouncing out of the kitchen. From the entry hall, Cassian can hear Mor say perkily, “Good morning, Nesta! Love the undies.”
Cassian drops his head onto the table with a thud, lifts it, then drops it again. Mor is going to be a work in progress.
“You okay?” A voice makes Cassian look up from the wooden table. Nesta stands in the kitchen entryway wearing nothing but Cassian’s shirt, and her hair is a rumpled mess from sleep. Her hands twisting into the hem of his tee tells him she couldn’t be less excited about Mor’s early arrival, though the rest of her doesn’t show it.
Exhausted apprehensiveness drops in Cassian’s gut. “How much of that did you hear?” he asks warily.
“Not much. I just woke up a minute ago and heard your voices.” She comes over to him and wraps a comforting arm around his shoulder. “Why, were you guys arguing?”
Cassian slings his arm around Nesta’s waist, basking in her warmth. “Not exactly.”
She frowns. “Was it about me?”
“It was about Mor.”
She nudges him. “Will you tell me about it?”
“No,” he quips, yanking her down onto his lap. He pecks a kiss onto her lips. “It’s nothing you need to worry about.”
Nesta hums to herself. “So our morning plans are out the window?” she asks, raising a brow.
“Yup.”
“Does Mor actually like my undies?”
“Nope.”
***
The rest of Cassian’s friends and Nesta’s family arrive by late afternoon, piling out of a dark SUV in a frenzy of noise and colors. Nesta forgot how… many of them there were.
She lets Cassian and Mor handle the greetings, choosing to observe everyone from her spot near the stairs.
Azriel is the first to catch her eyes. He looks the same as ever, dressed head to toe in black even in the middle of a heat wave. Elain is an overdressed peacock in comparison to him, not that anyone would be comparing them, because they carefully stand at opposite ends of the entry hall.
He sends a simple nod Nesta’s way, which makes her narrow her eyes. Does he think he can act too cool for her just because they haven’t talked in a while? Idiot.
Feyre notices Nesta next and waves her arms wildly. “Get over here!”
Nesta reluctantly pulls away from the banister and nears their group, offering only a half smile to everyone there before hiding behind her sisters. Cassian cuts a glance her way in solidarity, and it feels like a pillar of reinforcement against her wavering self. She scrambles around for a solid ten seconds for something to say, either to her sisters or to the whole group, and finally comes up with, “What are we having for dinner?”
“That’s still hours away,” Rhysand assures. “Everyone scram and put your shit up first.”
“The girl has a point,” Amren grumbles. “I’m starving.”
“Yeah, Rhys, can we have an early dinner?” Mor whines.
And just like that, Nesta has melted into the background again. Which might be for the best, considering how loud it is right now.
Feeling overwhelmed, Nesta checks on Feyre and Elain to make sure they’re not paying attention to her, and then meets Cassian’s gaze through all the luggage and bodies. Tilting her head toward the back door to let him know that she’s leaving, she silently slips down the hall and out of the house.
Outside in the gardens, the light breeze soothes her heightened senses. It’s hot as shit at this hour, but she’ll take it for the peace and quiet.
Only a few minutes into her getaway, however, Nesta hears the porch door open behind her. Her shoulders stiffen when she hears footsteps that don’t belong to Cassian. There goes her peace and quiet.
Nesta is surprised to find Amren slinking up to her side, her small head appearing at Nesta’s shoulder.
Discomfort crawls through Nesta’s bones at the woman’s unexpected presence. It’s a subtle sense of wrongness, like being in the proximity of a predator but not having enough information to guess how they’ll attack.
“Hiding out from Rhysie’s big bad inner circle?” Amren taunts.
Nesta stiffens. Just because it’s true doesn’t mean it needs to be thrown in her face.
“I suppose I can’t blame you,” she goes on. “We can be a scary group.”
“I’m not scared of anybody,” Nesta says, keeping her focus glued to the trees’ cherry blossoms. “I just wanted fresh air.”
“And I’ve wanted to find out what Cassian sees in you ever since he gave me that verbal lashing about being nice to his new girlfriend.” Amren turns to face Nesta fully, closing in. “What kind of pussy grip can a woman have to make Cassian of all men heel?” She hisses in a thoughtful breath through her teeth.
Nesta only shrugs, but her interest is piqued at the idea of Cassian warning Amren away from her. She definitely doesn’t need the protection, and once would have found it offensive, but… she likes the idea of someone standing up for her, being unapologetically on her side even if they have no good reason to do it. The only other times she can remember feeling defended were brief, subtle childhood instances with Feyre and Elain, and that was only because blood instinctively defends blood. It’s different to feel chosen. It makes her chest crack.
When Nesta doesn’t respond, Amren throws out, “Are you on the spectrum or what?”
Nesta again doesn’t reply.
“No one mentioned it, but I assumed as soon as I saw you.”
“It’s rude to make assumptions,” Nesta says, her voice cool as a running river.
Amren barks a laugh that sounds like a whip lashing. “I like you, girl.”
Nesta finally meets Amren’s silver gaze and states, “I don’t like you.” Her tone is blunt, to the point—but if she has to participate in this twisted version of small talk, then she should at least get to be honest.
Amren laughs aloud again, as if that genuinely amuses her. Nesta doesn’t know how amused Amren will be when she realizes that Nesta is serious.
She shrugs to herself, turning back to face the garden. It isn’t her problem, she decides.
***
“Even for you, this is overprotective.” Rhys’s voice comes from behind Cassian, who stands at the sliding glass door at the back of the kitchen that peers out onto the gardens. He’s been watching Amren converse with Nesta for the last seven minutes—or rather, he’s been watching Nesta, inspecting her body language to gauge her discomfort.
It was a struggle not to hold his arm across the back door and block Amren from following after Nesta earlier. Amren had the look of a cat going out to play with a new toy, and Cassian had nearly snarled at her for it until she gave him that expression: the raised brow and sneer that said Really, Cassian? Pathetic.
It made him think of how Nesta would feel if she knew he was trying to physically keep people away from her, and he managed to have enough shame to move aside and let Amren pass with only a warning look.
So far though, it looks like Nesta is handling herself just fine. He should’ve known better than to underestimate her.
When Rhys doesn’t get a response, he comes up to stand at Cassian’s side and get a look through the glass door. “I never thought you’d be applying your passion for security to your damn girlfriend.” Rhys lets out a low whistle.
Without taking his eyes off Nesta and Amren, Cassian tells Rhys, “Protecting her is protecting myself. When she gets hurt, I feel it twofold.” And he really doesn’t want to be hurt on this vacation. Nesta already thinks he’s a crybaby as it is.
Rhys is silent for a long minute, as if he can’t deny that he would feel the same way for his own girlfriend. Eventually he says, “I might finally understand what’s going on in your brain whenever you’re around her.”
Cassian only nods.
Rhysand claps his hand down suddenly on Cassian’s shoulder, breaking the somberness of his confession. “Call them in to help make dinner,” Rhys orders. “I want all hands on deck tonight.”
Cassian looks at his brother with narrowed eyes. “And what will you be doing to help?”
“I’ll be watching the game on the nice TV that I paid for, in the beautiful new living room I also paid for.”
“Bastard.”
***
Nesta and Azriel help prepare dinner in silence. Their quiet acknowledgment of each other is better than any words could be, but it’s all shattered when Mor dumps a serving platter on the counter right next to Azriel.
“Ooh, ricotta-stuffed mushrooms!” She grabs a handful and starts arranging them onto her platter. “Az, how was your mystery weekend away? I haven’t seen you since you got back.”
Azriel shares an unreadable glance with Nesta before sliding his chicken parmesan dish toward her and saying loudly, “Wow, is that football?” He promptly turns around and walks out of the kitchen.
Nesta glares after him in disbelief, but Azriel can’t hear her wordless cries for help because he’s already in the living room.
Left alone at the kitchen counter with Morrigan, Nesta keeps wiping at the wine glasses that have been gathering dust in the cupboards. From the corner of her eye, she can see that Mor’s mouth is tightened into a displeased line.
Not that Nesta isn’t grateful for it, but Mor usually isn’t one to keep her mouth shut. She wonders if something is wrong that she doesn’t know about. “You look constipated,” Nesta tells Mor under her breath. “Anything you want to get out?”
Mor only scoffs in indignation. Then she shakes her head and mutters to herself, “I promised not to say anything.”
Now Nesta is really intrigued. “Promised who?” she prods. “Cassian?”
“Like you don’t know about it.” Mor rolls her dark eyes.
Nesta doesn’t know, though after Amren’s comment earlier she might have a hint. “I would prefer you be honest with me rather than follow Cassian’s orders.”
“That’s funny, so do I.” Mor plucks up a stuffed mushroom and shoves it into her mouth.
Nesta thinks back to how she woke up to Cassian and Mor’s voices lowered in seriousness. After what Nesta overheard on New Year’s Eve, it’s no secret that Morrigan doesn’t care for her, but she suddenly has the urge to have it said to her face. “Well, if you want to stop holding back with me, I won’t tell.”
Morrigan sets down her mushroom platter with a thump, turning to face Nesta like she’s done her a personal wrong. “You know what I know about you, Nesta?” Mor says. “I know that Cassian has changed since he’s gotten with you. I know that he’s more serious whenever he’s around you. I know that you don’t love him as much as he loves you. How can Cassian expect me to trust someone that doesn’t want to be around his own family? How can he expect me to trust you with his heart? Not that I’m allowed to be saying any of this, because I’m supposed to be hiding my feelings about you to stop my best friend from hating me.”
It’s crazy how a year ago those words would have been enough to make Nesta retreat to her room and never come out again. Each statement pricks like a shard of glass against her skin, though none of them are accurate or true.
And yet Nesta finds herself hurting more for Cassian than for herself. She feels her familiar old mask go up around her face and harden there.
“It sounds like your problem is more with Cassian than it is with me,” Nesta says stoically. “Because I won’t be going through any trials to prove myself. I have nothing to prove. I don’t care if you like me or not, if you’re nice to my face or cruel behind my back—but it’s rude to shit over your friend’s life choices like that. He’ll stop trusting you if you keep it up, and it won’t be my fault when it happens,” Nesta finishes. She wordlessly gathers the wine glasses in her hands and abandons a silent Morrigan to go set the table.
Nesta knows the dynamic at dinner is off with her presence there.
For once, Cassian’s priorities lie somewhere other than laughing with his friends. He keeps a protective hand on Nesta’s thigh from the moment they take their seats, and he only removes it when he’s filling her plate with food.
With memories of Christmas dinner hanging over all of them, Cassian looks like a bodyguard prepared for attack— except he’s contributing to a good half of the tension at the table.
“How was the drive here?” Feyre pokes at the two of them in an attempt to break the ice. Nesta glances to Cassian for his response, but his attention is taken by the platter of bread rolls.
Sighing internally, Nesta answers, “Better than yours, that’s for sure.”
Everyone laughs hesitantly. A steaming bread roll then appears on Nesta’s plate, golden and fluffy with a buttery aroma; one glance at the rest of the bread tells her it was the biggest roll in the pile.
Nesta drops her walls enough to give Cassian a small smile and an arm rub of appreciation, and then she reaches straight for the bottle of wine.
She loves Cassian and hates this dinner too much to allow this to go on.
After filling Cassian’s empty glass high with Merlot, Nesta presses it into his free hand with a subtle kiss on his cheek. “Relax a little,” she murmurs into his ear.
It takes ten minutes and two full glasses for her plan to take effect, but relax Cassian does. Like oil slipping through rusted gears, the tension in the room slowly unwinds and natural conversation starts to flow.
“You guys will not believe what I had to walk in on this morning,” Mor announces at one point during the meal.
“Yeah, yeah, Cassian’s ass and dick, we’ve already heard,” Amren says.
Cassian’s glare at Mor is more lighthearted than life-threatening. “This is why I can’t talk to you anymore,” he states, pointing a finger at her. Nesta is so glad for the lack of tension in his shoulders that she doesn’t even care if everyone basically knows about her having sex in the living room.
With Cassian acting more like his normal self, the pressure to make useless small talk is no longer on her. Nesta is content to watch everybody share stories and laughter, but for once she doesn’t feel like an audience member on the outside looking in. Maybe it’s because no matter how much Cassian drinks, his hand stays steady on her leg the whole night, keeping her rooted there with everybody else. He doesn’t let her fade into the background for a second.
“What’s that on your wrist, Az?” Mor’s voice rings from one head of the table. Azriel snatches his hand back in a flash before Mor can reach for it. From his other side, Nesta grabs it smoothly out of the air to take a look at the cause of Mor’s question.
She raises her brow at the sight of three colorful bracelets lining Azriel’s right wrist.
Az tries to pull his hand away, but Nesta’s hold is tight. Even if the signature of the maker wasn’t stamped onto one of the childish bracelets, she would know who had made them with one glance.
“What does it say?” Mor asks her.
“Nothing. Just some beads.” Nesta pulls Azriel’s dark sleeve over the beads that spell out GWYN’S BITCH and gives his arm a little pat. She sincerely hopes Elain is thoroughly over Azriel by now.
“Was that Rainbow Loom I saw? Since when did you wear kiddy bracelets?” Mor snorts at Az.
Nesta’s attention is pulled away from their conversation by a heavy head falling onto her shoulder. “Nestaaa,” Cassian slurs, slumping against her side.
Blushing at the attention he’s drawing to her, Nesta tries to shove a drunk Cassian back upright. “I think we need to get you to bed.”
“Oh really? Promise you’ll tuck me in?” He tries to wink at her, but it comes off as a strained blink.
He looks ridiculous. It isn’t helping the blush on her cheeks, though.
“I promise.” Nesta shoves her finished plate aside and grabs Cassian by the bicep, standing up and attempting to drag him with her. “Come on, I’ll take you right now.”
Mor is quick to get to her feet. “We can take him,” she offers eagerly.
“Who’s we?” Azriel mutters. Nesta hears a hard stomp, and then Az is coughing, jumping out of his seat after Mor. “Yeah, we’ll take him,” he says.
Nesta reluctantly lets Cassian slip out of her grasp as Morrigan and Azriel take one of his arms from either side.
“Wait, but I want Nesta to tuck me in!” Cassian twists around as he’s dragged away, drunkenly finding Nesta’s gaze. He’s pouting.
Affection battles with secondhand embarrassment and wins. “I’ll be right there,” she promises with a wave. As soon as Mor and Azriel accomplish whatever it is they’re trying to accomplish. Her voice flattens into a cold warning when she adds after them, “Be careful with him.”
Daring a quick glance back at the table, Nesta wants to cringe when she meets everyone else’s eyes. Rhysand looks highly amused. Feyre looks disturbed, and Elain looks glum with envy, the love-obsessed bitch. Amren is Amren.
After dinner is over, dishes duty is handed over to Rhysand and Amren goes off to bed complaining about beauty sleep, which leaves Nesta alone with her sisters in the foyer.
She doesn’t quite know how, but she ends up forgetting her promise to Cassian and following the girls out to the front porch for some fresh air instead. The sun has long since set, taking some of the summer heat with it, but the air is still stuffy as the three of them settle down onto hand-painted wooden chairs. Lanterns on the porch are lit up to keep the darkness away, and the lake before them gleams with the reflection of the rising moon.
Feyre is the first to speak, her voice hesitant. “It’s hot out tonight, isn’t it?”
“I’m not doing this,” Elain announces. She stands abruptly from her chair and goes back inside.
Nesta and Feyre stare wide-eyed after the swinging front door, but a minute later Elain returns holding a decanter and three crystal glasses. She sets the glasses down on a side table and starts pouring. “It’s not really Tennessee without a strong whiskey,” she says to no one. “And I’m way too sober right now to handle this vacation.” The third glass gets an extra finger of liquor, and it ends up in Elain’s hand. She passes the other two to Nesta and Feyre before settling back into her seat.
Nesta grimaces at the drink in her hand without even tasting it. She hates most alcohol, but strong alcohol especially. For the sake of her sisters, however, she throws back half the glass without thinking.
Liquid fire scalds her tongue and throat, and she groans aloud. Instant regret.
Elain has no such issues downing her liquor. “Did you know,” she says after swallowing a gulp of whiskey like it’s apple juice, “that our old place is just a mile and a half that way?” She waves with her glass toward the back gardens.
“Is it really that close?” A frown wrinkles Feyre’s brow, like the memory of their old home might taint the perfect life she has now.
“Yes,” Nesta confirms. She doesn’t offer anything else.
Feyre shudders despite the temperature. “I hate even thinking about it. It’s so depressing. Reminds me of Papa.”
Which is also depressing, Nesta thinks to herself.
“It wasn’t depressing for me,” Elain says, chin tilted up in defiance.
That doesn’t surprise Nesta. Even in the depths of their father’s patheticness, he was Elain’s favorite man on earth.
Nesta used to wonder how her papa would have reacted if Elain was the one with crippling endometriosis pain every month instead of her. Would he have ignored her cries like he ignored Nesta’s, or would he have come running to her aid?
It’s not a question that’s worth Nesta’s time and energy, though. Not when the man himself has long been six feet under. Instead she pokes at Elain, “Then why did you hide your background from every guy you met like you were ashamed of it?”
“I was ashamed,” Elain says primly, “but that doesn’t mean I hated all of it. We didn’t all grow up with a ten foot stick up our ass; at least I could appreciate what we had without taking my attitude out on everybody else.”
The whiskey must be working quickly, because Nesta can’t hold back an unseemly snort. “There you go again,” she drawls in a cutting tone, pointing an accusing finger with the hand that holds her glass at Elain. “Dishing out shit when you can’t take it back. At least not without crying.”
Feyre, who was trying to hide her cringe with the rim of her drink, now perks up with eagerness. “She does do that, doesn’t she?” she exclaims. “I thought I was the only one who noticed.”
Elain’s lips twist into an indignant sneer. “What’s this dynamic now, why’s everyone ganging up on me?”
Nesta mutters, “Because you need to hear it every now and then.” Turning to Feyre, she adds, “God, she can be fucking annoying.”
“Oh, like you’re everyone’s favorite person to be around?” Elain scoffs.
“At least I don’t pretend to be something I’m not. That’s called a con artist, Elain. You’re a con artist.”
There’s stunned silence for a tense moment—and it’s broken by full laughter. Elain is chuckling sweetly as she says, “Well, I suppose it’s okay if only you two are the ones who notice it. It can be our little secret.” She presses a finger to her pink lips.
Feyre giggles along at that too, but Nesta remains quiet. Too sober for the current mood, perhaps. “Do you think someone will notice at one point?” she asks Elain. “That the smiles and Southern charm and—the kindness...” She doesn’t know how to feel about that word in relation to Elain. “Do you think someone will notice that that’s not all there is to you?”
Elain’s grinning face freezes quicker than an actress’s. “No one will know,” she answers smoothly, “because I’m not going to be with anyone else for a while.”
At the confused silence filled only by the chirp of cicadas, Elain supplements, “I’m trying out the single life.”
Nesta meets Feyre’s eyes, and it only catalyzes the sound quelling up in her throat. At the same moment, the two sisters burst into cackling laughter. Well, Feyre cackles. Nesta makes a noise that imitates a dying whale.
“I’m serious,” Elain insists, glaring at them. “If Nesta could spend all those years living like a widowed hag, why can’t I? I don’t need men to live.”
Nesta’s laughter sours at the insult, and she turns to Elain with seriousness in her tone. “No one needs anyone else, Elain—but you treat loneliness like a leper from the Middle Ages. Are you even happy for me and Cassian beneath all that jealousy?”
Elain shifts uncomfortably in her chair and mutters, “Of course I’m happy for you two.” And then she adds in a much quieter voice, “Deep, deep down.”
“Is that what was wrong with you on New Year’s?” Feyre asks gently. “You were jealous?”
Nesta raises a brow; she didn’t know this.
“I wasn’t exactly having fun watching you two suck face right after getting dumped by Azriel,” Elain tells Nesta. “But that doesn’t mean I’m not happy for you. I just…I’m not used to being the lonely one.” She huffs out a sigh and reaches for the decanter again. “If anyone should be in a happy and healthy relationship right now, it should be me.”
Feyre turns to Nesta and whispers too loudly, “You’re right, she is fucking annoying.”
“Don’t get too friendly; so are you.”
Feyre leans away from Nesta in affront. “I didn’t even do anything this time!”
“You don’t need to do anything for Nesta to think she’s better than us,” Elain chimes in.
The three of them break out into bickering, which soon devolves into hysterical laughter, which then morphs into a comfortable silence—which doesn’t last long until they’re bickering again. They spend the rest of the night going in small circles like that over their whiskey, occasionally taking breaks to talk of more serious things: Elain’s flower shop is finally starting to pick up business, but expenses are still too high. Nesta is worried about Cassian being all alone in Italy by himself, but she’ll never show it to him. Feyre’s work at the children’s art studio is making her seriously consider having kids (“Don’t you dare, you’re way too young,” Nesta threatens).
Each of them reveals that they miss at least one of their shitty parents these days.
Maybe it’s because they’re under the same night sky that they spent their childhoods under, but if Nesta closes her eyes, it’s like she’s seventeen again, letting her sisters stay up and talk her ear off even though it’s a weeknight.
***
The lack of Nesta in Cassian’s bed must stop him from succumbing to deep sleep, because his nap is hazy and doesn’t last more than a half hour. When he blinks awake, the fog of wine from earlier has mostly cleared away and the lamps in his room are lit. Mor sits on the bay window seat and Azriel lounges on a chair nearby, both of them murmuring quietly to each other.
Noticing Cassian’s movement, Az turns away from Mor and drawls, “That was quick.”
Groaning, Cassian rubs at his eyes and sits up straight. His shirt and jeans are flung on the floor, and he can only assume he took them off himself before collapsing into bed.
Holding the thin blanket to his chest, he demands, “What are you guys doing here?”
“Oh, now he has modesty,” Mor grumbles.
Cassian grabs his wrinkled shirt from the floor and shrugs it on before repeating his question. “What are you doing here, and where’s Nesta?”
“Don’t know,” Az shrugs from his chair. “But Mor wanted us to talk alone, so Nesta probably doesn’t need to be here.”
Growing wary, Cassian straightens up against the headboard. “Talk about what?”
Mor’s words take him by surprise. “I wanted to apologize.” She straightens up in her seat and throws a cautious glance at Azriel. “And I wanted Az with me for moral support.”
Az rolls his eyes to himself, likely considering the task beneath him.
“I didn’t take your words that seriously this morning,” Mor goes on, “but I’m taking them seriously now. Someone made me realize that I’ve been blaming your—girlfriend... for our relationship changing when I’m the one who’s been pushing you away the whole time. While you were falling in love, I wasn’t there for you. I didn’t trust you to find love without my input, and I didn’t respect you when you did.” Tears line her dark eyes, taking Cassian aback. “I’m sorry,” she says weakly. “Please don’t hate me.”
A headache takes root in Cassian’s temples, and he has to shut his eyes against the dull thudding. “I could never hate you, Mor,” he says past the lump in his throat. That was never the problem, though her words have eased some of the pent up frustration in his chest.
Cassian lets out a long-suffering sigh. “It’s not just you. It’s every single one of us. We’ve known each other so long, we’re so fucking entangled in each other, that even when I’m living by myself up in my cabin I feel like I can’t get away from it.” He stares out the window like he might find some relief there. “That’s why I’m going overseas. To get some space from all of this.” He waves between the three of them and laughs bitterly. “We created this incestuous little circle and now we don’t know how to care about anyone outside of it.”
He catches Az frowning, fingers toying with one of the bracelets on his wrist that Cassian spied earlier.
Mor sniffs away a lingering tear. “What about Nesta, then? Where does she factor in?”
Cassian’s mouth turns down in a distasteful frown. He still doesn’t like that he has to leave without her, but the fact that he doesn’t like it is only more proof that he needs to do it. “I can’t let Nesta be a part of me,” he answers. “I need to be all of me.”
Only once he learns how to do that can he be the friend and lover that the people in his life deserve.
***
Nesta wakes up the next dawn not on a hard chair, but in a soft bed. The smell of Cassian lingers on the sheets wrapped around her, and she blinks blearily as she tries to remember the events of last night.
Feyre fell asleep first. Elain and Nesta were just going to close their eyes for a moment and take a brief rest as well, but the next thing Nesta knew Cassian was helping her take out her contacts and laying her head against a pillow. Now the sun is dawning and she has a pounding headache. She needs at least another ten hours of sleep before she’ll be fit to face the world again.
She looks around for her phone to check the time and spots it plugged into the charger on the bedside table. Despite feeling like she’s been rammed with the flu, the tiniest smile lifts Nesta’s lips at the thought of Cassian carrying her to bed and making sure to charge her phone.
She finds her lockscreen blown up with notifications, all from her shared groupchat with Gwyn and Emerie.
Clicking into her texts, Nesta scrolls back through the hundreds of messages to see what she missed.
Emerie: i can’t believe nesta isn’t here for this.
Emerie: what the hell is she doing
Gwyn: probably hanging out with her best friends the inner circle
Gwyn: or getting railed
Emerie: >:(
A tired laugh escapes Nesta as she reads the texts, and she’s grateful for the reminder that these are her chosen friends. This is her found family, and she’ll be back with them soon.
Scrolling a little further back, Nesta finds the cause of all the commotion.
Emerie: A RACCOON JUST FELL THROUGH MY CEILING IM GONMA DUE &%!@
Emerie: DIE
Followed by multiple pictures of a scarily large raccoon chewing up Emerie’s bed.
Nesta shudders at the images. Reminding herself to message the girls back as soon as she has her head on straight, she puts away the phone and drags herself out of bed.
Her knees wobble a little as she stands upright and slips her glasses on, but her body keeps moving automatically toward the door. It’s not until she’s halfway downstairs that she realizes she’s looking for Cassian.
In the main hall that cuts through the house, Nesta glances between the back door and the front door. Instinct tugs her toward the front door, and as she passes the living room she spies Elain knocked out on the couch.
One of her legs dangle off the edge of the cushion and she still has her shoes on, like she dragged herself up onto the loveseat in the middle of the night and fell straight asleep.
Cassian brought Nesta up to their room sometime during the night, and Rhysand would have done the same for Feyre, but Elain… Elain has no one to carry her to her room, Nesta realizes.
Hating the unusual feeling of pity that blooms inside of her, Nesta goes over and grabs a throw blanket from nearby. She flings it haphazardly over Elain’s body. There, that should do it.
She might take a few seconds to tuck the blanket in a little better, but then she’s out the front door and jogging down the porch steps. Early morning dew beads the grass, and the sun isn’t high enough in the sky yet for the heat to be unbearable.
Like perfect timing, Cassian’s form appears from the lightly wooded running trail that circles the lake. He has his hair tied up and is wearing nothing but workout shorts, and even from this distance Nesta can see the sweat gleaming off his hardened chest.
She forgets about her headache and the bitter aftertaste of alcohol coating her tongue. Her feet speed up on the grass, and then Cassian takes sight of her too. He grins wide and breaks into a run toward her.
When they’re mere feet away from each other, Nesta is the one to halt first and hold out a hand, blocking Cassian’s incoming bear hug. “Don’t you dare.” She eyes his body with a warning look. Nesta will do a lot of things for her boyfriend, but sticking her face into his sweaty pits is not one of them.
Cassian looks her up and down with scrutiny, trying to decide if going in for the hug anyway is worth it. “Fine,” he gives in. He spins on his heel and walks down to the head of the pier, where a standing shower is set up for washing off after swims in the lake.
Twisting the faucet, Cassian stands under the cold burst of water and gives Nesta a look that says, Happy now?
Nesta cautiously goes over to where Cassian stands, but she gets too close—
In a blink, she’s being tugged under the shower stream, held tight to Cassian’s chest.
“Cassian!” Nesta splutters, trying to pull away. Droplets hit her glasses and blur her vision, and she has to shove the glasses up into her hair so she can properly glare at Cassian’s face.
He only laughs deeply and tugs her closer. “Like you don’t smell either. You’ve been in that dress since yesterday.”
Nesta catches her breath under the pouring water, glancing down at her soaked sundress. Right; she probably needs this more than he does.
The water isn’t freezing like she expected, she realizes as she relaxes in Cassian’s arms. It’s actually the perfect temperature, almost soothing after the initial shock to her senses.
Broad hands stroke long lines across her arms, like Cassian is making sure that she isn’t uncomfortable. The action triggers an old memory inside Nesta—or rather, an old familiar feeling. The feeling of Cassian in Nesta’s early days of knowing him, always pushing her out of her comfort zone but never tossing her in the deep end to drown.
“I handled my sisters and your friends pretty well the other night, don’t you think?” she murmurs into his chest.
Cassian looks down at her with pure reverence in his eyes. “I can’t be surprised. You’ve always been like that.”
“Like what?”
“Brave as hell. From the minute you stepped outside of the little circle you’d drawn around your life, you became the bravest person I know.”
“Not true,” Nesta states matter-of-factly. “I can name at least three braver people.”
Cassian pokes her in the ribs, but his smile is good natured. “It’s just an expression, Nes. Take the compliment.”
The shower keeps spraying around them, refracting the sunlight to scatter rainbows across Nesta’s vision. “I couldn’t have done it without you,” she tells Cassian earnestly. “I did the bulk of the hard work, but you…you gave me that first push. You taught me I could find safety in others, because you were my first real friend.”
Her words clearly take Cassian by surprise. Maybe it’s because Nesta is so rarely open about her true feelings, so her words have more value when she is. Maybe Cassian just wasn’t expecting to get so much credit, which is why he blinks rapidly now. “And what now?” he tries to tease, emotion tangled in his throat. “You have better friends?”
“Much better,” Nesta plays along, but her gaze carries all her sincerity. She suddenly laughs to herself, remembering: “I was terrible at socializing.”
It’s something she brushes off easily now, but few people will ever know that part of her inability to get close to others stemmed from a debilitating fear of rejection.
“Not to me.” Cassian reaches out to twist the faucet off, leaving the two of them standing soaked in the morning air. “I loved talking to you. I couldn’t stop wanting to talk to you, even if you didn’t feel like talking back.” That was how insistent he’d been on becoming her friend, that he would open up to her even when she was closed off to him.
Nesta watches Cassian tug his hair tie off, a little dazed by how much she feels for him in this moment. She isn’t ready for when he scrubs a hand vigorously through his loose hair, shaking the dripping strands out like a dog.
“Cassian!” Nesta scolds for the second time this morning. She flinches back at the water droplets hitting her eyes, making Cassian laugh when he looks back up at her. “Sorry,” he says, not sounding sorry at all. To make up for the assault, he delicately plucks her glasses off the top of her head and uses the hem of her wet dress to wipe off the lenses as best he can.
He slides the glasses back onto her face and nods, inspecting her. “That’s better.” Then he swoops down to kiss the mole beside her mouth.
Nesta wrinkles her nose in surprise. “What’s that for?”
“It’s a thank you,” he says. “Thank you for your car breaking down in the middle of the woods, and for agreeing to spend the night at my place last September.”
Nesta’s brows raise high in amusement. “Shouldn’t you be thanking Feyre? For calling in that favor with you?”
“One day, I’ll do that too,” he promises.
Nesta bites down on a smile and shakes her head, muttering, “Ridiculous.” Yet she can’t help but wonder: who would she thank?
The universe, probably. Whatever forces made it possible for her to wake up every day in the same bed as Cassian, eating the food he cooks and accepting the unconditional love he offers.
She suddenly shivers under the rising sun, becoming aware of how just uncomfortably her sundress clings to her body. Without Cassian’s words distracting her, everything is damp and cold.
Cassian notices and slips his hand into Nesta’s, already starting to pull her away from the pier and toward the house. “Let’s get you dry,” he says. “I’ll make us pancakes before everyone else wakes up.”
“With chocolate chips?”
“With chocolate chips.”
So hand in hand, the two of them walk back up to Cherrywood House.

Tumblr media
I'm going to be making several posts about Experiment Z-57. In this first post, we'll be taking a good look at its corpse. In the next post, we'll look at the boss, and an entirely different boss will be covered after that. I'll analyze things even further in a fourth post (Edit: Five posts. I'm writing five posts). I'm going to add a little list for navigation down below and update the links as things are posted:
Dissected Creature
Experiment Z-57
Corpius
Comparisons, Part 1: Let's Talk About Legs
Comparisons, Part 2
2023 Update: extras
Metroid Dread spoilers beneath the cut.
The first time you see this thing, it's being prodded by lasers in Dairon. If you come back after the X have been released, you'll find that its corpse is missing, and that Experiment Z-57 has freed itself with a good deal of force. You need to fight it in Cataris during a story event. I was going to provide screenshots to demonstrate this, but I'll have to put that off because Tumblr only allows you to attach ten images to a single post.
Something fun to note is that the lasers are included in this creature's .bcmdl file. The textures for the lasers are not, at least in the version of the file I exported. You could probably bundle them with it using a script or a slightly different exporting method than I did. In any case, I know where the textures for these lasers are located, and I did not bother exporting them with the dissected creature. We won't even be looking at the lasers.
Onto the good stuff! I should preface this by reporting that the dead experiment is labeled "Dissected Creature" in the files. This becomes very apparent if we peer into its open chest cavity.
Tumblr media
I can't say for sure exactly what any of this mushy stuff is. This is an alien organism, so resemblance to any Earthly organs may or may not be superficial. In any case, we can see a cyan twisty tube towards the abdomen that looks like real world intestines, a pair of blue discs that form a heart-shape in their adjacent position (possibly lungs?), and above those lies a bright red bulb.
Tumblr media
Here I've flipped the creature over to get a better angle for screenshots.
Tumblr media
Here's a shot of its ribs and its right hind leg. Z-57 has six legs, with three on each side. The front legs are connected at the base of the neck, the middle legs are on top of the open ribcage, and the hind legs are located at the junction between the creature's torso and abdomen. Below, we can see the segments where each leg is connected to the torso.
Tumblr media
The front and back legs each have four toes armed with curved, bony talons, while the legs in the midsection each have one toe. Close to the body, the legs are almost purple, but their pink hue becomes more apparent in the middle of the limb. The further back you go towards the abdomen, the more orange pigmentation we can see in Experiment Z-57's legs. The front legs are almost devoid of yellow. Its legs grow darker as we get further away from the body: the hard scales on its feet are black.
Tumblr media
And this is the head. Its eyes are small and round, and its skull becomes dark and discolored the closer it gets to the flesh of its neck. The neck doesn't appear to be in good shape; this may be an indicator of how long Z-57 has been dead, but I'm also not an expert in the changes in color (and other physical traits) that occur in flesh as it decomposes, so I couldn't say for certain. Large lumps appear to have formed in scattered clusters, and its veins are quite prominent. The eyes are a dull yellow-orange.
The bottom half of its jaw is split down the middle.
Tumblr media
(It's very tempting to make comparisons between this thing and Corpius, but I'll get to that after I've expended this post's image limit.)
Tumblr media
Its back is protected by a hard, black carapace. Z-57's spine is arched. It's positioned as though it's curled up like a dead bug, and the fat abdomen paired with the six legs and the stinger makes it look kind of like a wingless wasp.
Tumblr media
Did I mention it has a stinger on the end of its abdomen?
Tumblr media
The soft underside of its abdomen is orange, and grows redder as the flesh draws closer to the shell.
That concludes the bulk of our initial exploration into Experiment Z-57's corpse. I'll write about its modifications and the differences between its corpse and its X-form later. I might have to make a fifth post just to compare and contrast corpse-57 and X-57.

Stolen Moments (Love Letters)
Word Count: 5,848 CW: Mentions of violence, cursing, hospital
Gavin opened his messages, desperate to hear some news from Nines. Instead of getting a message from Nines telling him he was fine and ready to return home, he got an automated message from the repair hospital telling him he needed to pick up his personal effects, more information in an email to follow. Gavin switched over to his email and found a large file.
He sat down at his terminal, ignoring that it was his work device and he was on the clock, and opened it to find over two hundred messages from Nines, all addressed to himself. The email itself said that Nines, as his professional partner, was mostly his responsibility and property and that Gavin was responsible for his bills and the choice to repair or replace him. He needed to come to the hospital by end of day and make the decision.
Gavin scoffed. “I guess some things still haven’t changed no matter how progressive people pretend to be.”
He reread the last line until it set in that Nines’ life was in his hands. He jolted out of his chair, the seat rolling back until it hit the side of someone else’s desk, and rushed to Fowler’s office. He threw the door open, not caring that the captain was in the middle of a meeting.
Gavin didn’t bother with preamble, getting straight to his point. “Sir, I need the day off.”
Fowler sighed, moving things around on his terminal for a bit. “You’ve got days off saved up. Go ahead.”
Gavin thanked him, rushing out the door and to the repair hospital. He just about crashed through the doors and made a beeline for the receptionist. “I’m looking for an RK900 unit who goes by the name ‘Nines’. What room is he in?”
She looked up at him, expression bored. “Serial number?”
Gavin frustratedly gave it, having memorized it long ago, and waited impatiently to be told where he was. When told, Gavin didn’t bother thanking the receptionist before he was off to see Nines. It was agonizing having to wait for the elevator, even worse having to stand in it as it went up, his fingers tapping on his leg the entire ride. His eyes scanned the room numbers, getting frantic with the thought of not getting to him in time. When he found the room he’d been told was Nines’, he went directly inside.
Nines was alone in the room. He was lying on a white bed, his chassis exposed from his toes to his neck. His head and neck were the only things that still had his skin on it, looking for all the world as if he were peacefully sleeping despite the LED that kept a steady yellow light. Gavin sighed in relief at him being there, despite the numerous injuries he still sported, and pulled a chair over to sit next to him. He held his hand and grabbed his tablet from his bag.
“Alright, tin can. What’d you send me?” He opened the large folder, looking at the abundance of files that were inside it. Turning his head to Nines, he joked, “Any idea where to start?” Sadly, Nines stayed as silent and still as before, not a word to be spoken.
Gavin kissed the back of his hand, running his thumb over a crack in the plating. He turned his attention back to the tablet and scrolled down through the file names. Each one had a series of numbers as a name, something Gavin quickly figured out was a date. Scrolling through them, they were in chronological order. He only found it fitting to open the first one and go from there, wondering what they could be.
Detective,
The other day, we were talking on a stake out. I mentioned there being more to admire about you than to detest and have just now realized the error of not continuing that thought. I admire your work ethic, the way you have a single-minded drive to complete the case assigned to us. I appreciate how gentle you are with victims and those you like. You may not notice it but care is in every word you speak and every action you make for those you genuinely consider to be loved ones and the few victims we’ve spoken to. I’ve noticed your actions softening toward me, even as your words stay as harsh as they’ve ever been. I might be wrong, but it seems you’ve come to care for me yet wish to continue our ribbing as something more friendly. If this is your way of extending an olive branch, I am more than willing to accept it and will continue to banter with you.
Gavin smiled as he looked back at Nines. “Thank you so much for understanding me, you barely held together stack of rust and bolts.”
A voice laughed but it wasn’t Nines’. Instead, Gavin’s attention was drawn to the doorway where someone in a white lab coat, a small pin on the lapel reading ‘they/them’, stood. “I see you arrived.”
Gavin stood, laying the tablet on the bed but not letting go of Nines’ hand. “Who do I have to tell that this man is a person who deserves every right to live and fight as anyone else?”
They laughed again, coming inside the room to lean against a wall. “That would be me. I’m Ash Windlock, head of Simon Repair Hospital. I apologize if the message made it seem more urgent than it truly is.”
Gavin clenched his jaw, having to force himself to take even breaths. “What’s Nines’ condition?”
“I’m not going to lie. He’s in some pretty bad shape. We can only repair the body, not the coding and neural pathways he developed by being deviant. Right now, our best team is gathering to do a surgery, as repairs have taken to being called, as soon as we can. I’ll update you when that happens.”
Gavin’s hand held Nines’ just a bit tighter. “How well do you expect that to go? What do you mean, you can’t repair his code?”
“The surgery is expected to be a full success. When an android becomes deviant, their code changes in ways the programmers weren’t equipped to handle. It would take too long for them to learn the new coding that is specific to every android just to be able to repair them without fear of damaging the new coding and, thus, the deviant. Even if that were possible, RK900s are extremely rare in this part of the world, not many having been found and awoken. So, it’d take even longer to figure out his specific neural paths. That’s time we don’t have. So, while we can do everything in our power to repair his chassis and wiring, we can’t do anything about his mind palace unless he does something about it himself. He went into low power mode when he was damaged and we don’t know if he’ll come out of it after the surgery.”
Gavin nodded, struggling to process the amount of information that was just pushed onto him. “Okay, yeah, I’ll sign whatever permission waver you need me to when it comes to the surgery as I’m closest to next of kin while Connor is out of town. Just, charge the bill to the DPD, he’s under their employ.” Connor should be back by that afternoon but they didn’t need to know that.
They nodded. “I’ll be back in a moment with the paperwork for next of kin.”
Gavin sat back down, fidgeting with Nines’ fingers as he usually did when nervous. “While we wait,” he spoke to Nines, hoping it was like a coma where he could still hear him, “how about I look at another one of your files?”
This one was a video, a few days after the writing. It didn’t seem like much, just a video of Gavin flipping through some files while he worked. There were captions on it, little things being picked out. Gavin's bouncing leg, how his dominant hand was tapping a tablet pen against his fingertips and knuckles, the half full cup of coffee that Gavin had sitting on his desk, the mess of a desk that he knew like the back of his hand. Other things were noticed too, the way Gavin’s brow was furrowed as he concentrated, the clump of hair that’d fallen over his forehead, his nose wrinkling, the slight redness on his fingers from the repeated tapping of the pen, even the creases of his jacket were picked out as important. The video couldn’t have been more than two minutes of Gavin working but it said a lot about what Nines thought about him at that time.
Gavin looked back up at Nines, lying so still on the bed he would have looked dead to anyone else. “Did you really have a crush on me back then, toaster?” His voice was light and teasing. He wanted Nines to be awake, to tell him to stop with the android jokes, to tell him Gavin had been crushing long since Nines had, to tell him all sorts of things.
A video. Gavin walked down the stairs, Nines staring up at him. Suddenly the scene paused and became monochromatic, as a white outline of Gavin reached the bottom of the stairs, a grey outline of Nines leaned forward to kiss his cheek. The outlines reversed until the white outline matched with Gavin again and the scene unfroze, the world filling with color. Gavin passed Nines and the android turned to follow.
Another one, edited to follow that. Gavin sat at his desk. The world paused and faded again as a grey outline of Nines approached with a coffee cup, kissing the top of Gavin’s head and placing the cup on the desk before leaning into him and running his fingers through his hair. The images reversed and instead Nines simply handed him the cup, Gavin giving a brief, “Thanks.”
Three more scenes similar to those followed in sequence, where the grey outline tried to interact in a romantic way with the white outline before Nines inevitably didn’t act on those thoughts.
Gavin sat and stared at Nines, his grip on Nines hand tightening just the slightest bit. “You should have told me sooner, dumbass.” His voice was soft, softer than he ever spoke to anyone besides Nines.
Windlock came back in with a tablet that Gavin had to fill out. Other repairs Nines had previously had, if he knew who did those, if he knew who originally built him, signing a bunch of things that came with medical power of attorney. When he handed the tablet back, he was told they’d operate in a half hour.
Another video. This one was different, footage of a garden. Gravel crunched under footsteps and animals were heard but not seen, water. Nines stopped by a pond and glanced down, brushing a stray strand of hair back into place. His shirt had a simpler collar than normal and was a lighter shade of black. He leaned back, continuing on the path. Images of Gavin appeared along it, some sitting on benches doing random actions, others walking beside Nines for short periods of time. One of them came up to Nines and started talking about the case at the time, Nines participating in the conversation.
Gavin looked from the tablet to stare at Nines. “Were you dreaming about me?” His voice was quiet, bewildered yet flattered.
The next ten files were similar things, Nines’ dreams about Gavin and videos of Gavin doing mundane tasks that wouldn’t be considered special in any way. At least, none that Gavin could tell. As far as he was concerned, the videos of himself that had been overanalyzed were sweet but he didn’t understand why Nines kept them.
Soon enough, a group of people came in and took Nines away to the operating room. Gavin was allowed to stay in the hospital room but was warned the operation would last several hours. He reluctantly put down the files Nines had addressed to him, files he was quickly realizing were simply labeled with his name and may have been misinterpreted as for him when they were just about him, and pulled out a book instead. He tried to lose himself in a plot line but was too anxious to do so.
Calling Tina got him nowhere, her phone off while she was on patrol. He’d taken the day off to be with Nines so wasn’t technically allowed to work on case files. Besides, nothing felt the same without Nines being there to help him. So, he reluctantly pulled up the files again and selected the next one, a video. There seemed to be a lot of those.
Gavin smiled as Nines approached, coming to stand next to him on his balcony. They were quiet for a moment, both looking out at the city. Nines looked at Gavin, his sensors again cataloguing small things about his appearance. “I need to tell you something.”
Gavin looked at him, eyes trusting. “Shoot.”
Nines’ eyes shut briefly before he looked at Gavin again. “I’ve developed feelings for you.”
Gavin blinked, his posture changing from relaxed to attentive. “Okay, that’s something.” He took a deep breath, letting it out with a laugh. “I guess it’s ironic, you telling me that just as I realize something about myself.”
Nines head tilted to the side. “What would that be, Detective?”
“I’ve, somehow, also developed feelings for you.” He shook his head. “I dunno how I’ve done it, but I’ve come to really care for you.”
Nines took a step forward, towards Gavin. “What does this mean for us?”
Gavin shrugged, looking up at him. “What do you want it to mean?”
Nines leaned down. “I would enthusiastically pursue a romantic relationship with you if you say you would like that.”
Gavin smiled, leaning up to kiss his cheek before heading inside. “I wouldn’t say no,” was tossed over his shoulder.
In the top right corner of the screen, Gavin’s name came up highlighted in blue. Under it, highlighted in white, the word ‘companion’ changed to ‘lover’. Nines followed Gavin inside.
Gavin didn’t realize he was crying until a tear dripped onto the screen and he frantically pulled his sleeve over his hand to wipe it away. “Damn android,” he muttered, not truly angry with him.
They were slow dancing. Gavin’s head rested on Nines’ shoulder, one hand placed on his other shoulder while Nines had a hand on his waist, their other hands clasped together. A small pop up in the corner of the video identified the song as Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis. They were turning in a slow circle as the notes played. It was a peaceful moment until Princess walked into the room, screaming for food, and the charm was broken with laughter. Nines pulled Gavin into a kiss briefly before Gavin went to feed the cat.
Gavin took a deep breath. He remembered that night, remembered the hard day before it and the cuddles on the couch afterwards. He’d never been able to remember what song they’d been dancing to, it blurring into just another generic love song at the time. He wondered if they’d ever get the opportunity to dance to it again.
Gavin,
Every day, my soul rejoices in being able to see you, to wake up to you being there with me. I want it all. I want the quiet domesticity that comes with waking near you, that comes with you making breakfast while I feed Princess. I love being able to get ready for work with you, even if that means we end up discussing the cases in the shower and while you shave. I love being able to work with you, to have you as both my work and personal partner. I enjoy getting you coffee as you look over the case files, to make sure the desk is still in the organized chaos you left it in, your files and trinkets spilling over onto my pristine desk. I probably enjoy that more than most would think I do. However, I love watching you from afar as I wait for the coffee, watching the way you sit and interact with your environment, how you hold yourself while you read.
There’s a hidden beauty in the way people do things when they don’t think others are watching, the little mannerisms they pick up that are just for themselves and are all their own. I’m so glad you’ve let me into your life enough to feel comfortable showing me those and I hope that I never betray that trust.
I love being able to drive home with you, to relax after a long day and curl up with you. I relish the fact that you will fall asleep in my arms, that you trust me enough to keep you safe while you’re unaware of the world around you. I love being able to have you fall asleep on the couch and trust me to carry you to the bed, the ability to fall asleep beside you.
Gavin, darling, I don’t know what I’d do without you in my life. You’ve been a driving force for me, a guiding light. Whether you realize it or not, you’ve influenced so many of my choices. Thank you, dear, for helping me find life in deviancy, for helping me find love in turmoil.
Gavin wiped a tear from his eye, vision turning blurry. Nines didn’t usually use pet names for him, sticking to ‘Gavin’ and ‘Detective’ to the point that the latter felt like an endearment. It felt nice to see the endearments from him. He really hoped Nines would pull through and be okay. He couldn’t imagine living life without him at this point, he relied on him so much. He shifted in his seat, trying to get a bit more comfortable, before clicking on the next file.
A video. This was a memory that Gavin could fill in the smaller details for.
Nines was on his back on the couch. Gavin was laying on top of him, arms curled around Nines’ sides. His head rested on Nines chest, their legs entangled, while Nines’ hands carded through Gavin’s hair and over his back. They were watching an old rerun of some cop show that not even Nines bothered remembering. Nines’ shifted, kissing the top of Gavin’s head. He hummed, holding a constant note for longer than a human could.
Gavin looked up at him, chin resting on Nines’ chest. “Why do you do that?”
“Do what? Kiss you?” He chuckled. “Because I like to.”
Gavin smiled but pressed his hand to Nines’ side. “No. The humming thing. It sounds like a cross between a cat purring and the whirring of a fan. Are you okay?”
Nines nodded, smiling. “It’s kind of like a cat’s purr too in that I only do it when I’m content and safe. It’s also a way of doing a self-diagnostic of my systems as it tests both vocal modulator and fans.”
Gavin leaned forward to peck Nines on the lips before laying his head back on his chest.
Gavin sniffled, wiping a tear from his cheek. He hoped to get the opportunity to lay with him like that again soon. He believed Nines was going to pull through this, that he was going to get through the surgery fine and that he was going to come back to him. He had to.
“Detective.”
That sounded so much like Nines that his name was halfway out of Gavin’s mouth before he realized it was Connor, not Nines, that was standing in the hallway with his hands behind his back. “Oh. It’s just you. What do you want?” His voice was flat, none of his usual bite left.
Connor smiled, taking a step into the room, closing the door behind him. “Officer Chen overheard some of your conversation with Fowler and logged into your computer to gather information. She sent that information to me and I just now arrived to do anything with it. Scans indicate that you haven’t eaten in the past twelve hours. I suggest we deal with that first. What do you wanna eat?” His LED swirled yellow as he probably pulled up a list of nearby restaurants.
Gavin sighed, feeling the exhaustion of the day kick in. “At this point, you can pick. Give me whatever you think is best. Just! No fish, and no zucchini.”
Connor tilted his head. “That’s not in any medical files you have available. Am I correct in assuming that’s personal preference?”
Gavin nodded. “Can’t stand the texture of either of ‘em.” As he fully tuned into the real world, he pulled his shoulders back and grimaced at the sounds of all the machines and the buzzing of the lights.
“Okay, there’s a Chinese restaurant nearby that has some meals that look good. What do you want from there?”
“Uhh, sweet and sour chicken with noodles.”
Connor nodded. “I’ll go get that for you. In the meantime, how is my brother?”
Gavin filled him in on the details before Connor went to grab the take out for him. While he waited for his food, he opened the next file, another letter. This one was small, as if it were hastily written. From the date and what Gavin remembered, it was from a time where they’d been covering a case with a lot of violence and they’d been split. The letter reflected Nines’ frazzled emotions during that time as it wished Gavin good health and it was a small goodbye if Nines didn’t make it. Gavin was glad he had.
Another round of videos detailing Gavin doing mundane things followed the letter, many of the scenes now domestic as well as professional.
Connor came back and put the bag near Gavin. “Did you need me to stay? Tina only told me to check on you, not stay with you. If you want me to go, I will.”
Gavin thought about it. A year ago, he would have snapped for Connor to leave instantly, not seeing him as anything but a machine with nothing to offer. Now, he knew Connor was alive and actually trying to reach out. Gavin let a reluctant smile drag a corner of his mouth up. “You can stay, if you want. I’m not sure if you’ve got the time for it but you’re more than welcome.”
Connor smiled, gracefully sinking to sit on the floor. “I cleared my schedule to be at your disposal.”
Gavin groaned, letting his head roll back. “Am I that bad?”
Connor shrugged. “Hank was taking the rest of the day off already so it’s only natural for me to as well. Besides, Nines is kind of like my little brother. I want to be here.”
Gavin took a deep breath and nodded. “Okay.”
They sat in silence for a few minutes before Gavin picked up the tablet again and looked at the next file.
Gavin,
Happy first anniversary. I don’t know if you expected us to last this long but I’m grateful we have. I’m grateful for every second I get to spend with you. I don’t know where I would be right now if I hadn’t met you, if we hadn’t been partnered. I’m so glad I have you as both the best detective partner I could ask for and a most amazing lover. It warms my soul every time you forget I’m not human, especially when it’s tacked on to an android joke. Those instances make me know you care so deeply for me and love every part of me.
You taught me to take life slowly, to savor what I have. That sentiment has been applied to every part of my life. I savor stakeouts, holding you in my arms, feeding Princess, even doing paperwork and being on the hunt. They are all good to me simply because they are part of my life and because you are there.
I don’t know what life would be like without you. I’m so used to you being with me every step of the way.
Gavin looked up as footsteps approached the room, hoping it was Windlock with news on Nines. The feet passed the room, the person casting a shadow across the frosted glass of the door, and kept on their way.
A video. Nines was sitting on the couch, reading, when Gavin’s voice called from the bedroom. Nines’ HUD measured the level of distress in his voice as high and he went to investigate.
Gavin had torn the bedroom apart, a pile of things on the bed. Nines scanned him, noting the disheveled appearance and lack of caffeine along with his elevated stress signals. “What’s wrong, Gavin?”
Gavin turned to him, tears in his eyes. “I can’t find something I need and today’s been bad enough.”
Nines nodded. Gavin’s unmedicated ADHD could be a lot to deal with after a long day. He stepped forward, pulling Gavin into a hug, his hands rubbing soothing circles along his back. “What do you need me to do?”
Gavin sighed, melting into the contact and stability that came with the hug. “Could you scan the room for my tablet pen?”
“Of course.” Nines moved his head and time froze, going down to grey and white. He located the pen easily enough, it’s black shape standing out starkly. He chuckled and released Gavin to pick it up. “It was right beside your tumbler.”
Gavin took it, wiping the tears from his cheeks. “Sorry for making such a fuss over something so small.”
Nines reached out, his hand cradling Gavin’s cheek and thumbing at his tears. “Nothing is too big nor too small for me to help you. I understand your stress and I know the way you get. I’m perfectly content to help you find something right in front of your nose.” To punctuate the statement, he leaned forward to kiss Gavin’s scar.
Gavin wiped a tear from his eye. “Come back to me soon, tin can.”
Connor looked at him. “Did you say something, Detective?”
Gavin shook his head. “No, nothing.”
The door opened and Windlock came in. “Detective Reed, the surgery is complete.”
Gavin sat forward in his chair, resisting the urge to pace. “How did it go? Is he online yet?”
They shook their head. “Unfortunately, his neural network is still non-functioning. However, the surgery was a success. His chassis is intact and functioning again, every bicomponent in its place. His skin isn’t on as he’s not online to do that. Would you like to see him?”
Gavin stood, gathering his things. “Yes, please.”
Connor stood and approached Windlock. “Is there anything more you can tell us about his status? Have you at least figured out why he isn’t online yet?”
They shrugged. “I’m as in the dark as you are, RK800. Any insight you can spare would be helpful.”
“Okay, I’m ready.” Gavin slung his bag over his shoulder. “Lead us to him, please.”
Nines was almost the same way as how he’d left Gavin three hours ago. His skin was retracted below the neck, letting the white plating show, and he was lying so peacefully that for a moment Gavin almost thought he was just sleeping. Gavin walked over to the chair closest to the bed and sat down hard, leaning forward to take Nines’ hand. “I’m here, toaster. I’m right here.”
Connor placed a hand on his shoulder and Gavin was distantly aware of him asking for Windlock to leave them be. Gavin’s entire focus was on Nines even as he knew there were only a few more files in the folder to get through.
He held onto Nines’ hand with one of his own, letting his partner know that he was there and wasn’t going anywhere, and pulled the tablet from the bag by his feet.
The next file was a series of pictures. It seemed Nines was sentimental in that regard. All the way from first meeting up until just a night ago, they were pictures of Gavin doing various things. It started as just Gavin doing work at his desk, moving to crime scenes and the break room. Photos of him doing mundane tasks and midchase. The time stamps moved past their getting together and the pictures became more domestic. Gavin waking in Nines’ arms, sleeping on the couch, Princess coming home for the first time. He’d documented her entire growth process from stray kitten to spoiled adult.
Gavin smiled at Nines. “You really do have a soft spot for that cat, don’t you? Maybe it’s about time we get her a playmate.”
“I’ll leave you two be for a moment. I need to speak with someone.” Connor slipped out of the room.
Gavin opened the next file, shifting to sit beside Nines on the bed now that Connor was gone.
A video. Gavin was cooking breakfast as Nines fed Princess, their usual routine. Nines came up beside Gavin, kissing him on the cheek. “How’s the bacon coming along?”
“Pretty much done.”
“Good.” Nines turned the burner off and took the spatula from Gavin’s hand. Somewhere, music started to play and Gavin chuckled as Nines pulled him into a dance. It was sweet and short before Gavin was released to finish making his breakfast.
Gavin smiled, recognizing that morning from only a few days before the incident. He gripped Nines hand just a bit tighter as he clicked on the last file.
The last video. Nines was standing on a roof. Gavin was down on the ground, watching out for their suspect. “Hello down there.” He muttered to himself, not loud enough to carry.
He stepped away from the edge, pacing the length of the roof. “Is it weird to think that I’m bored? I’m an android with the internet at my fingertips, I should be able to wait for a few minutes.” He sighed. “I guess that’s the trouble with living and working so closely to you, time is meaningless and a minute is too long for you.” He chuckled. “You’re so used to moving so fast that slowing down is a difficult task for you. That’s okay, though. I like it that way.”
The door to the roof burst open and Nines sprang into action, launching himself into a fight with their suspect. They grappled for a moment, both trying to pin the other and get a better grip. In the end, Nines backed them toward the edge.
“I now know,” he was still muttering. “No matter how much time has passed, no matter how much time will pass, you truly are the love of my life. This is why . . . I’m doing this.” He took a final step backward, diving off the roof and taking their suspect with him.
Gavin sat in shock as the video ended, almost waiting for it to finish or replay or do anything but leave him there with that information and the knowledge of why Nines had been damaged almost to the point of no repair.
He looked to Nines, laying so still on the bed. “Why? Why’d you feel the need to do that?!” He released Nines’ hand to stand. “There could have been some other way! You could have called me! You could have used lethal methods!” He hit Nines’ chest with a fist too weak to do any damage to a human. “You don’t need to sacrifice your-damn-self just because you feel like it!” He knew he was shouting but he didn’t care.
A hand touched his arm and Gavin jolted to look at Nines. His eyes were open and his hand was hovering in the air. “I knew you would catch me.” His voice was weak and full of static but Gavin was so happy to hear him he cried, tears spilling down his cheeks.
Laying down, Gavin threw his arms around Nines. They lay there for what felt like an eternity and an instant, simply holding each other and comforting themselves that the other was alive and safe. Nines ran a hand up Gavin’s back, cupped the back of his neck, then began to softly card through his hair. His free arm curled around Gavin and pulled him close, holding him and feeling him and making sure he was real. Gavin pulled one arm down, curling it by his side and grounding himself by grabbing a fistful of the bedsheets, and let the other rest over Nines’ torso and had the hand sit on the white chassis of Nines’ shoulder.
“Did you look through the folder?” Nines’ voice broke the silence, not filled with as much static as before.
Gavin nodded, turning his head to look at the tablet resting innocently on a nearby table. “I watched, read, and looked at every single file in that folder while wondering if it would ever be added to again.”
Nines pressed a kiss to his neck. “I’m sorry, Gavin. I should have warned you or tried a different path.”
Gavin shrugged and turned back to rest his head on Nines’ shoulder. “I’m just glad you’re safe.” He paused for a moment. “The engineers said they could repair your body but your mind was too damaged for them to do anything with.”
Nines’ head rested against Gavin’s, his hand never slowing in Gavin’s hair. “I know. I heard bits and pieces of it, especially toward the end of the surgery and just now in the room. While they were spending all that time fixing my chassis and biocomponents, I was working on my coding.”
Gavin laughed, his jubilance at Nines being okay bubbling up. “An AI that fixes its own code, would you fucking look at that!”
Nines chuckled. “The irony isn’t lost on me, Detective. However, it’s simply the world we are living in where an android is capable of modifying their own code. Still, it was hard and taxing work to rebuild my own functions line by line. I shall be back to myself in no time at all, I assure you.”
A knock at the door caused them to abandon their conversation. Gavin turned onto his back to better see who came in before calling for them to enter. Connor stuck his head in, eyes lighting up at the sight of Nines. “You’re awake! I’ll go get Windlock, you two stay put!” He shut the door and left them with the sound of his fading footsteps.
Nines let his head fall back against Gavin’s and his hand hold Gavin’s, interlacing their fingers. “Who did he go get?”
Gavin did his best to explain as he sat up, cradling Nines against him. Connor came back with Windlock, who gave Nines a clean bill of health and said he was free to be discharged. Gavin ran home and got him some clothes as Connor dealt with the paperwork.
That night, Nines recorded another instance of Gavin falling asleep and marveled at just how lucky he was.

it was a pleasure to burn (spencer reid x fem bau!reader)
Tumblr media
genre: fluff i think even though the name is v angsty LOL it’s a literal screenplay with the amout of dialogue i wrote LMAO so idk
summary: a particularly rough and disturbing case gets to reader, and spencer and reader are brought together by this.
words: just about 6k (my longest fic ahhHH)
warnings: typical criminal minds gore and violence just up a notch, they get on a plane at the end, somebody gets ~shot~, somebody gets ~bonked~, cursing, mentions of reid’s addiction, and i think that’s it. also the reader wears reading glasses but that’s the only predetermined factor of appearance. btw i don’t think i used any pronouns in this but i apologize if i’m wrong.
a/n: LMFAO i was outside awhile ago celebrating litha with a nice lil hike and i saw a butterfly and i had just started watching cm and was like hMMm... killer who’s obsessed with symmetry??!1??!? y Es. enjoy 😼 EDIT: THERE IS SO MANY PLOT HOLES OMG FBREHJBFHEJFRE IM RBFBRE
🂦∙🂦∙🂦
Present Day, Central Park, New York
“Aren’t they just stunning?” The unsub spoke, keeping her eyes trained on the butterfly sitting happily on her finger. The brightly colored creature fluttered off her hand that was dripping scarlet, flying around her curly head of brown hair. Her, formerly white, blood-stained dress flowed around her as she followed it, watching in awe as it soared about. She giggled, plopping down on the grass in the middle of a circle of her victim’s pale, lifeless bodies, all of them with ironically morbid butterflies resting upon the frail skin of the corpses.
“Aren’t they, agents?”
She slanted her green eyes, gripping the grass a little harder. I flicked my tongue over my lips nervously, looking over to the lanky man on my left. He simply shrugged, just about as sure of how to handle the situation just as much as I was.
“If I knew you all were coming, I would have cleaned up, I really would have, I promise.”
We slowly walked towards her, twigs and leaves crunching under our feet. It could have been comparable to a hunter stalking its prey, but it unfortunately was quite the opposite.
6 days earlier, Quantico, Virginia
“3 bodies, all found within the last 48 hours in rural New York. So far, the first body has revealed that although it was dumped upstate, the victim was murdered in the city, and the same most likely goes for the other bodies as well. Nails well manicured, no drugs in the system. They aren't junkies, we’re dealing with upper class citizens.”
My face contorted as I took the photos from Reid’s hands, his large and tanned one surprising me by how soft it felt as it accidentally brushed against mine. I blushed like a madman, looking to see him doing the same thing. I cleared my throat getting Rossi’s attention.
“Why are we only now hearing of this?” I questioned, flipping through the images as I did so, my confusion only growing. I didn’t recieve an answer, leaving my curiosity to bloom.
“Wait, how did you say they were killed again?”
Morgan looked up, taking the photos from me. “He didn’t.”
I sighed, pushing my glasses up on my nose.
“Is there at least any correlation between the bodies and the butterflies?”
Our attention was shifted to JJ, the resident expert on the insects.
“Actually, the ones being found with the bodies are from the Amarynthis family, all native to Latin America. They weren’t there by accident so yes, they’re somehow related.”
Rossi stood up, grabbing his coat.
“Well, none of this is nearly enough for a profile, so pack your bags and tell the others, wheels up in an hour. We’re headed to New York.”
4 days earlier, F.B.I. Field Office, New York, New York
“The final report from the latest victim is in, all the autopsies are clean. They show no signs of struggles, no marks, no blood, no anything. The eyes weren’t bloodshot, so suffocation is ruled out, and that was our best bet.”
I sighed, sliding the case file across the glass table to Spence as I took my seat, sinking into it and allowing myself to be consumed by its warmth.
“So what your saying is that we’re back at square one.”
I looked up at Hotch from where I sat, running my hand through my ponytail.
“Yeah. That’s what I’m saying.”
Just then, the young Doctor spoke up as he flipped through the pages.
“The eyes weren’t just not bloodshot, there was barely any blood left in any of the victims bodies, only about 3% of the volume left. The killer drained them.”
Morgan gave me a shocked expression, silently asking for an explanation.
“Which you failed to mention, Y/n.” Aaron spoke, agitation once again present in his voice.
I looked at the ceiling, crossing my arms in front of me before turning to face Hotch once more.
“Yeah, well, I thought it was obvious when I said no blood.” I stuttered out cautiously.
“On the bodies! Not in the bodies!” Morgan exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air in what was in my opinion, very childish. Everyone else in the room aside from Spencer was either shaking their heads or pinching the bridge of their noses, and reasonably so.
“Look, I’m sorry I just didn’t see it in the report, plus, In the scheme of things, it just doesn’t seem to matter.”
I soon regretted my words, realizing how ill-fit they were for the current conversation I was having. Spencer looked up, tilting his head.
“Doesn’t seem to matter? How? There’s an endless amount of possibilities now that we know this. If we had known it sooner we probably could have figured out the pattern and caught the one doing this!” He harshly spewed, his voice acting like a crescendo of sorts, quiet and calm and moving towards a loud and violent tone. Tears began to prick at the corners of my eyes and I was starting to feel guilty, not to mention absolutely stupid as could be.
“I’m- I really am sorry guys, truly.”
Hotch locked eyes with me, taking a stern tone that one would usually take with a disobedient child, perhaps even Jack.
“I hope that’s a comfort to you when another body shows up. That’s their blood on your hands.”
I was frozen, the gravity of the situation taking its toll.
In the background I heard him say something to Morgan about a new profile having to be made as there were many new things to be known from this revelation. But it all went in one ear and out the other, just unpleasant white noise.
As I clumsily stumbled out of the room, I felt Reid’s eyes burning holes into the back of my brain. I was quick to turn my head to meet his glance, causing him to look down. I felt bad, the weight on my chest growing heavier from the interaction.
I sat down at my desk, turning on my computer and immediately going to google. I typed in “hypnosis” and let the info trickle in.
About 30 minutes later, I still felt absolutely horrible, but I had also put together a valuable profile in the time that had passed. I shut the newly finished file, blowing an abandoned strand of hair out from my eyes. I had to do a double take when I saw Spencer staring once more, his deep hazel eyes meeting my own. I gave him a small smile before standing up and walking to Hotch’s makeshift New York office. I pushed open the heavy door, placing the folder on his too-clean desk.
“What’s this?” He asked, taking it in his hands.
“My theory about the unsub. I think I know what she’s been doing. You can tell the team if you want, I’m not sure if they would wanna hear it from me. ”
He gave a small smile, pushing the file back over to me.
“You get the team together and I’ll get the local PD caught up. You tell them yourself.”
A few minutes later, everyone except for Reid had gathered in the meeting room. I peeked through the half closed blinds that allowed a line of vision to his desk in an attempt to locate him. He was positioned there, staring blankly at his laptop that appeared to have nothing on the screen. I knocked on the window lightly to catch his attention, his glazed over eyes looking in my direction. I tilted my head at him, silently beckoning him to join me. He only shook his in response, shaggy brown locks swaying back and forth. I sighed, frowning at his action. I turned to the group, clasping my hands in front of me.
“Everyone, this will just be a second if you’ll excuse me.”
With a raised eyebrow from Hotchner and a jab in the direction of Spencer’s workspace, I swiftly walked out of the crowded room.
“Spence, care to join us?” I asked, resting one of my hands against my hip, the other on his orderly desk.
“No, I don’t think I will. I need to try to figure this out before she finds her next victim.”
“What makes you think the unsub is a she?” I searched his eyes that had seemingly become brighter at my piqued interest in his hypothesis.
“Well, the unsub seems to be obsessed with symmetry, all the bodies being found in obscure yet symmetrical positions. This could suggest she had some sort of deep rooted insecurity, possibly from some sort of bullying from growing up in a small town where she was looked at as a superior for subpar looks. She moved to the big city, expecting a big break. Instead she was shunned for being less than average. She grew frustrated and as a result, she began her killing spree. The stresser could have been one too many insults that made her snap. Plus, that would account for the butterflies left on the scenes that are used in modern examples of both femininity and symmetry.”
I smiled widely at his words.
“What- why are you smiling, what are you smiling at?”
I tapped his desk, rolling my bottom lip between my teeth. I headed back towards the conference room, looking over my shoulder.
“Because, I’m glad we’re on the same page, Dr.”
——————
“So, our girl, as Dr. Reid has explained to us, is obsessed with her appearance. She’s an organized killer, no mistakes and no signs of blood or anything of the sort on scene. She has practice, she does this sort of thing every day. She is most likely in the age group of 23-30, and has a job in the cosmetic industry, our guess is in plastic surgery. She probably volunteers weekends at local butterfly sanctuaries or zoos, finding comfort in their perfection that those in her life, or formerly in her life, cannot and could not provide.”
“Which would explain to her easy access to non-native species of the insects. She has an absolute infatuation with symmetry, which yet again, links the butterflies on the crime scene to her MO.”
Spencer and I were vividly explaining our shared theory to the team, as well as local law enforcement. He was excited by his discovery and the lead on the killer, and his energy was contagious.
“She kills without remorse and out of jealousy, picking victims who all have one thing in common.”
Spence pointed to all of the images pasted on the board in the center of the room, all of them split in half and reflected, creating a perfect mirrored portrait.
“They all have perfectly symmetrical faces, as well as strong jawlines and high cheekbones. As most of these victims are models or those searching to start a modeling career, we believe she is luring them in with a photographer trope, promising to make their dreams come true.”
I nodded, taking a moment to study Reid’s own sharp yet somehow soft features. I allowed my eyes to wander over his sunken in, kind, and curious eyes; his pillowy pink lips that are in dire need of some chapstick.
“Agent?”
I turned my head, snapped back to reality by Rossi calling my name.
I gave a tight and quick smile, returning to the topic at hand and tactics to catch the unsub. But of course not before Emily gave me a crooked smile, resulting in me rolling my eyes.
“Physically, she’s nothing special, most likely a mundane appearance or one with quite obvious surgical changes. No in between. Check all of the plastic surgeon offices in the area for both employees who fit our description, as well as a patient who has gotten any serious facial mod operations. Do the same for any weekend volunteers at local zoos and animal sanctuaries, specifically working with any insects.”
It was an NYPD officer then that spoke up this time, raising her hand briefly.
“But, you still haven’t mentioned how she’s killing them?”
“Hypnosis.” Reid and I both spoke at the same time. He looked to his black Converse, sliding his hands into his pockets. I observed the room and all of the skeptical faces filling it.
“Even if it may sound far fetched, we saw no signs of anything that indicated a struggle or even any marks or wounds. This led us to believe that some form of hypnosis was used to allow her an easy kill. This means extra caution will have to be taken when actually handling the unsub. Even though we’re positive she’s using hypnosis, which method she is using to actually kill them after the fact is what we’re unsure of.”
I turned to Spencer, handing off the explanation to him.
“We think that because of her whole thing with symmetry, she wouldn’t want to disturb the natural state of the victims and their faces, even if she would do the same to her own.”
“Which means?” JJ asked, her blue eyes slanted and glossed lips left ajar.
“It means that the unsub wouldn’t want to leave any large marks like stab or gunshot wounds.” I nodded at Prentiss, who had made the assumption, confirming she was correct.
“With her presumed background in plastic surgery, we believe she was able to make small incisions that made no visible scars. We’re having the coroner look back over the bodies as we speak.”
“She drains the body’s blood 97% of the way before closing the holes up. What she does with the blood, we don’t know. Another Eddie Mays, perhaps.”
I looked over to Spencer, raising my brows at his comparison. He was quick to defend himself, shaking his hands left to right and mouthing “No” while simultaneously shaking his head the same way, something he seemed to be doing often as of late.
After we had finished consulting with any officers who had remaining questions, we branched off to conduct our own routine investigations. We found that the only thing they all had in common apart from the symmetrical faces, is that they all had visited the Central Park Zoo in the 24 hours before they were killed. We received a phone call from Garcia not long after we put together those pieces, being alerted that there was one girl who had, in her words, “Hit every mark there was to hit, sunshine.”
“Her name is Alessia Copelas, she works weekdays as a surgeon's assistant at Premier Cosmetic, and weekends at Central Park Zoo from 4-8 p.m.”
I smiled at the new info from the blonde bombshell known as Penelope, turning to Reid who was still looking at me quizzically.
“Alright, thanks babes, you’re the best.” I spoke into the phone, a comical “Mwah!” made from either side as we hung up.
He shook his head, keeping the odd look on his face.
“I swear, you guys have a weirder relationship than her and Morgan.”
I laughed, sliding my phone into my back pocket.
“Oh, please, Spence.” I gingerly placed a hand on his cheek, patting it twice.
“You’re just jealous.” I made a pouty face, letting my hand linger before walking off. “Come on, we’re going on a field trip.”
“Where to?” He asked, gripping the door frame, using it as leverage to swing himself closer to me. He took long and quick strides, catching up to me in no time.
“You like animals, right?”
———————
4 Days Earlier, Central Park Zoo, New York
As soon as we entered the zoo, our ears were filled with the sounds of the loud screeches of birds and monkeys alike. Reid covered his ears, cringing and making his displeasure known with an “Ahh!”
I smiled at his geeky behavior, admiring the animals in the enclosures. I paid special attention to a particularly impressive species of tarantula, leaning down to admire them. A few moments later I looked to my left and saw Spencer doing the same thing.
“Did you know that arachnids have asthma which is why they don’t run for extended periods of time, similarly to cheetahs?”
“Yes I did.”
His face scrunched up in an adorable manner, causing an involuntary giggle to fall past my lips.
“Well did you know that-“
“Ma’am?”
I turned to see a young woman with flaming red hair and a freckled face smiling at me, her green collared uniform top complimenting her eyes of a different shade wonderfully.
“Oh, hi, I’m Agent Y/l/n and this is Dr. Reid, we’re with the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI.”
Her expression shifted to a more confused one, her smile not leaving her face.
“What can I do for you two?”
“Is there an Alessia Copelas that works here, maybe volunteers on the weekends?” Spencer asked, his puppy dog eyes immediately warranting a response.
“Yeah, she volunteers here, she seems nice. Is she helping with an investigation?”
“Well we think that she may have some part in a series of murders.”
Her smile disappeared this time, turning into a cement frown as panic flooded her body.
“Oh God, was she- Is she a killer? Have I been working with a killer for all this time? I mean, I never had any shifts with her but from what I heard I thought she was so sweet-“
“Look,”
Reid glanced down to her name tag that read “Lillian” before meeting her eyes. His tongue darted out, licking his lips, a nervous habit of his I’d picked up on.
“Lillian, we aren’t sure if she’s the killer we just needed to get a feel on her and get some information regarding her personal life.”
She started frantically nodding her head, more trying to convince herself she was okay rather than ourselves. I looked over her shoulder at some exhibits, thinking to myself how this would end up being a waste of our time if this poor girl couldn’t get a grip on herself.
I was soon proven wrong when I looked over to see a young girl wearing an identical uniform to Lillian, probably somewhere between 23 and 24. She had untamed chocolate locks with bangs that stopped just above the shoulder, blemishes covering her T-Zone, and a rounded face to go with it.
The cherry on top? Under her arm she carried a small enclosure with what appeared to be amarynthis meneria, the same butterflies found on the victims.
I tapped Reid on the shoulder once as discreetly as possible, catching his attention. I heard him mutter a small “Oh God” before he told Lillian to walk away calmly and quickly. She ignored his request, turning to look at Alessia, letting out a blood curdling scream and sprinting the other direction.
“Shit.” I cursed, beginning to walk towards Alessia, Spencer by my side. I smiled at her, trying to appear friendly. Reid spoke up as we got closer.
“Hello, do you by any chance-“
wham!
“Spence!” I exclaimed, reaching down to help him up from where he had fallen from being whacked by the 4’2 pyscho that was Alessia Copelas.
“Did she get away?”
I turned to see her gone, the only sign she was even here being the forming bruise on the Dr’s face.
“Yeah. She did. I’m sorry, Reid, that was really stupid of me.” He shook his head, running his own hand over the raw skin.
“It’s fine, I would have done the same for you.” He looked up, and I wasn’t sure if it was my school-girl esque crush on him or the fact I just had another experience with a serial killer, but my heart was racing nonetheless.
————————
F.B.I. Field Office, New York, New York, 1 Day Earlier
The stress levels in the room were high.
Despite our best efforts, several more bodies had been found, New York’s narcissists were in a state of panic, and the spirits of the BAU were down to say the least.
“What? Are you kidding me?” I exclaimed, looking at Hotch in disbelief.
He rolled his chocolate eyes, fanning the folder containing the new information we had gathered on Alessia.
“I wish I was, Y/n. She’s off the grid completely, her apartment is empty, phone and credit cards have been deactivated, and the surgeon’s office hasn’t heard from her for 5 days. And the media has decided to give her the name ‘Butterfly Baron’, so she’s probably been fueled even further. We need a new lead before she strikes again.”
I scoffed, standing up and pushing my chair away.
“This is unbelievable. How many times do we have to reinforce the idea to local PD! Especially when the unsub is a self absorbed psycho, do not give them a name! God, I really cannot fathom this.”
I reached up, letting my hair down from where I had messily thrown it up upon my arrival to work that morning.
I stormed out of the room, my heels clicking behind me. I ignored Hotch’s calling of my name, making my way to the closest restroom.
I went in, locking the door behind him. I ran my hands through my roots, tugging just enough to where it hurt.
Turning the water to the left all the way, I splashed it from the stream leaving the faucet on to my face. I scratched my fingernails against the skin, wiping away the tears that had escaped.
“This is all your fault, y/n.” I whispered at myself in the mirror, doing my absolute best to engrain the message in my brain. I had my head hung in shame when a knock rang out.
“Y/n?”
It was Spencer. My mind started going a million miles a minute, thinking about why he could be there. With my voice raised a few octaves, I tried to scrape up a response.
“I’ll be out in a few, Spence.”
It was quiet for a split second, leaving me to foolishly dance around the idea that he had left me to wallow in my sorrowful thoughts.
“Y/n, Hotch wanted me to check on you. Are you ok?”
My heart slightly sank at the idea that he might’ve just come to check on me because he himself was worried. I discarded the thought, bringing myself back.
“Y/n can you please answer me? If you don’t open the door I’m gonna send in JJ or Emily.”
I sighed, wiping under my eyes where my mascara had smudged, begrudgingly walking over to the door. Just as my hand landed on the silver handle, his voice that was constantly playing in my head echoed out once more.
“Y/n, please? I need to know you’re okay. I’ll come in there myself.”
A soft smirk graced my face as I turned the handle to reveal a worried looking Spencer.
“Y/n, oh God, you had me worried.”
He was quiet when he spoke and his hair looked messy, like he had been running his slender fingers through it in a stress filled state.
I sniffled, attempting to still keep back tears that were still threatening to spill.
“I’m alright, Spencer. Really, I’m fine.”
He gave me a small smile, his eyes meeting my own.
“I know, it’s just that when I had my Diludad problem,” he hesitated.
“I would lock myself in bathrooms to shoot up, and I know you aren’t having a problem like that but I just was worried about you- what are you doing?”
I cut off his rambling by throwing my arms around his middle. He tensed, but quickly melted. He wrapped his strong arms around my shoulders and my waist, laying his head on mine.
“Y/n, I promise you, you’re doing your absolute best to stop Alessia. We wouldn’t even be where we are right now if you hadn’t made the connections. Those deaths are not your fault.”
My tears finally began to cascade like a waterfall, staining his shirt.
“I know, but it’s just like it is all my fault! I could have paid closer attention, or-or, I could have went after her at the zoo, it’s all my fucking fault, Reid.”
I sobbed into his shirt, my hand gripping his shirt like my life depended on it. Like if I let go I would fall into a deep, deep, endless hole.
His hand on my waist moved up to cradle my head.
“It’s not, I promise you-“
He was cut off mid sentence by the ringing of his phone.
“I am so, so sorry-”
I pulled away, breifly touching under my nose with my wrist, then moving a hair behind my ear.
“Nope, it’s fine, don’t worry.” Our words almost had overlapped each other as we clambered to fight the tension that had risen. I closed my eyes, tilting my head up, thinking about how unprofessional yet intimate our previous position had been. How wrong, yet how right it felt.
I kept running the moment through my head, the feeling of his warm figure encasing mine on replay.
His phone call played as background noise to the film playing in my brain, his voice calming me to an extent.
“Yeah, we’re on our way. Thanks, Morgan.”
He closed the phone with a snap, also snapping me out of my trance, putting the movie on pause.
“They’ve got a hit. Copelas was seen dropping by her old apartment.”
And for the first time since that Goddamn case had started, I smiled genuinely.
“Let’s go get her.”
————————
15 Minutes Prior, Central Park, New York
“Hotch?”
“Yes?” He looked back from where he was driving, following our lead in a rushed manner.
“What will we do if she...” I trailed off.
“Hypnotizes one of us?” He finished for me. I nodded solemnly.
The look on his face was conflicted and it took him a moment to come up with a response.
“We kill her before we have to kill one of our team members.”
He saw a look of uncertainty on my face and spoke up once more.
“And that’s an order.”
I nodded again, making eye contact with him through the rear view mirror. I fell back into my seat, closing my eyes briefly.
After a few more minutes on the road, we had arrived.
The doors all slammed to the SUVs, one after the other as we stepped out.
“The letter said that she would be here, somewhere here.”
The voice of Morgan was channeling through my earpiece, referring to the letter found at her apartment that she had left just for us.
“We ordered evac on citizens, correct?”
The unsure voice of JJ was also heard through the earpiece, her uncertainty quite unusual to hear.
“Yes, it was the first thing we did, Jayj.”
I whispered, a sly smirk from Spencer forming at my behavior.
“Oh shut up.”
“I didn’t even say anything!”
snap!
Our senses adapted, becoming dialed to 11 at the sound of a twig snapping under someone's feet.
“Was that you?” I mouthed to Spencer. He shook his head no and I silently cursed to whatever force was listening.
I nodded, which he then reciprocated, the pair of us slowly walking towards the source of the sound after he did.
“They’re going to remember me, I’ll go down in history.”
The voice was sing-songy and quiet, floating through the air. I took a shaky breath, continuing my steady pace.
My breathing momentarily halted soon after.
Different variations of “Oh my God”s, and loud gasps from almost everyone on the team flooded my ear canal at the horrifying sight in front of us.
Red. So much of it.
“Guys, I think we know what she’s been doing with the bodies’ blood.”
“No shit.” I muttered under my breath.
She was bathed in the blood, it looked like something straight out of a horror movie.
“Alright everyone, I want you to approach her as quietly as possible, Morgan, if you get the chance, corner her.”
Hotch’s voice was a stark contrast to her own, Derek’s response all the same.
—————————
Present Day, Central Park, New York
“But Agents, you still haven’t answered my question. They’re beautiful, aren’t they?”
“Alessia Copeleas, FBI, come on, get up, lets go.”
Derek’s voice was stern, not asking, but demanding that Alessia come with us.
“I’m afraid I just can’t do that, Agents.”
She stood up abruptly, causing all of our weapons to rise. The sun reflected off of the silver metal of Reid’s gun, sparkling in a stunning way that caught me off guard.
We all were trying to act as if we were in total control of the situation, but we could tell that us nor Copelas really believed that. Her words were her weapon, and this was the one time where words could hurt, but sticks and stones had virtually no power.
“Take another step and we will have no hesitation to fire.”
She smirked, rolling her eyes.
“If you do, will I be famous you think? You think they’ll hear about me back home?”
Her curls softly blew in the wind, making her appear almost harmless, maybe even endearing, if it wasn’t for the hardening coat of human blood soaking her clothes and seeping from her skin.
“Is that what you want? The kids back home and everyone here to hear about you? You want ‘Butterfly Baron’ written on every billboard in Times Square, your picture painted in museums, films to be made in your honor?” Reid was the one who spoke up this time, his voice remaining strong. Her eyes shone with a sickening excitement at what he said.
“You want to be famous?”
She nodded vigorously.
“Too bad.”
My eyes widened, surprised at the detour the conversation had taken.
“What-what do you mean?”
“Please, the only thing people will hear about is a sad, boring little girl from a small town who killed to feel better about herself. They’ll forget about you in a week, who knows, maybe they’ll even grow an infatuation with your town, someone you went to school with may get as lucky as to catch their big break!” He laughed, while Alessia looked absolutely devastated.
“You? You’ll be a nobody.”
“That’s not true! I’ll go down in history, and they won’t! I’m the fucking butterfly baron for hells sake! All these people?” She gestured towards her field of bodies.
“You won’t remember their names, maybe not even their pretty faces, but me? I’ll live forever.”
Her nostrils flared and she strode over to Reid with purpose. The safety on my glock clicked off, but Spencer motioned for me to wait. So I did.
“You know, Agent-“
“It’s Doctor.”
This visibly agitated her even more as she started her sentence over again.
“Doctor, you have a beautiful bone structure. Absolutely perfect. Symmetrical, not to mention just flat out stunning.”
A glaze formed over Spencer’s honey eyes at her words. He lowered his gun momentarily before turning towards me, Copelas doing the same.
“And you, Agent. Wow. I feel like I’m in an art exhibit, you’re gorgeous. I think the Doctor man here would agree.”
As he lifted his revolver at me, the situation became all too real as I understood what was happening.
I either had to shoot the man that I was struggling to admit I was beginning to love, or died at the hands of the very same man.
Tears flooded my eyes, all safeties were turned down, and all guns were pointed at Reid.
“Spence, please.”
My voice was weak, something that seemed to bring Alessia lots of joy.
She laughed before talking again, commanding Spencer.
“Pathetic, really! Spence”, she mocked,“shoot her.”
“No!”
bang!
whack!
---------------------
Present Day, Somewhere In The Sky, The Jet
I opened my eyes from where I had been tackled to the ground by Hotch, surveying my surroundings to see Alessia laying on the grass, the source of her gunshot wound non-distinguishable from the previous blood on her body.
I looked to the right to see where Spencer had crumpled to, his frame bent in a discombobulated position.
“Spencer!” I cried out, crawling over to him like some sort of dog,
“What happened to him?”
“Y/n, he was going to shoot you-“
“I don’t care you should have let him!”
I cradled his head in my lap, allowing my pent up tears to fall.
“Y/n?”
My eyes snapped open for real this time, my mind calmed at the sight of Spencer sitting next to me on the couch, gently shaking my shoulder in an attempt to wake me from my nightmare.
“Spencer! Sorry, was I too loud?”
He chuckled, gesturing to the rest of the sleeping plane around us.
“You’re fine, I wasn’t sleeping, I decided to reread ‘Fahrenheit 451’ for nostalgia purposes. And you weren’t that loud, you just looked like you were having a bad dream.”
I chuckled at the not-so outlandish idea in an attempt to diminish it from his mind and move on.
“I’m fine. But fun fact, I did have nightmares after reading ‘The Veldt’. Seriously, I don’t get how you can just reread Bradbury’s stuff all the time.”
The genius scoffed, starting a rant on how Ray Bradbury’s storytelling was just classic literature and deserved to be reread, thus successfully changing the topic as I hoped my statement would. Although soon after, he caught on much quicker than I would have liked him to.
“And not to mention, The Veldt alone could be seen as a forewarning to the 21st century and beyond, even Bradbury himself supported that interpretation-‘
I gave him a tired smile, enjoying his rambling like I always did.
“-and you totally just got me to change the subject.”
“I was wondering when you were gonna catch up.”
“Hey!”
He laughed as I rested my head on my hand, trying to fall back asleep.
“Really, I can tell those nightmares are bad. What’s going on?” He questioned, his tone empathetic and compassionate.
“It’s nothing, Reid. I just keep seeing in the park, when Alessia got shot and you-you got hurt but instead of getting up like you did in real life, you just…”
I trailed off, not wanting to relive the negative dream any longer for fear of the tears that were pricking my eyes escaping.
“It’s okay, that didn’t happen, I’m right here.”
He pulled me into a hug, allowing me to bury my head in the crook of his neck, his warmth consuming me once more, a sequel to the film from earlier.
“I know, but what if it hadn’t?” I asked as I pulled away.
He shook his head, reaching for his wallet.
“In this job, this course of work, we can’t focus on ‘what if’s’. In this job, we also get nightmares, all of us. It happens.”
He slid a picture over to me, it was of a happy family. The edges were worn from years of being carried, but the picture seemed loved.
“Gideon gave me that when my nightmares started. He told me about how those families we save everyday, and how that’s what makes what we do worth it. And I know you didn’t know Gideon personally, or the work on the specific case with that family, but I want you to have it anyway-“
I cut him off by throwing my arms around his neck, attempting to speak despite being muffled by his fluffy sweater.
“Thank you, Spence. Truly.”
I smiled, and I imagined he was doing the same.
“No problem y/n. Anytime.”
I moved my legs over to be tucked underneath my arms, leaning into Reid. He wrapped his arm around me, also leaning in. We both managed to fall asleep for the remainder of the ride in our state of content, but not before he managed to sleepily call out my name.
“Y/n?”
“Yeah?”
“When we land do you wanna go on a date or somethin’?”
I smiled at him, separating from his form just long enough to see that beautiful face of his.
“Without a doubt.”

[image ID 1: caption at top of image reads “If anyone is without power and has a pot and candle...this is my moms. Provides heat for one room. I grew up in Alaska so we have all kinds of tricks!” Under the caption is a picture of a do-it-yourself flowerpot heater/ candle powered heater. The heater is displayed on a counter top and is constructed on a metal baking sheet. There is a burning candle in the center of two stacks of bricks. On top of the bricks is a flower pot that is flipped upsidedown over the candle with a plate covering the hole on the bottom of the pot to hold in the heat. The pot warms, creating a heater. End ID]
I’ve seen this post floating around and right away I want to say IT WORKS! Now it’s no comparison to a little electric heater but it can get up to 180° depending on size/thickness of your pot! Remove plants from pots if you need too (I did) and if you can make two of these do it! The build is really simple, you can also search flowerpot heater/ candle powered heater for other builds/tips.
Layer 1: pick where you’re putting it and protect your surface. Get a pan, plate, anything that can handle heat.
Layer 2: pick your candle(s) and some dishes or heat safe props (the bricks) about the same height or slightly shorter. Nothing taller, you don’t want to lose heat.
Layer 3: your pot needs to big enough to sit safely over your candle and on the props.
Layer 4: cover the hole on the flowerpot with a plate or anything that will handle heat. You don’t want smoke/fumes or heat escaping.
These heaters get hot so be careful! I was able to lightly touch mine every now and then to warm my hands but DO NOT move it without oven mits or some kind of protection!

[image ID 2: picture of a flower pot heater similar to the first image. It is built on a baking mat with a burning candle in the middle of four bowls. Resting on the bowls is a decorative pot that is flipped upsidedown over the candle. A small solid-bottom pot is being used to seal the hole in large pot. End ID]
This is my heater! I had to get creative but it still worked well. I used bowls instead of bricks and I had to remove my snake plant from the pot. You can make a bunch of small ones too if that’s all you have. Do make sure you’re still layering your clothes and practicing other ways to stay warm. There are a lot of helpful threads going around (that I would link to but I’m on mobile and have limited battery). We layered, covered the windows, shoved a towel under the door, pulled the bed to the center of the room, moved the dresser the heater is on closer to the bed..did all the things and it made a difference.
Sorry if this post is hard to follow, I’m in survival mode and have limited time. This is my first time writing image IDs also so please feel free to edit/add. I hope this is helpful!

magic (5)
Draco Malfoy Fanfic
one / two / three / four / six
Tumblr media
pairing: draco malfoy x reader genre: shifting realities, romance, clownshit plot: you were trying to shift for the lols but end up in harry potter world for reals with draco malfoy as your companion a/n: hope y’all like it, not edited <3
Your eyes narrowed as he walked into the small room with a cocky smirk on his face.
“What are you doing here?” You sneered at him with distaste.
Draco didn’t seem offended, instead, he found it rather amusing. He shrugged a shoulder nonchalantly as he walked around your room taking in the piles of paper scattered across the floor.
“I see you’ve been busy,” he rose his eyebrows with mocking impress at the mess.
When you didn’t reply, he looked away from the papers and over to you settled on the bed. You glared at him, feeling yourself get hotter as every second passed by.
“Don’t you have elsewhere to be?” You gritted, you couldn’t believe Malfoy would do this to you.
It had been a whole week since you had seen him. You were all alone in this stupid magic inn in the middle of nowhere.
You had been too terrified to go outside of the room or to even open the windows or curtains. You sat under the dim golden hue from the lanterns hanging above, day after day. Your eyes would stare at the door, half-frightened that someone will walk in, and the other half bleeding with the hope that Draco would waltz in any second.
But now that he was here, all you wanted to do was to kick him.
“Oh, come on,” Draco cooed looking pleased with your distressed state. “You miss me so terribly much, muggle?”
Your eyes burned with fury as you stared at him.
He had no idea what it was like being here for a whole entire week. Whatever magic the room had would make food and water appear, and clean the room, but leave the papers spread where you had left them.
When Draco brought you here after the game and told you to wait for him until he returned, you thought it’d be a few minutes, a few hours at most. But here he stood now, after a whole week in a black suit tailored perfectly to his lean body, his soft hair pushed back, and lips stained pink stark against his pale skin.
“You’re an asshole,” you finally spat at him, venom coating your tongue.
Draco didn’t recognise the threat or anger in your voice. Even if he did, he didn’t think much of it. He threw his head back letting out a chesty laugh, before smiling at you softly.
His piercing eyes softened a bit, and you felt tears threaten you.
There was no threat to your life, there was no danger. There was nothing. But you felt so weak, you were sure you would crumble as soon as Draco did the smallest action to check if you were okay.
But, Draco wasn’t known to be thoughtful. He looked away from you and slightly twisted in his spot.
“Care to explain what all this is?” He gestured to the endless lots of paper filled with your writing.
After that night at the camp, you had made a decision.
You hadn't wanted to hear the numbers of casualties from the other night. But without Draco, without any distraction, you couldn’t help but reach for the newspaper that appeared every morning. There were no casualties, no one died, a few injuries but nothing major.
As much as that relieved you, you knew this wasn’t the end. If anything this was the start.
This was the beginning of a painful and horrible journey, but you could help make it better.
You clicked your fingers and instantly the papers disappeared.
Draco lifted an eyebrow, amused, “Learn magic, did you muggle?”
Draco was letting go, letting you hide whatever you were planning on doing for a bit longer. You silently thanked him because you really didn’t have a solid plan, except for a definitive goal of avoiding all the death and unhappiness looming in the future.
“I know how to read manuals, Malfoy,” you rolled your eyes getting up from the bed. The layers of the blanket over you bunching at the bottom of the bed as you got up and walked towards the boy who stared at you intently.
“Where were you?” You asked, lifting your head to meet his stare. His piercing eyes studied you unblinkingly before he smiled gingerly, as he took a step back.
“Malfoy Mansion,” was all he said.
You let out a breathe, holding his eyes while you calmed down, as you gave him a bored smile.
“So what now?” You tsked, as you pulled your hair into a bun. “Are you going back after checking to see if I’m dead or not?”
Draco stared at you for a long moment, before snorting lightly.
“Actually,” he smiled, looking almost innocent. “I came to get you.”
You frowned, doubtful.
“It’s back to school season,” Draco’s grin widened. “Time to go back to Hogwarts.”
______________
“How much longer do I have to take in that sour face of yours?” Draco scoffed as he settled in front of you.
You decided to ignore him and look out the window instead. The platform was filled with young wizards and their parents buzzing around the train. You could easily tell the first years apart, if not by their young age, then their uneasiness was an easy tip-off.
“Merlin’s sake, muggle,” Draco sighed tiredly. “Are you going to act like this till eternity?”
You scowled at him now.
“Draco, you came back after a whole week. You literally disappeared.”
“But I came back,” he fussed. His face softened into one of a defeat for a second before darkening in a sneer. “You should be grateful that I even to came back. It would have been much easier to leave you there.”
“Why didn’t you then?” You bit back, making him roll his eyes.
“Your invisibility might actually prove to be useful for me,” Draco shrugged not looking at you, after a long minute.
You studied him for a moment, before snorting, “Stupid Malfoy.”
“Whatever, muggle.”
Draco pulled out a book reading it as you sat there watching the seats fill up. You read the title and frowned.
It was another book about consciousness and projection. You didn’t think much of it, Draco did end up being a master of alchemy after the war in the books. He obviously had an interest in certain areas of magic, and probably wanted to know all about this topic.
You didn’t realise you were staring at Draco until his icy eyes glanced up. His lips twisted into a smirk when he caught you, “Don’t get too curious, muggle.”
You snorted at him in reply.
“I think it would be better if you sat next to me,” Draco said, as his eyes drifted to the door. You followed his gaze to see Pansy and Blaise walk in, smiling as they spot him.
You stood at the end of the table just as Pansy and Blaise settled in front of Draco. They greeted him happily before Pansy shoved Blaise against the wall telling him to move over a bit.
Blaise retorted something and they fell into a jeering argument.
You stared at Draco and then at the empty seat on the other side of him. He rose his eyebrows at you, telling you to act.
You shuffled closer, studying the small distance between Draco and the edge of the table. Maybe you could risk climbing over the table?
But with a subtle pull of your jacket, Draco wordlessly ordered you to go past you him, hastily.
You gulped nervously as you placed a hand on the seat just above Draco’s shoulder, moving closer to him.
“So, Draco,” Pansy said, holding his attention. You silently thanked your stars for Pansy being a chatterbox as she began telling him about something that happened over the break.
Your hair slightly brushed Draco’s shoulder as you placed a knee on the seat to balance yourself.
Blaise and Pansy fell into another round of bickering, as you placed your other hand on the other side of Draco to stabilise yourself. Your hands landed on his shoulder instead of the seat behind him, but you didn’t move it.
Draco stared at you intently, you as you lifted knee and brought it over to the other side of him.
Your cheeks burned, as you gulped nervously.
You were straddling him right now. Your thighs burned as you held yourself up, trying not to sit on his lap. Your thighs grazing his lap ever so slightly.
Your stomach flipped, as your core tightened as lustful images flashed through your mind. It didn’t do anything to soothe the burning crimson brightening upon your face.
Draco’s piercing cold eyes stared into yours with an intensity you didn’t want to register. Your heart raced against your chest, as Draco’s scent invaded your mind.
He smelled so good; it reminded you of rain on a hot summer day and something else that you couldn’t put your finger on. Still, it was wonderfully dizzying.
You removed your hands from the seat behind him as you began shifting over to your seat.
Just as you removed your hand, the train jerked into movement. You fell forward, your hands landing on Draco’s chest. Your body straddling him, your thighs on his lap, your chest crushed into his. His warm minty breath softly falling your lips.
His hands, instinctively holding onto your waist to keep you from falling over, burned through your shirt.
Your body was on fire. Your mind burning with images of crashing your lips into his.
God, he was so absolutely gorgeous.
His blue eyes slowly drifted to your lips and you were a whisper away from exploding.
“What are you doing?” Blaise asked, pulling you out of your hazy state of mind. Draco instantly threw you to the side, a loud thud resounding as you landed painfully in your seat.
You groaned as you glanced up and glared at a wide-eyed Draco.
His hands remained in the same position as they were placed on your waist, searing your skin through the flimsy shirt.
“This big,” Draco muttered his eyes examined the distance between in his palms in fake interest. “This big... would be a... very large... pumpkin... do you reckon?”
You snorted at Draco who blinked back into reality, putting his hands away and sitting straight.
“No way!” Blaise shook his head, almost calling Draco an idiot. “There are pumpkins bigger than this entire cart!”
“Right,” Draco nodded, his eyes still dazed as he tried to reel himself back. “I was talking about the muggle world.”
“Nah man,” the other boy innocently shook his head, “In images, I saw pumpkins the side of this entire booth.”
“Oh,” was all Draco said, nodding in false wonder.
Your eyes darted to Pansy who started at Draco sceptically.
But before she could say anything, Blaise started again, “I didn’t get a single moment of peace this break.”
He sighed peering between his two friends. The other two gave up whatever chilly tension had settled between them and focused on a dejected Blaise instead.
“Merlin’s mercy, Hogwarts never gives us a break,” Blaise breathed, exhausted. “I spent the last seven days locked up in my room trying to finish charms assignment.”
You felt Draco’s eyes shift towards you. You glowered at him, in return, almost bearing your teeth at him in defence. The corners of his lips lifted into an amused smirk, as he turned to his two friends as they continued talking.
“At least Blaise knew he could go out whenever he wanted to,” you muttered under your breath, focusing on Draco. You placed your elbow on the table as you rested your head on your palm. “I was stuck there not able to go out, or knowing if there was an end.”
Draco’s jaws twitched, but he didn’t show any other sign of your existence.
“Prick,” you muttered as you turned to look out the window. Hogwarts Express was now sprinting through the plains towards the castle. You felt butterflies stir in your tummy as you nervously looked at the scene.
You didn’t realise when, but you had fallen asleep.
You woke up to an empty carriage, except for the annoyed boy glaring at you.
“Get up, you ugly oaf,” Draco hissed, making you sit up as you sleepily rubbed your eyes.
“Oh my,” you yawned stretching as you got up. “I haven’t seen able to sleep properly in so long.”
Draco looked away from you, as red splayed across his neck.
You blinked at him, confused. Before you could ask him what happened, he was already walking out of the ghastly empty train.
_____________
Your gaze bounced from one thing to another as you followed Draco through the empty halls of Hogwarts. You had luckily arrived after the welcoming ceremony had ended, and everyone had returned to their common rooms to socialise.
Your eyes couldn’t remain in one place for more than a second, taking in every little detail of Hogwarts. It was a beautiful work of art.
“Does Hogwarts not exist in the future?” Draco asked, studying you with an interest at your amazement.
Your feet halted for a second before you blinked back to your senses.
“Of course, it does,” you stammered, your cheeks burning. You didn’t look at Draco, focusing harder to look around the design on the walls.
You didn’t lie, technically.
Technically, Hogwarts did exist, just not in its physical form.
“Are muggles able to go inside?” He arched a perfect eyebrow. You gawked at him.
“No,” you whispered, looking down.
“Well, at least they have some common sense about leaving the dirty muggles out,” he sneered, and you felt your heart sink.
This is who Draco was, a muggle-hating person who believed in purebloods and purity.
You stared at Draco as he marched on in front of you. His hands tucked into his pockets arrogantly. He looked more confident and comfortable here then he did at home.
“So what happens in the welcoming ceremony?” You quickly asked, trying to change the topic.
“Nothing really,” Draco sighed, looking over his shoulder. “The Sorting Hat sorts the newcomers, and then Dumbledoor does the speech he does every single time.”
“Sounds fun,” you muttered, sarcastically.
“We didn’t miss much,” Draco answered as you stopped at the enterance of the Slytherin common room. “Emerald.”
You smiled at that, it wasn’t ‘pure-bood’ anymore.
You followed behind quietly, watching him as he walked through the maze of hallways of the dungeon. He stopped in front a door.
“The password is potty potter,” Draco told you over his shoulder.
You bit back a laugh at that. You couldn’t believe the password to Draco’s room was made solely to shit on Harry Potter.
“Come on,” he smirked, observing your humoured face.
You walked in and looked around in awe. It was much smaller than his room back at Malfoy Manor, and while the theme of dark green and black had carried over, this room was filled with warmth and memories.
You walked towards the wall filled with photos, posters and banners. His quidditch team photos, awards and academic achievements were there. But more than those were photos of places around Hogwarts. There were a few with people in them; mostly Blaise and Pansy. A few with Crabbe and Goyle, his mother,  but barely any of his father.
“Wow,” you whispered, before turning back to Draco. “I thought this would be an exact replica of your bedroom at the mansion.”
Draco shrugged, looking meek as he sat down at the edge of the bed.
You sat on the couch and Draco smiled, “At least you know where your bed is.”
“The couch?” You gaped at him, before pouting, “Can’t you magic one?”
“Snape will know,” he shrugged, looking smug.
“Risk it.”
“Risk you?” He quirked an eyebrow.
You shrugged, and he rolled his eyes.
“I can’t risk you,” Draco said making butterflies flutter in your tummy. But then his face twisted into a sneer as he continued, “You are my secret weapon.”
You huffed folding your arms, “Are you going to tell me your big plans?”
“Will you tell me yours in return?” He asked, knowingly.
“Jokes on you, I don’t have one,” you beamed, lying.
“Then what were all those papers?”
“I was trying to remember what happens next,” you told him honestly, at least in half-truth. “It did kind of work. I do have a better understanding of the timeline.”
Draco remained still for a long moment as he watched you.
“That night,” he finally said, his voice faint. “Those things that you saw before the fire started, were they from your memory?”
You nodded slowly, thinking of the scenes again. Draco blinked, his face hardening.
“How accurate are these memories?” He asked carefully.
Your brows furrowed as you stared at him in confusion, “What do you mean?”
“The fire, the flames, the Death Eaters,” Draco’s cold eyes stared into yours, not looking away. You felt your stomach sink at how serious he was being. “All of that was exactly as what took place.”
“Yeah, they were from my memories,” you answered, not sure what he was trying to do.
“Do you think they were accurate?”
“I don’t know, it is just my memory. I can't guarantee it a hundred per cent.”
Draco sat there for a long moment. His shoulders stiff, his mind lost in deep thought.
“I saw my father in them,” Draco spoke very deliberately, his jaw tightening. “Was that true?”
“I-” You stammered as your heart raced. You weren’t sure. “It’s just my memory, it could be wrong.”
“But you have seen him in a field of Death Eaters?” He asked, his voice cold, his eyes distant now. “It happens.”
Not a question, but you nod.
Draco sighed, his head hanging.
“Okay,” he said after a minute. “Go to sleep, muggle.”
He strolled towards the door, your eyes following him, “On the couch?”
He didn’t look back at you.
“Where are you going?” You asked, making him stop.
“Even though you are a filthy little muggle,” he spoke, his voice failing to lighten with humour. “But as a wizard, I do have some honour. A bed to sleep in does not make a difference.”
“I can sleep on the bed?” You jumped up, he turned to look at you now. “What about you?”
Draco never shared a room with you, even at the Manor. He would stay and do his own thing when you went to sleep. But when you would wake up in the middle of the night, he’d be missing.
“Don’t worry about me, muggle,” he spat, cold.
“Wait. Draco!” You called as his hand touched the handle. You didn’t want him to go. You had just gotten company again, you didn’t want to be alone again.
“Go to sleep.” Draco sighed heavily before slipping out.
______________
“Welcome back,” you greeted the blonde haired boy as he walked in with a basket in his hand.
When you quirked an eyebrow at the basket Draco let out a exhausted sigh putting it on the table in front of you.
“Eat up, muggle.” he ordered before collapsing onto the seat in front of you.
Before you opened the basket the delicious smell of breakfast wafted out making your tummy grumble. You pulled out a plate the food magically kept in place.
“Do you want me to take your plate out?” You asked him, carefully. You didn’t know if he’d eat food touched by a muggle.
“It doesn’t matter,” Draco’s cold eyes rested on you, his jaw locking as if the silent question offended him. You ignored him and pulled out his plate and placed it infront of him.
A moan escaped your lips as you bit into the food. You hadn’t realised how hungry you were, and how long it had been since you had your last meal. Everything feels like a haze here.
“You know, muggle,” Draco lifiting his gaze to meet yours as he dug into his food. “You are quiet high maintenance for a pet.”
“Pet?” You spat as you gawked at the gorgeous smirking man in front of you.
“What else could you possibly be considered?” Draco replied, in an exaggerated bored tone.
“Didn’t you call me your secret weapon yesterday?” You smirked at him.
Draco just ignored you.
“So where did you hide last night?” You pryed, making Draco roll his light eyes.
“A girl’s dorm, perhaps?” You teased when he didn’t reply for a long moment.
“I was in Blaise’s dorm,” Draco answered quickly, a hint of pink on his cheeks.
“And you plan to remain there forever?” You quirked an eyebrow at Draco who stared at you annoyed. “You can’t keep sleeping at other places when you have your own dorm, Draco.”
“I do as I please,” Draco answered, sharply.
“Sure, until people get suspicious.” You retorted, shaking your head at his stubborness. “Just get another bed, or we’ll take turns, or-”
“Oh I see what this is,” Draco snorted, cutting you off as he laughed lightly. “This is all a part of you plan to seduce me.”
“Excuse me?” You chocked.
Draco didn’t reply. He smirked at you in victory, making you groan in anger.
“It’s not going to work,” he cooed.
You decided to ignore him, and ate the rest of your breakfast sliently.
You placed the empty plate down before you peered up at Draco with a question burning the tip of your tongue.
“Speak,” Draco muttered, not even looking at you. “I can sense the curiosity raiding off you.”
“How did you know what I saw that night?” You asked him. Draco looked up, his sharp eyes peering into yours. “I never told you about them, so how?”
Draco sighed, before running a hand through his pushed back hair making it fall messily. “I read your mind.”
“What?”
“At first I thought it was because you were so pathetically easy to read, but then I began to suspect it to be something else. And that night just made it clear,” Draco explained, as you stared at him confused. “It almost feels as if you’re standing on the other side of a tunnel just shouting or sending images into my mind.”
“I,” you breathed lost, “have no idea what to say.”
“Well, there is nothing much to say,” Draco sighed exhausted. “I have spent the past week trying to figure it out, but much like your invisibility it makes absolutely no sense at all.”
You didn’t reply. Your mind in deep thought, processing everything as you picked up a grape and plopped into your mouth.
Draco got up straightening his coat, “A little suggestion though, muggle.”
You looked up to meet his sparkling eyes, waiting for him to continue.
“Nothing,” he said, happily holding back a grin with a smirk. “Don’t worry your pretty little muggle mind over this, pet.”
And then he walked out once again.

Dark Bramble Guide [Taco Bell update]
My friend keeps getting deep space murdered so I figured I would help.  Please note: I am extremely witty and hilarious and I know it.
So here’s what I’ve learned.
Dark Bramble has five SIX AUGH different openings.  Four along the sides, one on “top,” and one on the “bottom.”  I consider Dark Bramble to be “upright” when it is oriented like so:
Tumblr media
Most of the time you’re going to be dumped in front of the four middle openings, which can be the hardest to recognize if you don’t know where to look.
I’ve also determined two routes.  In some cases you can get straight to the Vessel, and in others it’s better to go to the Escape Pod 3 first, and then change your marker to the Vessel (which at least gives you something to do while you’re floating past the three fish).  There is ALWAYS a fish guarding a Vessel seed, but the one in the Escape Pod room is much easier to avoid aggroing as a rule.
Bear in mind that when identifying these routes, I have just shot for my targets (Escape Pod, Vessel) completely full throttle the entire time, not giving a fuck in the world, and eliminated routes that get me eaten this way.  So the key to fish avoidance is to go in one direction as much as possible and avoid firing your rockets in any other directions; often I have been able to full throttle right past a fish that didn’t get upset till I fired a rocket to one side or the other.
I’ve decided to help identify these with some features I call the Dewclaw and the Forsaken Breadstick:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right in between the Dewclaw and the Breadstick, we have Chili’s:
Tumblr media
Chili’s has an Escape Pod in an ok place close by the entrance, and if you’re practicing going straight from Timber Hearth to Dark Bramble, you will always see Chili’s first.  But there’s some vines and stuff in the way of the Escape Pod that make this route sub-par.  There’s better places, so we’re gonna skip Chili’s.  Let’s talk about Tim Hortons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tim Hortons is always to the right of Chili’s and the Breadstick and has the best Escape Pod route on the planet, apart from his brother Tom Hortons (who we will get to later).  There’s no fish getting to the Escape Pod’s seed, it’s VERY close, and I have always avoided fish on my way to the Vessel seed from very soon after entering the room unless I was looking for a fish for Science (though there’s some annoying twisting geometry in the way if you don’t go in the direction of the Escape Pod for a bit).  His Vessel route is very dangerous (2 fish yikes) and I got insanely lucky, so that’s a hard no.
This Escape Pod is the route I used to beat the game, so I’m sure it works once you have the warp core (I don’t know if more fish can spawn after you get the warp core but just in case).
Left of Chili’s, we have Olive Garden:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So at first I didn’t really recommend Olive Garden, because I thought the Escape Pod route was ideal and its Escape Pod will absolutely kill you.  But its Vessel route is actually pretty straightforward and could actually be a winner (I had a hard time attracting the attention of its fish).  It seems like Olive Garden tends to be the facing you get when you go straight from the Twins to Dark Bramble with the warp core so it’s probably the one most people naturally go into first.
To the right of Olive Garden (and left of Tim), basically in the “back” of Dark Bramble if you’re facing Chili’s like when you first arrive, there’s Tim’s brother Tom.  This far around it’s hard to see our main two landmarks so here’s a newer, shittier one (sorry):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I called him Tom Hortons because at first I thought he was basically a copy of Tim’s, but Tom is actually better because Tom is an all around yes man.  You want to go Escape Pod?  Do it bud.  Vessel seed?  Yeah man.  Tom’s a bro.  However he is, as I discovered intensely painfully, very easy to mistake for Dark Bramble’s sixth location (the one most visible from directly on “top”), which I have decided to call Taco Bell because it is a pain in my ass:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taco Bell is kind of caged in by everybody’s sick ‘do’s and is most easily accessible from going around back of Chili’s, to either Olive Garden or Tom Hortons.  It has a perfectly acceptable Escape Pod, and its Vessel seed is basically completely hit or miss.  There’s a vine in front of it in some orientations, so if you go the wrong way around it there’s a Very Mad fish. So like, unless you’re aiming for an Escape Pod route, just don’t go to Taco Bell, y’know?  It’s not worth it.
Finally, on the bottom, there’s Subway:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Subway is extremely easy to find because it’s on the very bottom and caged inside a bunch of vines that can be a little tricky to navigate.  Also, its Escape Pod route will kill you.  Its Vessel route may, potentially, also kill you--I found the fish easier to aggro--but it is very close and convenient like Olive Garden and Tom Hortons.  Basically you might as well go to one of those, they’re just as close and easier on entry, but if you’re really struggling to identify them then Subway is impossible to miss.  You have to want to go there.
Again, orientation is EVERYTHING in Dark Bramble, so if I say things are in the upper left/right/whatever then that’s gonna be meaningless if you approach from a different angle, but here are some outside and inside photos from the center openings as approached from an “upright” angle.  This is proceeding around Dark Bramble’s center, starting from Chili’s and moving right:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Taco Bell on top and Subway on bottom are impossible for me to give a consistent orientation for, so Subway may vary significantly from what you see depending on your angle:
Tumblr media
Taco Bell is a pain in the ass so it gets two of these based on which other (better) opening you face before you fly “up” over it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So basically, the safe Escape Pod seeds tend to be very close to the ceiling or wall and out of the way, and if the Vessel seed looks far away I’d try another entrance.  From cross-referencing I have determined that a safe initial distance is usually between 1 and 1.3km, and a distance between 1.5 and 1.7km almost certainly has a fish, but again some orientations may still end up attracting attention where others would not.
Best Escape Pod Routes:
Tom Hortons
Tim Hortons
Taco Bell
Chili's (obstructed)
Best Vessel Routes:
Tom Hortons
Olive Garden
Subway
Taco Bell (obstructed)
I am pretty sure that both the Escape Pod room and the Vessel room are the same entrance flipped around different ways no matter where you enter the seed, and it’s really impossible to make the orientation consistent, but as a result both the Pod and the Vessel should be in the same place and you can navigate from there.
If you choose to take an Escape Pod route, I’d recommend aiming for the Escape Pod itself until you see a really prominent red glow from the Vessel seed.  This can help you avoid all the crap floating around in the way, and it’s also completely safe once you get into the vines (I have never been eaten there from any orientation).  Alternatively, following the lights to the dead Nomai also gives you a straight shot to the Vessel seed with what feels to me like the smallest possible chance of running into a fish (I think this is a gameplay mechanic), but it takes longer.
Once you actually make it into the Vessel seed DO NOT MOVE.  You will not hit the fish.  You cannot hit the fish.  You will literally go through the fish, and then it’s ok to start accelerating up to 2 bars as long as you are under 900km away from the Vessel marker (but probably safer at under 800km). After further testing, I’m pretty sure there’s only one fish inconveniently close to the final seed, which you pass on the way.  I tend to be drifting at this point to make sure I don’t slam into the branch between me and the seed, so I don’t recommend going above 1 bar around here if you can help it, the fish is more aggressive than I first thought and it’s kind of 50/50 whether he’ll actually chase you.
Fortunately, there’s a pretty foolproof direction to go in:
Tumblr media
This last branch before the seed has a little curved area that is the perfect size for your ship, and if you go through it while still aiming for the Vessel, you will be almost perfectly lined up for an opening.  (In this particular orientation I managed not to alert the fish at all, but it’s not a good idea to stop to adjust here, I’d just aim for this opening regardless.)
I think this section is kinda designed for the fish to notice you, and even if he does, you’re generally going to be close enough to the seed to make it inside before he can reach you.  But sometimes he screams at me just as I’m about to go inside it even if he made no reaction before, so be prepared for that possibility.
Last tips: -If you do attract a fish, try to put it between you and a seed.  It will get slowed down or stuck in the geometry, giving you some time to go into the seed. -If a fish groans and comes your way, stop thrusting IMMEDIATELY.  If you go dark before it screams, it will go where it last heard the noise and you can coast right past.  (It helps to be going at a pretty fast pace.) -For endgame setup, I found 2:00 - 3:00 to be an optimal timing to doze off at the fire before going to Ash Twin to catch the first cycle (but that can vary across consoles/computers).
(Edit: Looks like my theme is not nice to these images so larger versions are available here if you need clearer ones, or the full guide is also up on Steam now because I am a menace.)
On a final note, Outer Wilds doesn’t care about your suffering, which is why the very first time I finally pulled out the warp core, Ember Twin got ahold of my ship and did this shit to it:

thanks for coming to my ted talk good luck with ur endless fish.
