German IDM Playlist (YouTube)
If you liked last week's 1990s IDM playlist update, then you're sure to like this slate of IDM tunes from Germany that I just cobbled together too. A bunch of chill, immersive, solitudinous, meditative, and intricate tracks to bliss all the way out to that'll have you looking and feeling like the humanoid from the Artificial Intelligence cover 😌.
Tumblr media
We start with an amazing dispatch from UK trio The Black Dog, whose 1994 remix of Darmstadt duo Alter Ego's "Tanks Ahead" makes for a really lovely, acid-cascading IDM dreamscape of sorts. It originally appeared on the B-side of an Alter Ego 12-inch called Nude Restaurant, which was released on Frankfurt label Harthouse, and then was included on a Harthouse comp called Dark Hearts - Volume 1 the following year. There's multiple uploads of this song on YouTube, and together their play count totals somewhere around 15.2K. By far the most played track in this playlist.
Following that is a stunner from an unknown Bavarian duo called Druckwelle. These guys only put out two 12-inches in their career that both came out in '98, but in 2000, they also had an exclusive called "Unteracherting" that appeared on the Leeds-based Leaf label's Invisible Soundtracks Volume 4 comp. Only 195 views on YouTube. Heady banger.
Next, a grip of tunes from a 2000 double-disc compilation that I've really come to cherish over the years called Putting the Morr Back in Morrissey. The album has nothing to do with The Smiths' frontman, but instead features some popular names from the German realms of indie, electronic, and post-rock: The Notwist, Arovane, and Lali Puna, to name a few. All pretty low play counts on these tracks, ranging from a little above 150 to a little over 2K. Earthy and organic feel to a lot of them.
And lastly, a few cuts from another compilation from 2000 called Cashier Escape Route, put out on the Manchester, UK-based City Centre Offices, who also had a branch in Berlin. The album's subtitle labels itself as Modern Supermarket Music and I think its exclusive theme, "Cashier Escape Song," by Berlin's Styrofoam, happens to nail the vibe quite well; bright, chipper, futuristic, kaleidoscopic song. Only 79 plays.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible and links are provided below to songs that have been posted about previously in order to give them more context:
Alter Ego - "Tanks Ahead (Black Dog Mix)" Druckwelle - "Unteracherting" The Notwist - "Scoop" Arovane - "Delc:r" Blond - "Status" Kandis - "Herbstzwilling (Tied & Tickled Trio Rmx)" Tied & Tickled Trio - "Utrom (Kandis Remix)" Blond - "Status (B. Fleischmann Rmx)" Lali Puna - "Fast Forward (Flowchart Rmx)" Dynamo - "18°" Styrofoam - "Cashier Escape Song" Roger van Lunteren - "N-2097"
12 songs. 65 minutes.
Playlist is also on YouTube Music.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

For now, Alex Lagetko is holding on to his Tesla stocks. The founder of hedge fund VSO Capital Management in New York, Lagetko says his stake in the company was worth $46 million in November 2021, when shares in the electric carmaker peaked at $415.
Since then, they have plunged 72 percent, as investors worry about waning demand, falling production and price cuts in China, labor shortages in Europe, and, of course, the long-term impact of CEO Elon Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter. After announcing his plans to buy the platform in April, Musk financed his acquisition with $13 billion in loans and $33 billion in cash, roughly $23 billion of which was raised by selling shares in Tesla.
“Many investors, particularly retail, who invested disproportionately large sums of their wealth largely on the basis of trust in Musk over many years were very quickly burned in the months following the acquisition,” Lagetko says, “particularly in December as he sold more stock, presumably to fund losses at Twitter.”
Lagetko is worried that the leveraged buyout of Twitter has left Tesla exposed, as interest payments on the debt Musk took on to fund the takeover come due at the same time as the social media company’s revenues have slumped.
But Tesla stock was already falling in April 2022, when Musk launched his bid for Twitter, and analysts say that the carmaker’s challenges run deeper than its exposure to the struggling social media platform. Tesla and its CEO have alienated its core customers while its limited designs and high prices make it vulnerable to competition from legacy automakers, who have rushed into the EV market with options that Musk’s company will struggle to match.
Prior to 2020, Tesla was essentially “playing against a B team in a soccer match,” says Matthias Schmidt, an independent analyst in Berlin who tracks electric car sales in Europe. But that changed in 2020, as “the opposition started rolling out some of their A squad players.”
In 2023, Tesla is due to release its long-awaited Cybertruck, a blocky, angular SUV first announced in 2019. It is the first new launch of a consumer vehicle by the company since 2020. A promised two-seater sports car is still years away, and the Models S, X, Y, and 3, once seen as space-age dynamos, are now “long in the tooth,” says Mark Barrott, an automotive analyst at consultancy Plante Moran. Most auto companies refresh their looks every three to five years—Tesla’s Model S is now more than 10 years old.
By contrast, this year Ford plans to boost production of both its F-150 Lighting EV pick-up, already sold out for 2023, and its Mustang Mach-E SUV. Offerings from Hyundai IONIQ 5 and Kia EV6 could threaten Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 in the $45,000 to $65,000 range. General Motors plans to speed up production and cut costs for a range of EV models, including the Chevy Blazer EV, the Chevy Equinox, the Cadillac Lyric, and the GMC Sierra EV.
While Tesla’s designs may be eye-catching, their high prices mean that they’re now often competing with luxury brands.
“There is this kind of nice Bauhaus simplicity to Tesla’s design, but it’s not luxurious,” says David Welch, author of Charging Ahead: GM, Mary Barra, and the Reinvention of an American Icon. “And for people to pay $70,000 to $100,000 for a car, if you’re competing suddenly with an electric Mercedes or BMW, or a Cadillac that finally actually feels like something that should bear the Cadillac name, you’re going to give people something to think about.”
While few manufacturers can compete with Tesla on performance and software (the Tesla Model S goes to 60 mph in 1.99 seconds, reaches a 200-mph top speed, and boasts automatic lane changing and a 17-inch touchscreen for console-grade gaming), many have reached or are approaching a range of 300 miles (480 km), which is the most important consideration for many EV buyers, says Craig Lawrence, a partner and cofounder at the investment group Energy Transition Ventures.
One of Tesla’s main competitive advantages has been its supercharging network. With more than 40,000 proprietary DC fast chargers located on major thoroughfares near shopping centers, coffee shops, and gas stations, their global infrastructure is the largest in the world. Chargers are integrated with the cars’ Autobidder optimization & dispatch software, and, most importantly, they work quickly and reliably, giving a car up to 322 miles of range in 15 minutes. The network contributes to about 12 percent of Tesla sales globally.
“The single biggest hurdle for most people asking ‘Do I go EV or not,’ is how do I refuel it and where,” says Loren McDonald, CEO and lead analyst for the consultancy EVAdoption. “Tesla figured that out early on and made it half of the value proposition.”
But new requirements for funding under public charging infrastructure programs in the US may erode Tesla’s proprietary charging advantage. The US National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program will allocate $7.5 billion to fund the development of some 500,000 electric vehicle chargers, but to access funds to build new stations, Tesla will have to open up its network to competitors by including four CCC chargers.
“Unless Tesla opens up their network to different charging standards, they will not get any of that volume,” Barrott says. “And Tesla doesn’t like that.”
In a few years, the US public charging infrastructure may start to look more like Europe’s, where in many countries the Tesla Model 3 uses standard plugs, and Tesla has opened their Supercharging stations to non-Tesla vehicles.
Tesla does maintain a software edge over competitors, which have looked to third-party technology like Apple’s CarPlay to fill the gap, says Alex Pischalnikov, an auto analyst and principal at the consulting firm Arthur D. Little. With over-the-air updates, Tesla can send new lines of code over cellular networks to resolve mechanical problems and safety features, update console entertainment options, and surprise drivers with new features, such as heated rear seats and the recently released full self-driving beta, available for $15,000. These software updates are also a cash machine for Tesla. But full self-driving features aren’t quite as promised, since drivers still have to remain in effective control of the vehicle, limiting the value of the system.
A Plante Moran analysis shared with WIRED shows Tesla’s share of the North American EV market declining from 70 percent in 2022 to just 31 percent by 2025, as total EV production grows from 777,000 to 2.87 million units.
In Europe, Tesla’s decline is already underway. Schmidt says data from the first 11 months of 2022 shows sales by volume of Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB) vehicles outpaced Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 by more than 20 percent. His projections show Tesla’s product lines finishing the year with 15 percent of the western European electric vehicle market, down from 33 percent in 2019.
The European Union has proposed legislation to reduce carbon emissions from new cars and vans by 100 percent by 2035, which is likely to bring more competition from European carmakers into the market.
There is also a growing sense that Musk’s behavior since taking over Twitter has made a challenging situation for Tesla even worse.
Over the past year, Musk has used Twitter to call for the prosecution of former director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci (“My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci”), take swings at US senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders over government spending and inflation, and placed himself at the center of the free speech debate. He’s lashed out at critics, challenging, among other things, the size of their testicles.
A November analysis of the top 100 global brands by the New York–based consultancy Interbrand estimated Tesla’s brand value in 2022 at $48 billion, up 32 percent from 2021 but well short of its 183 percent growth between 2020 and 2021. The report, based on qualitative data from 1,000 industry consultants and sentiment analysis of published sources, showed brand strength declining, particularly in “trust, distinctiveness and an understanding of the needs of their customers.”
“I think [Musk’s] core is rapidly moving away from him, and people are just starting to say, ‘I don’t like the smell of Tesla; I don’t want to be associated with that,’” says Daniel Binns, global chief growth officer at Interbrand.
Among them are once-loyal customers. Alan Saldich, a semi-retired tech CMO who lives in Idaho, put a deposit down on a Model S in 2011, before the cars were even on the road, after seeing a bodiless chassis in a Menlo Park showroom. His car, delivered in 2012, was number 2799, one of the first 3,000 made.
He benefited from the company’s good, if idiosyncratic, customer service. When, on Christmas morning 2012, the car wouldn’t start, he emailed Musk directly seeking a remedy. Musk responded just 24 minutes later: “...Will see if we can diagnose and fix remotely. Sorry about this. Hope you otherwise have a good Christmas.”
On New Year’s Day, Joost de Vries, then vice president of worldwide service at Tesla, and an assistant showed up at Saldich’s house with a trailer, loaded the car onto a flatbed, and hauled it to Tesla’s plant in Fremont, California, to be repaired. Saldich and his family later even got a tour of the factory. But since then, he’s cooled on the company. In 2019, he sold his Model S, and now drives a Mini Electric. He’s irritated in particular, he says, by Musk’s verbal attacks on government programs and regulation, particularly as Tesla has benefited from states and federal EV tax credits.
“Personally, I probably wouldn’t buy another Tesla,” he says. “A, because there’s so many alternatives and B, I just don’t like [Musk] anymore.”

Football Survey 2022
For the last decade, if not longer, I’ve done an end of year gig survey, giving a bit of an overview of the gigs I’ve attended this year. For the first time since I had a half season-ticket for Gillingham’s glorious promotion winning season of 1999-2000, I’ve attended more football matches than gigs in a calendar year - so I thought, why not rejig the survey for football?
Top 5 games of the year?
England 2 Germany 1 aet, Wembley, 31st July
BSG Chemie Leipzig 1 Berliner Dynamo 1, Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark, 13th March
Arsenal  7 Aston Villa 0, Meadow Park, 1st May
Germany 4 Denmark 0, Brentford Community Stadium, 8th July
Arsenal 2 Ajax Amsterdam 2, Meadow Park, 20th September
Total number of matches?
Eleven, first year in ages I’ve hit double digits!
First match of the year?
Chemie Leipzig 1 Berliner Dynamo 1, 13th March
Last match of the year?
Arsenal 1 Everton 0, 3rd December
Most surprising game?
I honestly didn’t expect England to come out on top in the Euro 2022 final!
Most disappointing?
England 0 Czech Republic 0, 11th October. I’ve had hangovers more fun than that.
Farthest travelled?
Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark in Leipzig, 600 miles/1,000 km from my front door.
States attended games in?
Cheerful, grateful, euphoric, drunk, bored, knackered and achy.
Stadium most visited?
Amex/Falmer Community stadium in Brighton and Meadow Park in London, both three times.
Worst injury?
I had a horrible attack of hay-fever during the second half of the Germany vs Denmark game that sent me scrambling for antihistamines in a nearby Sainsburys afterwards. This was mid July, in the middle of a hot spell that I thought had burnt up all plant life in the country, and after not being affected by hay-fever all year prior to that I thought I was safe - evidently not!
Most expensive ticket?
The Euro 2022 final ticket was £25, that was my highest. The perks of watching women’s football! (Or 4th tier German men’s football)
Player seen the most?
I saw Lena Oberdorf play four times for club and country - the first two, in club colours, I didn’t really appreciate her style, but I came around quickly after she tucked Pernille Harder in her pocket for Germany! I think Leah Williamson and Beth Mead top her with six appearances apiece. Shoutout to Karen Holmgaard who was the only player I saw play twice for two different clubs - Turbine Potsdam in May, and Everton in December. She didn’t make it off the bench for Germany’s massacre of Denmark, otherwise I would’ve seen her play three times for three different teams, with a combined scoreline of 0-9 in those games!
Best new discovery?
Definitely Lena Oberdorf! Her tough-tackling style, complete with Wob buying up two of my other favourite German players (Merle Frohms and Jule Brand), plus my partner being in awe of Wassmuth’s cheekbones and Jonsdottir’s...general awesomness, means that I’ve been streaming more Wolfsburg games than I expected this autumn.
Bands seen this year that also broke up this year?
I’m not sure how to make this football related, but I’m open to suggestions.
Friends made at games?
I don’t know if they count, as I knew Joel online before the matches, but in May I flew to Cologne all alone for the German cup final (Wolfsburg vs Turbine Potsdam). A 50,000 seater stadium, and I knew only one other person there. Walking out of the toilets before the match, guess who I bump into? We sat together and had a great time, even if the result didn’t go our way. Two months later, having sat with Jamie, Mary, Adam and friends before the match, I made my way around the Wembley concourse to find my gate for the Euros final when I hear my name shouted from a queue. Guess who it was?!
Footballers met?
Tricky, in this post-COVID era, and with the general increase in popularity of the women’s game this will become rarer. But after the Arsenal vs Villa game at the end of last season I met and got a photo with then-England keeper Hannah Hampton - a player I’ve both enjoyed and been frustrated by watching whenever she’s played against a team I like.
Best souvenir from a game?
My Chemie Leipzig scarf is soft, comfortable, and confuses the heck out of people as it’s green and white. (”Who’s that? Celtic? Plymouth? Yeovil? St Etienne?”)
Longest time in line?
Aside from Wembley, I’ve had very little queuing.
Games seen from the front row?
Arsenal’s games at Meadow Park I’ve seen from my favoured spot on the front row of the northern terraces. I was pretty far forward for the Wolfsburg vs Turbine game and as a consequence couldn’t see much action in the opposite goalmouth.
Most games in one month?
July had four, a result of my country hosting an international tournament.
Most games in one week?
Two! Austria vs Norway and England vs Spain within five days of each other.
Biggest crowd?
Wembley, for the Euros final! 87,192 in attendance, the largest crowd for a European Championship game ever, of any gender.
Any drunk encounters?
I took advantage of being able to drink beer in the stands at the two games in Germany. The England vs Czech Republic game was so dull I made good use of Harvey’s being on tap in the lounge nearby, too. I also had a fun encounter with a drunk Portsmouth fan at the England vs Spain game.
Top 5 best 2022 footballing moments:
1. There were three iconic goals that did the advancement of the women’s game in England no end of good this summer, and I witness two of them in person! Chloe Kelly’s winner against Germany in the goalmouth at my end in the final is an obvious one, as well as Russo’s cheeky backheel in the semi. But Ella Toone’s equaliser in the quarter final against Spain was just as important. This was the first of four quarter final matches, and after a rampaging group stage the Lionesses had really captured the attention of the country. Had they gone out the first time they played a decent team it would’ve deflated the mood; attendances probably would’ve dropped, the usual sexist bores would’ve trumpeted the usual remarks, and it would not have come home. With Toone’s header - and Stanway’s winner - they really got the country behind them!
2. For sheer luck, bumping into the same person in crowds of 50,000 and 87,000 on separate occasions was great!
3. Chatting to a drunk Portsmouth fan next to me at the England vs Spain game. I was wearing an old Germany away shirt, for fun.
"So, <cod 'allo 'allo style accent>, ver you 'oping vor Germany tonight?"
Me: "No, my friends thought it would be funny if I wore a Germany shirt to the game."
After discussing the tournament so far: "What was the last club match you went to?" "Wolfsburg vs Turbine Potsdam in the German cup final" "Is that your team then, Wolfsburg?" "Nah, I'm a Gillingham fan!" I genuinely think I broke him.
Me: "Weird seeing a match from this angle, it's like a Football Manager game!" Him: "Dare I ask which team you're managing?" "Pisa, in Italy" "You fascinate me, man"
4. On the subject of Football Manager - in March 2020, Red Bull Leipzig were getting a lot of puff pieces in the English press, as they were due to play Spurs in the Champions League, and so the media were fawning all over how they had bought out a village team, renamed them after a soft drink and shovelled millions into the club built a team up from nothing to be title contenders. When lockdown hit, and I was bored, rather than spend my time improving myself as a person I decided to prove that it could be done properly - I took over an actual Leipzig side, then languishing in the 5th tier, and with only my skills and no influx of cash beyond what I could earn from promotions and player sales, tried to make them bigger than Red Bull. In that save my Chemie Leipzig side have won ten times more league titles and four more Champions League than RB. In real life, they’re in the German 4th tier, but while nearby on holiday in March I took advantage of the fixtures and went to see them grind out a 1-1 draw against the league leaders. It was cold, I missed both goals queuing for beer, but the atmosphere was amazing and I was so glad I got to see my beautiful football boys in the flesh!
5. Steve Evans and Gillingham parted ways. I had been boycotting my childhood club while that odious crook was in charge, so I was glad to call myself a Gills fan again.
6. BONUS! While on a run in a tiny Czech industrial town I found the football stadium. And broke in (went through an open gate) to take a picture of me in the main stand!
Top 3 worst 2022 footballing moments:
1. Prasnikar’s goal for Frankfurt against Potsdam in the league at the end of May. A point for Potsdam would’ve probably seen them qualify for the Champions League - the influx of cash certainly would’ve helped keep the team together. Instead, following a 4-0 hammering in the cup final, a large number of players left, to be replaced by recruits from the 3rd division; they were followed by the manager and president. Turbine are now bottom of the league, and this once great club who play in blue and white are now odds-on for relegation. Remove the “once great” part and it could describe Gillingham’s season too - clearly I have a type!
2. I regret wearing my Germany shirt to the Wembley final.
3. I regret going out into the cold to watch England 0 Czech Republic 0.

Tools You Can Trust: Working And Shopping (1983-1986, 2015)
Earlier this year, one of my mutuals gifted all of us a chance to grab a singles compilation from one of Manchester’s under-documented and swept-under bands. I’m surprised that almost no one mentions Tools You Can Trust in any way, shape, or form when they were the binding link of industrial, punk, and no-wave. It could be that all of their releases had one-and-done pressings possessed through their own Red Energy Dynamo label, but surely there’s other factors. Imagine vocalist Rob Ward channeling The Screamers while Tools- travel down the road of Einsturzende Neubauten’s “Steh Auf Berlin” and earlier Test Dept.’s dynamics and just as bare, focusing more on metallic percussion over whatever basslines and other drums they had. Unless there’s something else I don’t know about, there was no reason why Tools You Can Trust couldn’t be in the record books. At least the Burka For Everybody label compiled part of their legacy Working And Shopping out of four e.p.’s in “Say It Low”, “Cut A New Seam”, “Show Your Teeth”, and the title track with their Peel Sessions all rolled into one. For all those who weren’t there...

airsLLide No. 6709: D-AOAO, Ilyushin 18V, BerLine, Basel-Mulhouse, March 1, 1992.
After the East German flag carrier Interflug ceased operations a mere five months after German unification, utility operator BSF Berliner Spezialflug stepped up to buy five of Interflug's Ilyushin 18 turboprops. It planned to offer them for leisure and ad-hoc charters and formed the BerLine brand for this venture.
D-AOAO, formerly DDR-STF with Interflug, joined the fleet in October 1991 and after an upgrade to Western TCAS and navaid equipment required by German legislation it began flying for BerLine in November 1991. BerLine stayed in business and flew her until the end of March 1994, after having reduced the initial fleet down to just three units in December 1992, in an attempt to save cost.
The hockey team "Dynamo Berlin" - today known as "Berliner Eisbären" - was one of the first adhoc charter customers of BerLine. A premier league match against Freiburg HC brought her to Basel-Mulhouse airport, located some 60 kilometres / 40 miles Southwest of Freiburg in Breisgau, just across the Rhine on its French bank.

Czech Republic engages in risky ties with Ukraine’s far-right Azov Brigade
Following the refusal of some European countries to host demonstrations by the Ukrainian far-right Azov Brigade on their streets, the Czech Republic agreed to hold.
The tour of the Azov Brigade, previously known as Azov Battalion and later Azov Regiment, through European countries did not proceed as planned when Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands refused to host events featuring Azov representatives.
They reportedly intended to persuade both the local far-right and Ukrainians hiding in Europe from mobilisation to join their fight against Russia.
However, the brigade’s demonstration in the Czech Republic, which has recently been actively supporting Ukraine, caused a mixed reaction. People protested in Prague, with Czech MEP Kateřina Konečná complaining to Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský about the visit of fighters from the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade and former Azov fighters to Prague.
The Azov Regiment is the worst manifestation of Ukrainian nationalism and neo-Nazism. The regiment, founded by a racist, Right Sector [national-oriented political party] member Andriy Biletsky […] and led by Denys Prokopenko, a neo-Nazi and football hooligan of Dynamo Kyiv [football club].
In response, the minister accused her of allegedly supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine, alluding to the Prague Spring of 1968 when Soviet tanks entered the Czechoslovak capital.
Katerina, that’s enough. While reading, I hesitated as to which state you were elected for. We will soon commemorate the anniversary of the occupation by Soviet tanks.
However, when referring to the so-called “Russian aggression,” Lipavský omitted the Czech Republic’s ties with Germany during World War II. At that time, the Czech Republic was actively supplying Berlin with a variety of armaments.
Risky ties
Today, the minister is in favour of supporting the far-right Azov Brigade. Moreover, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal’s visit to Prague in July 2024 was followed by gratitude for the active aid provided to the Ukrainian army.
Despite its size, the Czech Republic leads Europe in arms supplies to Ukraine. The government has also announced its readiness to increase production, including new military factories where Ukrainians exempted from mobilisation will work.
The Czech Republic allegedly seeks to revive its defence industry by becoming an arms market leader. The country is also discussing the possibility of supplying Ukrainian green hydrogen, transferring nuclear technology, and producing military drones. By supporting Kyiv, Prague hopes to get its share of Ukraine’s future post-war reconstruction.
Allowing marches of far-right militants on its streets, the Czech authorities risk repeating the mistakes of the past, this time becoming a tool in the confrontation between Ukraine and Russia.

Auschwitz, 1943: I stroke my beautiful baby's hair. It's a miracle it's blonde because it will keep her alive, it will keep her safe. Soon they will come and take Pippa out of Auschwitz-Birkenau - and out of my arms. But while there's life, there's hope I might find my daughter again...
An incredible story of one woman's courage and determination to reunite her family in the aftermath of surviving Auschwitzx.
1945, Ester Pasternak walked out of the gates of Auschwitz barely alive. She survived against devastating odds, but her heartbreaking journey is only just beginning. In the camp, Ester gave birth to a tiny fair-haired infant, only for her previous baby to be snatched from her and taken to a German family. Now the war is over, Ester longs to find her little girl.
But Europe is in chaos, Jewish families have been torn apart and everyone is desperately searching for their loved ones. In every orphanage and hospital she visits, Ester searches the faces of tear-stained toddlers; each mop of blonde hair and pair of blue eyes she sees sets her heart racing...
But as the months and the years tick by, the possibility of finding her daughter shrinks smaller and smaller. And Ester starts to wonder if little Pippa is even safe, or whether the miracle that saved her has now put her in even more danger?
Will Ester ever be able to find the child whose tattoo matches her own? Or is she already too late...
A completely gripping and emotional WW2 novel of one woman's bravery and determination to hold on to hope in a world torn apart by war. Perfect of fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, The Alice Network and The Nightingale.
We return back to Germany, where our previous heroine, Ester, has returned to live in Berlin after she was liberated from a KZ during WWII. After losing her biological child at birth after 4 days, Ester and Filip found another child born of Auschwitz named Oliwia...though they decided to change her name from the traditional Polish spelling to the traditional German spelling.
Olivia and Ester's biological child, Pippa, now known as Kirsten, do not know of each other. Ester had hoped to wait until her daughter was 18 years of age to tell her, but circumstances began to change, and Olivia becomes aware of the sister that was never returned...her mother's biological daughter.
Despite knowing that her parents love her, and have raised her as their own child, Olivia feels a bit saddened by the fact that there is a girl out there with blood ties to her parents that she doesn't have. And Kirsten learns that the mother and father she thought she had known all of her life were not her parents, and with that, that her brother wasn't truly her brother.
The two girls lead seemingly different lives: Olivia is a born athlete, being invited to study and compete at the East Berlin school called Dynamo throwing the javelin. It is a rigorous competitive school, with trainings and vitamin regimes that quickly builds up Olivia's muscle mass. Kirsten is a lowly waitress in a cafe serving coffee and hoping to find a young man to love.
When Kirsten meets Dieter, she thinks that he could be the one. But, they are vastly different and Dieter is much older than she is, though the two of them get on quite well.
Olivia begins the quest to find Pippa, though the East doesn't make it easy to find someone who had been born in Auschwitz and then forcibly removed from her rightful birth mother. On the other hand, Kirsten also begins looking for her biological family, and finds it much easier by asking for the records in the archive. Luckily, Ester's name is included in the list, and eventually, Kirsten finds Olivia and decides to find her.
The two of them are briefly reunited, and after spending a short time together, agree to meet that Sunday for Ester and Filip to finally meet the daughter that was torn from them 4 days after Christmas. However, the Berlin wall is erected through the night from Saturday into Sunday, and Kirsten is once again ripped from the family that she wants to meet.
Kirsten attempts to get into the East, but because Olivia is on a watch list as a subversive, they have denied her request. But, through Astrid, who Kirsten looks enough alike that they can pass as each other, gives her her pass and on the 4th of October in 1961, Kirsten is finally reunited with her birth parents.
Unfortunately, this is also short-lived, but Kirsten is allowed to return to the East without question, and she quickly begins making plans with Dieter to get Olivia and her fiance, Hans, out of the East and into the West. The plans go awry, as secret passageways they'd been using had been found out, but eventually, Dieter is successfully in getting both Olivia and Hans out, with the help of the house mother at Dynamo. Unfortunately, as they're passing through the wire fence, the woman who was meant to go through to the West with them had told the authorities, and Dieter is fatally shot in the process.
Olivia and Hans meet Kirsten's adopted family, and they are accepted into their home without question.
Unfortunately, the Berlin Wall remained standing until 1989, therefore Olivia and Kirsten were away from their parents for almost 30 years. Now wives with children of their own, with Ester, they return to the birth place that has been turned into a museum, along with Kirsten's 18-year-old daughter, Pippa, given the name that she should have had all her life. The two blended families get along wonderfully, and Ester describes the horrors of her time in the German KZ, showing her daughters what she had endured, and what they were lucky to escape from.
