My Thoughts and Feeling on The Blackening
The movie The Blackening was such an enjoyable and thrilling movie for me to watch. I originally watched the movie right when it came out in June of last year, and I remember laughing in my seat while also being on the edge of my seat the whole time. When the professor mentioned movies made for Black people by Black people, I instantly thought of this movie and was curious to see if we would ever discuss it. Sure enough, I looked at the syllabus and saw that we would watch and discuss it. I was utterly excited and looking forward to a rewatch as I only remembered the movie’s main plot but not the details. I loved seeing this movie take stereotypical characters, such as the gay best friend, and add depth and an expansion to that character and stereotype to the point where they eventually unravel it all together, showing off the complexity of each character.
An aspect of the movie that I originally didn’t pick up on was the reversal of the “hero” in the story. Often, in horror movies, the strong male protagonist either protects and saves everyone or is the one left standing. In this movie, the King and Nnamdi aren’t the story’s main heroes, but the women take center stage. It was Lisa and Allison, not King or Namdi, who ultimately ended up killing the twins in the masks. They both show their strength and release their anger and frustrations of being victimized and put in this nightmare of a situation through their murder of the men. In many movies, especially horror movies, Black women are never depicted as heroes, and it was refreshing to see them portrayed, respected, and applauded in this movie for their heroics and actions.
I also enjoyed seeing the characters have an actual survival instinct and either fight or turn away from the danger, instead of acting clueless or freezing up like countless horror movies do. It felt like an accurate portrayal, without all the comedic elements, of what Black people would actually act like in a horror movie due to their intergenerational survival instincts that I could relate to as a person of color.
A small detail that I loved about this movie that I picked up on both times I had watched the movie was the fact that Clifton was the only character to have an Android, further showing his divide and differences from the group but also knowing the fact that villains in movies aren’t allowed to show themselves having iPhones, made this intricate detail, a device for foreshadowing. Another detail that I really appreciated that I actually didn’t notice until this rewatch was the fact that Clifton’s board game piece, which is supposed to be an accurate representation of each character, was a dice, showing that he was actually playing a game within the game considering the big reveal of him being the mastermind behind the whole horrific night.
Overall, this film was such a joy to watch. I loved how they portrayed complex Black characters, emphasized that community and solidarity were the keys to their success, and actually ended with this complex Black group of friends surviving due to their love and desire to help one another.

The Blackening Review- I'm Not the Audience For this Movie
Tim Story is a director whose been around for a while. He’s a director who has done comic book movies, and romantic comedies and now he is delving into the horror and comedy genres. He is working with Lisa Byers and one of his actors Dewayne Perkins who wrote the script. The story focuses mainly on a group of Black Americans which should be right up the angle of Story and all the others

This week, I finally watched The Blackening for the first time, and it really surprised me. I’m not usually drawn to horror, but this film effortlessly blends horror and comedy in a way that kept me engaged. It’s one of the Black horror films I’ve seen recently that I genuinely enjoyed.
I even had the chance to virtually meet Dwayne Perkins, the co-writer and one of the stars, during a lecture at UCLA. Hearing him talk about the creation of the film, along with the backstories and inspirations behind it, was such a unique experience. It gave so much more meaning to the movie to me.
The movie takes place on Juneteenth and the movie is a celebration of Black history, but at the same time it is very cleverly dealing with more serious issues. I loved how it subverts typical horror tropes, especially the idea of the "Black savior". In a scene, a white ranger gets killed while trying to rescue the group—this moment highlights the underlying fear and distrust many in the Black community feel toward authority.
There is another scene towards the end where instead of calling the police the characters call the firemen, who eventually use their fire hoes on the characters. This scene carries significant weight for the people who know about the historical violence inflicted by firefighters during the Civil Rights era.
One thing I really liked about the movie is that it has all these female protagonists, but they're all very reluctant heroines. This dynamic is especially evident in Lisa’s character, whose aggression reflects the exhausting pressures she feels to be strong, even when she doesn’t want to be.
Perkins does a very good job at breaking down stereotypes, even for biracial characters. The inclusion of this category however does raise some serious questions about identity and acceptance in the Black community. The scene where Clifford forces the group to determine who is “the blackest” for them to survive is intense and thought-provoking. That is such a great description of being stuck in between identities.
Clifford’s character embodies the struggle many black people face when feeling disconnected from their own culture. His rejection of his identity leads to tragic consequences, highlighting the dangers of not feeling accepted.
What I particularly enjoyed was the film’s humor. The comedic timing was spot-on, and it provided a much-needed balance to the horror elements. I actually laughed at some points when I wasn't expecting to, so the tension wasn't too bad. This blend of humor with deeper themes is something I really appreciate in films, as it allows for reflection without feeling overwhelmed.

Can confirm Boston sports fans in general are some of the most insufferable fucking people you'll ever meet.
But let's not forget the teams themselves.
For one thing, the old heads who were on the 08 team won't shut the fuck up about the one ring that they won. The takes they spew are garbage and because they're "former champs" they get to plaster it all over ESPN and FS1 (looking at you, Perkins.) Dude hates on euro players for no reason (Its racism actually but shhhh) amongst a litany of other awful takes. Paul Pierce is a regular guest on Skip Bayless' sports talk show and he makes Skip's vile takes even worse at times. He also says he had a better career than Dwayne Wade and even as a Certified hater of the 2012 Heatles, Paul Pierce is unequivocally wrong.
The current Celtics team have always choked in the postseason and yet sports media and Boston fans wants to always tout them as a god squad (even though they kind of are despite the weenie hut Jr run through the playoffs this year. Whoever let KP AND Jrue Holiday go to the Celtics should be jailed for malpractice)
But yeah. Fuck the Celtics.
I’ve only ever followed the WNBA and only started watching the NBA this season so i’m still tryna catch up on stuff
why does everyone hate the Boston Celtics 😭
what a QUESTION!
me? i’m a hating ass bitch
well first of all celtics fans are just wrong. audacity to call themselves a dynasty when their last ring was in 2008. both the other franchises that call themselves dynasties (lakers and warriors) have both won consistently in the past and won a ring in the last four years.
also the majority of celtics fans (not nivi and not my anon) are some of the most awful fucking ppl ever. they are racist, sexist, homophobic, all the shit. FUCK celtics fans bro

THIRST AID KIT | S6E06 | BIM’S THIRST 123s
So!
Tumblr media
It was Bim’s turn to delve into the roots of her thirst habits — and as the opening gif of this post suggests, it turned out to be a journey through TV and film.
Besides the large-nosed Dr Luka Kovač (aka Goran Viơnjić) in ER, Bim grew up, like Ashley Banks, with a very big thing for Tevin ‘Little T’ Campbell. Watching Tevin sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Ashley on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was...a mild awakening.
youtube
Adorable!
From Bel-Air it was a short hop to the fictional HBCU of Hillman in A Different World. There, Bim fell in deep love with Dwayne Wayne. Have you ever seen a more devoted boyfriend? Kadeem Hardison did something so flippin’ special with that character, and indelibe example of what love could look like and how it might make you feel. To this day, a sweet but devoted nerd who wears spectacles always hits Bim right in the feels.
Tumblr media
Ugh, feels!
There was a whole Pacey Witter element too, but you know we already covered all that in our Joshua Jackson episode, so no need to go into it here!
Tween and teen thirst got gradually ramped up until it landed Bim at the door of David Addison, aka king of the wryly twisted smirk, duke of the wisecrack that stayed the right side of tasteless, and most importantly, foundational mover of Bim’s... heart. Moonlighting is one of the shows Bim wanted to live inside of and David Addison is the basis of the appeal of a smart-mouthed man who is tender and smart and can throw a mean left hook as required. Whew. (Bruce Willis also eased Bim into a lifelong love of a bald man, just FYI. 👀)
Tumblr media
And of course, as noted Bim’s love of a Strong Nose is maybe down to Dr. Luka Kovač but ALSO very much down to David Duchovny, because Bim fell for him watching not The X-Files but the decidedly lowbrow Red Shoe Diaries. Thirst is complex, but David’s nose —full on, or in profile — is two things precisely: splendid and able. đŸ„”Â

The original drabbles in Fanfic Wars were good this week, y’all. Like... some-of-our-best-work good. You can listen to the whole episode RIGHT HERE (more ways to listen are listed below).
SOME THINGS TO WATCH AND READ, IF YOU LIKE!
This great 2019 interview with Tevin Campbell
Bim personally has no need of this defense of the Whitley/Dwayne relationship, but you know, some people’s opinions are just wrong.
The “baby, please!” heard around the world đŸ„°

2020: The Year in Cannibalism
2020 assailed us with fires, floods, famine and pestilence (both the pandemic and political varieties). The power of nature was demonstrated in several forms: in the massive power of storms, floods and fires, and the microscopically small virus that crippled the world economy and killed (probably well over) 1,700,000 people (so far). Our faith in being the masters of this planet and the
