So, About Dune Part 2,

Well, they did it. They pulled it off. They successfully adapted Dune. The sci-fi equivalent of The Silmarillion has appeared in its entirety on the big screen for all the masses to see.

This film is technically perfect. The writing is on point, the sets, costumes, and CGI remain as stunning as they were in Part 1, Zendaya fully demonstrates her skills as a serious actress, and the original plot is done justice.

However, there are some aspects of the delivery that do prevent me from completely raving here. First of all, near the final act, it begins to feel very rushed. It almost feels like, especially given the already three-hour runtime, this film should have once more been split in two, in order to spend more time developing other elements of the plot. As part of this issue, past a certain point it feels like the film makers are focusing less on showing the dramatic conclusion of the book and more on setting things up so they can make an adaptation of the second book (which is not as iconic as the first). This means that certain moments in the finale are not quite done justice.

Overall though, these problems are relatively minor, and what we have here is an absolutely stellar film. If you in any way enjoyed part one, go see this on the biggest screen you can.

So, About Dune,

If you've read the book or are willing to do some research you'll most likely love this movie. Otherwise you'll have to keep a very, very, very open mind if you don't want to be disappointed.

Let me open by saying that this is not Star Wars, or Alien, or any of those nice little pieces of easily-digestible storytelling that Hollywood passes off as sci-fi. This is Dune, an adaptation of a book written in the 1960s when literary science fiction was at the height of its intellectualism and complexity. From a layman's perspective, the book is the Shakespeare of sci-fi.

Now, this movie is a perfect adaptation of the first act of said Shakespeare, which of course means that if you expect anything remotely similar to those neat little Hollywood stories you will be disappointed. There are no tractor beams or laser-swords or cheesy comic-book villains (disclaimer: I am not insulting Star Wars. I actually like Star Wars, I am simply making it painfully clear that if you want to watch Star Wars you shouldn't be watching Dune). No, this is a film about political plots, sowing the seeds of change, and galactic intrigue with all the action consolidated strictly to the third act. In short, it exactly the sort of sci-fi I fear most cinema-goers will not have the patience for.

Now that we've established exactly what sort of movie this is, let me get into the actual review. As someone who has read the book, I loved every second of it. Many who have read the book consider Dune to be fundamentally unadaptable for a variety of reasons (especially considering the numerous failed attempts) but somehow this film pulled it off. Everything is lovingly portrayed almost exactly to the letter. Sure, scenes are cut and dialog is changed here and there, but such things have to be done. There will simply never be a better adaptation of the first act of Dune (how they handle the other two acts remains to be seen).

My one concern is that it might actually be too accurate to the book in a way. I fear most average cinema-goers will be watching this movie simply because it's a blockbuster and go in expecting a rip-roaring action adventure (which we've established could not be further from the truth). Because of that, the film may ultimately bomb preventing us from ever seeing Part 2.

Regardless, here's to the first good adaptation of Dune. Let us hope we get Part 2 soon, and that it maintains this stellar quality.

In this household, in this cinema, we stand David Lynch's Dune.

Don't get me wrong however.

"Dune: Part 1" and "Dune: Part 2" are great movies. There's no but in that statement, they really are, and they deserve all the love and praise they're getting. That doesn't mean we have to dismiss the Lynch version.

It's a bummer it gets such a bad rep. It's not unwarranted, don't get me wrong. There is a lot of problems with that movie, but I love it all the same. Warts and all.

Also "Children of Dune" is a great mini-series, and in my opinion it's severely underrated. Nobody remembers that one, only me.

Home for spring break and just watched Dune: Part Two with my dad and our conversation after the movie was so ridiculous it was like,

My dad: I don't think Paul actually did anything wrong though. Like the Fremen want to be free he's freeing them

Guess who finally watched Dune Part II :D

Ya'll, this movie sigle-handedly made me realize again just how much I love movies. It was so fucking awesome. Every littel Part about it

Let's start with the acting. And Oh boy, Every single actor and actress did their job perfectly. Everything felt so real. The Moment Paul drank the Water of Life??? You could literally see how he changed, how he embraced the fact that he is the Lissan Al-Gaib, the acting was literally perfect. And then there is freaking Austin Butler

This man has portrayed Feyd-Rautha so perfectly. When I read the Book, that was literally how I imagined him, it was awesome

Talking of Feyd-Rautha, the fight scene between him and Paul??? It was so good, my jaw literallly dropped when I saw it. The moment they stabbed each other being a reference to Part I where Gurney and Paul trained together, just chefs kiss.

Also, hear me out on Lady Jessica. I was so exited to see her become the Sayyadina. That transition from being a loving Mother to an Almost cult-like religous leader that pushes Paul into a direction of her wishes. It was portrayed beautifully. Let alone her character and Costume design. It was breathtaking.

Another thing that really blew my mind again, was the Soundtrack. Seriously, who let Hans Zimmer cook this hard?? The Soundtrack was literally one of the reasons I was so exited for Part II and was not dissapointed.

Let's also not forget the Scene where Paul rode on Shai Hulud for the first time. My jaw was literally on the Floor the entire Time. That was also one of the scenes, I was most exited for and man, I wanted to stand up and clap after it because it was so fucking awesome. The fact alone that the Fremen ride on the Sandworms has me giddy like a little kid.

And of course, the End, the beginning of the holy war. I must admit, I have not read past the first Book yet, but I am most exited to start now and I really hope that the Franchise gets continued. The final scenes just had so much power in them, you could almost feel the tension in the air, with Paul becoming the Emporer and leading the Fremen into battle. It was just mind-blowing.
