Old Town Clovis, CA (No. 5)

The lumber mill burned in 1914 and was not rebuilt. The grounds are now occupied by Clark Intermediate School and the Clovis Rodeo Grounds. Clovis has a long history as a western town known for its slogan, "Clovis – A Way of Life". Since 1914, the Clovis Rodeo has been held on the last weekend in April, with a parade on Saturday morning, followed by the rodeo that afternoon and all day Sunday. Also contributing to the "Clovis way of life" are a number of street festivals, including Big Hat Days, ClovisFest, and the weekly Friday Night Farmer's Market held between mid-May and mid-September every year.

The last surviving structure built by the railroad is a depot now located near the site of the original Clovis Station. The earliest photos, from about 1910, show the depot situated in front of the Tarpey winery south of the intersection of Ashlan and Clovis Avenues. In 1999 it was moved to its present location in the town's center, at the northeast corner of Clovis Avenue and Fourth Street, and was restored by the Clovis Big Dry Creek Historical Society with financing, labor, and materials donated by local businesses and contractors.

Marcus Pollasky was a lawyer, born in Michigan, living in Chicago just before he came to Fresno. Throughout his life he tried to create several projects similar to the SJVRR, including projects in Eureka, California, Virginia, Michigan, and Oklahoma. Few were ever actually built. In 1896, Pollasky sued Collis P. Huntington in Los Angeles courts over the money he lost in Fresno, "while engaged in a joint venture with the defendant, Huntington". It has long been speculated that Pollasky was an agent of the Southern Pacific, and this "joint venture" suit seems to prove that point.

Many buildings in the town core have been renovated. Older storefronts on Clovis Avenue, the main street running through town, have been restored and new buildings have been designed with facades that resemble those found in the early 20th century. The historic center has been reborn as "Old Town Clovis".

Week 244: Friday, June 7th, Terran's Pre-School Graduation! He's growing up so fast! We celebrated at Stock Farm Children's Center with Ms. Hermione and all of Sheep in a Jeep! Then we drove up to Sonoma County to go glamping at Wildhaven, 2411 Alexander Valley Road, Healdsburg. On Saturday, June 8th we grabbed a picnic lunch from the Dry Creek General Store, 3495 Dry Creek Rd, and ate it by the lovely vineyards at aesthete winery & farms, 5610 Dry Creek Road followed by feeding the goats. Afterwards we went swimming in the Russian River!!!

Winter time in Healdsburg. There’s a lot of meat on that bone. While most of the visitors to our region come during the summer and fall months, here's a PRO TIP: come during the winter. During the cold months when all the wines are barreled down for their winter hibernation, the winemaking community avails itself to a season of eating and drinking, a season of reflection and introspection, and a general sense of well being. Winter is a great time to visit local wineries and downtown Healdsburg tasting rooms. The party usually moves indoors, but there are now several high design tasting rooms in town that you'll want to add to your Instagram feed.

Just 10 years ago, Healdsburg was a very seasonal town and many would shutter their businesses in the winter. Not so anymore. Now the visitors-in-the-know come and taste the best Sonoma, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the local tasting rooms, often poured by the vintners themselves. That’s something else that’s great about the winter time--the principles are often up in the mix!

Here’s a sample itinerary for a winter visit to Healdsburg: Check into one of the local hotels (which will be offering winter rates!). Hit a couple of the local Tasting Room‘s like Lioco or Bloodroot or Marine Layer--all specialize in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Then it’s a short drive out to the wine country. The Dry Creek Valley is where you're headed. Stop for lunch at the Dry Creek General Store which has been there since the late 1800s and has a classic California old-timey feel to it. Then a tasting appointment at Reeve which is beautiful to the max. You might venture a little further out to UNTI winery for some killer Cal-Ital wines. Then it’s back to town for happy hour at Burdock--the new darling in town for amazing craft cocktails. For dinner, there are lots of great options these days. Our current favorites are Troubadour (classic French food + tasting menu), and Lo & Behold (casual bar menu).

If you’re still feeling spunky and have one more in you, you might cap the evening with a digestif at the rooftop above the Matheson, with full views of the plaza below. Make sure you hydrate before bed!
