White Mist
A ridiculously clean, vibrant version of the variety, which–as usual with Sauvignon Blanc–causes me to ponder the oft-levied question: How much alleged varietal-correctness (we have somewhat erroniously learned to accept) is required in a sauv-blanc before it’s just a “nice, smooth, beautiful, white wine”? This all goes back–of course–to a *gathering* of accepted pyrazine nuances the common…

Where to Find Memento Mori (Updated 9/11/2024)
On August 13, two days before 광복절 (Korean National Liberation Day), my debut novel was released. The book is about Korean-American family, and also about Greek mythology, and I promise this combination makes sense in the end. (For those who are curious, I wrote an uncharacteristically personal guest post for Women's Writers, Women's Books on the topic of what inspired me to write a Eurydice and Orpheus retelling about my Korean grandmother.)
It was surreal to go to a store the other day and see it on a table next to Salman Rushdie and other acclaimed writers. After 13 years of this story existing in some form, I'm so excited that this book is finally out—both because it is a beautiful book that I am proud of and that I hope you enjoy, and also because I would love to stop being my own publicist (it is VERY awkward).
So here is an omnibus post of book-related info that I will keep updated and pinned going forward to finally give the memento mori tag a rest. Below the cut, you will find a running list of indie bookstores and public libraries that I know carry my book. (If you have a New York Public Library card and have 5 minutes, I will love you forever if you would email your local branch to ask them to carry my book, thus fulfilling my lifelong dream of living in the NYPL.)
Also below are a few upcoming events at which I have been invited to speak!

Dr. Ida Louise Jackson (October 12, 1902 – March 8, 1996) was an educator and philanthropist. She graduated from the UC Berkeley. As one of 17 African American students, she prioritized creating safe spaces for African American community members. She was invested in a teaching career, specifically in Oakland. She became the first African American woman to teach high school in the state of California. Her ambitions were rooted in giving back to her community in Mississippi. She returned to her home state in 1935 to develop programs around education and health care for poor, rural African Americans. Her contributions were celebrated by UC Berkeley, which named their first graduate apartment housing unit in her honor.
She was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She was the daughter of Pompey Jackson and Nellie Jackson. Her father was a pastor and farmer. Her mother was born in New Orleans. She was one of eight children but was the youngest child and their only girl.
She worked to bring the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to campus. She co-founded the Rho Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She earned a BA in Education, Vocational Guidance, and Counseling. She applied for a teaching position in the Oakland Public Schools, only to be told by the administration that she was still not qualified. She earned an MA from UC Berkeley.
She furthered her studies at Columbia University pursuing an Ed.D. She returned to Berkeley to seek the Administrative Credential to be certified by the State of California as a School Administrator. By 1936, she was certified.
In 1934, She became the national Alpha Kappa Alpha president. She co-founded and became general director of the Mississippi Health Project. She served as the Dean of Women at the Tuskegee Institute (1937-38). She was involved in the NAACP, the YWCA, and the National Council of Negro Women. She returned to McClymonds High School where she taught until her retirement in 1953. She transitioned to running her family’s sheep ranch in Mendocino County. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #alphakappaalpha

FLP CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY: AGE BRINGS THEM HOME TO ME by windflower
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/age-brings-them-home-to-me-by-windflower/
windflower lives on the beautiful California Mendocino Coast with her wife, border collie and mini aussie, on unceded ancestral land of the Pomo people. She co-founded the Feminist Arts Program at the University of Massachusetts Women’s Center where she published and edited, Chomo Uri, a women’s multi-arts magazine and produced the first National Women’s Poetry Festival in 1976. Her poetry has been published in numerous journals and anthologies, including international publications.
windflower is also a photographer celebrating the #poetry in #nature.
PRAISE FOR AGE BRINGS THEM HOME TO ME by windflower
This is a beautiful book, written by a contemplative and generous poet with a musician’s ear and a photographer’s eye. The metaphors sprinkled throughout—“Tiny tongues of sand,” “moist chiffon of fog,” “lips of clothespins,” “skirt of the ocean.”—all add up to a rich and sensual reading experience. The sound and rhythm of lines such as “Make me your summer lullaby” and “our waterbed a boat in its own warm harbor” beg to be read aloud and simply made me swoon. In the last section of the book, the poems widen into a provocative and intelligent exploration of social justice; the poem, “My First History Lesson” alone is worth the price of admission. This book is both soothing and exciting and these poems will stay with me for a very long time. All in all, a very profound reading experience.
–Lesléa Newman, author of the dual memoir-in-verse, I Carry My Mother and I Wish My Father
Here is a book about loss and connection – written with the power and imagination of an accomplished poet who invests the feminine spirit with love, power, grace and redemption. She traces love from the blue found in her grandmother’s hands through the wisps of blue that brush across the sky and lands in the cornflower color of her wife’s eyes.
Here is a woman who has found a cathedral in nature that blesses her with endless images: beauty, joy, pain, and love with a depth that illumines all parts of the poet’s life and yet at the climax, skillfully brings us into the crushing tragedy of the murder of three civil rights workers.
Here is a poet who follows a path of vowels and consonants down to the ocean, who won’t let hope slip away with the king tides: It is the women who look up at the sky and see their children nestled in the moon. It is the women who hem the skirt of the ocean.
–Elizabeth Kirkpatrick-Vrenios, author of Special Delivery and Empty the Ocean with a Thimble

NEW PLAYLIST: WAITING FOR THE SUN
In 1996, St. Martin's Press published a book called Waiting For The Sun by a British writer named Barney Hoskyns. The book is the single best history I've ever read about the California music scene. It spans 50 years, and covers everything from the Jazz of the 1940s to the Hip-Hop of the 90s. But the major portion of the book focuses on the Rock and Pop scenes of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.
I enjoyed the book so much that I put together a 90 minute mix tape of music discussed in the book. A couple of years later, with a CD burner handy, I expanded the original to a double CD that featured 38 tracks, and more than 150 minutes of music. I was so happy with the result that I wrote a letter to Rhino Records and proposed they issue a boxed set based on the book in co-operation with the author. I even sent them my track list as a starting point. Of course I never heard from them, and my hopes for a boxed set were dashed.
Here we are a couple of decades later, and we have playlists, and streaming services available. So, I thought I'd share with you the best mix tape / burned CD set I ever made. I still think Rhino missed an opportunity. See if you agree. After you listen to it, you really should read the book. It's the cheapest ticket you'll ever find for that West Coast trip you always dreamed of taking.
Here's the track list, and it should be listened to in the order given here. I spent almost as much time sequencing it as I did picking the songs - all of which spotlight some aspect, and some of the history of the Golden State.

OMG so lovely. The beautiful, crisp decadence of a ridiculously structured white Rhone. From Alder Springs, of course. Just stunningly bitter and butter and beset with all the things you look for in a wine that isn’t Chardonnay. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. A blend of gold only 12% Viognier for that pure Marsanne and Roussanne expression. A more perfect wine could not be imagined…

HALL Wines, St. Helena (No. 1)
Since first working in her family’s Mendocino vineyards, Kathryn Hall dreamed of a place to showcase fine wines alongside expressive art and masterful architecture. Now, Kathryn and Craig Hall are creating an unrivalled destination in the Napa Valley - where winemaking excellence and innovation meets contemporary design to celebrate life and inspire the senses.
The Halls acquired the historic St. Helena Bergfeld Winery in 2003 and re-opened as HALL St. Helena in July of that year. With a rich history spanning 150 years, HALL St. Helena’s location was once the home of the Napa Valley Co-Op, producing 40% of Napa Valley’s wines. In 2013, The Hall family completed the restoration of the 1885 Bergfeld Winery and merged history and innovation with the completion of California’s first LEED® Gold Certified winery, in addition to a stunning Visitor Center and state-of-the-art gravity flow winemaking facility.

Konopie indyjskie i energia z PV.
Obecnie w USA 33 stany zalegalizowały medyczną marihuanę, a 10 stanów i dystrykt Kolumbia dopuszcza zażywanie marihuany do celów rekreacyjnych.
3 etapy uprawy konopi
Siew nasion, roślinność i okres kwitnienia.
Wg różnych szacunków do uprawy tylko czterech sadzonek konopi indyjskich potrzeba równowartości energii potrzebnej do zasilenia aż 29 lodówek Side by Side. Żeby zapewnić optymalne warunki do wzrostu roślin inwestor musi korzystać z zaawansowanych systemów HVAC w celu zachowania kontroli poziomu wilgotności, dwutlenku węgla i temperatury.
Nowy trend w uprawie konopi - fotowoltaika z magazynem energii

Sir Douglas Quintet - 01 Mendocino (HQ)

Having been away from the US charts since 1966 they came back with this. Also unusual that their follow ups were of a Cajun sound despite the fact Doug Sahm and co were Texan.

Award-winning Mime Troupe Spotlights San Francisco’s Homelessness Crisis
Founded over six decades ago, the Tony-Awarded San Francisco Mime Troupe has always been at the forefront of the pulse of the City and the issues of the day. SFMT opens its 64th season on July 1 with a new musical called: “Breakdown - Sometimes it’s not all just happening in your mind.”
Directed by Michael Gene Sullivan, Breakdown features a five-person cast, with original music & lyrics by Daniel Savio.
The musical reflects what is currently happening in San Francisco as homelessness continues amid a stressed-out economy from the COVID-19 pandemic and rising inflation. The story/plot of this musical is how can we help those struggling with actual mental illness? And who is driving the country insane?
The main character, portrayed by Kina Kantor is a homeless woman named Yume. She lives on the San Francisco streets of an increasingly intolerant urban landscape. Yet that doesn’t mean all her issues can be solved by a passionate social worker, named Saidia, portrayed by Alicia M.P. Nelson.
In the City “by The Bay” San Francisco seems to have more bureaucracy and paperwork than compassion. Help is always just around the Kafkaesque labyrinthine corner!
But that doesn’t mean San Francisco is the hellhole of progressivism as an up-and-coming Fox News commentator, named Marcia Stone, portrayed by Jamella Cross, seeks to present San Francisco that way to the rest of the country.
As playwright/director Sullivan and music composer/lyricist Savio strive to illustrate…whether it’s an individual, a bureaucracy, or a national sanity, everything is headed for a…”Breakdown!”
While SFMT’s initial inspiration was and is rooted in mime, as Sullivan explained.
“We use the term ‘mime’ in its classical and original definition,” he said.
"The exaggeration of daily life in story and song." “It is a form of popular theater that is as old as the marketplace itself,” he said.
Similar to SFMT is Theatre in Paris, in France. Upon hearing the news about the upcoming 64th season and SFMT’s new musical, Carl de Poncins, one of the founders of Theatre in Paris agreed with Sullivan, saying…
“Yes…The history of mime relied on elaborate movement and gesture but also incorporating speech and some song.” Pointing to mime’s universality as an art form, de Poncins noted…
“variations of the practice also found their way into ancient aboriginal, Indian, and Japanese theatrical heritages, all of which feature performances that blend music and dance with a narrative told through a stylized gesture and facial expression.”
“The Japanese Noh tradition of masked theatre, in particular, is another example, said de Poncins, and Noh would go onto influence many contemporary French theorists of mime.”
Co-founders of Theatre in Paris, Christopher Plotard and Romaine Beytout, like de Poncins are very pleased and excited for SFMT as they present an entirely new production. Bringing live theatre directly to the people in public places such as parks is what they are all about. They applaud the work SFMT is doing.
Following much of the basic commedia dell'Arte format, SFMT revels in the ability for art to enhance and improve people’s lives. Adding further, Sullivan said. “From the ancient Greek and Roman farces to the Renaissance/Shakespearean era to modern Chinese Opera, we are using archetypes comically to illustrate people's issues.”
“This is a time honored worldwide tradition,” said Sullivan just as de Poncins mentioned. “Our broadly drawn characters are instantly recognizable allowing the audience to immediately engage in the action,” he said.
BREAKDOWN - A New Musical, opens July 1 at Cedar Rose Park in Berkeley and continues with a showing at Dolores Park in the Mission District on July 4. Shows will continue throughout the Bay Area in SF, Marin (Mill Valley), Ukiah (Mendocino), Cotati (Sonoma), East Bay, Palo Alto, Santa Cruz, San Jose, and Davis, until September 4.
All performances are free of charge unless otherwise listed. Some performances will require an RSVP.
