I made a youtube video a good few months ago about redesigning some of the DRV3 characters and here's the thing. Other than that more recent video, I hadn't posted on that channel in years. Also the most views any of my videos had ever gotten before that was, like, 52 views. But I went to check the DR video yesterday because I was showing it to someone and noticed that it had fucking OVER A THOUSAND VIEWS????

And I've been feeling more Danganronpa pilled recently so I kinda wanna maybe do another V3 character redesigns video. The first video was Tenko and Himeko because I can't bear to separate the girlfriends, so now I wanna do Maki and Tsumugi!

People who are good about analyzing this game's characters have been noting how Dan Heng has changed the way he interacts with his two besties over the course of the game. In this setting, he's not standing apart from them at all to protect or watch over them, he's chilling by their side, showing how relaxed he feels.

Dr. Primitive is honestly one of the more interesting mad scientists I've seen. He's got an interesting and fucked up philosophy that feels more magnanimous than just trauma. And he's not receptive to threats. He's very logical except for his emotions which are also in his opinion perfectly logical. It's interesting.

Final thoughts on this patch, after reading some reviews, getting some rest, and editing:

Never a dull moment when the dango trio are together. It was really great getting to have some fun times together with the besties again- it was honestly kind of a disappointment that Dan Heng was never with us for long on Penacony, so having him around for just this little bit was pretty nice. Also, very fun to see him be passionate about something and involve him in the protagonist's shenanigans.

Rappa felt like such a gag character at first (I'm old enough to remember the Pokemon kids from my high school) until we got to her backstory which went SUPER hard and hit like a truck.

Reca has issues. I like him. I still do feel a little disappointed that the whole "look at our villain, he's really fucked up" thing from the trailer was a massive bait and switch. I loved his writing though, and the full version of the film reel scene was INSANE.

But by far my favorite character in this patch is, believe it or not, Dr. Primitive. You saw so much of his philosophy on display within both Rappa's flashbacks and his conversations with the other characters, including the way he manipulates his minions. (And I forgot because I was just on autopilot for some of it, but yes also what kind of specimens really interest him a la Boothill.) Comparisons can definitely be drawn between him and Ruan Mei, both Genius Society members that really give 0 shits about what's good for the rest of the universe. For Genius Society lore enjoyers, this patch's going to be the subject of a lot of conversation.

I saw a lot of criticism on the story, and I'm inclined to agree with it. Not every patch can be a banger, but this one could have used an hour or two less of fluff. The reason the liveblog is so fast at the beginning and slows down by the end is honestly that I just got bored. Participating in every full detail of the villain's plot wasn't COMPLETELY necessary, y'know? This isn't a game like Ace Attorney where you need to know every little bit. Honestly, I had a headache doing all of this in three sessions, and seeing the same jokes and even plot points restated over and over did sort of get to me. I wouldn't say this soured my opinion of anything in the long run, just that I hope this much fluff in a filler patch won't be the way things go in the future. (The previous Xianzhou filler had MUCH better pacing.)

When she see’s they only scraped their knee she simply shakes her head

She helps them up and leads them to the bathroom by the hand

She gives them a cute little bandage with music notes on them 

To cheer her child up she starts playing their favorite song on the piano

(She can’t help but smile as they giggle and exclaim that they wanna learn how to make music too)

Angie Yonaga

When she hears her child crying she lets out a small prayer for their safety before locating them 

Once she finds them safe she lets out a small smile and hugs them 

She tells them to stop crying and instead they should give a small prayer to Atua that their wound wasn’t more severe!

When she sees no invention she sighs in relief and gives them a hug

After she bandages it she kisses the spot

To speed up the healing she says with a smile

Immediately runs to her child side when she hears then crying

(If anyone dare hurt then she will cut a bitch)

When she notices that it’s only a cut on their knee she sighs in relief

“Let’s get that clean shall we?”

She picks them up gracefully and takes them to the bathroom where she cleans the wound and puts a bandage on it

She makes sure to explain that yes will the disinfectant hurts that it helps clean the wound and is necessary

She has a calm look on her face as she looks for her child

(She knows from experience that children will cry from anything)

Once she notices the wound she lets out a small sigh and picks them up

“What trouble did you get into this time hmm?”

As they mumble their action she bandages up the wound and gives them a kiss on the cheek

They nod and they go back to playing

Immediately springs into action (and probably busts down a door in the process)

Looks around for danger but when she sees her child only feel and hurt themselves she can;t help but smile

She helps her child up and tells them not to cry over their wound

Since experience wounds like this will only make them stronger

As she walks them over to the bathroom she explains that her herself has gotten wounded many times while training

She makes sure to properly bangae the wound and sends them back outside with a smile on their face

Tsumigi Shirogane

She jolts from her sleep, knocking over a bundle of fabric when she hears the cry

Hoping that they haven’t stepped on a needle or anything she runs to their location

Seeing only a scraped knee she ruffles their hair before picking them up and walking to the bathroom

She coos and calms them down as she places a bandage on their knee with their favorite anime character on it

She then asks if her kid would like to watch some TV together and they nod

okay, i did start dr2 last night. i opened at work yesterday so i was too sleepy to get past the prologue, lol. gonna post my initial character impressions here for funsies / to look back on and laugh at when i get further into the game. i don't want to look up the character names in case i find spoilers so i might get some of them wrong. sorry for the lack of cut, i'm on mobile

sonia: good. i like her design/art style and voice acting. i like that she's being played as actively interested in making friends with others even if she's totally disconnected from normal people in contrast to (original) byakuya's active disdain for non-richies

teru: i wanted to like him bc his design is cute and i find most of his characterization interesting, but then he ended up being the pervert character so byeeee

mikan: like her design aside from the hair. kind of neckbeard-baity with the extreme shyness and caretaker angle but i'm hoping she'll develop beyond that

hiyoko?: HATE her design with the big plastic looking pigtails and bright orange kimono. i also don't like l*li bait looking characters as a rule. but i did end up liking himeko, and the traditional dancer concept is really neat. plus the hidden vicious streak could hopefully develop into an interesting character type

ibuki: when i saw pics of her before i thought she looked kind of ott hot topic kid so i wasn't really interested. but i'm a really big fan of the energetic type so her design has grown on me as well.

mahiru?(photog girl): no real opinion yet. she looks the most like a normal student compared to hinata, which is kind of funny, but i have this suspicion that she'll be killed off in either the first or the second trial, and that her photographs will be evidence in trial 1.

kuzuryuu (yes i did look this one up): i thought he was a girl at first bc most of the guys don't have eyelashes, so i was a little disappointed right off the bat. i just played dr1 with mondo as the ultimate gang leader so i'm hoping he'll be able to distinguish himself from that.

owari: basically seems like hina 2.0 as the tanned, medium-length-brown-haired, big-chested athletic girl. but i liked hina so i'm not that bothered yet.

gundham: kind of dig him so far. love that his hardcore persona is directly integrated with his love for animals; it feels less cliche than "tough guy secretly likes animals and gets soft and mushy around them as a comedy trope". bored by his design tho, it doesn't really grab me

soda: love the eyeburner palette. haven't interacted much yet but so far he seems cool.

peko: LOVE her. love her design, love her voice acting, love the refined swordswoman concept. 10/10

chiaki: also a big fan. hopefully she won't be total dudebro gamer waifu fuel but i'm biased after seeing her group scenes with some of the drv3 girls in the drv3 post-game training mode.

nekomaru: totally boring design unfortunately, but i like his enthusiasm and that he's a team manager in contrast to some of our previous big muscle boys.

"byakuya": i've gathered that he is not the real byakuya from some of the material in drv3. i think that's a potentially interesting angle, but since i already know he's fake i'm not as interested. but who knows, i knew about genocide jack's identity going into 1 and there were still some cool things in that storyline

hinata: i like his instant suspicion and unwillingness to chill out, but other than that he feels very makoto 2.0 as well. especially his design, come on.

komaeda: the controversial figure. i had absolutely no idea what to expect - my impression of him is gleaned from the homophobic sunday meme, despairkomaeda, and those character slideshows from 2012-13. but as it turns out, he seems like a pretty nice dude so far! i'm guessing he's got some deep-seated trauma based on how popular he was as a kintype when the game came out. i actually don't think he's gonna be the secret bad guy or even just secretly villainous, his sincere fan content isn't like ouma's.

so far i'd say my favorites are peko, ibuki, owari, chiaki, komaeda, and sonia.
