In the head of Esteban Ocon, F1 driver : « At 130 km/h, I have the impression to be able of walking next to the car »
ᯓ Translation of the article “Dans la tête d’Esteban Ocon, pilote de F 1 : « A 130 km/h, j’ai l’impression de pouvoir marcher à côté de la voiture »„ by Éric Michel and Christophe Lacaze-Eslous for Le Parisien. The article is protected by a paywall.
Preparation of the car
"I am completely involved in its development. For me, improving the car is an obsession. Sometimes, I wake up at night with an idea, I write it down and send it straight to the engineers, in case it could help. I tell myself that they must have already thought of it, but in 20 to 30% of the ideas, this was not the case. So, it helps"
The week before the race
"I disconnect less and less. You have to stay 100% involved in the thing. I go to England one or two days a week (to Enstone in the Alpine factory) to see the engineers. Sometimes we leave directly from there to go to the Grands Prix. Otherwise, I work on my personal training. I do recovery, mass gain, cardio, and also visual detection. Even outside the race, these are long days that last from 9:30 a.m. to 6-7 p.m. But I'm happy about it, when I left the circuit, in 2018 and 2019 (he was a test driver for Mercedes), I worked in the cave and I no longer had access to F1. I missed it."
On the starting grid
“Before the lights turn green, I don’t necessarily feel a thrill. It’s more in my mind, a question of adrenaline. It’s always there, even after all this time, every time. After all the preparation before the race and the concentration it requires afterwards, the start is a bit of a lull. I look to the right: Ah, Max Verstappen! I look to the left behind my mirror: Hou là, Fernando Alonso! In front: Waouh, Lewis Hamilton! There are some great guys around me.”
His driver friends
“I realize how lucky I am to be one of the 20 F1 drivers in the world. That’s why I always have a smile on my face. We all respect each other. We’ve all known each other since we were very young. I drove with Pierre (Gasly), Charles (Leclerc), Max (Verstappen), Lando (Norris) when I was young… We have a lot in common, pretty much the same lives. I always said to my childhood friends: If one day you see me change and become like certain athletes — I won’t name any names — I’d like to take one, so that it wakes me up and puts my brain back in place.”
The madness of the start
“Getting a good start means getting out well. It’s the crucial moment, that’s when the most things happen. Sometimes I have a bad feeling. I feel like a guy is going to hit me from behind. You can’t be sure that everything is going to go well, never. It’s so grouped, someone can block the wheels. On the other hand, once it has happened and it has gone well, after that it’s smooth sailing.”
Peaks at over 300 km/h
“People talk a lot about the very high speed (300 km/h) and the tunnel vision effect, in other words the loss of peripheral vision. This is not true at all. In Mexico, for example, we reach speeds of 370 km/h. Despite this astonishing speed, we can still see people on the left, on the right, in the stands. Even when I started, I don’t remember this effect. When I was 6 or 7 years old, while driving on the track, at 90 km/h in a kart, I saw a very beautiful flower on each lap. One day, I stopped. Hop! I picked it and then brought it back to my mother!”
Maximum concentration
“During the race, you don’t have time to think about anything else: neither your worries nor your joys outside of F1, your loved ones, your family. Nothing! You have to be 100% focused. If you start to scatter your mind, it’s because you’re starting to see things blurry. That means you no longer have control over your heart rate and as a result, you lose energy. At that point, there’s a big problem and you start to lose concentration, and losing concentration means danger.”
Always measure the danger
"I'm not saying that fear isn't present. Above all, we must never forget that F1 is a risky sport. But if you're too afraid in F1, it's better to stop, it means that you don't know your subject inside out. You're no longer able to control it. I've already had situations where I was at fault and it hurts.
However, distrust always helps me think before taking action. I ask myself: Is it worth trying this or that maneuver? What's to be gained compared to the danger it represents? When a car is in front of me and I can overtake it, I wonder if it's worth it. I constantly ask myself: Isn't there a wall next to it?"
On the road, like the average Joe
"The road you drive on every day and an F1 circuit have nothing in common. On a circuit, we have marshals, guys at every bend who watch out for, for example, an animal crossing. If one of us has left oil on the lap before, there is an immediate yellow flag. On the road, there is no one to warn us of danger.
Even if it goes slower, you have to be very careful. I am of course. I respect the traffic laws by having the chance to drive cars that are very nice with great performance. I just have to get used to it again. At 130 km/h on the freeway, I feel like I can open the door, get out, and walk alongside."
World champion one day
"That's of course my goal. It's not that it's in my head, it's an obsession. Ever since I was little, I've wanted to go to F1. Now that I'm here, I want to win. I've always been a very bad loser. There's no way I'm leaving F1 with regrets. I'm putting all the chances on my side and all the cards are in my hands."
A life as a driver
“Between races, I have time to watch movies and listen to music while traveling. I’m a big Marvel fan. But I don’t really have a normal life, I know that. I dedicate all my time to what I do, about three hundred days a year. It’s hard for people, my girlfriend, my family, we don’t see each other often. I still have a home, but I don’t spend much time there.
I miss things, friends’ birthdays, dinners with my grandparents, but it’s a lifestyle choice. I worked hard to get here. I can’t complain about having a different life. It’s great that I can live my passion, travel and see different countries, meet passionate people.”

The poll ended. And we have “Accidental Marriage (Las Vegas ‘23 version)” as the winner!
While I write it. Here you have the second part of the short writing ideas that didn’t make it into the top 10 ideas.
Second Poll’s Last 4 Ideas
1. Sad One Night Stand
His eyes finally move away from the screen when he heard screams from his best friend and former teammate at McLaren. Lando was walking back from the medical area with a look that could kill as he approached Zak, Andrea and the rest of the team with anger. His clear eyes indicated the rage in his being.
-You knew it! You knew that the car had a malfunction and yet they let him drive like nothing happened! Oscar could die because you cared more about a fucking trophy than people's lives!
That statement was enough to break the heart of the Spaniard man. Although the Australian was not a saint of his devotion, he had been one of the few people who had written to him wishing he would find a team that would appreciate his ability when Ferrari announced the switch with Hamilton. Because he knew what it was to give your blood, sweat and tears to a team while said team was not interested in you at all.
Oscar had been one of the few people who had sent him a detail when he was still recovering from his operation. And he had gone to his hotel room with unhealthy food, but allowed on his diet, to celebrate his victory in Australia.
Both had learned to have a different relationship to any other in the Paddock, because the youngest was able to leave the problems of the track on it. Like the one in Miami, where he had forced Carlos to do the same after their talk at Monaco’s podium. From there, they had learned to get along, or at least better than before, their words in Hungary last year reflected that.
But here he was now. Listening to Sargeant's drowning cries and Lando's claims. Everything was the same as with Jules. They were about to lose a driver again because of the decision of someone else who was playing their lives with their hands on the wheel.
That was his third signal for disaster.
How terrible that he realized so late what that meant. How awful it was to hear that the team who was supposed to protect the pilot had left him to his fate with a car they knew would fail, all for a worthless trophy.
But above all, how tragic for the new Mercedes driver to realize his feelings for the young McLaren pilot just after receiving the news of his death.
Life never really favored Carlos Sainz Jr.
2. Fluff Wedding
-You want to Marry Carlos?
-Yes. I know our relationship is still young. But I want to be with him for the rest of our lives.
Oscar kept his eyes moving from Reyes to Senior. He was nervous, terrified even, but he knew what he wanted and that was to marry Carlos, his Carlos. So, he was going to give everything for his parents’ approval.
Reyes smiled happily after hearing him confess his love for her son, but Senior was still looking at him. Like he wanted to find something to deny the request he was hearing.
But the Australian knew he won’t find anything outside love. Because that was all he has for Carlos. Pure love.
-What are your plans to marry our son?
Oscar smiled. That might be the easiest part of all the reunion, because he knew perfectly well what he wants.
He wants a forever with Carlos Sainz Jr.
3. Driver Carlos x Fem! Singer Oscar
Carlos kept his eyes on the girl in the Williams’ garage. He had listened to Charles and Lando fanboying over meeting her again. They were into her concert recently and they couldn’t stop talking about it.
He knew, he was there. Specially when someone insulted her music and she just acted like she didn’t hear a thing while they were in the meet and greet. Logan was ready to jump against anyone, but she looked like she didn’t care at all.
-They will hate me no matter what.
Carlos wishes he had said something different in that moment, but he was an idiot and had to open his mouth to make the pretty girl mad.
-They kind of have a point.
The Spaniard managed to get the girl to look at him. With hidden fury, of course, but at least her eyes were on him.
4. Multiple Past Lives
He will survive. He has done it until now. Oscar has been working hard to keep him alive. The Australian even promise his father that this time was going to be different. That he was going to save his life.
They are no longer Leonardo and Alessandro, with one of them having a car accident. They are no longer Nikolay and Konstantin, with one of them as a Russian soldier about to die. They are no longer Bastian and Étienne, with one of them as kids about to die at the hands of a Serial Killer. They are no longer meeting for a second and watching one of them die in the next one.
Oscar has met Carlos through all of his past lives, even if they don’t cross paths, Oscar always knows Carlos is there somewhere, even if he doesn’t see him, he can feel it.
Oscar and Carlos were not lovers, were not even friends. They only met each other once per lifetime, and then, Oscar had to wait a couple of seconds before Carlos died in a specific way while Oscar is there, not able to do anything.
Some people would call them soulmates but Oscar doesn’t think that term sticks right with them, he thinks that they’re just two guys who happen to bump into each other’s lives forever, but that doesn’t mean they’re soulmates.
Because what kind of God would make Oscar know and met his soulmate before they die in front of him with him unable to do anything?

okay so I wanna voice my opinion bc I feel your blog as the only safe space where I can do that.
regarding Newey leaving the team: I absolutely agree on not seeing him returning to McLaren. I don't think this team at the moment can provide to Newey both sufficient salary and leeway. McLaren are coming back from a slump and I think Newey would be interested in working with those who have come out of that more or less reliably or have long established themselves as a top team. He does not have time to rebuild the team which fell. McLaren needs time, though they are making great progress.
going to Aston Martin: maybe, especially from 2026 as they are switching to Honda engines and Newey already has experience and connections with this company and their supplies from his time in Red Bull. also in the team there is Alonso, which could interest Newey, but most likely this is the last contract for Fernando, and therefore there won't be long years of joint work. further to work with the team in which one of the pilots absolutely cannot realize the potential of the car (side-eye to Stroll) is a waste of time. and with all the rumors of selling Astons – Newey needs someone who can stand their ground confidently.
I don't think Newey is interested in Mercedes in any way, because they've currently lost a driver that he would like to work with, and also got the car concept horribly wrong. all the ground effect era doesn't go well for them. and atm I don't see it changing.
if I remember it right (correct me if I'm wrong) Newey has twice in his career expressed interest in working with scuderia and perhaps now he finally has the opportunity to do so. he was seriously stopped by the fact of moving to Italy, so we'll see how it turns out.
I am not a tifosi, god knows I hate this traditional team, but I respect the work they are doing and the probability of Newey leaving to go to Ferrari is the greatest right now. two drivers with the potential to compete for the title and both can adapt their style to the car. one of them has 7 titles, the other has the potential to compete for the title PLUS importantly has a natural preference for oversteer.
Hamilton and Leclerc are gonna be the best duo to extract everything out of the car and push it to the limit. we'll see how the teammate dynamic will go, but they're both respectful enough to each other. even if once they'll crash, they will talk, solve the problem and move on.
but to be honest I wouldn't worry about Red Bull fans. at least until the end of the current technical regulations. the 2025 car is being developed during 2024 so maybe Ferrari will gain strength and by 2025 Max will have some competition, but there can't be a failure for sure. and lastly: with the new technical regulations Newey usually does not immediately get exactly into the concept and build a "self-driving" car. it usually takes him time so it depends not only on Newey's work but also on how the other teams fucked up or on the contrary amazingly get into the concept.
I've read info that a lot of things on the technical side have also been under Pierre Vache's direction in recent years. so that's when Ferrari pulls him (and then Hannah Schmitz) off as well, I'd start to panic.
I seriously rationally see Ferrari getting stronger, Mercedes falling lower and lower (and it won't be any better in 2025, they fucked up) and maybe at some point these two teams will form a league of top teams, Aston, Macs and Mercs as mid-fielders and then the further outsiders.
however over the next decade (?) I think Williams can make a serious comeback. James Vowles is actually quite ruthless, don't let his insinuating and calm tone fool you. this is the man who swapped places between Valtteri and Lewis in a Mercedes even without the need. he cares about the drivers but first of all he cares about the team. so don't be surprised if Logan will end up without the seat next year.
James Vowles is a strategist and has already started to change the team and also the approach to the car. imo it is a known fact that the car of the top team is built so that it is good everywhere: straights, fast-corners, low speed corners... they might not be the best. but they're good everywhere. balance is the key to success. outsiders, on the other hand, make sure that the car has pronounced strengths. therefore, the car can only score points on a track that suits its configuration. the strong point of Williams was the straights. this year it is not as pronounced as in previous seasons, but it is a sacrifice for future development. keeping an eye on this team because their approach is the most promising in the long run of all the outsider teams.
and one last thing I wanted to say for everyone reading this post and especially for those new to Formula 1 fandom: don't let vroom vroom world events affect you emotionally. otherwise every new weekend will be an emotional swing. don't cry about Newey leaving, don't get mad at James for his decision on Logan in Australia. there is no point. you have no influence on these events and negative emotions are not the nicest thing to feel. so just observe. this will keep you sane.
thank you very much for reading this long ask, I really want to know your opinion on my takes. please, tell me if you disagree, I'm very open to see arguments, why am I wrong. thank you once again 💚
First of all, I'm so happy that you see my blog as a safe space to share your thoughts! That makes me so happy.
Anon, I don't have anything at all to add to this, not to mention that I do not have anything I can say I disagree with. So if you don't mind, I'm just going to leave this here in all its glory. Just know that I am in love with your mind. 💚

Hi
I just wanted to comment on what you said about how cars aren’t made for any particular driver and that teams just make the best possible(fastest) car. I think Mercedes have always been fair with their drivers and their never seemed favouritism over car development (?). Both Rosberg and Bottas seemed to enjoy driving their cars and so it doesn’t look like Mercedes favour Lewis.
However that’s not always the case in other teams… redbulls own staff confirmed that they never gave Alex the car that he wanted and in his recent players tribune profile he said that both cars we’re developed to max’s preference and you just had to accept it. Pierre also struggled in the same car. I think when teams get drivers who like their cars set up in a similar way you won’t find contention but teams don’t always do their research. For example, Charles and Carlos both complained about the car last season and when the car was steered toward Carlos preferences in the second half of the season Charles complained but it was too late.
Hi! So nope, still not true.
I'm gonna put my answer under a cut because it got long with the screenshots and all.
What I was looking for for like 30 minutes was this thread, written by a space engineer on twitter, and retweeted on my TL by several F1-related people such as Blake, from the EngineBreaking podcast, who's an ex-F1 engineer. Now the thread is about feedback, balance and development but here's what caught my attention :
"[...] first part of the answer is, the pilot isn't an engineer. It might seem obvious but not really. He isn't the one who's deciding how to build the car, and even if he can make suggestions, he's not the one calling the shots in the end.
Indeed, someone's favorite driving style isn't necessary the fastest and a faster car doesn't necessarily mean more comfortable to drive. The RB16 is an excellent example of this."
"The designers explained that Max masked the major design issues the car had, which became invisible on data and which the engineers get any feedback on because it didn't bother him. They only understood that very late.
And while it wasn't an issue for him, we saw his teammates struggle one by one. Albon compared the sensitivity of that car to someone setting the sensitivity of their mouse to the maximum to play an FPS game."
And indeed : here's an article about it.
RBR didn't make the car that way for Max. They made it that way, and it just so happens that Max, who is incredibly talented and incredibly adaptable, was able to drive it very fast anyway, to the point they didn't notice they were developing it in a bad direction until very late.
If you go down that road, Max is actually the perfect counter-example to what you're trying to argue. It's not that RBR made a car for him, it's that he's precisely so adaptable that it didn't matter that the car had a major flaw.
As I said the team builds the fastest possible car. That's what they did. The car was flawed. Fact. But they had a driver who could drive it to its fastest anyway, so why change it? That's what people interpret as "they designed it this way for him". But still, they didn't. They designed it this way and he could drive it, so he did. And they didn't correct the flaw because it didn't matter. Even if the other driver was struggling, unfortunately. In that sense, yes, they favoured Max over Pierre and Alex, but they didn't design the car to favour him. The chronological order goes the other way around. Ultimately, they decided it was more important for their results that Max go as fast as he could than risk slowing him down a tad for his teammate to catch up a bit. I find it arguable to say the least that this was the right decision, but still, they did not design the car for him.
ETA : ultimately what the article I linked say is precisely that even if it fit him and he could drive it and well, they ultimately had to stop developing in this direction because it was taking it too far so. yeah.
The whole bit about Ferrari developing the car to fit Carlos being pure rumours and speculations, I will not comment on it.

Mick Schumacher Fully Lives His Adventure At the 24 Hours of Le Mans With Alpine
Mick Schumacher is preparing to make his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For this 92nd edition of the Le Mans classic, he is driving the Alpine A424 #36 from Alpine Endurance Team entered in the Hypercar category. He shares his impressions at the start of this great adventure.
After having competed in single-seater championships, first and foremost the Formula 1 World Championship, Mick Schumacher (25 years old) entered endurance and therefore the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The German driver joined Alpine's hypercar program last winter. He pilots the A424 #36 alongside Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxiviere. He approaches the biggest endurance race in the world after showing strong performances in the previous three rounds of the FIA WEC World Endurance Championship. "When we arrive at Le Mans, it's always with the ambition to shine and do the best possible. Being with Alpine, which is a French brand, gives another dimension," recognizes the man who competed in 43 grands prix between 2021 and 2022. Schumacher experienced the previous rounds of the FIA WEC as preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. "Everything is new to me. What is obvious is that people come here because of their passion for car racing, and that's a real pleasure. On a more personal level, I can't wait to race, to see what it's like to be on the go for 24 hours, because I've never had this experience. There is always something happening here, there is constant traffic, so being in the wrong place at the wrong time can be costly. This is an additional challenge. You have to constantly have a strategy in mind to be sure you can finish your relay."
One of the many special features of the 24 Hours of Le Mans is night driving, a new experience for Schumacher and one that he appreciated last night during the second free practice session. "Frankly, I didn't find the exercise that difficult," he tempers. "During the tests we conducted in Jerez, it seemed much harder to me than here. To be honest, I really liked it. This gives different sensations. My teammates have experience of night driving and I'm going to learn a lot from them. The race is going to be exciting, that’s for sure." He can count on the valuable advice of Nicolas Lapierre, who has sixteen participations. "We spend a lot of time with Mick. With the other drivers, we talk about traffic or slow zones, which can be quite tricky. The point of alertness that I specifically pointed out to him is sunrise. I advised him to stay focused because, seeing the day dawn, you almost have the impression that the race is over, so much so that attention is relaxed and that's when we see a lot of errors occurring," explains the leader of the drivers of the brand with the A arrow.
Given his experience in Formula 1, Mick Schumacher cannot escape the comparison with endurance. He is categorical: "It's not comparable. I strive to separate the two, not to create a bridge in terms of driving style, to be 100% on one side or the other. A hypercar is heavier, but it's still fun to drive. The car is made for Le Mans, so every time I get behind the wheel it's a joy." Schumacher is therefore preparing to add a new string to his bow. Between technical challenges, adaptation to night driving and constant learning, this race promises to be a decisive step in the young pilot's career. Remember that his father, Michael, took part in the Le Mans classic in 1991 at the wheel of a Sauber Mercedes C11 which he shared with Karl Wendlinger and Fritz Kreutzpointner. This unique participation resulted in fifth place in the general classification and the best lap in the race. We bet that Mick would happily sign up for such an assessment next Sunday at 3 p.m.

I've already been in a pitiful emotional state for days now, reading real nonsense about Charles' talent is putting me even more on edge. I do think I understand why he's so hard on himself, it's because everyone is waiting for him to come around and never let him make a mistake like he has to be a war machine.
I would love to see these people criticizing him, behind the wheel to see if they do better. Then to compare him to Max or Lewis as if they never made a mistake, is a real bullshit. Has everyone forgotten Max's debut?
He wanted to be on top all the time so badly in his early days, that it earned him the nickname crashstappen. It was a horrible nickname. What allowed Max to reach the top was the evolution of his mind as he got older and wiser. He was able to let go at certain levels.
Because Charles crashed during free practice and made a mistake at the French GP, so that's it, he's finished and he'll never become world champion? No, but seriously, you'd think Rome was built in a day. One day it's Charles, one day it's the team, one day it's Fred who doesn't make decisions fast enough, one day it's Carlos (even if I don’t have him in my heart, he's still a good punching bag for people it needs be say).
At some point, you have to give time to time and the right to make mistakes. Even if I love Max, I wish we could stop comparing them in this way. They didn't have the same education, nor the same background. Max arrived very young in F1, he had more years to perfect himself (this is not a bad criticism, it's a fact) and above all he has a team that lets him make mistakes because he is HUMAN. A diamond needs to be polished to become a jewel, that's exactly the case with Max. I’m proud of what Max became and how he succeeded to just let it go some things that allow to him the champion he’s today. And it will be the case of Charles, I’m sure. It drives me crazy to read that Charles doesn't have the mind. The mind of what??? LOL anyone in his place would have gone crazy with what happened at Ferrari. I would have just crying at each interview and insulting everyone.
Lewis is already having a hard time with what is happening at Mercedes, even though he is an immense champion. Can you imagine how he would have finished if he had been with a team like Ferrari? Charles has the best mental state, as does Pierre, who has been suffering for years. It's a miracle that he hasn't been spun around in an interview or on the radio. Then let's stop criticizing Vasseur, he's the only Ferrari director for a while who takes his balls to say stop. We don't fire everyone in one day to hire the first person who comes along.
I repeat, Rome was not built in a day, a concrete plan, a strategy is worked on over months. People are too bad with Charles, they can't find a fault, so we need someone who doesn't fit into the cliché of the virulent and aggressive pilot off the track. So clearly we are still in the policy that being humble and calm is being weak. I understand better now why people are rotten to the bone, this vision of thinking represents well the problems that affects F1 for years that only gets worse. We criticize the FIA, but these kind of "fans" contribute to this degradation.
#f1#charles leclerc#formula one#max verstappen#formula 1#ferrari#cl16#shame on these people who’s the audacity to say these kind of things like if it’s a fact…#it’s a miracle that charles succeeded to be vice champion last year with happened everybody forgot it of course#< we keep only the negative thoughts it’s always more easy#lestappen#< they look like each other but they’re not the same they’re completing each other

Dreamies if they were Formula 1 drivers.
a/n: in my head, that's right!!! tysm @hyuckhoon for helping me w this!!
Mark — Mercedes, since he was a little kid, this was his dream, being a F1 Driver, his dream came true thanks to his parents who gave him all the support. He started in a not-so-good team, but after Mercedes saw Mark Lee on the race, they saw how good Mark as a driver, and now he is in a good team and thanks to Mercedes he’s always on the podium.
Haechan — McLaren, a team that is trying to get back to what it was before, but Haechan is actually not giving a fuck to this team, he’s temporarily on McLaren, because his real dream is drive for Ferrari or Mercedes.
Renjun — Aston Martin, he doesn't finish a single race without winning at least one point, always there marking presence among the top five, during the period of the races, he always get more than three podiums. A great driver that probably Aston Martin wouldn’t let go so easily.
Jeno — Red bull, a great driver, being raised since childhood to be a great formula 1 pilot. A single open curve, and his childhood opponent -Na Jaemin- passed him, even though he had an advantage for being with a Red Bull car.
Jaemin — Mercedes, Mark’s partner, Jeno's longtime opponent, there was no race in which these two did not stand side by side fighting for the first place in the podium. Coming from a rich family it was not necessary to study, he chose car racing of his own free will, always aiming to enter Formula 1, he has always been a Mercedes driver.
Chenle — Ferrari, passed from generation, his grandpa was a driver, his father too and now he. The Zhong family's last name was already marked on Ferrari. Even if Ferrari cars were no longer those good cars with good drivers, the Zhong family would never give up Ferrari.
Jisung — McLaren, unlike Haechan, Jisung is there for McLaren, because this team is his life. He wants to bring McLaren back, the same McLaren that was Ayrton Senna's. When he gets a fifth place the joy is immense, both from him and from the fans, Jisung is there to run to McLaren and bring her back to the podiums.
