Sometimes, the line between "drag artist" and "performer who is queer" becomes incredibly blurry and hard to define.
One of the most famous queer artists of the Harlem renaissance was Gladys Bentley, who was openly a lesbian and who wore men's clothing as a part of her stage persona.
Tumblr media
Bentley sometimes used the term "male impersonator" as a way of being able to wear masculine attire on stage, but she was never fully pretending to be male. She was always being herself.
A virtuouso piano player, she was called "America's Greatest Sepia Piano Player" and the "Brown Bomber of Sophisticated Songs" She headlined at places like Cotton Club and the Ubangi Club, and always drew in massive crowds.
youtube
Described by Langston Hughes, "For two or three amazing years, Miss Bentley sat, and played piano all night long … with scarcely a break between the notes, sliding from one song to another, with a powerful and continuous underbeat of jungle rhythm. Miss Bentley was an amazing exhibition of musical energy – a large, dark, masculine lady, whose feet pounded the floor while her fingers pounded the keyboard – a perfect piece of African sculpture, animated by her own rhythm."
Tumblr media
Gladys Bentley was far from being the only queer woman blues singer of the day. Lucille Bogan, Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey also had sexual relationships with women, and sang songs about same-sex desire and "bulldaggers."
youtube
Even still, Bentley stood out for her unabashed queerness. When performing at the Ubangi Club, she had a chorus line of drag queens performing behind her.
As time wore on and America became more conservative, Bentley's career struggled. In the 1950s, she renounced her old ways and claimed she had been "cured" of lesbianism and "become a woman again" through a regimen of estrogen shots. It was the only way she was able to maintain a career through the McCarthy era.

"Where did this come from?" Hannibal asked. His hands were busy washing Will's hair. A bruise on his temple drew his attention, making him brush away the foam to get a better look. "It wasn't here yesterday."
"A guy we arrested showed some resistance. He hit me with the barrel of his gun." Will explained. His eyes were closed and he was almost purring in Hannibal's hands.
Hannibal made a disapproving sound.
"Shame you arrested him. I can't go after him now."
"You do realize you can't chase down every guy who touches me, right?"
"One can always try." Hannibal answered honestly and continued massaging Will's scalp.
"I never hear about stuff like that from you." Will suddenly said and opened his eyes.
"What kind of stuff?"
"About the people that do anything to you."
"That's because the people who do anything to me don't get to live too much, darling. I take care of them myself."
"Of that much I am aware." Will said and pictured the way the Ripper case file kept getting thicker and thicker on his desk. "It would be nice if you didn't. At least sometimes."
"Are you implying that you want to play the knight in shining armour? For me?"
"You're stupid." Will concluded. "But yes. Sometimes you are too elegant with these individuals. And I get it, that's your thing."
Hannibal hummed thoughtfully.
"You got me curious. I might take your offer."
"Do that."
*
"Alright. Now, let's discuss what the victims have in common." Jack said, looking through a few pictures.
Will's phone rang just when he was about to reply.
"Sorry." He apologized and was about to reject the call. Hannibal's name flashing on the screen made him do the opposite.
"Hey." Will greeted him.
"My dearest." Hannibal started. "There is a gentleman here at Walmart who left his shopping cart in the parking lot. Right in front of my Bentley."
"That... sounds annoying?"
"And agonizingly rude."
Will smiled thinking of the funny choice of words. He found it adorable that Hannibal had called to share that with him. Then it sunk in. He remembered about their discussion last night.
"You're at Walmart where exactly?"
"In Quantico. I wanted to pick you up later."
"I'm on my way. Don't let that son of a bitch go." Will said and hung up.
That was it. His knight in shining armour moment. The looks he earned from everyone in the room were mixed and confused.
"Sorry, I need to go. It's important."
"Of course. The serial killer can wait." Jack concluded as Will was already leaving the room.
*
"Hey." Will said as soon as he parked his car. "You."
"Huh?" The man who was already very bored with the conversation he was having with Hannibal turned his head towards Will.
"Yes, you. Grab your shopping cart quickly and put it where it should be."
"And who exactly are you? The shopping cart police?"
"I will be your worst nightmare if you don't do as I say. Trust me, this is me being nice."
"I'm not doing anything." He said and started walking towards his car. Will did not quickened his pace. He memorized the car plate and watched the man leave with a content smile on his face.
"That was me being nice." Will told Hannibal who looked like he was watching his favorite movie.
"I am looking forward to what will happen."
"Good." Will said, then kept on his shining armour. "Are you alright?"
"Bothered by this incident but I am slowly becoming more and more enthusiastic."
*
"I hope you understand why I also asked Dr. Lecter to consult on this case." Jack said as soon as Will and Hannibal arrived at the crime scene. "It's quite peculiar."
"The man was found dead in a shopping cart at Walmart. His liver is missing. The cut is quite sloppy so definitely not the Ripper." Jimmy explained.
"Was it really that sloppy?" Will asked unamused by the feedback.
"I mean, it shows that our killer has no medical training whatsoever. But he's good enough. Meticulous."
"What do you think, doctor?" Will asked, ignoring Jimmy.
"The crime scene shows high class. Power. It has something sensual to it. I would say that the killer must have been quite disturbed by a very specific behavior caused by the victim."
"What exactly?" Jack asked confused by the specific choice of words. He knew better than to question Hannibal.
"Maybe the victim left his shopping cart in the parking lot?" Brian suggested making Jack roll his eyes.
"I'm sure it's deeper than that."

Not an ask but a HUGE secret thank you. At the British Library on Tuesday, Rob chatted to me before everyone else arrived, and when he saw my coffee cup I'd been given on the set tour, which I'd got Derek Jacobi to sign for me, Rob very VERY kindly asked if I'd like him to take it to ask you to sign it as well. I hadn't wanted to ask myself, as the event email had said you wouldn't be signing anything that night. He also even MORE kindly offered to ask if you might sign my occult edition book as well. I just wanted to thank you SO much for doing so, it really made my day! The print of the Bentley ink drawing I did I wanted to give you, as it was Good Omens that inspired me to learn how to draw. I did that back in 2020, and the stickers are ones I drew after I became more accomplished. As a final note, when David Tennant signed the book in huge letters right under the title, he said "I'm going to write it there like I've written it, I feel like Neil would approve of that." Anyway, thank you for everything, and also for making me cry as well as laugh reminiscing about Terry.
You're so very very welcome. It was a magical event. I kept expecting Terry to come up on the stage.

You had to wait a long time but the wait is finally over!
The big Valentine+Aftercare week Special Finale is here!!! 🤩🥳😍
With 5 PAGES!!!!
What's it all worth? YES!
It was worth working on it day and night, I'm proud of it!
I have once again surpassed myself, I have once again pushed aside any panic and fear that I can't do it!
I drew Metatron, Micheal and the Bentley - cars in general - for the first time ever!!! In addition, I actually ventured into more backgrounds again and even drew some crockery... but my final boss was the new poses!!!! 😬😬
I would have loved to draw more poses and scenes, but there wasn't enough space and anyway, it's a comic not a film 🤣🤣🤣
God damn it, but I did it and I'm more than proud of it!
I mean, what can I really expect from myself, who hasn't touched a pencil to draw in 10 years and has only been an artist again for 3 months now? I'm at the beginning, that's ok! Everyone started somewhere!
Since it is and should remain a specific Instagram comic, the NSFW are already there, but very soft!
I mean hellooooo, Valentine's Day!!!! It's not all roses, is it? 😇
Ah and because of the background of the Bentley. Aziraphale asked Crowley to walk from the park to the Ritz, as it's not far from there!
That's why the Bentley is still at the park 😇 Missing scene in the story 😂
