I've been thinking a lot, I've done a lot of posts about collectors edition Barbies wherein I have mentioned certain designers, or even mentioned how certain designers have really distinctive styles, but I haven't ever gone into particular detail about the people behind the Barbies.

So... this post is about Angel Kent.

Angel Kent is a Mattel designer I've mentioned a few times on the blog so far; for example, in conjunction with his having designed the Pink Premiere Barbie or the 2023 NBDCC doll, Winter Fantasy.

One of his more interesting design credits was for the Flight of Fashion doll.

A little backstory on this doll; in 2019, Mattel did a Doll Design Showdown, where fans voted on four design concepts, then two. Flight of Fashion was the final winner. You might be thinking that this was pitting four designers against each other for an opportunity to be recognized - but no. All four designs were Angel Kent.

A Q&A explained that this was to bring light to Kent as a "previously unheralded creative" and gave him the opportunity to share his story.

In that Q&A he explained that he had interned with Mattel in 2016 and officially joined them as a designer in 2017, working on projects such as the Dreamtopia Colour Magic Mermaid.

Appropriate, because apparently his childhood favourite Barbie was a mermaid too.

Got a few more toys from Amazn, recently. The mermaids (hrr06) took forever to be shipped; I'm guessing they are a lot more popular than I had anticipated. I waited for what seemed like an eternity and beyond, for them to have them available for purchase. After stalking the sales page for years, then another eternity for them to finally send me a shipping notification, after finally ordering them! I thought they would pull an S.H.Figuarts Sasuke Uchiha on me; a few years ago, they kept asking me if I still wanted the first version of that tiny figure I had pre-ordered on day one! Then told me after months of waiting patiently and keeping my order, "sorry, we are no longer carrying that figure." I wasted so much time and patience on that one figure from them, that I was fed up with Amzn. I even stopped getting other things from them for a long time, just out of frustation more than anything.

Long story longer, I got my mermaids! I got two so I can unbox one, but I wouldn't mind an army of this doll, she's stunning! I fell in love with these the instant I saw a glimpse of them last year, if I recall correctly. I haven't been fortunate to get the opened mouth (HRR05) one yet, but I hope I'll snag at least one of those as well. I'll probably get a MTM body for her, but I don't mind her on the mermaid one for a while. I might even try her on an action figure body some day! I also got myself more Nanana Surprise Minis Series 2 dolls, hoping to get Paula, but no dice! I got two repeats!! Holey freaking h3ll hole, I'm starting to lose hope! I might try once more though...not because I am a hoarder, I just really want Paula but not at eBy prices! DX

People often ask me, "Is there Barbie branded..." and then name a product. Frequently the answer is -- well, frequently, it's that I don't know because it has never occurred to me to look! But when I do look, it turns out that the answer is yes.

It's difficult to overstate that there really is a Barbie-branded... almost everything.

One such question I got recently was, "Is there Barbie-branded slime?" I conceptually really like slime, but when I have personally used slime as a sensory item in the past, it becomes tough and overworked almost instantaneously.

The Barbie Pop Reveal fruit series includes slime - among a great deal of other accessories and features all themed around creating a sensory experience for the children playing.

Seriously, these dolls contain a bit of everything. The dolls are scented, they have colour-change features, the packaging is a drink cup, there are faux ice cubes that pop open to reveal additional accessories - and there's slime "for fun, sensory play".

There is also the... bizarrely named, in my opinion, Mini Slimy Fun Shop.

All the retailer listings I saw for this add that this comes with "2 fun surprises", and it took me several minutes to realise that these surprises were the stickers advertised on the box. Sometimes I don't make connections very well.

This is a branded Barbie product in affiliation with arts and crafts brand Cra-Z-Art, featuring eight mini containers of themed slime - like Slimy Frappe, Slimy Frosting and Slimy Cake.

I love slime for sensory reasons, but I never in my life want to hear the phrase "Slimy Cake" again.

On the subject of phrases I don't want to hear - I don't think slime in a nail polish bottle is a bad idea, but I have an aversion to the phrase, "Slimy Nail Polish".

There are also some Dreamtopia Mermaids who come with packets of glitter slime.

This is more acceptable to my aversions. At least it's not labelled "Slimy Mermaid".

ok so i finished sol2 and here's most of my thoughts;

I liked it. Was it perfect? Absolutly not. Was it like I wanted? Kind of but no. But it was satisfiying and it worked well, especially Edward's route (3-15 to 3-22)

I was a bit dissapointed that, even at the end, we didn't see much of Jesse, who is the book macguffin past chapter 1, but I know he's not the most important part of it so I rewrite this part in my head

However, I really enjoyed the focus on Lavinia and discovering other parts of her that aren't just mc's dead mom.

I liked Roger, but I felt like he overshadowed Priscilla who still doesn't do much beside being irritated at stuff... wich is a shame, I wanted to see more. The 'Angel outside the house' was a fun part for that but felt very out of mood for the book.

THE ARTIST WAS IMPORTANT i liked that call back

Now I understant why it was the best choice to say to Edward you were glad his brother died wtf

Yes I liked the twist that Edward was responsible for the epidemic all along I stand by that and I'll be defending this forever it made sense! I know a lot like Edward but what I liked was that he was a lying, manipulative, morally crooked with a weird life philosophy based on trauma and pseudo science!

Vincent's (or Jesse's?) route was not bad but kinda missed the oumf of Edward's route's climax. This route explained Roger's involvment and Vincent's past and the vampire part of the story, but Edward's explained waaaay more the new epidemic. Kinda wished there was a bit more balance (like with sacred beast where each route explained one element of the story)

I'm dissapointed that they didn't reuse the Jesse album art in other places that in the chapter 2 bad ending :( it was really good and could have fitted elsewhere, even in a not bad ending

THEY FORGOT THE BOOK!!!!

Like I said, wish we could have seen more of Jesse in chapter 3, because in Vincent's route, he doesn't appear after the showdown and I'm dissapointed.... At least he has a great conclusion in Edward's route's epilogue, like when he bids his farewell to him after explaining the pain he felt being perceived like that by his oldest friend.... the hand touch ;-;

Conclusion: It wasn't a bad ending, it was satisfiying for 90% of it. I think they did a good job (it still isn't ancient dream, but) it has a very special place in my heart and I can die in peace now

I'm a huge fan of how they package the dreamtopia mermaid dolls! Not a single tab holding her to the box! You rip it open with your bare hands and immediately get to hold your new Barbie.
