He hadn’t had any dreams. Which was odd because he had been dreaming erratically all week. Somehow dreamland had shut him off in those four hours of sleep. He got up and put his boxers and jeans on. When he opened the curtains there was a sallow sky with little bobbles of beauty on the few remaining leaves on the trees … and it’d been raining in violent bursts last night and the road was wet and grey.

His dog was barking downstairs in random mayhem. She had cancer of the thyroid and the vet ‘couldn’t do anything about’ the lump on her neck. He was the one who had raised the dog when she was a pup. And she always shrieked uncontrollably around other people, but never around him. She (the dog) changed after he went to university and lived in another city for five years. And he felt bad about leaving her behind. Because she wasn’t the same animal after that. When he went downstairs he stroked her warm head and she hushed up. Then he put his coat on and went up to the shop.

On the alleyway there was this man who was coming the other way who had a dog as well. He could never prevent the canine from getting angsty whenever a person got near, and had to keep a firm hold of the leash.

He walked past them politely and got to the back of the supermarket. There was a chap who worked in the supermarket, who was smoking a cigarette at the back gates. He had this massive Santa Claus beard, except it wasn’t snow white. He’d been working in the supermarket for about thirteen years. Not that there was anything wrong with this. Just an observation. Lots of people had to work shit jobs, just for money.

This didn’t feel like October. When he’d been a kid, it would never be this warm, four weeks into the month of October. It only felt like this time of year after he entered the supermarket and there were all of these pumpkins packed up in trays by the front door. Made you wonder how many millions of pumpkins were grown for this time of year – only for people to gut them and not even eat them.

He bought some red lentils and then he walked back home again. On the way he passed the man with the weird suburban history – the guy with liver damage who walked on a zimmer frame these days. What made it all the more ironic was that he (the strange man) always used to be hugely athletic, biking around everywhere.

Back home, he put on this film that a friend had recommended he watch. It was a biopic about this famous man in America. You’ll know his name. The movie followed the earlier days of the man’s life – how he ‘rose up’ in terms of national publicity. And when he watched it, it was quite hard to take the movie for what it was … because it wasn’t fiction; it was real life.

He had people he used to know in school who were right horrible people; and he had shit mates in the past who had abandoned him: and there were many folk who were totally toxic and were capable of horrific deeds as well. But, none of them were as bad as this man.

The movie got him thinking, on different levels. And it was one of those affairs where it only got worse by the end. And he was glad that he was not like the man that the biopic was based on.

After that he put on a film that he’d seen a thousand times before. Set in the jungle. With many insane, mystic moments.

And alongside that he thought he’d do a few poems. Meh, just a few snippets. Nothing serious.

He checked the news and it only made him blue. Years back, he used to buy the newspaper every day. But the content in modern times had sickened him into avoidance … or, rather, it was simpler to follow current affairs online, now and then, just to have a vague idea of what was happening on the planet. With the grimness being that these channels only told you the worst things – concentrated on all the negative bits.

So he’d stopped buying the little newspapers around two years back and he read fiction these days. Fiction and poetry – as much as he could. To force words and opinions into his mind. He just read anything he could obtain. And there was something methodical and medicinal about going to the library and borrowing new books, about discovering different writers he’d never heard of before.

That was what was magic about fiction. That you could read for different reasons. And, of course, fiction was often negative as well. Just like the news was. But the literature made you observe content in alternate ways. It didn’t make you want to give up: it made you wish to persevere.

And so he read for a while. This particular novel was about social media and the chaotic content that appeared throughout its international annals. Some of the things people posted on the internet were staggering.

He had a trip the next day. Was going to Europe. So he needed to get a nap in before waking up later on for the flight. He ate some lentil soup and some bits of bread. And lay down to rest for a few hours: having stacked up his phone with alarms, lest he sleep in and miss his flight. He was always terrified he would miss his aeroplane, even though it’d never happened before.

And after forty minutes or so, he woke up, in semi consciousness, and thought about his uncle who had died last month. It was crazy to think that he was actually dead and was never coming back. And this made him think about how his own body was never going to operate forever, either: that he would perish one day.

But for now he still had a heartbeat. And so he headed back to rest: trusting in the void of sleep.

I think people need to realize that they’re looking at Joe’s projects with a microscope. Paul had Foe and Carmen last year which were both horrible movies. But they didn’t really get any promo and no one watched them. So people focused on All of us strangers which was a good movie that he actually got to promote. Most people aren’t aware of Joe’s worst movies and will only really remember things like KOK and The Favourite. When you only hear about what actors are doing from other people, you only hear about the good stuff. People will talk about Margot producing and starring in I, Tonya and Barbie so it sounds like everything she does is successful but she also produced and starred in a movie called Dreamland that was apparently pretty bad and that I only found out about because I was following a Margot Stan account during the pandemic when the movie came out

yeah and then those same people turn around and say no one pays any attention to him while like… obsessed with his every move. Fucking nuts lol. Idk I’ve been into film/actors since I was like 12 and I know people make good movies and bad movies and when people I’ve been a fan of made bad movies like usually as fans we have a chuckle and move on? Or stop being fans if it’s a string of shit we don’t like? I’ve never in 20 years online witnessed what these people do to Joe lol and I can’t imagine they do it to any other actor because then they’d know like there are some real duds now and then? I actually will say one of the worst things about being a Joe fan is none of it has ever been so bad it’s funny ykwim like he’s made meh films but they’re all mid at worst which is a pity because truly dreadful shit can be very fun.

I watched Dreamland (2019)

(This is the Canadian Dreamland from 2019. Not the Margot Robbie Dreamland from 2019-2020)

Considered a spiritual successor to Pontypool, or maybe just the after-credits-scene of Pontypool.

A hitman, sent to take the pinky finger of a jazz musician, ends up saving a child bride from her fate of marrying a vampire. Yes, it's confusing.

I have a high tolerance for artsy weird shit. So, when I found out that the Director of Pontypool and it's two leads had re-teamed to make a weird art house flick, I had to see it.

Online it's a "Love it or Hate it" movie. So much so that I read two separate reviews on Roger Ebert's website. One shining, one detesting, Dreamland is a movie that is definitely not the norm and maybe not very good.

The strangeness starts with Stephen McHattie playing two separate roles. It then continues with odd editing, confusing and slow narrative progression, a dreamy atmosphere. OH, And a story that includes child trafficking, a hitman, a Jazz musician, child assassins, and a full on fucking vampire.......Yes, a vampire.

Around the first half-hour I realized this movie might not turn the corner to greatness. The first action sequence, between McHattie and one of Henry Rollins' toy soldier looking female guards, was so terribly executed it would have been better not to film it. But, it's not exactly an action movie, so I forgave it. Then the vampire showed up and the movie slid into a rather comic tone. Then it slid back into a serious tone. Then back to comedy, and so on. What was happening? What key factor was I missing? What was director Bruce McDonald trying to get across to me. Was Dreamland an actual Dream? Was I enjoying watching it?

Well, truth is, I like that it's completely unexpected at points. It has a real "fuck you, I don't care what you think" attitude. I liked that I wasn't bored, even if I was spending time trying to solve a mystery without an answers. I enjoyed that it just might be a Jazz style of filmmaking that's playing all the wrong notes.

Of course, I believe my enjoyment to be indefensible. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone, because ultimately it's kind of a failure of a film. There's a lot here that just isn't good enough. But, I liked the mess it made.

Mi è piaciuto particolarmente Stephen Dinh nei panni di Joe, l'amico indiano americano di Gene che cerca la sua via d'uscita, e Joe Berryman come lo sceriffo locale dagli occhi penetranti che mangia BS a colazione. C'è una sequenza fantastica in cui Gene esce per dare un'occhiata alle prove che la polizia ha contro Allison mentre tutti sono a un ballo di città, mentre un veterano esegue un hamburger energico - colpi percussivi sulle ginocchia e simili - fornendo la musica che crea tensione sotto. Meraviglioso. Sembra che manchino alcune parti del film, un po 'più del retroscena di Allison e più sul desiderio di Gene che la memoria di suo padre riempia il tessuto connettivo. In un momento in cui ripeto costantemente quanti film sono troppo lunghi, eccone uno bello che aveva bisogno di un po 'più di grasso sulle ossa.

“Dreamland” precisava de uma estrela de cinema, e conseguiu uma em Margot Robbie.

O filme, em cinemas selecionados e disponível para transmissão a partir de terça-feira, 17 de novembro, se passa em 1934, durante o Dust Bowl, em uma pequena cidade rural que seria sombria mesmo nos melhores tempos. No domingo, toda a cidade vai à igreja, não necessariamente porque todos são religiosos, mas porque é o único show da cidade. E a igreja é praticamente a única construção da cidade. Bem-vindo ao No Place, cercado por lugar nenhum.

Finn Cole (“Peaky Blinders”) interpreta Eugene, um adolescente que sonha com algo mais. Em um ambiente que pode matar o espírito de qualquer pessoa, ele tem algumas ideias românticas sobre o que a vida poderia ser. Então, milagrosamente, romance e aventura vêm até ele quando ele entra no celeiro e encontra Allison Wells, interpretada por Robbie, escondida lá.

Allison, no entanto, é uma mulher procurada em todo o estado por assalto a banco e assassinato. Ela está ferida, desesperada e perigosa, e de repente ele tem uma escolha: ele pode denunciá-la e, no processo, virar as costas para seu destino ou pode jogar a mão que o destino deu a ele.

O importante é que “Dreamland” cumpra o seu propósito principal, que é fazer-nos investir nesta estranha história de amor. Para o mundo exterior, Allison é uma pessoa má que precisa ser eliminada. Mas de dentro da ilusão do filme - uma ilusão da qual nós, como espectadores, compartilhamos - Allison e Eugene são as únicas pessoas que estão vivas, e todos os outros são mortos-vivos.

Na verdade, começa a parecer que a razão pela qual a sociedade civil está tão decidida a matar Allison é que ela está viva e, portanto, uma ameaça. É como se a existência dela provasse a falta de existência deles. Isso não é realmente verdade, mas é assim que acabamos nos sentindo e é como os personagens se sentem.

Assim que o diretor Miles Joris-Peyrafitte nos levar a esse lugar, ele poderá fazer qualquer coisa conosco, porque estamos com Allison e Eugene. Não os estamos observando à distância, mas vivenciando a história através de seus olhos. You were with him in his room while you both worked on different things. It was getting late and you were getting sleepy because of the calm and soft music being played from Hongjoong's speakers. You yawned and folded your laptop. He felt you changing positions, snuggling up to him and wrapped his arm around you, kissing the top of your head. He whispered his good night and let you drift off to sleep. The next morning, he surprised you with a short and sweet instrumental he composed while you were asleep, sadly he wasn't able to fully commit to sleep that night and knocked out the morning after.

◆ PARK SEONGHWA ◆

You were already fast asleep in his warm and welcoming embrace that night. It was your birthday but you fell a little sick. So instead of going out to celebrate, Seonghwa brought the party to you. He had few things planned but you retired early. While you were sleeping, he sneakily prepared a late night dinner for you and his special chocolate drink. He surprised you in bed when you woke up, smiling bright like the stars seen in the night sky. Your smile got brighter and his laughter could be heard when he pulled out a box from under the bed. He had been the perfect boyfriend, helping you out with packing all of your things and even offering to go with you to see your parents on a 7 hour drive. You know better than anyone that Yunho was tired and insisted on driving despite him battering his eyelashes at you. You were doing great. 3 hours later was a breeze but soon your eyelids begin to drop. Noticing how sleepy you were getting, Yunho practically forced you to switch drivers as you sleep the rest of the ride. Once a while he'd glance over to you sleeping with the seat pushed back down and curled into a ball, always monitoring the temperature of the ac to your body so you never got too cold or too hot.

Falling asleep on the couch of his living room after watching a horror film was a mistake on your part, even if you had your eyes covered 80% of the times. Because now you were scared and very sensitive to your surroundings, something Yeosang knew and took advantage of. Behind your back, he slipped on his green clown costume and tiptoed right in front of your face. He tapped your shoulder and you nearly had a heart attack that very night. Rumours about the building being haunted were the cause of your frightened screaming. Yeosang only wished he had the whole fiasco filmed. You'll get your revenge soon enough. Yeosang had better watch his back.

◆ CHOI SAN ◆

Finals week are stressful for anyone and you were no different. As the top student, it wasn't that you weren't confident in yourself but you were stressed over having to teach your boyfriend, the figure covered in tattoos and a lip piercing who didn't care as much as you did. Quick to think, he grabbed your wrist and urged you onto his bike. San believes that what you needed was a refresher, something being on his bike would do the trick. He was right. The cool night breeze was relaxing and you nearly fell asleep on his back - so he had to stop and let you sleep on his shoulder on top of the hill over looking the night city and lights.

◆ SONG MINGI ◆

So lets count how many plushies you had on your bed. A lot, more than you expected. Mingi had asked you out on a date, a date to the amusement park. Hours spent on your feet going on different rides and all. Before going home, you suggested to leave the park with souvenirs and invited him to play one of those shooting down the target booth games. Needless to say, you both were good at the game and kept winning rounds. Pink, purple, yellow, blue, green, you name it and there was a plushie in that colour. Too tired to think about how you'd put them away, fatigue took over both bodies and you ended up cuddling the plushies to sleep beside each other.

◆ JUNG WOOYOUNG ◆

Things needed to be perfect and it couldn't go wrong. You worked hard today, running around the city from places to places and purchasing things you needed to celebrate your 2 year anniversary with Wooyoung. You've set up everything but the only problem was that he was running late. You played hype songs to make yourself stay awake but you still fell asleep and he saw that. In a time of general uncertainty and anxiety, one thing that is certain is that weird fiction/cosmic horror has got your back. If you like to combat your growing sense of existential dread by reading about other people’s growing sense of existential dread, this is a list for you. Where texts and shows are available online, I have included links. Where they are not, I have included links to where they are available to buy.

Books

Agents of Dreamland – Caitlin R Kiernan

Government agents, ritual murders, a doomsday cult and a glitch in NASA’s interplanetary probe all feature in this deeply frightening and deftly written novella that takes classic Lovecraftian tropes and expands on them with mesmerising skill.

Wanderers – Chuck Wendig

When a sleepwalking epidemic hits America, those affected head towards a destination known only to themselves. Desperate to keep their loved ones safe, ‘shepherds’ follow the growing group to protect them on their journey. This is an incredibly rewarding read stuffed full of complex characters, apocalyptic horror and a long hard look at human nature.

Winter Tide – Ruthanna Emrys

After the government raid on Innsmouth, Aphra and Caleb Marsh are the only inhabitants of the town to survive the desert internment camps. When confidential, dangerous magic is stolen from Miskatonic University, the FBI are forced to turn to the last of the Marsh’s for help. An evocative and sympathetic novel that takes the antagonists of Lovecraft’s works and paints them in a new light.

The Fisherman – John Langan

This is considered to be a modern classic of the genre and for good reason. It’s best to go into this one as blind as possible so I’ll just leave you with this little quote: "I know Dutchman's Creek runs deep, much deeper than it could or should, and I don't like to think what it's full of."

Carter and Lovecraft – Jonathan L. Howard

A homicide detective turned Private Investigator finds himself embroiled with the last known descendant of H.P Lovecraft, Emily Lovecraft. When deaths that have an eerie resemblance to the writing of Emily’s ancestor begin to plague the area, the investigator finds himself drawn into a world he thought didn’t exist beyond fiction.

Rosewater – Tade Thompson

The first in an award-winning trilogy that blends science fiction into the weird in near future Nigeria. When an alien biodome manifests in the landscape, a select group of people in the surrounding area begin developing psychic abilities. A winding, disturbing tale with an original setting, voice and characters; this is the perfect read for those looking for a fresh take on the genre.  

North American Lake Monsters: Stories – Nathan Ballingrud

I am hugely obsessed with this – Ballingrud uses tropes and characters we are all familiar with and uses them to tell stories that shed light on the plight of rural, poverty-stricken America. He is a masterful author with a true gift for atmospheric writing (‘Late summer pressed onto this small Mississippi coastal town like the heel of a boot. The heat was an act of violence.’) and this collection will appeal to fans of Ligotti and Barron as well as those who are unfamiliar with the genre.

The Ballad of Black Tom – Victor LaValle

This is essentially a retelling of Lovecraft’s The Horror at Red Hook (but without the blatant racism, hooray!). A slow burn, cosmic horror noir featuring a who’s who of the Cthulhu Mythos, for those interested in the genre who do not get on with Lovecraft’s writing or the man himself, this is an excellent way to get all the good stuff without the bad.

Anthologies

A Lonely and Curious Country: Tales from the land of Lovecraft

Seventeen stories about Lovecraftian horrors in the most unusual of places. Lots of these work as mini-sequels to Lovecraft’s original stories so this is a good companion for those familiar with his work.

Lovecraft Unbound

As I’ve said before, Ellen Datlow is a powerhouse of anthology editing. Featuring a great spread of familiar mythos faces and more thematic takes on the genre, Lovecraft Unbound is one of the best collections out there.

Book of Cthulhu

There are a couple of these! All feature some of the best contemporary authors writing weird fiction. Quality of individual stories sometimes varies in Lovecraftian anthologies but that is not the case here. The first is particularly good as it also contains stories from older, more obscure writers who are hard to get in print.

Shadows of Carcosa

Twelve short stories that feature everything from the land of carcosa to the traditionally Lovecraftian setting of the cursed hills of New England. All of these are shorts written by classic writers such as Poe, Stoker, Bierce, Chambers and Blackwood.

Lovecraft’s Monsters

Another collection edited by Datlow. This one is particularly fun as it features illustrations, as well as a story by Neil Gaiman. Lovecraft’s Monsters is amongst my favourite of the anthologies as it is based solely around the creatures that crawl and squirm through the mythos. It’s also available as an audiobook!

Children of Lovecraft

Fourteen short stories including authors like Stephen Graham Jones, Orrin Grey, Caitlin R. Kiernan and Livia Llewellyn. Full of body horror, dread, surrealism and one of the best opening sentences to any short story.

She Walks in Shadows

A monumental, fascinating collection comprised of exclusively female authors. Offering a long overdue look at and development of the female aspects of the mythos, this collection gives a voice to the previously unheard. For those looking for a diverse, original and often deeply disturbing reading experience, this is your anthology.

Weird Fiction Review is an excellent resource for online fiction – both excerpts from books and stand-alone short stories.

TOR.COM is an amazing resource for all kinds of science fiction and fantasy shorts. This is a link specifically to Lovecraftian fiction. There’s also lots of interesting things to read under the tag cosmic horror here.

Graphic Novels

Fatale - Sex, violence, cults, cosmic horror, imaginative period settings and gorgeous artwork. Fatale is one of the best comics set in the mythos out there.

Locke and Key - Many of you will be familiar with Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s hugely popular (and now televised) series focused on a house above a portal to the plains of Leng.

Harrow County - Creepy, rural-based, folk horror series centred on a young woman who finds herself to be joined to the forest and the land in ways she could never have imagined.

The Squidder - A postapocalyptic Lovecraftian mess, I have included this because it is worth buying for the artwork alone. Ben Templesmith is an acquired taste but an incredibly talented illustrator whose work is uniquely suited to the mythos.

I have talked about these several times before but it is always worth checking out I.N.J Culbard’s graphic novel adaptations of Lovecraft’s stories, as well as the two anthologies that were released several years ago.

FEATURE: The 6 Best Books On The History Of Manga And Anime

  Say you’re a fan of anime and manga who’s looking to learn more about history or craft. Where do you begin? There’s whatever insight you can glean from the work itself, of course. There’s also a good amount of information available online, from animation blogs to translated manga interviews to personal pieces. But when all else fails, turn to the library. Here are some excellent nonfiction books on the manga and anime industry that I’d recommend to just about anybody. I’ve also read at least sections of every book on this list, so you have my guarantee of their quality!

  Pure Invention: How Japan's Pop Culture Conquered the World reaches beyond manga and anime to encompass Japanese pop culture post World War II. But there are plenty of stories in here that fans of anime and manga might find fascinating: 

  The toy car that inspired top developers at Nintendo

How the karaoke machine led directly to idol culture, as music producers sought to produce music that ordinary people could sing

The manga-obsessed student radicals of the 1960s, many of whom came to work on later anime projects like Mobile Suit Gundam

  Author Matt Alt’s choice of interviewees and attention to detail marks Pure Invention as one of the best of its kind. If you’re a curious reader looking for an accessible (and recent!) popular history, I highly recommend this book.

  For fans abroad, the history of anime begins with the airing of Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy on Japanese television. But this wasn’t enough for Jonathan Clements, a long-time anime and manga scholar who continues to blog on Schoolgirl Milky Crisis. His academic text Anime: A History begins in the 1910s, 50 years before the airing of Astro Boy, in fact, Astro Boy only appears halfway through the book! Clements is concerned not just with the medium of anime itself, but the cultural traditions, historical events, and individual people that brought it into existence.

  One of the greatest obstacles standing in the way of English-speakers seeking to understand the history of Japanese animation — besides, as Clements notes, the haphazard nature of even those resources available in Japanese — is the language barrier. Online writers at sites such as Sakugablog have done fantastic work in making some of this information accessible, but those same writers would be the first to acknowledge there’s still plenty we don’t know. Anime: A History synthesizes countless Japanese-language source texts and interviews about the history of animation, yet Clements is careful to acknowledge that the testimony of individual actors within the industry must be weighed against both their own agenda and the words of others. While Anime: A History would be a valuable text if it was nothing more than a synthesis, Clements’ ambition to build a coherent history of Japanese animation from a production standpoint that thoroughly examines its subject matter and context from all angles is what makes it essential.

  Jonathan Clements collaborated with equally prestigious anime and manga scholar Helen McCarthy to produce The Anime Encyclopedia, whose third edition was published in 2015. It’s an enormous text (over a thousand pages long!) that covers everything from summaries and critical appraisals of popular titles to specific themes and tropes to nuggets of cultural history and influence. If I were to criticize this project, I would say that recent anime writing outside the United States exposes The Anime Encyclopedia’s biases; for instance, the magical girl series Ojamajo Doremi only merits a few paragraphs despite its status as a beloved children's series in Japan. Keeping that in mind, it’s an impressive resource that is great fun to browse (and to disagree with)!

  Mari Okada is one of the most prolific and influential anime writers of the past decade. She’s worked on adaptations, original projects like Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and KIZNAIVER, and even directed her own films. In her memoir, From Truant to Anime Screenwriter, Okada frankly discusses her personal struggles: her fraught relationship with her mother, her years as a young student when she couldn’t bring herself to attend class, and the process by which she gathered her courage to touch upon her personal experiences in her work. There are chapters of this book that wouldn’t be out of place in an Okada-written drama, which I suppose is the point.

  Okada’s memoir is in part a testament to her work ethic and her willingness to tackle any challenge no matter how difficult or annoying it is. But it’s also a rosetta stone for her work: not just in how it overlaps with her personal life, but in its emphasis on the importance of communication despite how difficult it can be to voice even simple feelings. Whether you’re a fan of Okada or not, I found this to be a great resource for writers nervous of the fraught boundary between fiction and personal experience or for readers who want to know what makes Okada’s work so distinct.

  Frederik Schodt is one of manga criticism’s greatest elder statesmen. His book Manga! Manga! put him on the map, not only for its editorial content but also for its translated excerpts of Japanese comics — including what would be, for years, the only available English chapter of Rose of Versailles! Yet that book was published in 1983 and sections can’t help but read as dated now. So I’m recommending the sequel here, 1996’s Dreamland Japan. 

  Like its predecessor, much of Dreamland Japan is devoted to detailing Schodt’s theories as to what manga is and how it works. But the sections of the book I personally find most valuable are the profiles where Schodt writes at length about specific manga artists he either personally enjoys or believes to embody a specific genre unique to manga. The freakish kitsch of Suehiro Maruo; Ryoko Yamagishi’s historical epic Hi Izuru Tokoro no Tenshi (Emperor of the Land of the Rising Sun); and alternative artists like Kazuichi Hanawa and Shungicu Uchida. These chapters stand as a stark reminder that despite the recent popularity of manga in the United States, many fantastic comics remain completely unknown to most English-speaking audiences.

  Finally, there’s Udagawa Takeo’s Manga Zombie! Translated into English by John Gallagher, it’s an eccentric and rewarding text that profiles several avant-garde manga artists from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Udagawa strongly dislikes the market-driven manga hits that would go on to rule the world from the pages of Shonen Jump and fights instead for the careers of authors whose work was published in the pages of pornographic magazines as often as they were in Jump or the alternative magazine Garo. Most of these authors have never been published in English, whether officially or through illicit means like scanlations. If not for the translation of Manga Zombie — or for Udagawa’s further works of manga scholarship — the artists he writes about might vanish into history without leaving a trace.

  The comics detailed in Manga Zombie can be grotesque, ranging from the “fleshbomb style” of artists like Masaru Sakaki to prescient weirdos like George Takiyama. Some might be repelled by the content here; personally, I’m disappointed by the lack of female comics artists featured, although Udagawa (who mentions the girls comic pioneers the 49ers in the foreword to his book) is certainly aware of them. But I love reading folks talking about their favorite work that I’ve never heard about, and Udagawa makes for an idiosyncratic tour guide to some truly unique material. For those willing to brave the world of Japanese exploitation comics, Manga Zombie is a hidden gem.

Knock. Knock knock. Knock knock knock knock. Knock knock knock knock knock-

“I’m awake! I’m coming!” You were rudely awakened by the sound of knocking on your apartment door that grew faster and louder with every moment it remained locked. 

ou couldn’t even remember the lovely dream you’d been in the middle of. Your back did ache from falling asleep on the couch watching late-night TV to ease the stress that Victor’s demands caused you. You were in just a big tee shirt you’d snagged from your boyfriend, Kiro, the last time he was actually there. He’d been out of the country filming for a few weeks so the shirt no longer had his smell lingering in the fabric. 

To say that you were cranky was a gross understatement. If it wasn’t an emergency, you were ready to commit murder. You were exhausted. What kind of person bangs on someone’s door at...2:15 a.m.? It was too early! Late? Whatever! It was not the time to be awakened. You wanted to go back to dreamland, not be awake where your deadlines loomed over your head.

The knocking continued but much softer. Whoever it was at the door must have heard your raspy, sleepy shout. The lights in the hallway made it hard for your sleep ridden eyes to really see who it was through the peephole. You were certain you saw the sunny hair of a certain superstar. 

You yawned as you unlocked and opened the door. All sleep was forgotten at the sight before your eyes. Kiro, bruised and bleeding, stood in front of your door. His eyes sang apologies as he stumbled inside with you locking up behind him. You fumbled for the light switch, all tiredness was forgotten. 

“Kiro.” You sat him down on your couch. “Kiro, what happened to you?”

Your limbs still felt heavy as you rushed about. You gathered the things you needed. Your first aid kit, some rubbing alcohol, and a washcloth you wet down at the bathroom sink. 

“Ha...” Kiro groaned, pushing his shoes off. “Mx. Chips. I’m so sorry to wake you. Guess even superstars can get jumped.”

He flinched as you cleaned his face. The blood needed to be cleared so you could properly clean with the alcohol. You needed to see the actual wounds. Your poor Kiro. Savin would have a heart attack when he found out. You knew that going to the hospital for Kiro could be dangerous. Well, publicity-wise. Someone could snap photos and post them online with false captions, not even knowing the story. It could easily ruin him.

“I was really, really hungry. I just got back from filming a couple of hours ago. Savin wanted me to stay in a hotel until the morning, but I wanted to come here to you,” he explained. He hissed in pain when you began cleaning the wounds on his face with rubbing alcohol.

“I’m sorry, Kiro. I promise I’ll get you some ice once I’m done.” Seeing him hurt like this broke your heart. Your bright sunflower was damaged. 

“I went to the first 24-hour convenience store I could find. I had my mask and hat on. Clearly not anymore. These guys were in an alley outside when I was leaving and they jumped me. Wanted any money I had. Luckily, Savin banned me from my credit cards because of my snacking habits so I only had cash. They beat me up more when they got a good look at me, guess they thought I was holding out on them. I can’t really remember. My feet carried me here to you.”

After putting some antibiotic ointment on his open wounds you covered them with bandaids and patches. Seeing him in such a state broke you. You wanted to cry because he was hurt. He must have seen tears welling up in your eyes because his face contorted from pain to panic.

“Mx. Chips, please don’t cry! Please, I’m fine! Superhero Kiro will be good as new in no time, you’ll see!” It pained him to try and smile. Luckily no teeth were missing otherwise Savin would have an even bigger panic. 

You sniffed and held back your tears. “I’ll go get you that-”

“No, please stay with me. Can we go to bed?” His hands trembled as he grasped at yours. 

Your face softened and you helped him stand up. “Of course, sunflower.” You helped him to your room and went back to clean up and turn out the lights. He had stripped his pants, socks, and shirt off by the time you got back. Usually, he slept in pajamas but tonight he was just going to sleep in his boxers. You could tell he was trying his best to act tough.

After turning off the bedroom light you crawled into your bed next to him. His arms wrapped around you in an instant. All he wanted to do was hold you until he fell asleep. If he could fall asleep. You both knew that Savin would have to be told later on. Kiro needed to go to a private doctor to be properly checked out. You did the best you could but you were no doctor. Usually, it was Kiro that would sing you to sleep. That night, though, you were the one who sung him to sleep.

3. Sumba

Sama seperti Labuan Bajo, Sumba adalah pulau yang termasuk ke dalam Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur. Sumba berbatasan dengan Sumbawa, Flores, Timor, dan Australia.

Masyarakat Sumba secara rasial merupakan campuran dari ras Mongoloid dan Melanesoid. Sebagian besar penduduknya menganut kepercayaan animisme Marapu dan agama Kristen, baik Protestan maupun Katolik. Kaum muslim dalam jumlah kecil dapat ditemukan di sepanjang kawasan pesisir. (Sumber: Wikipedia).

Pengen banget ke Sumba, awalnya ngeliat di Instagram banyak selebgram yang ngelakuin Photoshoot di sana dan bagus banget!

Makin mau banget setelah nonton film Humba Dreams, film karya anak bangsa, harus ditonton! Recommended sih itu filmnya, seperti film dokumenter, tapi dikemas dengan baik mulai dari video, musik, dan jalan ceritanya. Film ini berkisah tentang seorang mahasiswa film asal Sumba yang kuliah di Jakarta dan harus pulang ke kampung halamannya.

Namanya Martin, dia berasal dari Waingapu, Humba Timur. Dia harus pulang ke rumah karena dapat pesan dari Ayahnya yang udah lama meninggal. Pesan itu disampaikan sama salah seorang yang memiliki “ilmu” di sana, seperti dukun gitu. Ayahnya menyimpan wasiat di sebuah kotak, isinya roll film yang harus dicuci biar bisa ditonton sama orang-orang di sana.

Dalam film ini banyak diperlihatkan budaya orang-orang di Sumba, banyak diperlihatkan juga keadaan, serta hubungan baik yang terjalin sesama warga. Rasa tolong menolongnya tinggi, kekeluargaannya erat, tapi banyak fasilitas yang kurang. Seperti susahnya cari internet dan bensin. Ah pokoknya harus nonton deh, bagus serius. Bisa ditonton di Netflix. Dan semoga kelak bisa ke Sumba beneran, ga cuma liat dari film.

4. Inggris

Sebagai penggemar Harry Potter, rasanya mau banget ke England buat city tour, ngeliat gedung-gedung yang mirip seperti di film Harry Potter. Sampai punya cita-cita buat kuliah di London atau di Oxford biar bisa ke sana dan tinggal selama beberapa tahun.

Pengen banget ngeliat Big Ben secara langsung, naik London Eye, keliling-keliling kota Oxford, visiting The Bodleian Library as the main research library of the University of Oxford, and one of the oldest libraries in Europe, pokoknya  jalan-jalan keliling Inggris ga cuma ke dua kota itu kalau bisa.

5. Jepang

Hal pertama yang pengen dilakukan kalau ke Jepang adalah buat city tour juga. Pengen coba makanan dan jajanan khas di sana secara langsung dari tempat asalnya. I love japanese food. Emang otaknya makanan mulu :)

Selain buat jajan, aku pengen beli barang-barang unik dan lucu di sana. Jalan-jalan keliling kota.

Pengen juga naik Shinkansen dan transportasi lainnya yang canggih-canggih di sana.

Selain city tour, pengen juga ke desa-desanya kayak yang ada di anime-anime. Keliatannya asri, bersih, rapih, duh mau! Salah satunya mau banget ke Hokkaido. Nabung dulu aja deh.

6. Korea

Pecinta Drama Korea mana yang ga mau ke Korea?!

Mau banget!! Pengen ke Seoul, keliling-keliling berburu skin care Korea dari Koreanya langsung. Pengen nyobain street food-nya yang suka ada di adegan drama. Pengen coba kuliner-kuliner di sana, biarpun di Indonesia juga udah banyak, tapi tetep beda kan.

Foto di atas itu foto Kota Seoul, kalau nonton Drama The King: Eternal Monarch pasti tau pas scene Raja pertama kali ke Seoul. Raja tampan yang diperankan sama Lee Min Ho.

Pulau Jeju juga jadi tempat yang sering muncul di Drama Korea. Pemandangannya indah, orang-orang banyak yang melepas penat di pantainya. Yuk kesana!

7. Netherland

Holland in Netherland became one of places that I wanna go, simply because I love cakes and breads from Holland Bakery.

Lucu aja gitu ada kincir anginnya, jadi pengen liat kincir angin asli di Holland. Juga mau main ke taman bunga tulipnya, cantik banget ga sih??

Dan lagi-lagi aku mau city tour! Keliling Holland buat ambil foto bangunan-bangunan di sana, sukaaa! Bisa ga ya naik kapalnya juga?

8. Maldives

Maldives merupakan sebuah pulau kecil di Asia Selatan yang terletak di sebelah selatan-barat daya India, sekitar 700 km sebelah barat daya Sri Langka. (Sumber: Wikipedia).

Punya cita-cita pengen ke Maldives sejak nonton Vlognya Arief Muhammad yang waktu itu lagi honeymoon sama istrinya, Tiara Pangestika.

Enak banget resort-nya, pemandangannya, airnya juga jernih banget sama seperti yang di gambar, terus bisa keliling-keliling naik sepeda. Idaman banget buat honeymoon-nya orang males gerak.

9. New Zealand 

Bagus banget ya pemandangannya New Zealand? Pengen banget honeymoon atau liburan ke sana bareng temen-temen atau keluarga, keliling New Zealand naik Campervan. Seru banget kan bisa bener-bener quality time bareng, jadi lebih tau karakter masing-masing, dll.

Lagi-lagi awalnya karena ngeliat vlognya keluarga Belo: Ayudia, Ditto dan Sekala. Seneng banget ngeliat mereka liburan naik Campervan, keliatan hangat banget deh keluarga mereka, ditambah ada sekala yang ngegemesin.

Seneng banget ngeliat semuanya dilakuin sendiri, mulai dari nyetir, tempat tujuan terserah kita mau ke mana, belanja bahan makanan buat perjalanan dan tinggal di Campervan, tapi ga suka pas bagian harus ngebuang kotoran sendiri kalau kita buang air kecil atau besar di Campervan, ew.

10. Nepal

Nepal merupakan salah satu negara di Asia Selatan, terletak di kawasan pegunungan Himalaya, Nepal berbatasan dengan Tiongkok (Daerah Otonomi Tibet) di sebelah utara dan India di barat, timur, dan selatan. (Sumber: Wikipedia).

Awalnya tertarik sama Nepal karena ngeliat Rachel Vennya sekeluarga liburan ke sana, duh bagus banget, budayanya kerasa masih kental banget!

Ditambah lagi belakangan ini baru nonton Twogether, reality show-nya Lee Seung-gi dan Jasper Liu yang berisi tentang perjalanan mereka keliling dunia buat ngejalanin misi demi ketemu fans-nya. Seru banget!

Nah ini beberapa tempat yang didatangi sama Seung-gi dan Jasper (tapi ga semuanya):

Kita bisa naik perahu di Phewa lake, juga di pulaunya ada sebuah kuil. Namanya Barahi.

Barahi Temple, known as a temple of marriage. It’s said that ur love will come true if you go round offering chicken or duck.

Di acara Twogether, Seung-gi dan Jasper dikasih misi harus menang main karambol ngelawan 2 orang warga lokal. Di sini aku baru tau kalau karambol merupakan permainan tradisionalnya Nepal, tapi juga tersebar ke berbagai negara.

Kathmandu, Ibu kota Nepal, juga merupakan kota terbesar di Nepal. Banyak tempat wisata yang bisa dikunjungi di sini.

Bhaktapur memiliki budaya yang berasal dari 3 kerajaan, yaitu Kathmandu, Patan, dan Bhaktapur, dari Dinasti Malla yang berkembang sejak abad ke-15 hingga ke-18. Kota ini terdaftar sebagai situs warisan dunia.

Terdapat juga pusat tembikar di Bhaktapur yang dibuat dengan oyo cha (tanah liat berkualitas tinggi). Oyo cha dikenal sebagai tanah liat dewa.

Sebenernya masih banyak tempat-tempat yang mau banget dikunjungin. Cuma ini aja udah panjang banget dan pegel juga ternyata. Tapi seneng!
