A miniature flying dragon!
This species is a Five-banded gliding lizard (Draco quinquefasciatus).
This medium-sized gliding lizard is found across southern Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra and Borneo, where it inhabits lowland primary rainforest. It is recognized by the five dark bands across the olive green dorsum and orange patagium, which is the wide flap of skin supported by ribs extending from the sides of its body. This species has the ability to glide from tree to tree by stretching the patagium.

FIVE BANDED GLIDING LIZARD Draco quinquefasciatus
Draco is a genus of agamid lizards that are also known as flying lizards, flying dragons or gliding lizards. These lizards are capable of gliding flight; their ribs and their connecting membrane may be extended to create "wings" (patagia- similar to flying squirrels), the hindlimbs are flattened and wing-like in cross-section, and a flap on the neck (the gular flag) serves as a horizontal stabilizer (the flag is sometimes used in warning to others).
Draco are arboreal insectivores.
While not capable of powered flight they often obtain lift in the course of their gliding flights. Glides as long as 60 m (200 ft) have been recorded, over which the animal loses only 10 m (33 ft) in height, which is quite some distance, considering that these lizards are only around 20 cm (7.9 in) in total length (tail included).
They are found in South Asia and Southeast Asia, and are fairly common in forests, gardens, teak plantations and shrub jungle.

Oil on aluminium, pt 1 (aka how smooth can we go?)
Oil on copper has a rich history, but copper's expensive and I had some aluminium sheeting lying around, so for initial experiments in 'how smooth can a surface be while still retaining paint' I'm using the latter, and trialling a few different techniques.
All three surfaces are cut from the same aluminium sheet (iirc about .6mm thick), which is thin enough to be cut with household scissors if you don't mind blunting them a bit, or with tin snips. They were then glued onto wood backing (13cm diameter) and polished with steel wool to get rid of scratches and provide a very slight tooth. This also smooths down any jagged edges.
The paint used is water-soluble oil, which handles more or less like traditional oil unless thinned with water.
1. A five-lined dragon (Draco quinquefasciatus) -- a brunaille underpainting, to be followed by colour glazing. No medium between the oil and the metal, and very, very slippery. Did not take paint happily and couldn't not get paint mixed with thinning medium or oil to stick at all. Ended up massing a very thin coat of the appropriate tones over the initial graphite drawing, and painting a more detailed underpainting over that once it had dried.
2. Tricoloured parrotfinch (Erythrura tricolor) -- alla prima in transparent colours, over a mostly dry but tacky base coat of impasto medium with a graphite sketch traced onto the impasto base. Impasto base tugs on the paint and makes it hard to get a really thin smooth coat, but holds the paint well and allows for mixing on the aluminium. Further details tba once the initial layer dries.
3. Red strawberry finch (Amandava amandava) -- transparent colour wash over an sprayed-on acrylic varnish. Smoother and less grip than the impasto base, but without the same degree of paint lifting off again that occurs with the bare aluminium. Accepts a very thin layer of paint, so the shine of the aluminium shows through. Has the advantage of being able to work up a graphite sketch on the bare aluminium before laying down paint without smudging. Fine details tba in subsequent layers.
