Robards hadn’t told him what to expect, only that his man would approach him. “How long is this bloody speech, anyway? I’m meant to meet him during the second speech.” He sets his drink down on the bar, runs his hands through his hair. “I—I—no. No—I. No. No? No.” Draco turns to stare at Potter, who appears to be having a minor aneurysm. “Your—your cuff—no. You? No. You?” Potter babbles. “Potter?” Draco asks. “Do I need to find someone who cares enough to call for help?” “Your cufflinks,” Potter croaks. “They’re red.” “Why yes.” Draco admires the sharply-cut rubies, twisting them back and forth in the light. “I’ve become rather fond of these.” “I think…” Potter swallows. “I think…I need…help.” “I could’ve told you that,” Draco replies. He frowns, taking in Potter’s blotchy pallor. “You really don’t look good. Don’t die in front of me, or they’ll think I’ve done it.” “You’re…” Potter swallows again. “You’re…the key?” “I am?” Draco smirks. “I don’t know what sort of mental break you’re currently having, but I’m enjoying the direction it’s taking you. Go on, Potter.” He leans on the bartop. “You…and me…” Potter points between them. “We’re…together…” “Oh?” Draco asks, tilting his head.

His skills include breaking protective wards, brewing potions, spotting clues at crime scenes, and annoying Auror Potter during patrols. Unlike Potter, however, Draco's close-combat abilities lack efficiency. But he is determined to learn. He can't have that scarhead being too proud of himself.

“What is this?”

Harry walked into the kitchen, eyeing the clothes on the table with growing curiosity. Draco turned around, a cup of tea in his hands. He was wearing a costume that looked an oddly lot like the clothes of a character from that one video game he was currently addicted to.

“They’re your clothes for the party,” Draco said. He took a sip of his tea, clearly trying to hide the growing grin on his face.

“My clothes?”

“Yes, your clothes. For the cosplay party, remember?” Draco rolled his eyes. “Go put them on so I can help you with the finishing touches. We’re already late.”

Carefully, Harry took the clothes from the table, turning them around in his hand. “And what roles are we playing?”

Draco’s smile grew bigger, almost predatory, as he stepped closer. “We’re going as Kavetham.”

“Kav—who?”

Shaking his head fondly, Draco leaned closer and placed a soft kiss on Harry’s lips. “I’ll explain later,” he said, his breath ghosting over Harry’s face. He stepped back, placing his empty cup of tea in the sink. “Now, go put on those clothes.”

It doesn’t matter because these fictional characters have “no canon backstory”? Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you.

You… go to your Tumblr account, and you select… I don’t know, Regulus Black, as your favorite Marauder Era character, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about canon and characterization, but what you don’t know is that that character is not just a Slytherin, they’re not just a sad, rich boy, they’re not just a misunderstood teenager, they actually represent the institutionalized bigotry and oppression found in the real world.

You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that, in 2002, Draco Malfoy was the favorite Hot Topic model Death Eater, and then I think it was Severus Snape, wasn’t it?… who was played by fan-favorite Alan Rickman in the movies so people started conflating the character with their attraction the actor. 

And then Death Eater symbols quickly showed up in all the merchandise for sale. Then it filtered down through fan fiction and cosplay and trickled down into some tragic TikTok video where you, no doubt, stumbled upon it through the algorithm.

However, that character you call your favorite and then turned into an offensive stand-in for your own OC  represents the people who choose to oppress others and support terrorist actions, and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from  supporting the bigotry of the author when, in fact, you’re regurgitating offensive queer stereotypes and misogynistic talking points… from characters with no “canon backstory.”
