Sci-Fi Saturday: Dr. Cyclops

Week 20:

Rationale for Inclusion:

In looking over a list of science fiction films of the 1940s, most of the feature films were more horror than sci-fi: sequels to Universal Horror movies, dipped more into fantasy than science fiction, and/or re-hashes of the core story of Frankenstein. Narratives where science fiction didn't come conjoined with horror were mostly found in serials, like the Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials discussed last week. Across all formats, the mad scientist remained the mainstay of the genre.

Representative of this decade sci-fi cinema is this week's film, Dr. Cyclops (Dir. Ernest B. Schoedsack, 1940, USA). Mad scientist? Check. Horror paired with science fiction? Check.

On a technical level, however, Dr. Cyclops is a standout. It was the first science fiction film ever shot in 3-strip "glorious" Technicolor and one of the first sci-fi films to be nominated for a Best Special Effects Academy Award. These characteristics made it stand out and secure a spot on this survey. 

Reactions:

On a technical level, Dr. Cyclops did not disappoint. The Technicolor was vivid without being over the top, and my partner and I were both surprised by the quality of the visual effects. It was the first time on the survey where we found ourselves going "Oh, the effects are good" with no caveats, including but not limited to "for the era." Black and white cinematography can cover up a lot of sins when it comes to visual effects work, so the fact that we had this reaction to a color film was all the more notable to us.

An aspect of the film that took us by surprise, but in retrospect really should have been more obvious was how much of the film was based on the cyclops episode from Homer's Odyssey. The name "Dr. Cyclops" should have been a dead giveaway, but cyclopses are mythological creatures that existed prior to Homer's epic poem chronicling Odysseus's fraught trip home from the Trojan war, and their name has been applied to various works, characters, and vehicles without invoking the story of Polyphemus. Nevertheless, it wasn't until the bespectacled Dr. Thorkel (Albert Dekker) uses his experimental shrink ray on a group of unsuspecting scientists, and traps them in his lab, did the allusion sink in. Like Odysseus and his crew, despite their disadvantage in size, the scientists must use their cunning to blind their poorly visioned captor and escape. 

I was also amused to note that since Dr. Thorkel's shrink ray is powered by radium it means that, like The Invisible Ray (Dir. Lambert Hillyer, 1936, USA), Dr. Cyclops is a pre-Atomic Age atomic sci-fi film. Labeling a film as being "atomic sci-fi" will rapidly lose its novelty once we get to movies made during the Cold War, which is why I find examples of atomic energy figuring in science fiction narratives made prior to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 fascinating.

It also had not occurred to me until later that Dr. Cyclops would be the first film of this survey to deal with characters being miniaturized or shrinking. Using the survey as an excuse to watch The Incredible Shrinking Man (Dir. Jack Arnold, 1957, USA) and Fantastic Voyage (Dir. Richard Fleischer, 1966, USA) had occurred to me, but had I been thinking about shrinking people as a recurring sci-fi narrative, as I did killer brains, robots, and devolution, I would have included The Devil-Doll (Dir. Tod Browning, 1936, USA) in the survey too.

Oh well. I keep being reminded that when this project started it was meant as a representative survey and not a mission to watch every available science fiction film ever made. Still, I wish that I had given titles from the silent era through the 1940s the same attention I would later give films of the 1950s and 1960s.

I had a cute family of Halloween pumpkins but they rotten back in early October The void in my heart may be filled with the scenario of s/o the Rocky Horror fan, and Thorkell who has never heard of it Halloween night He sees his woman dressed as a weird butler. Not a horny witch or kitty as he would like. She has already prepared XXXXL stockings and corset. Nowhere to run. She seriously intends to realise her sick fantasies and show Thorkell a musical Suspense lmao

Oh, sorry for your family of pumpkins, recently I had to throw mine because was rotten too. Well, I love this request, when I was reading it (I was in class), I laughed a lot of and I had to dissimulate the giggles. Well, I haven’t watched the movie in its entirety, but I’ve seen the vast majority it. I say YES to Thorkell as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. I hope you like it, enjoy! 💕

THORKELL

Well, Thorkell has always liked Halloween, it’s a celebration in which he can go disguised as a real Viking and no one is going to look at him strangely. And well, is a great excuse to looks you very sexy, because, you know Halloween is the season in which the women can wear less clothes. But when you appear in the kitchen very quiet and Thorkell looks you, he thinks that a lunatic has sneaked in his house, later two blinks he realizes that it’s you. And the first words that emerge of his mouth is a “What the fuck, (Name)”. You aren’t a naughty girl, where’s the cleavage? Where is the leather? Where is the sexy costume? You become in a strange and disagreeable man. You wear a blonde wig, you make up very pale with big bags under your eyes, with a big and black suit. And pillow in your back.

“I thought you will wear a corset this time” he asks you, very confused.

Thorkell asks himself why are you wear with the costume yet, is very early to do it. But that thought doesn’t say in loud voice, because your smile, a malicious one, paint your lips. Thorkell suspects something but he doesn’t want believe it.

“There’s a corset, but not for me…” You answer, and show him a big and black corset.

Thorkell looks at the unique door, you’ve ambushed him in the worst room of the house, he’s far away of the principal door and he can’t escape from you. So, Thorkell knows he will have to fight in this battle (his mind reminds him that this fight has already lost it).

“I will not lose this battle” he says and approaches to you.

“We will see” you smile him.

Despite his height and muscular force, he gets to make you a feint and goes out from the kitchen, he runs through the corridor and you don’t make much effort to chase him, because when he’s in the middle of the living room, he realizes that the little table of tea isn’t, and the next that Thorkell feels is he’s hanging of a net. He tries to escape but he can’t. You enter in the living room laughing and you show him the socks and the corset.

“Come on, Thorkell, it will fun” you say.

Thorkell groans a lot and he finally asks you.

“What are you thinking”.

So you starts to explain him about the Rocky Horror Picture Show, about the movie, about the characters, about that it means for the trans community and whole collective. And you beg him to disguise himself about the doctor  Frank-N-Furter, and you will be his butler.

Well, Thorkell accepts with a condition: he will choose the couple costume the next year. Of, course you accepts. And this night, a giant Dr. Frank-N-Furter and a little Riff Raff walk through the streets under the full moon of Halloween.

What did you think of the new Vinland chapter? I think we're getting a mini arc with Sigurd, and it was cool to see Ylva again. Excited for the anime!

Haha, I was wondering when you’d pass by Anon. xD Thanks for all the VS questions (assuming it’s always you?), I hope we will both enjoy the anime. :3 I’m going to see the world premiere thanks to @thedarkestcrow​​! /(^3^)/

Anyway, as always, loved it! I’m really super fond of Sigurd personally, always was from the moment he had many friends who were ready to go to the end of the world for him (it spoke volumes of how good a man he is) and also…

…because he doesn’t love Gudrid, but damn if he’d let anyone do anything to his wife (who stabbed him by accident before running away lmao). 

Also, let’s not lie, the arc with him was pretty funny. xDD

Nah for real, I’m all for him confronting his dad about what he really wants to do, which is to become his own person: it was coming up ever since his introduction and it will probably also give Halfdan character development anyway, which is good (since Halfdan was like the first “bad guy", so to speak, who was used to put Thors on a high pedestal from the start).

It’s also a nice conclusion to this arc because no one during this arc knew who Halfdan was, but Sigurd ended up being the main reason why Thorkell’s side won the battle, which proved to him that he has skills and a good reason to be proud of who he is, independently from being his father’s son.

So in a way, obviously it arranges him that Gudrid would rather be with Thorfinn than him (it gives him a good reason not to come back as his father’s successor) and I loved how…

…Ylva feels terrible about her baby brother “stealing” someone else’s wife (she wanted him to settle but “not like that”). xDD 

Overall I loved this arc because I wasn’t expecting the weirdest love triangle ever to be written at all, nor for Thorfinn and Sigurd to foil each other so much, on top of the mutual respect that they have gained for each other thanks to it…

Besides, giving Sigurd character development matters a great deal in the first place because Halfdan is kinda financing Thorfinn’s project for Vinland: Sigurd chased after him for a while, experienced a lot and finally chose to support Thorfinn’s example of going all the way to achieve his objectives, so let’s hope Halfdan won’t be too angry with Thorfinn after that.

Anyway, I definitely love the parallels between them: Thorfinn confronted the memory of Thors about all the blood on his hands during the Ketil farm arc (when Thors once told him that he had no enemy and didn’t need to kill anyone), which allowed him to strive forward and to start thinking about atoning through going to Vinland. 

Sigurd is now facing his father Halfdan, ready to fight for the future he wants to build, in order to become his own person.

I’m afraid we all know that’s a lie. :)))

Today on the blog, we kick off the spookiest month of the year with a mad scientist: Dr. Cyclops (1940)

Spoooooky October, movie buffs! This year, I do plan to continue the TMP tradition of Horror Half-Week in the days leading up to Halloween, but the rest of the month will feature some spooks as well. I have a little backlog of mysteries and monster movies to review. We begin today with 1940’s Dr. Cyclops.

Three scientist travel deep into the Amazonian jungle to meet a Dr. Thorkel. Little do they know that this madman will do anything to pursue his scientific breakthrough. Know one will get in his way of scientific triumph! WOOOHAHHAHA!

Dr. Cyclops is a classic sci-fi horror film from 1940, the “golden age” of horror.* This film was directed by Ernest B. Shoedsack and he was a pioneer of film. Shoedsack brought us great classics like the 1933 King Kong, Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young.

  Like his past movies; Dr. Cyclops also has elaborate sets and great practical effects. Maybe not “amazing” by today’s standards, but the craftsmanship is truly inventive. Also, Dr. Cyclops was the first horror film to be shot in Technicolor giving the film it’s over saturated effect.

One of my childhood memories is watching classic horror films with my dad. It was because of this time with my father that my love for horror films started. He introduced me to movies like Frankenstein, The Wolfman and this sci-fi horror Dr. Cyclops. I loved this movie and even today I feel childhood memories returning when I hear that eerie sound of Dr. Thorkel turning the the crank to his shrinking machine.

Despite some cheesy acting, the movie is very fun. The large props of Dr. Thorkels hands are a great asset. It also makes use of rear and front screen projection effects, a very innovative process used in King Kong. You will notice this technique in scenes where the shrunken people are standing before a gigantic Dr. Thorkel. Not bad for 1940 and no computers to do all the work for them! It shows a true commitment to the craft. What I wouldn’t give for one of those giant hands as a Halloween decoration in front of my house!

Does anyone else completely love the sound of classic films? The underlining soft tone throughout the films with little pops and crackles here in there are so cool. It accents the eeriness of the movies. I really love that.

Thorkel is a great character and the driving force for the entire film. He’s played by Albert Dekker and he works the role perfectly. Thorkel isn’t necessarily crazy, just obsessed with the progression of his research. Much like Dr. Frankenstein, he’s not aware that he has pushed scientific experiments too far. Or the boundaries or ethics he’s breaking as well. During this time period of horror films, the mad scientist was an extremely popular theme. I think that’s because the world was scared of the things like radiation and nuclear testing. It only makes sense that Hollywood tap into the fears of culture. Science was (and still is) a popular theme in horror films and it is still today. I hate these films but Human Centipede is a good example of that same theme. The crazy doctor conducting terrible experiments and breaking all codes of conduct to do so.

One thing that sticks out with Dt. Thorkel are his eye glasses. The guy suffers from miserable eyesight and he wears these insanely thick framed spectacles.  Without them he’s practically blind. The glasses are also the main object behind the title of the film. The thing about the title is that there really is no “Dr. Cyclops.”. At one point the little people destroy his glasses in order to blind him. They manage to destroy all but one of the lenses. Leaving Thorkel to use just one eye, thus making him Dr Cyclops. I don’t know who thought of the title. I suppose the term “cyclops” instills fear and sounds better on a poster. However, it may allude to a much grande meaning.

Or maybe!

Cyclops represents who Thorkel was all along. A man with only one lane of vision, not being able to see the world beyond one point of view. This singular vision turns him into a power hungry titan that will kill to reach his goals. Thorkel losing his use of one eye is just a metaphor for who he truly is. His lack of “vision” leaves him a danger to himself and anyone he knows. This is a good question for us all. Do we have traces of Dr. Cyclops in all of us? Is something narrowing our vision to the truth, slowly turning us mad? Wow, that’s some deep thinking right there.

Oh well, whatever the reason for us all, Dr. Cyclops is a favorite classic film of mine and I am proud to include it in my list.

The golden age of horror is a time period of that began in the 30’s and ended in the late 40’s. These movies primarily made their mark with the use of sound. Many people are familiar with the Universal Monster films like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman and The Creature From The Black Lagoon. It is the first of the movements of horror after the “Silent Era.”

Ahiru no Sora (Last: 2): Sora's new shot earned him additional defenders, but Chiaki was at last convinced to take the court. His skills ended the game on a high note despite the score.

Psycho-Pass S3 (Last: 5): The murder of Yakushiji's campaign manager expanded the investigation to the off-grid fighting arena in Myogadani. Later, a well-deserved punch got Kei suspended.

Vinland Saga (Last: 3): Askeladd stayed alive long enough for Thorkell to arrive and start murdering the mutineers because what he REALLY wanted was a rematch with Thorfinn.

Fire Force (Last: 7): Shinra correctly anticipated that Dr. Giovanni would attack Vulcan, but neither he nor his friends counted on Lisa being one of the Evangelist's sleeper agents.

True Cooking Master Boy (Last: 8): The docile genius Li Wen returned to Yang Spring as a ripped master of underground knife techniques who demanded the legendary cooking utensils.

Kono Oto Tomare! (Last: NR): Hoping to demoralize Hozuki and the squad, Dojima was dispatched to show them where they stood... but Kudo had the audacity to actually learn from her and improve.

1. Who’s your favorite real person?

Man I’m so bad at picking favorites and here’s this giant list of favorites I gotta pick. Idk? I’m really bad at picking favorites, and I’m really bad at finding inspiration from real people. There’s a lot of people I’d consider to have been inspirational to me IRL who sort of later let me down. I was really into Ender’s Game but turns out that the author is a nut, for example.

I think I’m going to go with Hang S. Ngor, who was a cambodian refugee. The TL;DR of his life is that he was a doctor (Surgeon and gynecologist) in Cambodia when Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge seized power. He escaped with his life, lost the love of his life, and was tortured repeatedly. He did end up managing to escape, but he’d lost everything. He was scouted at a wedding in America, and ended up being cast in The Killing Fields, which he won a supporting actor Oscar for, being the only asian man (and one of two non-professional actors) to do so.

The fact that he did all this while Pol Pot was still alive is crazy, and his autobiography really fucked me up.

2. Who’s your favorite character(s) and why to name a few?

Here’s my waifu chart. Notable missing characters: Naomi Li, Asgeir (Vinland Saga), Masumi Shin (Oyasumi Punpun).

Some big ones:

Hat: Non-canon, but still my love. I mean, I’m getting a Daki of him, I think my love is obvious enough.

Yuri Petrov (Tiger and Bunny): Man his story fucked me up. I know we’ll probably never get real closure on his story, but just... ;; Antihero babe...

Choe Gu-Sung (Psycho-Pass): Trust me, you don’t want to read his backstory. It adds a whole other level of what the fuck into the mix.

Asgeir (Vinland Saga): Also known as Asgautr. He’s totally passed over by most people, but he’s always there, has a consistent character, and keeps Thorkell in check like no one else can.

3. If you got to anywhere in the world where would you go?

Man, if I had to pick... maybe Japan? I just hate flying, but I’d love to visit Japan one day. It’s kinda cliche, but I’ve got a lot of friends out there and lots of stuff I’d love to see and bring back. Ghibli museum for example...

4. What is your favorite past time?

I read a lot of manga, watch a lot of anime, play a lot of games... but tbh mostly I forum roleplay at this point.

5. Favorite plant?

I don’t really have one I don’t think. I am not a very green person.

6. Favorite Villain?

I swear half my list is villains. Crocodile from One Piece is a big one. I feel like it’s kind of... realistic that he just mostly gives up once he’s beaten? Like, he knows he’s not going to win and throws in the towel rather than doing the shonen ‘struggle forever’ thing.

7. Milkshake, soda or tea?

You’re making me cry. Milkshakes, except I’m lactose intolerant, so just water for meeee.

8. Favorite trope?

I have a lot of tropes I really enjoy but I’m bad at remembering them. Glancing at TVTropes, I really like ‘I gave my word’ (when a character, especially the villain follows their word NO MATTER WHAT), ‘Black and Black Morality’ (There’s the bad guys, the bad guys, and the... slightly less bad guys?), and while not quite a trope, I really like when it’s a dystopian society that feels like something people would plausibly follow.

9. Favorite phase of the moon?

Full moon I guess?

10. Favorite animal (can be mythical)

I was a huge sucker for dolphins growing up but now I’m so big on parrotlets... like, small parrots... conures and lovebirds and stuff...

Have you read the new Vinland chapter?

Hello Anon and yes I have. :) Very expected development but I loved it! 

I mean, there was no way Gudrid would go back with Sigurd after all (narratively speaking it made 0 sense), but I’m glad that he came to this realization by himself and chose to do something about it…

…rather than pretending he didn’t hear her confession to Thorfinn. My Siggy is a great man like that, that’s why he’s got many friends looking out for him. :))

Speaking of which…

…look at these awkward kiddos: Thorfinn can’t even pretend anymore that he doesn’t get it and one can only appreciate Gudrid’s bravery, so I’m cheering for both of them.

Honestly, when it comes to Thorfinn’s answer…

…it’s pretty obvious that he cares about her, but probably not yet in the romantic sense, even if I’m confident it’ll come. 

I mean, it’s not like they’re kidding anybody since they’re already raising Karli together lmao, but Thorfinn probably needs time to really think about it, especially since he still has a shitty view of himself. 

Now that he’s aware of her feelings and that she’s waiting for an answer though, then he’ll definitely see her in a different light, especially since she kinda saved him from a fight with Thorkell. 

And apparently they’re going home, according to the editor’s line at the end of the chapter (whatever happened to selling those horns Halfdan gave them, idk), so his mom and sister are probably going to be very interested in him bringing back women (even if Hild isn’t interested). xDD

More seriously, going home may be pretty useful to this development, because Thorfinn is pretty much following in his father’s footsteps and Thors too once chose to leave war behind after killing so many people. So maybe his mom and sister can make him more confident about him being able to make Gudrid happy, in spite of his past, since that’s pretty much his reason for pushing her away. 

Anyway, overall I doubt the point of this chapter was for Gudrid to feel awful about herself or rejected…

…especially since she too was never described to be “conventional” which already brought her quite a lot of criticism so far, except from a few like Thorfinn and Hild. 

Therefore, I think Thorfinn’s answer will remain as ambiguous as the whole chapter (”my past is the reason I can’t make you happy; you deserve better”) so that Gudrid will not think that her not being “prime-bride material” is the reason he doesn’t like her.

Besides, such an answer might actually motivate her to make him change his mind, since she’s quite the headstrong character. :))

TL;DR It’s all on Thorfinn’s shoulders. Obviously he cares about Gudrid and she’s important to him, but because he’s got such a terrible view of himself (his violent past + Hild kinda serves as a reminder of all the blood he’s got on his hands), he never imagined deserving a happy future with a family. 

So Gudrid’s confession is like a wake-up call: she knows about his past but still loves him, meaning that now he just needs help (from Einar, Leif, his mom and sister) to see that he deserves love just as much as anyone. And once he does, that’s when they’ll get together in my opinion.

Haha, never ever did I expect love in Vinland Saga when I started it, so I’m super happy that we’re getting the full redemption menu. xD
