Star Trek Lower Decks, s05e04, notes on the watch
Qo'nos! MA'AH! I missed you, bud- I mean, captain!
And Ma'ah can't compete with the proper farm boys, hahaha!
WAIT THE CREDITS ARE WE REALLY GETTING AN ENTIRE ALIEN EPISODE PLEASE PLEASE
who are you ignoring Ma'ah tell us
ofc it's her who else could it be XD she is going to drag your sorry ass out of depression i'm betting
i love how the music is the metal version of the Klingon battle theme from earlier episodes
Ma'ah if a girl says that she find captains hot and then uses every excuse to get to you even when she finds out you were stripped out yours is either in love with you anyway and is just practicing her poetry or is a Romulan spy
Boimler continues his efforts at growing the beard!
okay, lol, K'Elarra draws the line at Starfleet!
Ma'ah's no good terrible very bad farm day, Malor just roasting him all day long
Klowhakans is a terrible pun, writers, OUCH. but at least we finally know who you are!
but also i can't wait to see all the hot takes on the birds for whom food criticism is the highest form of scholarship and is an art and a science
"It is a chain" ahahahaha
Mariner, you really got tired of model officering and now want shenanigans? Klingon shenanigans, preferrably?
"It is better you train to fight the bear" - so do the science officers get snakes huh huh
AHAHA Ma'ah's brother just... punctures the bullshit in classic sibling way
OH NO IT'S A GORDON RAMSEY EPISODE (but also alien-focused so I'm good)
calling it now those birds are a stage persona
they also need to meet some Tellarites! Where is Dr. Noum when you need him?!
oh DAMN the Klowahkans look like they're pretty isolationist oh man this is good fanfic fodder
AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAH
New reaction shot go!
(oh my godd Lower Decks should be given 7 more seasons just to do aliens - because yes, of course it's a parody, but it's a parody through which you can very easily see what the serious stories stemming from their additions look like, well done!)
YES DRAG THE FARM BOY INTO SHENANIGANS
When *Mariner* gives you the side-eye for Klingon enthusiasm, Boimler, you know it's gonna be fun!
THE KLOWAHKIAN DINING UTENSILS I CAN'T EVEN
Gabers Migleemo, we have a name!
The cut from "to my quarters" to the ritual with the corresponding music change is excellent
"clutch me you coward!"
Boimler genuinely saving the day the entire episode, huh?
K'Orin is just eating gagh like popcorn in his mind
Aw, Tendi and her dicing :)
farm boy background comes in handy, Malor!
"hire a targ groomer, dude!"
Oh man, the duel scene. Brutal and excellently Klingon.
THERE'S OUR WORMHOLE THROUGHLINE (wormhole wormhole hahaaha)
ok, wow, we get to see Migleemo being extremely professional and cool, amazing XD
I can really see the family resemblance with Mariner right now, captain Freeman!
that truck is going to have the best targs in the fleet huh
#lower decks#star trek lower decks#notes on the watch#10/10 episode#no notes#best episode of the new season so far!

Anika and Liz hit a speedbump with their recording schedule (stupid jobs) and then hit a speedbump with Prodigy in the form of ... two episodes that we did not entirely love? Is that even possible? We're here to talk about episodes 6 and 7 of Star Trek: Prodigy's second season: "Identity Crisis" and "The Fast and the Curious"...
We’re not NOT shipping Gwyn/Ma’jel
Both of these episodes are mainly about putting the pieces in place and setting up threads for later
What type of characters are allowed to be audacious and ambitious?Â
Does Prodigy have a problem with body diversity and same-face?Â
Zero/Ma’jel and the power of being chosen by someone instead of being thrown together by circumstances
Anika has a new favourite Andorian
Dr Noum: great at work-life balance, maybe not so great at … his job

Won’t someone think of the children?! A Jankom Pog Appreciation Post
By Ames
Okay, I meant to only do a Rok-Tahk appreciation post because a) she’s the best and b) who has the time to write all these blogposts? But I just can’t help myself. The community’s efforts to #SaveStarTrekProdigy have motivated me to keep the posts going, so here’s some more love for Star Trek: Prodigy. These installments probably won’t be as intense as the Rok post, but check out what makes Jankom Pog such a great character.
[images © CBS/Paramount… I guess? For now? Yikes.]
Jankom makes you change your mind
Jankom is the character I had the most trouble coming up with good headlines for in this blogpost, and here’s why that’s actually a good thing! He’s supposed to be the obnoxious, goofy, jokey comic relief character for kids to giggle at. He has a weird tick in that he speaks about himself in the third person, which starts off funny and then gets tiresome. He’s voiced by notorious character actor Jason Mantzoukas, who plays pretty much every role he touches maximum-Derek, over-the-top zany. But once you learn about all the trauma in Jankom’s backstory, you understand him a little more, and what seemed like a really annoying character for frankly most of the season materializes into a character who makes a lot of sense. It would be like finding out Jar Jar Binks were abused as a child and that’s why he’s such a screw up. Especially for a kid’s show, it’s actually a really nice way of portraying a character who has more going on under the surface than he lets on, and you shouldn’t just judge a book by its cover, as you’ll see below…
Jankom has PTSD
In an era in which more and more is known about autism or ADD or anxiety or PTSD or other mental health conditions, it’s actually quite great to see a character whom the audience will immediately dismiss out-of-hand and then have him get fleshed out as a person whom the rest of the crew accepts in spite of his eccentricities. And you may kick yourself a little bit! I remember a lot of people thinking “Ugh, Jankom is simply the worst,” myself included, and then feel like an asshole when his backstory gives you some of the traumatizing reasons why he’s like that from the episode “Preludes.” Prodigy reminds us over and over again to be more accepting of people’s differences by showing us these great characters who love each other unconditionally, and why can’t we do that ourselves?
Jankom served on a sleeper ship
“Preludes” also informs us that Tellarite orphans (Jankom’s an orphan – that’s something else to hopefully get to explore!) are put on sleeper ships. We learn that Jankom was in cryostasis for two centuries before his ship malfunctioned and he woke up. As we’ve discussed whenever cryostasis comes up, putting someone in the freezer for a period of time has some interesting implications on the world of the show. This makes Jankom literally a relic from the past! We don’t know [yet] what his life was like before going into cryo, but that does put his birthdate right before the time the Federation was getting founded in Enterprise, so that’s kinda neat. And when we see his backstory as de facto engineer of this constantly breaking sleeper ship, we also understand more about Pog’s preoccupation with wanting to fix things. Jankom Pog can fix it!
Jankom gives us a main Tellarite character
We’ve never had one of these! The Tellarites have come a long way from the horrible pig masks from “Journey to Babel,” and I am dying to know more! Sure, they’re Federation royalty, being one of the founding members of the Federation, and Enterprise gives us a little bit more of them, but most everything we know about them is that they’re argumentative gluttons who particularly don’t care for Andorians very much. Prodigy does well to keep this consistent, especially when we see Dr. Noum acting incredibly judgmentally toward just about everyone, especially Jankom Pog for being short in “Crossroads.” We don’t get to learn much new about them except the aforementioned penchant for using cryosleep to span long distances in space. They’re so nice to see and I want more.
We love you, Jankom Pog! We love the other crew members of the Protostar too! We love Star Trek: Prodigy! Check out the other character appreciation posts for Rok-Tahk, Dal R’El, Gwyndala, and Zero while you’re here. I know I can speak for not only the other hosts here at A Star to Steer Hey By but for myriad other fans when I seriously hope someone picks up this wonder of a show. We’re really looking forward to seeing more from these amazing child characters, and we’re seriously wishing we get that opportunity. #SaveStarTrekProdigy

one thing that’s kind of let me down over what we’ve had of this season of prodigy is that they’re not really taking jankom pog as seriously as the other characters? i get that you’re always going to need someone to release steam in the form of comedy, especially in a cast of former child slaves, but a lot of in-depth questions being asked about the other main characters and their inner lives aren’t really being explored about pog and that’s kind of a shame
particularly in crossroads i was at a loss at how to absorb jankom’s interaction with dr. noum. i know it was probably meant as all comic relief but it really just made me ask more questions, like: why doesn’t pog know what the implications of his last name are? does he not speak tellarite? he was raised on a tellarite sleeper ship, but clearly someone must have been around to raise him and he’s aware of the tellarite cultural norms about brashness so he’s not as cut off from his culture as dal or gwyn and therefore might have been able to know the subtext in his last name? for that matter, is it just him or was his entire line of delta quadrant tellarites short and because of that the subtext of the last name got lost, because at this point they’re all short? for that matter, why was pog so horrified? shouldn’t he expect to get insulted by another tellarite if that’s the polite way to interact? what’s the limit to what “polite rudeness” is in tellarite society? are there differences in what the limit is between the alpha quadrant and delta quadrant tellarites? like these are all vital things to take into account to what we just saw and in say, a character like gwyn or zero would have been questions taken seriously, but not for jankom pog and i just think that’s a shame

Anika and Liz sign up for an internship, accidentally steal a ship, and … well, we’re discussing the second season premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy!Â
(Please note we have seen the whole season, and although we make some very virtuous remarks about sticking to the episodes at hand, we cannot be trusted to respect the Temporal Prime Directive.)
The binge model and Star Trek
Dal versus the education system
Sexualising the Diviner
Zero’s story is both a trans narrative and a disability narrativeÂ
The romances in this series are super low key and free of inherent drama … but would there be a bigger fandom if the show provided more fodder for ship wars? Is that better? Or worse?Â
Jankom and therapy and Dr Noum
Rok-Tahk, rules and Liz’s Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead trauma

Is Star Trek: Prodigy Setting Up A New Star Trek Series?
Star Trek: Prodigy is the latest in a resurgence of the franchise on the small screen. With the success of Star Trek: Discovery, the Paramount franchise now has multiple TV shows on the air, in an era of peak Star Trek. Discovery spun off Strange New Worlds, with two more shows in development. On top of that, there's the return of Star Trek: Picard and the new Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated comedy series. With Star Trek: Prodigy, the franchise introduces itself to a brand new audience. But with the latest episode, there might be a Star Trek: Prodigy spin-off series also in the works. Read on to see exactly what I mean. How Star Trek: Prodigy Connects To The Larger Franchise While Star Trek: Prodigy is relatively free from the franchise’s other entries, it does connect in one way. The character of Hologram Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) comes from the character of Captain Kathryn Janeway, who was the lead of the series Star Trek: Voyager. The hologram is there as a means of connective tissue from the larger Star Trek franchise, into Prodigy. As season 1 of Prodigy unfolded, even more connections came out. The story of the missing Protostar ship revealed that the original captain of that ship was none other than Chakotay. Chakotay (Robert Beltram) was the first officer of Janeway’s in Voyager. Although, the timeline of Prodigy in the Star Trek universe, was still uncertain. The premiere of the 2nd part of season 1 of Prodigy makes the timeline a lot clearer. Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway Estaliblishes Star Trek Timeline When Prodigy Season 1 episode 11 began, we got flashbacks of how the real Kathryn Janeway became a Vice Admiral. This placed Prodigy’s story in a timeline after the events of the Star Trek: Voyager series. With Janeway now back in the Alpha Quadrant, it means the events of that show have already happened. We also see Chakotay become Captain of the Protostar, heading back into outer space on a new mission. The Season 1 Part 1 finale saw the real Janeway find Protostar’s warp signature, putting her on the case of the missing ship. Episode 12 gives us further insight into where she is in the show. We see Janeway beginning her mission to track down the Protostar, thinking that Chakotay is still Captain. But we as the audience know that our lovable group of would-be Starfleet cadets, with Dal (Brett Gray) leading them, are actually on board now. Star Trek Prodigy firmly establishes that we are going to see a lot more of the real Janeway in this back half of season 1. Some New Characters in Star Trek: Prodigy So far, the 2 episodes of the latter half of season 1 seem to be about a mouse game between the crew of the Protostar, and Janeway herself on their heels. During this we see to Janeway and her new crew on board the USS Dauntless. A scene depicts Janeway exasperatingly ordering tea from the replicator. This is an Easter egg for Voyager fans, as the Captain has famously been a slave to her coffee for years during that show. With Janeway now begrudgingly switching to tea, it seems the character is growing. It’s also funny seeing Janeway follow doctor’s orders. For once. Then there’s the introduction of the new members of her crew. A young go-getter in Ensign Ascensia is Vice Admiral Janeway’s newest teacher’s pet. In this episode, she stands out by suggesting a unique idea that catches Janeway’s attention. Ascensia is also voiced by Jameela Jamil from the current She-Hulk series. Jamil is already doing interviews about how excited she is joining the new show. Then there is a super salty and sassy Dr. Noum. Noum is the Dauntless’ Chief Medical Officer and boy, does he have a whole lotta attitude! The Doctor is insanely sarcastic when Janeway asks to revive The Diviner (John Noble) for questioning. And he even sourly gives Ascenia a backhanded compliment about being a butt-kisser. Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) voices Noum. There’s also Commander Tysses, an Andorian officer, who might be the Dauntless’ Science Officer. Or Janeway’s second in command? In either case, he sounds like a self-assured officer with a lot more going on. Daveed Diggs voices Tysses. How Star Trek: Prodigy Could Set Up A New Spin-Off Series Given the very detailed introduction of these characters, and how the two episodes thus far make them stand out, I suspect that there might be a Star Trek: Prodigy spin-off series in the works. The fact that these new characters are voiced by very famous and talented actors, I doubt that they are minor or throwaway characters. The story also so far has highlighted each of them in very specific ways. Too specific to be unimportant. We’ll have to see where their stories go in the rest of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1. But it definitely seems like they’re setting them up to be more important as we go. Maybe the Protostar crew will get folded into the Dauntless. Or, more likely, these Dauntless crew members might find themselves aboard the Protostar, to support out the inexperience of our favourite new characters. In any case, time will tell what happens. Star Trek: Prodigy is now airing new episodes every week. Do you want to see a Star Trek: Prodigy spin-off series? Or do you want to see these new characters become regulars in this show? Let me know in the comments below. Read the full article

I hope Dr Noum is called to the admiral's cell now that she's awake. He offers her coffee, and after having to drink tea for a while, she acts like it's a taste of heaven. Noum then reports she's back to normal based on that alone, so they'll start listening to her about the Protostar.
I love that Dal disliking the taste of coffee is one of the main reasons the crew knows that’s not the real Janeway on their bridge. Because of course out of all the giveaways, Janeway’s love of coffee is definitely the biggest.

This is the moment Commander Tysess (and Dr Noum and Ascenscia) knew something was absolutely up with Admiral Janeway ... Also, any Andorian worth his salt would have shot a Human (anyone, actually) for calling them "Antennas" ... Let's see what he does 🤣

It is a really hilarious parallelism
And Janeway is once again, hunting for Chakotay after he gets lost in the DQ. Dont want to spoil but theres a few other paralells and some awesome voyager references too. I really hope we get a few appearances from other Voy characters next season. (I'd especially love to have Tuvok back. Commander Tysess and Dr. Noum are great but nothing can replace Tuvok and Janeways dynamic).
I’ve only seen clips from Prodigy but from what I’m gathering it seems like Chakotay got lost in the delta quadrant AGAIN and honestly - if we set the tragedy of that aside? It’s the funniest fucking thing in the universe

@the-lady-general
I LOVE this comment - while Janeway will be a sorta-antogonist for this part of the season, I'd love it if Dr. Noum and the Andorian were just like:
"Well. Guess we're Dads now."
I'm especially looking forward to this guy finally showing up, he looks really cool.

In addition to this, I’d like to remind everyone that this was foreshadowed by Vice Admiral Janeway’s mission log from back in November. It reads as follows:
Vice Admiral's Log, Stardate 61293.1. Despite his unknown species, Dr. Noum has stabilized our mysterious visitor by replicating a serum found nearby. From early tests, Noum believes his physiology may possess energy-based psychokinesis, not unlike some Zalkonians.
Zalkonians were a race who appeared on TNG and who would undergo a process that would transform them into non-corporeal lifeforms.
So thanks, Vice Admiral Janeway and Doctor Noum. You foreshadowed what would happen to the Diviner when he died several months ago…
