Mark Harmon Named 2019 NFF Gold Medal Recipient

On Dec. 10, the NFF will present its highest honor to Harmon in recognition of his roots as a football scholar-athlete and subsequent accomplishments as a leader in the field of entertainment. IRVING, Texas (May 16, 2019) – The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced today that former UCLA quarterback Mark Harmon has been named the 2019 recipient of the NFF Gold Medal in recognition of his exceptional accomplishments, unblemished reputation and for reflecting the values of amateur football. He will be honored for his achievements during the 62nd NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 10 at the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City, which will also celebrate the 150th anniversary of college Football.

"As we prepare to celebrate the 150th anniversary of college football, Mark Harmon captures exactly what we hope to inspire in future generations of young football players, making him the perfect recipient for the NFF's highest honor," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "An NFF National Scholar-Athlete at UCLA in the early 1970s, Mark took that same relentless drive to succeed, applying it to his career as an actor and unequivocally becoming one of the most successful stars of his generation. He has earned this honor many times over, and we are extremely proud to add his name to the esteemed list of past NFF Gold Medal recipients."

The highest and most prestigious award presented by the National Football Foundation, the Gold Medal recognizes an outstanding American who has demonstrated integrity and honesty; achieved significant career success; and has reflected the basic values of those who have excelled in amateur sport, particularly football. Harmon was born and raised in Southern California; the son of actress Elyse Knox and Heisman Trophy winner Tom Harmon, a 1954 College Football Hall of Fame inductee from Michigan. He attended The Harvard School (now known as Harvard-Westlake) in Los Angeles, playing football, baseball and rugby. On the gridiron, he mostly took the field as a running back and safety, only appearing in four games at quarterback. He broke his elbow as a junior, and did not play varsity football as a senior. 

Not recruited out of high school, Harmon headed to Pierce Junior College in Woodland Hills, California, and he quarterbacked the team to a 7-2 record in 1971, earning All-America laurels. His performance earned him multiple scholarship offers, including Oklahoma in an effort led by Barry Switzer, the offensive coordinator at the time and a future College Football Hall of Fame coach, to recruit him. Harmon opted to stay in his hometown of Los Angeles, playing for UCLA head coach Pepper Rodgers and assistant coaches Homer Smith, Lynn Stiles and Terry Donahue, also a future College Football Hall of Fame coach.

Playing alongside future College Football Hall of Fame inductees Randy Cross and John Sciarra, Harmon helped orchestrate a UCLA turnaround, quarterbacking the Bruins, which had finished 2-7-1 at eighth-place in the Pac-8 in 1971, to a combined 17-5 record in 1972 and 1973. In his first game ever as a Bruin, which opened the 1972 season, Harmon led an underdog UCLA to a dramatic 20-17 win against two-time defending national champion Nebraska, snapping the Huskers' 32-game-unbeaten streak.   A Wishbone-T quarterback who could run, pass, fake and mix plays, Harmon rushed for more yards and touchdowns than he did passing, amassing 1,504 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns versus passing for 845 yards and 9 touchdowns during his tenure in Westwood. The offensive coordinator Homer Smith's wishbone offense forced Harmon to make multiple decisions in very short time periods, distributing the ball to running backs Kermit Johnson and James McAlister. The combination created the top running game in the nation in 1973, and UCLA set school records for total yards gained (4,403), average yards per game (400) and rushing touchdowns (56).   A Communications major who aspired to become a doctor, Harmon excelled in the UCLA classrooms, carrying a 3.45 GPA and graduating cum laude. His accomplishments earned him Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors as well as an NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award, which led to his trip to New York City where he was honored at the NFF Annual Awards Dinner the same night that John Wayne accepted the NFF Gold Medal.   "In today's society, the scholar-athlete is indeed a rare breed," Harmon said in responding for the NFF Scholar-Athlete Class in 1973. "Not only does he excel on the field, but he competes in the classroom as well…. As we gather here tonight to pay our respects to the men who made the great American game of football what it is today, we hope that one day in the future some of us from the Class of '74 might be fortunate enough to carry on the great tradition that has been passed down by the distinguished men in this room. If we do, it is because our universities gave us the chance and the game of football has given us the principles."   After UCLA, Harmon declined professional football offers to instead pursue acting. He worked in advertising, as a shoe company rep and as a carpenter between acting gigs and appearing in Coors beer commercials. His hard work eventually paid off with a big break on NBC's St. Elsewhere and the leading role of Dr. Robert Caldwell. His success continued on NBC's police drama Reasonable Doubts starring as detective Dickey Cobb and CBS's Chicago Hope where he appeared as Dr. Jack McNeil.   He also had memorable arcs on the hit shows Moonlighting and The West Wing before landing the lead role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, on CBS' global favorite NCIS series, which has become part of television history, approaching its 400th episode and recently inking a deal for its 17th season. The most-watched-scripted show on American television today and consistently ranked among the five highest-rated TV shows each year, NCIS is a TV juggernaut, attracting more than 15 million viewers each week throughout most of its run.   In 2011, Harmon became an executive producer on NCIS, and in 2014 an idea he co-developed became the spinoff NCIS: New Orleans which premiered on CBS with Harmon as an executive producer alongside Gary Glasberg. Karl Swenson (July 23, 1908 – October 8, 1978)   Theatre, radio, film, and television actor. Early in his career, he was credited as Peter Wayne

In 1956, Swenson played police Captain Harris of the Monticello Police Department and commanding officer to Detective Lieutenant Mike Karr on The Edge of Night. Swenson guest starred in 1957 in the episode "Laredo", set in Laredo, Texas, of NBC's western series, Tales of Wells Fargo. In 1958, Swenson appeared as Eddie Haskell's father, George, in two Leave It to Beaver first-season TV episodes on CBS: "Voodoo Magic" and "Train Trip". In 1958, Swenson was cast as Jim Courtright, a controversial lawman from Fort Worth, Texas in the episode "Long Odds" of Colt .45. From 1958 through 1961, he had various roles in the television series Have Gun Will Travel.

In 1959, Swenson played a former Russian seaman en route to becoming an American citizen, Alexi Sharlakov, in the episode "The Extra Hand" of the ABC/WB western series, Sugarfoot, with Will Hutchins in the title role. In the story line, in exchange for a horse and supplies, Sugarfoot becomes Sharlakov's traveling companion. When the two reach a mining ghost town in Kansas, Sharlakov searches for Vic Latour (Anthony Caruso) and Hank Bremer (Jack Lambert), two men who had tried to kill him and left him with only one arm. The "extra hand" is that of Sugarfoot, backing up Sharlakov in a showdown with Latour and Bremer.

A month after this episode, Swenson was cast again on Sugarfoot, this time as a wealthy Irish rancher, Dennis O'Hara. Sue Randall plays his daughter, Kathy, an aspiring concert pianist attracted to another pianist, Frederick, Pulaski (Adam West) Frank Cady played a corrupt lawyer to whom O'Hara had blindly trusted his business.

In 1959, Swenson was cast as Ansel Torgin, with John Ireland as Chris Slade, in the episode "The Fight Back" of the NBC western series, Riverboat. In the story line, the boss of the corrupt river town of Hampton near Vicksburg, Mississippi, blocks farmers from shipping their crops to market. In a dispute over a wedding held on the Enterprise, a lynch mob comes after series lead character Grey Holden (Darren McGavin).

In 1959, Swenson was cast in an episode of the 1959 Police Drama "Lock Up". In the series pilot "The Failure", Swenson is cast as Ed Reed, a man who is accused of arson and murder. The series ran from 1959–61, starring Macdonald Carey. He appeared in 1959 in an episode of The Man from Blackhawk.

In 1960, Swenson appeared in an episode ("Odyssey of Hate") on the CBS adventure/action drama series Mr. Lucky. The same year, he was cast in the NBC science fiction series The Man and the Challenge. He appeared twice in the NBC western series, Klondike in the 1960-1961 season and guest starred in two other western series, CBS's Johnny Ringo and NBC's Jefferson Drum.

In 1961, Swenson appeared with John Lupton in the episode "Doctor to Town" of the Robert Young series Window on Main Street.

In 1962, Swenson made a one-time appearance on CBS's The Andy Griffith Show as Mr. McBeevee, a lineman for the power company who became Opie’s mystery friend. He guest starred in NBC's Laramie western series and in the science fiction series, Steve Canyon, with Dean Fredericks in the title role. In 1963, he portrayed Nelson in the episode "Beauty Playing a Mandolin Underneath a Willow Tree" episode of the NBC medical drama, The Eleventh Hour. That same year, he was cast with Charles Aidman and Parley Baer in the three-part episode "Security Risk" of the CBS anthology series, GE True, hosted by Jack Webb.  And also in 1962, he appeared as the father of Jena Engstrom in the "Chester's Indian" episode of Gunsmoke, in a story featuring Dennis Weaver.

From 1962 through 1973 Swenson made guest appearance on the TV series Lassie in the episodes "The Nest" (1962), "Crossroad" (1964), "In the Eyes of Lassie" (1965), "The Homeless" (1967), "A Time for Decision" (1967), "Hanford's Point" (1968), "Other Pastures, Other Fences" (1971) and later would become a regular playing Karl Burkholm in Season 18 and 19.. Swenson made four guest appearances on Perry Mason, including the part of defendant Axel Norstaad, a Danish woodshop owner in the 1961 episode, "The Case of the Tarnished Trademark", and an ex-convict in the 1963 episode, "The Case of the Bigamous Spouse." From 1959 through 1967 Swenson made guest appearance on the TV series Bonanza in the episodes "Death on Sun Mountain" (1959), "Day of Reckoning" (1960), "A Natural Wizard" (1965) and "Showdown at Tahoe" (1967).

Swenson appeared in a 1967 episode of Hogan's Heroes entitled "How to Win Friends and Influence Nazis", in which he played a likable and friendly Swedish scientist, Dr. Karl Svenson, who is persuaded by Hogan (Bob Crane) to join the Allied war effort. Although Swenson had credits on dozens of other television series, including an appearance on the ABC/WB episode "Shady Deal at Sunny Acres"  of the western Maverick, he is best known for his performance as the kindly Lars Hanson in NBC's Little House on the Prairie. Blood Diamond (2006) dir. Edward Zwick

A famous film about the illegal diamond trade and civil war in Africa. The story of Solomon Vandy’s family shows terrible consequences the diamond trade had on average person’s life and DiCaprio’s role as a cynical merc/smuggler makes the story even more riveting. 10/10 would rewatch.

Sztuka kochania. Historia Michaliny Wisłockiej / The Art of Loving. Story of Michalina Wisłocka (2017) dir. Maria Sadowska

Polish film about Polish sexuologist dr Michalina Wisłocka. The two intertwining plotlines show her personal, very unconventional, relationships, and how her revolutionary book was finally allowed to be printed in Poland. Very delightful piece of cinema. The nude and sex scenes were tasteful, but I’m still glad I saw it in the privacy of my home.

Historia Roja (2016) dir. Jerzy Zalewski

This Polish film is supposed to tell a story of a commander of the anti-communist underground in Poland right after WW2, however it has a mass of problems, beginning with the script. The movie is, simply put, a chaotic mess. The scenes are in random order, without any sort of chronology, making it hard to understand the progression of events, as well as the chain of cause and effect in the whole story. It doesn’t help that it’s very dark, so I had trouble telling the actors/characters apart, and the sounds weren’t always recorded clearly. The film was watchable, but more as a series of various, more or less entertaining snapshots from the fight against communism, rather than a coherent story. If someone wishes to actually learn something about this topic, it’s better to read history books than watch this production.

The Shining (1980) dir. Stanley Kubrick

Kubrick throws away majority of what made Stephen King’s legendary horror book good and by that I mean all the psychological character drama. Instead we got a pretty, artsy film without the core of what made the story really memorable - the characters. What’s worse, even the most satisfying ending from the books was changed into a bad old-school cliche. Disappointing.

1920 Bitwa Warszawska / Battle of Warsaw 1920 (2011) dir. Jerzy Hoffman

November 11th was the perfect time to watch a patriotic film for the Independence Day. I chose 1920 Bitwa Warszawska because if we didn’t win this battle, we would have lost the independence after only two years. The film was competently made. Between the unfolding story of newlyweds, an officer getting captured by the Red Army and trying to reunite with his wife, a performer in a club, the film puts in some history lessons through the mouths of key historical figures of that time. Instead of seeing the battle, the film shows a lot of fighting on the ground and the strategic situation on the map, but all in all it was a solid movie.

Robin Hood (2010) dir. Ridley Scott

Robin Longstride impersonates Robert Locksley and helps rally people against King John’s unjust taxes and the French invasion. Russell Crowe did a good job in the main role, but Cate Blanchett playing Marian stole the show. She was easily my favourite part of the movie and she had a really good chemistry with Crowe. Even the nonsense with Marian joining the final battle can be easily forgiven for everything else she brought to this story with her performance. I really enjoyed this take on Robin Hood’s origin and I really wish this film had a sequel about the actual conflict between Robin and Sheriff of Nottingham.

Mother! (2017) dir. Darren Aronofsky

This film is hard to qualify. It’s like a nightmare of the main character, a young wife of a famous poet, as various people enter her idyllic life and are bent on taking away her husband’s attention and destroying her house. Only the ending reveals the giant, biblical metaphor that allows the horrific events of the story to make sense. I liked Jennifer Lawrence’s performance. Surprisingly she can play something different than a “strong female character” and she does it much better. The film was a weird and unsettling experience.

Batman Begins (2005) dir. Christopher Nolan

I finally got around to watching the first part of Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Bruce Wayne’s character evolution into Batman was properly explored and I liked Evil Qui-Gon as the main villain. And the Jedi ninja training montage :)

An alter ego means an alternative self, which is believed to be distinct from a person's normal or true original personality. Usually having an alter ego means you dress in a completely different way with different hair and makeup, maybe with a different personality. This engineered persona could give people the confidence to do things they wouldn’t have the confidence to do as their original selves.
