Dorothy Day

Servant of God 1897-1980 Co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement

Dorothy Day was an American journalist, social activist, and Catholic convert. In the 1930s, Day worked closely with fellow activist Peter Maurin to establish the Catholic Worker Movement, a pacifist movement that continues to combine direct aid to the poor and homeless with nonviolent direct action on their behalf. Her cause for canonization has been opened by the Catholic Church.

It’s essential to know and remember our history. We honor those who came before us, fought this same fight, who laid the groundwork and cleared a path. Our mutual aid organizing is inspired by so many but especially the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, the Catholic Worker Movement founded by the anarchist Dorothy Day, and Food Not Bombs. From 1968-1975 the Panthers used donated food to make sure that children in their communities had enough to eat before school in dozens of cities around the country. This led the federal government to do the same, making their program unnecessary. They also regularly offered free groceries to the community.

When Bartolomé de las Casas witnessed the atrocities Spanish soldiers were committing against native peoples in the Caribbean he could not sit back calling it "God's will" and do nothing. He said, "I had no choice but to unsheathe the sword of my pen." What is happening to families at our border, and has been happening for years, is a tragic deconstruction of human rights. One that bothers me and is one of many reminders of how powerless I am in such situations. The easiest way people ignore the teachings of Jesus is to place their meaning in some future heavenly reality to come. But the Jesus of Mark's Gospel arrives simply and succinctly stating, "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!" The kingdom of heaven is here and now, and I seek to be part of it by loving God and loving my neighbor. While my "thoughts and prayers" are truly with these families escaping chaos and hell for more chaos and hell, I feel I need to act as well. So I unsheathed the sword of my brush pens and drew these journals. I am selling them for $25 each. 50% of the funds will go to World Relief to help support the work they do with refugees. The other 50% will go to Hope Border Institute for the work they are doing at the El Paso/Juarez portion of the border. This is not enough. But it is something. -joshua.

“We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community.” •••••••••••••••••• Spending a whole day (safely) with strangers in a beautiful place after a year of closing myself off to the world was cathartic... but it’s what I needed to remind me that, I’m an extrovert, people are beautiful, there is more to socializing than being woke on social media! In all seriousness, I am still reeling over the cherry blossom photo shoot from last Saturday! I got so much out of that day - spending time with new people - giving them an opportunity to feel special, beautiful or handsome - to meet folks interested in my creative work, and trusting enough to invest their time and hard earned money in my craft - and lastly it feels really good to see the demand for these fun quick sessions. I can’t believe day 2 is already fully booked 😲 These sessions are revealing a more intimate side of #portland that I had never taken the true time to appreciate - the varied uniqueness, love, warmth, compassion, individual expression, and personality of its inhabitants. My social bubble in this city is so much smaller than I realize, and Saturday was a great reminder of that. If you came out on Saturday, thank you deeply for spending time with me, and letting me play a teeny role in telling your story.
