Remembering A Hardcore Legend: Celebrating The Life And Career of Terry Funk
Today is the one year anniversary of the passing of the legendary Terry Funk. I hope this article helps you all understand who he was and why he is important to wrestling.
Terrance ‘ Terry’ Dee Funk was born to Dorothy and Dory Funk Sr. on June 30, 1944 in Hammond, Indiana . He had an older brother , Dory Funk Jr. the Funk family soon moved to Texas during the end of World War II. Terry and Dory spent their childhood in the wrestling business as their father was a wrestling promoter. After high school, Terry attended college at West Texas A & M University, where he was also an athlete. He was on the football team and on the amateur wrestling team.
Terry Funk had a career which took place for half of a century ( 50 years ) . He was also known for the hardcore style of wrestling , which he is considered one of the pioneers for . His career began in 1965 at his father ‘s wrestling promotion , Western States Sports out of Amarillo , Texas. He became the NWA World Heavyweight Champion in 1975 after replacing his brother , Dory, who was set to face Jack Brisco for the championship. Dory never showed up to the promotion for the match. He also had a rivalry with ‘ The American Dream ’ Dusty Rhodes , with Funk coining the catchphrase, ‘ Dusty Sucks Eggs ’ . He also spent part of his career in Japan in the promotion, All Japan Pro Wrestling ( AJPW ). This was from 1972 to 1991.
Funk soon found his way to World Wrestling Federation from 1985 to 1986. He also had a stint in World Championship Wrestling ( WCW ) from 1989 to 1990 and again in 1994 . He returned to Japan in 1994 as a part of the International Wrestling Association of Japan ( IWA). He participated in the King of The Death Match Tournament in 1995. He would also have a stint in Extreme Championship Wrestling ( ECW ) from 1993 to 1997. He would have rivalries with stars such as Cactus Jack ( Mick Foley ) , Raven, Stevie Richards, Sabu, and his protege , Tommy Dreamer. He was even ECW World Heavyweight Champion before losing the championship to Sabu during a Barbed Wire Match at Born To Be Wired in 1997. Funk would soon find his way back to the WWF in 1997.
Terry Funk would be a surprise entrant in the 1997 WWF Royal Rumble at number 24. He was in the match for 15 minutes and 18 seconds until being eliminated by Mankind ( Mick Foley ). He had a short retirement before returning to the company in December of the same year to become tag team partners with Mick Foley. He adopted the gimmick , ‘ Chainsaw Charlie ’. He would also form a tag time with 2 Cold Scorpio during his time in WWF as well. He would return to ECW in 1998 and had a rivalry with Tommy Dreamer before a second retirement in 1999. Funk would return to WCW in 2000. He make appearances in Ring Of Honor , Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and Major League Wrestling. He would also spend time on the Independent Wrestling circuit before making a few more appearances in the WWE. Terry alongside his brother , Dory , would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009 by Dusty Rhodes. However , Terry would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a solo wrestler by Mick Foley . In 2016, Funk was seen at Wrestlemania 32 giving advice to Dean Ambrose ( Jon Moxley ) , before his match against Brock Lesnar, which was a No Holds Barred Street Fight. Funk gifted Ambrose a chainsaw as a nod to his Chainsaw Charlie gimmick . He would return to the Indie scene the same year .
Terry Funk passed away at the age of 79 in Phoenix , Arizona. On the August 25 edition of Friday Night Smackdown , the WWE paid tribute Funk and Bray Wyatt , who passed away the next day. Thus , in honor of Funk , ‘ The American Nightmare ’ Cody Rhodes , came down to the ring and announced a Terry Funk Memorial Hardcore Tag Team match with the participants being The Street Profits and The Brawling Brutes.
Wrestlers such as Mick Foley , Tommy Dreamer, Eddie Kingston , and Jon Moxley have all credited Funk for influencing their careers. Bret Hart has also praised him for being one of the greatest in ring performers.
My Final Thoughts:
There will never be another Terry Funk. If it was wasn’t for him being so influential in hardcore wrestling , I think that we wouldn’t have promotions such as Game Changer Wrestling ( GCW ) , which is known for deathmatch wrestling and I don’t think hardcore wrestling would be popular . Terry Funk was one of those wrestlers who influenced almost everyone . Watching his matches on the internet and on Peacock, makes me wish I could go back in time and watch live . He is a reason why I love Deathmatch and Hardcore Wrestling. Long Live The Funker! Go watch a Terry Funk match if you haven’t ! You’ll be amazed!
1944-2023
Love You All,
- Kay

Dorothy Szany Murder 2006 - UNSOLVED
Tumblr media
(Image: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ntv3AGJb5M )
From Bones of Autum at Reddit:
In 2006, 85-year-old Dorothy Szany was bludgeoned to death in the backyard of her Hammond, Indiana home while her husband Joseph, who suffered from severe Alzheimer’s, sat unknowingly on the couch. Later he would tell the couples children that “they” had said “they would come back and get him.”
On May 24th, 2006, 85-year-old Dorothy Szany was busy making dinner for her and her husband of 64 years, 91-year-old Joseph Szany. Joseph’s health was on the decline. He was wheelchair bound, and suffered from severe Alzheimer’s disease. However according to Dorothy, putting him in a nursing home was “out of the question.” Instead, she choose to care for her ailing husband in the comfort of their own home located at 740 Gostlin Street in Hammond, Indiana.
After putting some food into a boiling pot of water atop the stove, something drew Dorothy from her kitchen into the backyard. The yard was overgrown and littered with old cars and parts, relics of Joseph’s collection of automobile memorabilia. A tall wooden fence lined the yard that separated the Szany’s property from the double set of railroad tracks behind their home, and a vacant house sat next door.
A couple hours later, a police officer who was parked only a few blocks away preforming seat belt checks, was informed by a concerned motorist that they had witnessed smoke coming from the window of a nearby house on Gostlin Street. The officer decided to investigate and upon his arrival, he discovered smoke pouring from the windows, and Joseph Szany and his granddaughter on the front porch of the home.
Only minutes before the officers arrival, Dorothy and Jospeh’s 34-year-old granddaughter, Amy, who was living with them at the time, came home from work to find the kitchen ablaze. She entered the home to find her grandfather on the couch in the living room, unable to escape the fire without the use of his wheelchair. She helped him onto the front porch just as the officer arrived. She made several attempts to locate her grandmother, but as the smoke thickened she was forced to exit the home.
Fire crews responded to the scene and were able to extinguish the fire that had charred most of the kitchen. The culprit had been a pan left unattended on the stoves gas burner. Police searched the home for Dorothy but found no sign of her. As they fanned out to check the home’s backyard, they made a startling discovery. Dorothy lay dead on the ground, bludgeoned to death.
The coroner determined that although Dorothy had been struck multiple times in her head, face, and chest, the first blow had been the fatal one. Dorothy’s ultimate cause of death was a brain laceration due to a massive skull fracture. Dorothy’s blood was found on multiple objects in the back yard, however a murder weapon was never determined, and no suspect DNA was found.
Just up the street from the Szany home was bustling Calumet Avenue, an area that was known to be home to a vast array of homeless people and drug addicts. A hole in the Szany’s fence gave anyone passing by the opportunity to grab some scrap metal to sell, and on multiple occasions police had been summoned to the residence when Dorothy would catch someone prowling about looking for something to steal. However, police could find nothing missing from the yard.
Joseph was questioned by police in the hopes he might have seen or heard something, however due to his Alzheimer’s he couldn’t tell them any helpful information. Shortly after Dorothy’s murder, the couples eight children would tell police that their father, on multiple occasions, would ask if the windows were locked because, “they” said “they would come back to get him.” Sadly, three years after Dorthy’s murder, Joseph passed away. His children have said they don’t believe he ever fully understood what happened to “ma.”
Dorothy was a staple in the community. She was a very active member of St Josephs Catholic Church, where she helped co-found the community soup kitchen. According to all who knew her, she never missed an opportunity to serve at the kitchen, especially around the holidays. Dorothy was also an avid bowler and started a “club” to teach children how to bowl. She was a well known member of the American Legion, and at several other local organizations around town.
A reward was offered by the church and the American Legion for information about Dorothy’s death. Police questioned several persons of interest, however they never made an arrest and her case remains unsolved.

Women in STEM — A celebration of excellence and curiosity
Tumblr media
What better way to commemorate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day than to give  three of the world’s most accomplished scientists an opportunity to talk about their careers? On March 7, MindHandHeart invited professors Paula Hammond, Ann Graybiel, and Sangeeta Bhatia to share their career journeys, from the progress they have witnessed to the challenges they have faced as women in STEM. Their conversation was moderated by Mary Fuller, chair of the faculty and professor of literature.
Hammond, an Institute professor with appointments in the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, reflected on the strides made by women faculty at MIT, while acknowledging ongoing challenges. “I think that we have advanced a great deal in the last few decades in terms of the numbers of women who are present, although we still have a long way to go,” Hammond noted in her opening. “We’ve seen a remarkable increase over the past couple of decades in our undergraduate population here at MIT, and now we’re beginning to see it in the graduate population, which is really exciting.” Hammond was recently appointed to the role of vice provost for faculty.
Ann Graybiel, also an Institute professor, who has appointments in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and the McGovern Institute for Brain Research, described growing up in the Deep South. “Girls can’t do science,” she remembers being told in school, and they “can’t do research.” Yet her father, a physician scientist, often took her with him to work and had her assist from a young age, eventually encouraging her directly to pursue a career in science. Graybiel, who first came to MIT in 1973, noted that she continued to face barriers and rejection throughout her career long after leaving the South, but that individual gestures of inspiration, generosity, or simple statements of “You can do it” from her peers helped her power through and continue in her scientific pursuits.
Sangeeta Bhatia, the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, director of the Marble Center for Cancer Nanomedicine at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, and a member of the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science, is also the mother of two teenage girls. She shared her perspective on balancing career and family life: “I wanted to pick up my kids from school and I wanted to know their friends. … I had a vision for the life that I wanted.” Setting boundaries at work, she noted, empowered her to achieve both personal and professional goals. Bhatia also described her collaboration with President Emerita Susan Hockfield and MIT Amgen Professor of Biology Emerita Nancy Hopkins to spearhead the Future Founders Initiative, which aims to boost the representation of female faculty members pursuing biotechnology ventures.

Swynrpwrimo Task #16 - Character #Inspo
Find five existing fictional characters who remind you of your character (or who inspired your character) and write a little bit about how that character relates to your own.
[tracker]
Eight characters that inspired or reflect Marlin
Woo Gwang-ho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo) / Chidi Anagonye (The Good Place) / Joel Hammond (Santa Clarita Diet) / Dorothy Zbornak (Golden Girls) / Lorelai Gilmore (Gilmore Girls) / Appa (Kim's Convenience) / Aziraphale (Good Omens) / Baek Isak (Pachinko)
Woo Gwang-ho - The way they love!! Their children!! And he's a single dad! Gwang-ho's daughter is also disabled (autistic) like Nemo is (his wing) and he will not abide his daughter being treated poorly because of it and I love that for Gwang-ho and Marlin both. And the way they both gave up things important to them for their childrens' sake. Gwang-ho, his career as a lawyer. Marlin, his home country.
Chidi Anagonye - Look at that ball of existential dread and tell me that ain't Marlincore. I rest my case.
Joel Hammond - Joel is SO Marlin! The one-liners are simply /*chef's kiss*/ and it's the way he literally would and does do murder for his wife lmao. Your man would never.
Dorothy Zbornak - This is more inner Marlin than outer Marlin, but god Marlin really is...such a bitch <3 respectfully to mother Dorothy, patron saint of queen bitches <3
Lorelai Gilmore - Lorelai/Rory is such Marlin/Nemo energy! They're best friends<3 They love each other SO much and are super close, they sometimes just be hanging out like besties especially now that Nemo's twenty.
Appa - So, this is more so Appa's relationship with Janet in the show than the whole character. But his relationship with his daughter Janet is very Marlin and Nemo! The character as a whole does have Marlin vibes but especially that character relationship!
Aziraphale - This one is a little more you need to squint. But! Ahem, allow me. Aziraphale is bad at being an angel despite that simply being what he is. Marlin is often regarded as being "bad" at being a fairy, with his slightly individualistic tendencies. At the same time he's inherently "bad" at the human world because he's a Hollow-raised fairy. He's a little bit of a bastard, not enough to make him a terrible person, and a lot of it is internal or only comes out when talking shit to people he's close to but he honestly IS a little more mean-spirited than a fairy is expected to be.
Baek Isak - Y'all need to read this book and watch the Apple TV show! It's so good!!! Isak is such Marlincore. For Isak and Marlin both, enabling their wives and children to have a chance at a good life is the most important thing; neither man is ever motivated by the desire for his own success or his own happiness. Marlin cares a little bit about enjoying himself -- primarily with friendships and his hobbies, but it's still secondary to Nemo's needs and wants.
