Submissions so far!
Have a new mosaic header, with the women who were submitted so far, and a list, grouped by show/movie etc., under the readmore!
Tumblr media
Don't worry; if your champion isn't in here, you can still submit them via this form, until April 30th!
I chose these pictures based on the following ranked criteria:
included/linked in the submission OR
actual still from the movie/show/whatever, rather than a promo shot or fan art etc. AND
showing them in a characteristic and/or competent situation
for the characters Deanna Troi, Dr. Beverly Crusher and Seven of Nine, I decided to go with their most recent appearances in ST:PIC
If by any chance I chose NOT a still/screenshot, but your manip of the same, please let me know if you'd like me to take it down/replace it, or keep it and credit you!

For the STS ask thing:
In a role swap, what characters would swap roles and how would it change the story?
hi!! happy sts!
Alex and James would swap roles. Not much of their backstories would change, weirdly, but it doesn't need to change that much to get them to switch. It would massively change how the plot plays out, though, even if the bones and even some of the meat of the plot stays the same.
(this got a little longer than intended, so here have a cut)
James goes from being nephew of the previous editor (he's the current editor) of the herald who got brought onboard because he was curious about writing and then gradually promoted because he turned out to be competent -> still nephew of the previous editor, but now he's the one who dropped out of art school before picking up the writing thing and became an investigative journalist because he was curious, not because its what his dad did.
he still writes the article about nathaniel's mother getting murdered and the killer getting away with it, but now its because leo (who is already friends with nathaniel in the not-swapped version) suggested the idea and james got invested, not because the same thing happened to his father when he was a kid (<- why alex became an investigative journalist)
that would change the tone, i think, because then herald stops being a story about revenge and donovan stops haunting the narrative and starts being a story about justice/closure and being in love with your best friend (james is one of two (2) major characters in the entire story in a romantic relationship. the other is his leo, his boyfriend, who almost dies).
ronald isn't as relevant to the plot in the ways he is now (in how he's basically alex's uncle) but he's more relevant in the ways that his relationship with donovan sort of mirrors james' relationship with leo (except james and leo did something about it).
Alex is still motivated by her father's death, but it shifts to a 'doing justice to the newspaper and what he loved doing', not 'making sure murderers stop getting away with things because the government is shitty'. After Donovan dies, when she's like 15 ish, she expresses some sort of interest in the newspaper and Ronald convinces the then-editor to let her onboard in a minor role.
She gets promoted over time because she's actually competent (unlike many other people), and when the time comes for the then-editor to retire he picks her to be in charge. when James drops out and comes back to writing, she's the one to make the offer to hire him. Still for the same reasons, though.
Alex is still the product of her father drawing away from what he loved because of his obsession with the truth, but that doesn't play nearly as much of a role as it does now. I don't think she would've taken her father's penname if she isn't in the amount of danger that her being an investigative journalist puts her in, so she'd probably still be Alexandrina Gates, but she might've taken it anyway, just as a nod to him (which is part of the reason she picks mclelland in the first place, but not the reason she has a penname to begin with).
Leo's role wouldn't get affected at all. Still the guy who does the politics pages, still James' partner, still a little shit but in the best way possible.
Ronald's role would be different, but the bones of it would be exactly the same. He wouldn't swap with anyone (Donovan's personality is too different from his to make the plot work if Ronald is dead and Donovan is alive. Donovan has to be dead, or else the story doesn't work. The entire point of herald at present is that Donovan is dead, and Ronald & Alex aren't.), but he would get affected by James & Alex's swap.
Currently, his role in the plot is firstly as Alex's father's best friend, and secondly as 1/2 of the parallel to James & Leo's relationship. If James becomes the protagonist and occupies the space Alex does now, those roles switch. Him being a parallel is wildly more important, and it doesn't matter that he was Alex's father's best friend. All that matters is that he was Donovan's best friend, and Donovan = Leo, in a somewhat roundabout way.

Julie Byrne Album Review: The Greater Wings
Tumblr media
(Ghostly International)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Albums billed as being shaped by grief often don't follow linear rules, or at least a perfect pipeline of death to grief to songwriting. Famously, when Jeff Tweedy sang, "Tall buildings shake / Voices escape singing sad sad songs," on "Jesus Etc.", released in 2002, many listeners thought the line to be about 9/11, even though Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was finished before the attacks. More recently, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' Skeleton Tree hit shelves after his son Arthur tragically died from a fall; during its recording sessions, Cave amended many of the album's lyrics, which had been initially written by the time his son passed away, but to this day we don't know exactly what changed. On the title track to singer-songwriter Julie Byrne's new album The Greater Wings, she declares she will "name my grief to let it sing," rendering that grief a living, breathing entity, almost a character in the album. Halfway through the making of the record, Byrne's creative partner Eric Littmann suddenly passed away. After shelving it for six months, Byrne completed the album with producer Alex Somers, her first time in a conventional recording studio. The result is a stunning canvas of reflection on things that are no longer for this world, from people to relationships, filtered through Byrne's blue-colored glasses.
Really, a more apt timeline for comparison to The Greater Wings is Bell Witch's Mirror Reaper, an album that acts as a tribute to a former member while including documents of their physical presence, more living artifact than ghost. On Mirror Reaper, it was the late Adrian Guerra's voice; here, Littmann's synthesizers shine throughout the record, like his arpeggios harmonizing with Marilu Donovan's harp on "Summer Glass" and his wobbly instrumentation on "Conversation Is A Flowstate". To see how Byrne and Somers owned the material from there is breathtaking. It's hard to remember that before her previous record, Not Even Happiness, Byrne was a DIY folk singer. That album's glassy closing track "I Live Now As A Singer" not only informed The Greater Wings' expanded aesthetic, but it's proven to be a total turning point in Byrne's career. The production flourishes and additional instrumentation on The Greater Wings are sometimes subtle, but they move mountains. Synthesizers shimmer alongside acoustic guitar on the title track. Somers' backing vocals on "Portrait Of A Clear Day" nestle among Byrne's lead vocal turn, Donovan's harp, and Jake Falby's strings. "I get so nostalgic for you sometimes," Byrne sings, her hazy memories perfectly contrasting the crispness of the music.
In fact, contrast is a defining feature of The Greater Wings. On emotional centerpiece "Summer Glass", Byrne's words consist of recollections of specific moments in time ("You lit my joint with the end of your cigarette," "The tattoo you gave me lying in bed"), all-encompassing devotionals ("You are the family that I chose"), and broad therapeutic goals ("I want to be whole enough to risk again"). Even the instrumental "Summer's End" showcases the tactility of Donovan's harp against the atmospheric wash of the synthesizers and echoing bells. And Somers added textures to Littman's initial work on "Conversation Is A Flowstate", making it a harmonic, yet percussive and conversational push-pull as Byrne recites affirmations: "Permission to feel it, it's alright / Permission to grieve, it is alright / Healing can be heartbreaking, it's alright."
Making yourself "whole," or as close to it as possible, is not an easy or definite process, in life or in music. Even on a song like "Flare", Byrne goes through multiple so-called "stages of grief," including bargaining and acceptance, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's modular synth buoying her words. The Greater Wings, then, is as close to universal art as it gets, a treatise on the human penchant for imperfection, for being naturally unable to fully appreciate something while it's there. "I tell you now what for so long I did not say / That if I have no right to want you / I want you anyway," Byrne sings with smoky heartbreak on "Lightning Comes Up From The Ground", a title that makes literal what happens when an event in your life shakes you to your core: It turns your world upside-down.
