@inception30daychallenge, Day 2: Classify each character according to the alignment chart.
Using this as reference:
Tumblr media
Ariadne: Neutral Good. Ariadne is the audience stand-in, and she is curious and wants to know everything, immediately. She's willing to cross lines in the pursuit of knowledge--to invade Cobb's dreams, and sneak into the memories he doesn't want her to see. She wants to help him and help the team succeed, and she's willing to think outside the box to do so. Arthur: Lawful Good. HEAR ME OUT. Arthur will break rules, yes. But when he does, it's in support of someone else. He thinks outside the box--to make sure things go according to plan. He teaches and trains and he provides the structure and support to make sure things go as smoothly as possible. He pays attention to detail and keeps the rules in mind. And he clearly does respect authority--he may not LIKE it, but he listens to Cobb anyway. His entire job is to keep everyone safe, after all. Cobb: Neutral Evil. OKAY maybe this is a little harsh, but.... my man. His main and only goal is to get home to his children, and "regardless of impact" is sort of his Whole Thing. He'll lie to his own wife to get her to leave Limbo with him, he'll lie to the entire team during inception just for the chance to get home. This man knows what he wants and will do whatever the fuck he has to in order to get it, and you only get one apology if you get in his way (if you're lucky). Eames: Chaotic Good. Eames absolutely values freedom and choice, and is clearly not a fan of authority. The man is a forger, not only in dreams but in reality (or it is strongly implied--the quip about his spelling, the comment about references being his speciality, etc). When Cobb shows up, Eames is not thrilled to see him, and he's ready to quit the job when he finds out about Cobb and Yusuf's sedation gamble. He throws about terms like "anti-monopolistic tendencies" and comes up with the entire inception plan on his own, and at the same time absolutely pegs Fischer's daddy issues. ...I had reasons why this supported the fact that Eames isn't a fan of authority figures but it escapes me now, oops. Yusuf: Lawful Evil. Look. I adore Yusuf as much as the next person. But the man did take Cobb's share of the money in exchange for sedating everyone hard enough to send them to Limbo and agreed to keep it a secret, and the man runs a Dream Den where people go to dream for 12 hour chunks of time, and I highly doubt it's out of the goodness of his heart. I'm just saying. The man has skills, and he knows how to make them marketable. Saito: Lawful Evil. Like our friend Yusuf, Saito is fabulous. But he hires a dreamshare team to incept a rival to make sure his company isn't second to a global conglomerate. And he insists on joining the team to make sure it goes as planned. This man is a man who knows how to get what he wants and will do what he has to to make it happen.

I’m NOT a Dominic cobb apologist and a part of my brain says he just wanted the best forger in the world on his last chance at getting back his children, but a small part of my brain also says that getting Arthur and Eames together was his parting gift to his them.
He knew Arthur dropped everything for him (I agree with the popular headcanon that Arthur was with eames when mal passed and left him to go with cobb) and followed his sorry ass around the world and took hits thrown by him and for him with no apology in return. So even if he doesn’t make it, he wanted Arthur to find his happiness?
i feel inception wasn’t just making Robert to dissolve his fathers empire but also Cobbs little plan of performing inception on two of his best friends ;

My brain did a thing:
An old man
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Filled with regret
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Waiting to die alone
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right, these two characters probably have more differences than similarities. Their main common points basically are: a) tragically losing their wives - with themselves contributing to that happening; b) IMO being major egoists (Viserys more of a passive kind, Cobb an active one).
Also I can`t help but think about the 'waiting to die alone' part: how, despite wildly different circumstances, both chose their solitude (Cobb was forced to leave his kids - but his emotional solitude was of his own making), and, on the face of it, they had a right to make that choice - except it led (or could have led, in Cobb`s case) to grave consequences for other people. Where does the right to grieve and set one`s boundaries end and the responsibility to and for others begin? Everyone has their answer, it seems.

Fyi this came up while ranking the Inception characters from least to most attractive on a variety of criteria lmao
*Me and @musicallyanonymous talking about Inception*
Me: I am aware that Mal's only purpose as a plot device is to be the tragic, sexy french wife but unfortunately that really works for me.
Them: I know.

do you have any good shakespeare retelling book recs?
what a beautiful time to ask this, says guy who has left this ask collecting cobwebs in his inbox for months! because guess who has two thumbs and just finished queen goneril by erin shields! WHAT a fucking play, holy SHIT, this is some of the best characterization of the lear sisters that i've ever read and the exploration of womanhood as filtered through class + race + shitty families + political maneuvering is so so so good. also the things shields does with the og playtext... chef's fucking KISS
anyway, recency bias aside, i've been meaning to make a post about my favorite shakespeare retellings for a while, and i think i never actually did it because i wanted to make a lear retelling ranking list and then i never read some of the ones on my TBR. so whatever. the learlist will happen someday. here are my favorites in general. (here is my goodreads shelf for the retellings i've read, good and bad, and here is the shelf for the ones i have yet to read.)
in no particular order:
a thousand acres by jane smiley: outsold. epitome of what makes an effective retelling--a book that clearly has something to say about and to the original text, but that also isn't afraid to diverge, to exclude here and zoom in there. ungraciously, this is "lear on a farm" and it starts a little slow, but holy fucking shit, i can't do justice in a paragraph to the way this book unraveled me. one of the best books of all time mayhaps. also, introduced the edmund character by describing his ass. 10/10
the last true poets of the sea by julia drake: i don't read that much YA anymore but jesus fucking christ. books tailored for me specifically. twelfth night retelling about siblings + mental illness + being bisexual + love triangles that actually make sense (emotions are confusing!) instead of being contrived + beautiful description + excellent dialogue + THE MENTAL ILLNESS. books that made me start crying in zoom class in 2020
rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead by tom stoppard: kind of a cop-out answer because we all know this one. but that does not detract from how good it is. this is one of those plays, at least for me, that makes me think, "ohhhhhh, THIS is what theater can do. this is using its medium to the absolute utmost." it is so clever and it makes me want to cry. i think about "i don't know. it's the same sky" more often than i can say
american moor by keith hamilton cobb: not exactly a retelling, but a one-man play about a Black man auditioning for the lead role in Othello, tangling as he does with his relationship with shakespeare's work and cultural dominance. suuuuuch a good fucking play even beyond the analysis of othello (which is excellent); the language is so fucking incredible. everyone who likes shakespeare should read this.
teenage dick by mike lew: modern teenage richard iii; this one's more reimagining than retelling, because it diverges pretty sharply from the plot of richard iii, but god, it's so fucking fun. and upsetting! really upsetting also.
foul is fair by hannah capin: i will be so real. i read this in high school and some of the YA books i've revisited since did not hold up for me. so idk if i can tell you this is "good" with my full chest. but the pitch is "lady macbeth gets sexually assaulted at a party and decides to fucking kill the boys who did it" and i stayed up until like 1am to finish it because it was such a vicious gleaming wild ride
the stars undying by emery robin: does this count? hard to say, because it's just as much a retelling of roman history than shakespeare's antony and cleopatra (honestly, more, since it focuses on the era where caesar and cleopatra were lovers, which is before shakespeare's play). but i'm counting it anyway because it's bisexual space opera cleopatra and it's the best book i've read so far in 2024 and it's making me crazy and i'm writing a thesis on it < genuinely
peerless by jihae park: macbeth, but college applications, featuring asian macbeths (they're twin sisters >:3) who think their classmate has taken their place in their dream school because of affirmative action/DEI. this play is absolutely VICIOUS. it's macbeth x heathers. think it mirrors macbeth in faltering a little in its final stretch, but it still fucks hard
the wednesday wars by gary d. schmidt: okay, not a retelling; this is about a preteen boy in the 60s. but it's one of the best most genuine and heartwarming books i've ever read and it manages to be hilarious while also foregoing cheap slapstick punching-low humor for a hell of a lot of warmth and passion. and the main character interacts with shakespeare a lot as a running theme so i can justify putting it on this list. #evangelizing
of course, i would be remiss not to mention that @suits-of-woe / @mjulianwrites has written the best take on Two Gentlemen of Verona to ever exist, and i mean that quite seriously. unfortunately it hasn't been published yet so we'll all just have to prayer-circle about it. i would also be remiss not to take the opportunity to. uh. coughs. do a bit of casual self-promo. if you 1. have ocd 2. have gender or 3. think about malvolio a lot. boy do i have the novella for you
will definitely add to this when i read more retellings; feel free to drop recs in the tags/replies/reblogs/my askbox!

SW Hades AU September Update
Links and previous updates: May - June - July - August - everything else in this AU
For the month of September I have for you a finished character illustration for not only one but two characters for the Hades AU! One boon giver in the form of Shaak Ti,
Tumblr media
and Obi-wan, this grumpy old desert hermit who is still missing shading from his dusty surroundings.
Tumblr media
AND below the cut I will show you the designs for all the keepsakes I sketched out for the characters this month :3
But - before I go into some ramblings - let's have another poll:
(I know it's a lot like the last poll, but I'm really trying to work on drawings of the boon giver characters while I still remember all the layer settings I need for their glow and radiant spikes ^^;)
And now on for the ramblings and thoughts behind the process of the art I've created this month:
One last rant about me and replicating the Hades art style
I have touched on my struggles with how I translate the Hades art style into my project in the previous update, and unfortunately the perfectionist in me refuses to let it go... so I'll muse on that a bit more in this one as well. Last time, I promise. I've come to the necessary conclusions that I'll let the topic go once I typed these out.
I found this very interesting video that I wish I'd seen before I started this project.
youtube
It is a very interesting breakdown of the Hades art style. Now I have to admit that I am very very bad at observation. Therefore I heavily rely on others pointing out patterns and defining characteristics before I can consciously start building on those on my own. For example: when I started more seriously working on this Hades AU project my main objective was to get better at lineart. The way I saw it Hades artworks had very clean and solid linearts with lots of black (thanks to another video that pointed that out as one of the 3 major definig features of the style) but if I look at it more closely the lines and shading are a lot looser, and more confident than what I ended up using.
I quite enjoy doing it, don't get me wrong, but there is an up- and downside to hunting down single pixels that are out of order (b it for lineart or shading) and 100% zoom in... which is silly and unnecessary, since I have to scale down my art quite a bit before posting anyway, so who would see anyway?
Also at this point I'm very much facing the dilemma of how much I can change in my approach to this style to still keep this entire project coherent. I'm more in favour of coherency at this point, so I'm just trying to soak up these lessons for future references.
One of these lessons was another point that was very fascinating in this video (aside from how this video picks a multiply layer approach to shading... which I had abandoned after Boba and Cobb for whatever reason?) was to point out the one dominant, more saturated colour in a character art, and how all the rest are desaturated to support that dominating character.
Shaak Ti and my babies
And I actually was very consciously trying to apply that with Shaak Ti! (I'm so proud of myself, finally incorporating a lesson into my work, look at me go!) It didn't exactly go as I'd planned, in a great deal because initially I wanted the red of her skin to be the more dominant and defining colour. But as I went about colouring in the baby clones as well I realized that the blue of her montrals and lekku would be a much better choice, and have the other redish and warmer tones of her robe and clothes, and the skin tone of the cadets to play the supporting colour role. Yet again, half my screens keep eating away the hue and saturation of my reds, but I think that this approach worked out just fine in the end. The blue-purple of her stripes, her eyes and lips look nice and pretty, and the blue in the cadet uniforms tie the entire composition of all these characters nicely together.
I'd also switched up the gem sparkle highlight colours for this one (and Obi-wan too, since they worked so well with Shaak Ti) from the very limiting base 6 fully saturated colours on others (that don't really show up in print anyways...).
And lastly why they are little ghosties in the alternate version:
Ahead of that however a brief introduction is in order. From left to right they are Ray (depicted here the last time he was biggest of the bunch), Slider (my anxious little field medic), and Goldie (my silly little goldfish who claimed the name before it could stick to Slider). For the record they all grow up just fine to join the war effort.
In this case they are more of a stand-in for all the clone cadets on Kamino, especially those who didn't get to grow up, the training of whom Shaak Ti ended up overseeing. (I don't remember if canonically there had been any of them on Kamino when the Empire destroyed their facilities.... but I'd bet that there must have been.) They deserve someone to look after them too, after all.
Tumblr media
Also I wanted to see if I can make the Hades shade design work for me. The answer is.... eh, jury's still out, but no, not really. Luckily however, before I have to figure out if I stubbornly would want to change that, it seems like I'm done with my semi-transparent or shade clones. Wolffe is gonna be just fine, solid and grumpy as you can imagine.
Obi-wan
I don't have much to say about the grouchy old man, except that he was surprisingly easy to finish once I got over worrying about the pressure I'd put on myself because of this character illustration.
I fear to say this, but I'm pretty sure I should draw another version of him... like how Patroclus stands up from his hunched over pose and stands tall and strong and matching Achilles with his own spear once you reunite them in the game. And call on them for assistance. So I guess it would be cool if he could stand back-to-back with Cody, with his lightsaber back in his hand, and looking like someone who (allegedly) has his life together XD
Tumblr media
Oh! There is one thing. It was a last minute change but I'm so pleased with the stained glass pieces of his teacup! It's his keepsake as well :))
Keepsakes
These speak for themselves, I believe. Special thanks to Quatre for brainstorming a few of these with me <3 Funnily enough Cody's snapped of antennae is the one I feel least sure about now that I have the whole lineup. They feel very in character for Cody (and how he gets his entertainment out of trolling Din in this AU) but it feels a little silly, you know? Especially with how little they look like antennae X"D
Tumblr media
Cody - antenna from his armor, Rex - one of his DC-17 blasters, Wolffe - a tooth with "Plo's bros" carved into it, Bo-Katan - a medal/locket with the pattern of the throne of Mandalore, Cobb - his scarf, Boba - a black melon surrounded by stained glass and a fistful of sand, Echo and Fives - a domino
Tumblr media
Omega - a clone trooper doll, Kit - a shell and pearl, Paz - a nesting doll with a Pantoran on the inside and a Mandalorian on the outside, Shaak Ti - akul teeth, Satine - a calla lily brooch like she wears in her hair, Ahsoka - a glowing feather from Morai, Leia - Lola
Tumblr media
Obi-wan - a fancy teacup, Quinlan - whatever is the Star Wars equivalent of a pendrive, Fennec - a handful of bullets, Sabine - airbrush, Ezra - a tooka brooch made of pebbles and snail shell, Maul - Talisman of finding (the one Savege used to find him)
Tumblr media
Anakin - multitools, Mythosaur - a mythosaur pendant, Aphra - Spice Dice used for a variant of Sabacc, Luke - toy ship, The Armorer - her hammer
It's a bit wild to see all of them laid out like this i'm not gonna lie :D
So that's it for now. As for the next month I'm hoping to surprise-finish Aphra (like I did with Obi-wan), maybe do something about the surpirse I can maybe do for Fives and Echo and why they haven't gotten their character interaction yet, sketch out a new character and maybe start lining Bo-Katan and her gang. It should be doable, right? XD Also I promise that this was my last rant about my relationship to how I've given up replicating the game's style as close as possible. Cross my heart and all that.
Taglist of anyone who wants to be pinged once a month for these updates <3 If you want to be added to the list send me a message, or just reply to this post (a 👀 would do, nothing fancy required ;))
@elwinged @yeehawgeek @velsayshi @lionsaint
If you want to be taken off the list just message me and I'll take you off, no hard feelings :)

Missed a few days of the @inception30daychallenge so here's a catch-all! c:
Day 15: Cobb’s greatest parenting strength and weakness.
Cobb's strengths as a parent are that he truly does love and cherish those kids, and he adores them. He's protective, and he will encourage their creativity and make sure they are safe and protected. He wants to spend time with them and to hear what they're thinking and doing, and that's very important.
His weaknesses... I think he'll be hesitant to talk about Mal. As someone who lost a parent at the age of 7, I know how important hearing about that parent is. When you're that little, you don't know your parents as people, just as parents. Phillipa and James will want and need reminders of who Mal was both as a parent and a person, and Dom has a hard time even talking to them about the fact that she's dead--as evidenced by James's "Is Mommy with you?" being met with "We've talked about this." Yes, but not enough. James is too little to understand. Phillipa is hurt and will have abandonment issues. If Cobb is smart, he'll get them all therapy. But Cobb has a bad habit of thinking he's right and knows best, so.... who knows??
Day 21: What would you want to use dreamshare technology for?
I think it would be especially great for THERAPY. Use it to help people overcome their phobias (like mine and thunderstorms and fires!), let them use it to have conversations with their projections--the anxiety, depression, etc. Let people use it to have conversations with people who are no longer with us (although, speaking as someone with many late relatives... that's a slippery slope and might not be appropriate for everyone). Crap, let me go into a dream and unleash all of the anger and resentment I have on people from my past. Let me relive arguments and say the shit I'm still thinking about that I should have said hours or weeks or years later. Process trauma in a safe and supervised way. Let your therapist/psychologist see the memories you can't put into words and let them guide you through dealing with shit.
Also? To have some FUN. Let me go to Disneyworld without having to travel and pay money. Let me go to a theme park with no lines and no waiting and ride my favorite rides without getting sick! Let me have a day at the lake or on the ocean during my lunch break! Give me some alone time to curl up and read a book BY MYSELF without losing time in reality! Let me attend a Taylor Swift concert because god knows I never will manage to in reality!!!

so,
I love the kick scene. The cheeky smirk, the exasperated look, the dangling legs and steady foot hovering near the unstable chair and how mr. zimmers music gives the perfect drop to create one of the most visually satisfying scenes ever.
but.. I also like the immediate line which precedes it.
Tumblr media
from the beginning of the movie, we get to see snippets of how arthur is well and truly done with Cobbs shit and the unpleasantness it brings. he knows cobb can potentially sabotage the entire mission, and being the pointman, he needs to ask the important questions, he needs to know how they all wake up. But here, he brings up the previous mishap. while arthur really doesn’t need to add the part he got shot by cobb, he says it anyway..
Is it anger? Is it frustration? Or is it both? Is it both of those and also cause he’s hurt?
that wasn’t the first time arthur was killed by either of his best friends, and even though it comes as some sort of twisted mercy from cobb, it still stings. He hides it as much as he can but he’s only human. it’s not easy to gloss over the fact that despite not being able to kill his own projection, cobb is always ready to kill his only friend who dropped everything and ran away with him. he doesn’t show remorse over it and even here, when arthur does mention it, the most cobb manages is an exasperated eye roll. it’s all arthur will ever get from dominic “one apology” cobb.
eames sees this. he sees thru the brittle anger and fragile frustration and sees how hurt arthur really is. eames also knows that he can’t interrupt and may be try giving a cobb piece of mind or acknowledge arthurs pain, both eames knows that Arthur wouldn’t appreciate. So he goes with one thing he has always been good at in getting Arthur to relax a little.
Distraction. tried and tested and confirmed over the years to get an exhausted arthur to smile, a scared arthur to chuckle, a stressed arthur to smirk, a worried arthur to snort or a sad arthur to give a fond eye roll.
and it works. the moment is stolen from cobb and eames can’t help by smile at arthur levelling him with a lovable bitch face. It’s not perfect, and may be a poor substitute for a hug that eames really wants to give, but he knows he has made arthur tear himself from a bad memory and look at eames with a promise of some laughter.

Loving all the baseball stuff in Ultraman: Rising so far. Hideki "Godzilla" Matsui referenced in the beginning, the double meaning of "I stopped believing in Giants a long time ago," the coincidence of protagonist Ken Sato playing for the same MLB team that Shohei Ohtani signed with last year...
Let's talk about Sato's career batting average though. .420??? In our world, Ty Cobb has the record for highest career batting average with .366. Nobody in MLB has even cracked .400 in a single season since the forties. Baseball is unusual among team sports in that one dominant player can only do so much for his team (see the Los Angeles Angels' many mediocre seasons when they had both Ohtani and Mike Trout), but his ego's well-justified. (Also, it seems like he's only been Ultraman for a few months, but his need to keep his identity secret has added weight here; his achievements would definitely come into question if people found out he was a superhero.) 624 stolen bases would also place him 14th on the all-time list; not as mind-bogglingly impressive, but it's a counting stat and it seems like he has plenty of years left to play.
The line about having never won a World Series is interesting. Possibly the film is set before the Dodgers' championship in 2020, or Sato just joined them afterwards. The only hints about the year we've been given so far are that Matsui was still playing in Japan in the opening (his last season there was 2002) and the main action takes place 20 years later. Or: the film is set in a world where kaiju have been attacking for decades and I shouldn't be taking this part of it so seriously.
