Regarding your Eowyn tag, because I fully agree on loving both versions, I think it all comes down to respect for the original work.

While the lotr trilogy isn't flawless (nothing human made is), the deep love, respect and understanding of what the story is about comes through from the choises made.

I don't think making changes when adapting a work to a new medium is bad. It's just that so many resent adaptation seem to completely miss the mark on what the core idea of the story/characters is and make changes without bothering to make sure they understand the rammifications of those changes.

When adapting a work of literature, one who truly understands the story and its characters is bound to be very careful with the changes - and it's not about the scope but about the nature of those. It is a hard work but very gratifying (if one does it well). There are reasons LotR trilogy is so well-loved (while not being flawless) - and you named the most significant of them all.
