Keeley Jones, Independent Woman - Rant

I love Keeley but I'm worried that they haven't had a definitive arc for her since S1. I'm sure things will all work out for her in the end because she's a fighter, however, I am exhausted with what she's been put through as a character since S2.

After a stellar arc in S1, honestly, she was mostly Rebecca's friend and Roy's girlfriend in S2 (I love both relationships but still). She didn't give Rebecca tough advice like she was willing to do in S1. And by the end of S2, she wasn't as direct with Roy either. I wrote about it more than a year ago.

On top of that, she's been majorly put-upon: Jamie's confession at the funeral, Nate hitting on/sexually assaulting her, Roy telling her about the teacher but not asking her if she was okay about Nate, and then the dogbreeder hitting on her a little too forcefully, there was a lot of stuff thrown at her rather than her character in action. Much of Keeley's business acumen/success was behind the scenes. Because of this, I was certain she was going to be the face at the beginning of S3.

Now this season we've hardly dealt with any of her S2 issues, but in addition: she has a break-up for reasons that seem to be unknown to her, Barbara hating on her, dealing with Shandy (who I think is redeemable but we'll see), having the most un-PR staff ever, then having jokes/lines beneath her intelligence, and now dealing with a new boss who she didn't know existed, and who, online has conjectured, might hit on her too? I'm tired.

And if Jack does hit on her, it's a hugely inappropriate power dynamic, similar to Sam and Rebecca, probably worse. Jack controls Keeley's funding and could ruin her. But then again, the show hasn't dealt with Sam & Rebecca yet either. I'm a huge Roy/Keeley shipper but I realize, in terms of representation, it would suck if they chose her boss as a romantic interest. I hope they're just friends, or if Jack isn't a positive force, I hope it's for no other reason than she's a jerk. I would also like them to deal with people taking advantage of Keeley's kindness and to have her set boundaries.

I think Keeley is one of the most fascinating characters created for television. Even if everything I've mentioned is addressed, to me, they've waited too long and they've squandered a wonderful opportunity to grow the character in front of us, rather than through unshown scenes. So while I feel Keeley will come out on top, I would have preferred to have witnessed more of her active growth onscreen. Give her the happiness and love she deserves.
