Hmm... So I don't actually watch a lot of magical girl anime anymore. But... I guess for a list: (I'll mention the two you said.) ~Sailor moon ~Pretty cure (Although I'll be it, I haven't watched the newer stuff) ~Mermaid melody pichi pichi pitch (I do wish there was more mermaid anime! I like mermaid forest/mermaid saga but that's not magical girl.) ~Mew Mew Power /Tokyo Mew Mew (haven't seen the new one >.<; If you can guess the trend. LOL) ~Yuri Yuna is a hero ~Princess Tutu ~Pretear ~Puella Magi Madoka Magica ~Card Captors (childhood fav, this is sailor moon were my *Fav*. =3 ) ~Uta Kata ~Shugo Chara ~Revolutionary Girl Utena ~Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne ~Wedding peach ~Ojamajo Doremi Na-i-sho (... this I watched so long ago D= I remember the 4kids dub. Haku Yowane Theme color: Snow Haku is a sincere and gentle girl who wanted to be a huntress because she was insecure and bullied in the past. She wanted to become strong to prove her strength to herself. Haku’s weapon is named Wanderess.

Neru Akita Theme color: Ochre Neru is a misunderstood girl with a temper. She has a similar reason of becoming a huntress as Haku, but is less likely to admit it. Neru is very stubborn.

Taya Soune Theme color: Blue Taya became a huntsman because his father recommended the path to him. He found it scary and difficult, wanting to give up, but didn’t want to disappoint his father. Taya’s true passion is music. Taya’s weapon is named Harmonis.

Ruko Yokune Theme color: Indigo

Uta Utane Theme color: Purple Uta wanted to be a huntress because she’s a thrill seeker. She was always too scared to pursue music, (her other passion,) but not to fight monsters! Uta is a sentient robotic humanoid, and is capable of emitting an aura. But like faunuses, she is prejudiced against for it… Uta’s weapon is basically a magical machine gun that doubles as an axe. The name of her weapon is Glitch.

Amelie Suagr Theme color: Candy Ame was inspired to be a huntress after seeing a movie. This is why she started. She’s clumsy and too idealistic. But Ame didn’t want to give up… Ame’s weapon is giant lollipop-shaped hammer, that into a sharp elemental scepter that is also a jumping stick that can propel her. It’s usually a cane in the shape of a giant key, but she turns it into a weapon when needed. The name of her weapon is Whimsicalibur.

Ritsu Namine Theme color: Scarlet Ritsu Namine is a faunus with traits of a marten (red weasel.) He was part of the White Fang once but quit once he realized how corrupt the group had become. Ritsu may be seem rough, but feels deep inside he doesn’t deserve forgiveness, as his role in the White Fang was quite significant. He acts tough because he knows no other way to act, but being with his friends helped him grow and show his sincere side. Ritsu’s weapon is called Inferno. It’s part-flamethrower.

Koto Fuuga Theme color: Orange Koto is a wild daredevil who loves wildlife, and wanted to become a huntress to protect animals from Grimm. She isn’t the brightest with book-smarts, but has incredible street-smarts.

Luana Kai Theme color: Teal She uses a sword which seems a bit old-fashioned, but is great with it. The name of her weapon is Sparring Wave.

Nagisa Onda Theme color: Magenta A girl who is not so confident, and insecure about her fighting skills. In the meanwhile, Rhona is trying to help her as much as she can, but Nagisa wants to become strong enough to do things on her own and stop being Rhona’s “burden.”

Late to the party (Tumblr has a habit of the reblog button not working right for days at a time for me these days), but I’d note that I would not be surprised in the slightest if the Concept Movie and Akuhomu’s outfit are Tutu references (the Drosselmeyer in Rebellion might also be!) even if Tutu never really hit it that big; PMMM has quite a pile of things that might be references to other anime/manga/LNs/VNs that were moderately but not particularly successful.  Most famously there’s the chairs; I’m not sure it was ever explicitly confirmed, but they are generally held to be a reference to the anime adaptation of Bokurano. But there’s other things, too - for one, I am more than a little suspicious that the entire Holy Quintet’s first and last names are all references[1], and if so one of the more promising candidates for what Akemi is referencing is Saikano (Saishuuheiki Kanojo, aka She, the Ultimate Weapon), which I’m pretty sure was less popular than Tutu even during the day.

Madoka: Not sure, in part because there’s a bunch of solid but not outstanding candidates - Madoka Ayukawa from Kimagure Orange Road is the most obvious name, but I’m not convinced that fits at all (it might if late-timeline Homura’s public persona is drawing off that Madoka, or if KOR was personally important to Butch Gen or another key member of the staff).  Other notable candidates include multiple characters from Gilgamesh (it’s the family name of the main characters there) and Madoka Narumi (Spiral).  The best candidate may actually be Madoka Wakamatsu, the rival character from Full Moon wo Sagashite.

Kaname - If this is a reference, it’s probably to Kaname Chidori (Full Metal Panic!).  There’s really no other plausible candidate, and it would fit given some of the timey-wimey stuff from the later light novels.

Homura - Given how high Mai-HiME is in the Madoka influences list (for the obvious reason that it was the first real attempt at pulling off mahou shoujo Evangelion - Kyoko in particular is drawing massively off that show, and I suspect the PMMM committee got Kajiura specifically for another crack at the Mai-HiME OST), I’d be surprised if this is anyone other than said show’s Nagi Homura

Akemi - As noted above, I suspect Saikano (Akemi, no family name known).

Kyoko - There’s a decent number of candidates, but one stands out: Kyoko Zeppelin Souryuu (Evangelion), aka Asuka’s mom.

Sakura - Almost certainly Sakura Kinomoto (CCS), natch.

Sayaka - Not sure; actual candidates (i.e, ones that predate PMMM) are actually rather thin on the ground here.  The best seem to be a Pani Poni Dash character (Shaft did the anime version), an Ojamajo Doremi side character, and the female lead from a 1980s OVA called Demon City Shinjuku.  Maybe there’s a manga character I’m missing, or maybe I’m wrong and Sayaka’s name isn’t actually a reference.  The one other obvious possibility if my theory about name references is correct is that Butch Gen was being self-referential and the actual reference is a slightly shorter name: Saya (Saya no Uta).  (Alternately or additionally, there might be a character reading pun or the like here.  I would not be surprised at all if Sayaka is among other things a friendly(?) jab at Ryukishi07, probably through Rena Ryuuguu from Higurashi; if so I wouldn’t be shocked if Sayaka’s name is part of that somehow.)

Miki - Miki Kaoru (Utena) is the first name that comes to mind; there’s also an obvious Precure candidate, though (and voiced by Eri Kitamura to boot!) and one other good one from a show I can’t quite remember.

Mami - Extremely obvious suspect in the name of the eponymous Mami from Creamy Mami.

Tomoe - Also an extremely obvious suspect: Hotaru Tomoe (Sailor Moon).

Hey does anyone know or have a source for how well Princess Tutu did…in any country, but preferably Japan, when it initially came out? Financially and critically? Does other Japanese media (like other anime) reference it at all? Is Madoka Magica Concept Movie more likely to be a homage or just a coincidence (ballet isn’t exactly symbolism unique to Tutu).

Princess Tutu feels well-known among magical girl fans but obscure literally anywhere else, like almost “that one weird childhood show that you only remember during a fever dream” but I’m not sure.
