What it is: Your opportunity to have your say in how your tax dollars are spent. The budget gets finalized on June 30th & we the people have the opportunity to demand our money not be spent on putting cops in schools but rather invest in resources & social workers for the children. . That’s what defunding the police actually means. It means taking our tax money & investing it into our children & communities instead of adding more money to inflated police budgets. . It’s a new concept but when has that every stopped Durham? . Durham has 319 years of recorded history & what we’re doing hasn’t worked in that time. Time to say buck it & try something new. . How can this change the world? Durham has set the bar for race relations in the US time & time again. . Remember on August 14th, 2017 when the confederate statue on Main St. was yanked down? Within 24 hours more confederate statues were removed in the US than ever before. . It set off a chain reaction across the US. Within a couple of months New Yorkers were protesting in the streets wearing hats that said, “Do It Like Durham.” . The world is watching. . We’re living in a Major historic moment. . Chicago: ‘No monuments to racism’
By Catherine Kavanaugh
Near a busy corner on Chicago’s South Side, on April 7, cars slowed and passersby honked or raised their fists in support at the sight of a small group holding a banner proclaiming, “Honor Black Lives — No Monuments to Racism.”
Chants of “You can’t stop the revolution! Black women bring the solution!” rang out as more activists and community members gathered to demand the removal of a monument to Confederate soldiers known as the Confederate Mound. The 50-foot marker dominates Oak Woods Cemetery in the Black working-class neighborhood known as Grand Crossing.
Since last September, members of Smash White Supremacy-Chicago, led by Black Youth Project 100 and the local branch of Workers World Party, have gone door-to-door in Grand Crossing to investigate the impact of the Confederate monument on the people who live in its shadow. They were also promoting BYP 100’s #HonorHerLabor campaign to replace the monument with a statue of anti-lynching activist Ida B. Wells. The grave of that legendary African-American journalist, newspaper editor and anti-lynching activist rests just yards from the Confederate Mound.

Struggle Against White Supremacy Claims Victory: CHARGES DROPPED in #DefendDurham case!
On February 20, Durham District Attorney Roger Echols announced that all charges had been dropped against the eight anti-racist freedom fighters stemming from the righteous people’s toppling of the Confederate monument in Durham, N.C., on Aug. 14. This includes not only the five who were to return to court on April 2 – Takiyah Thompson, Elena Everett, Jess Jude, Q Wideman, and Joe Karlik –  but additionally overturns Loan Tran’s earlier plea. On February 19, Raul Jimenez was found not guilty on all charges, and the cases against Dante Strobino and Peter Gilbert were dismissed.
This victory is the result of one thing and one thing alone: the conviction and determination of a mighty movement against white supremacy and the racist system that it upholds
