The Bible’s full of people whose issue we know but not their name. I wonder if God inspired this way of telling their stories to make a point about what we so often are when we’re stuck on a mat [like the man in John 5]— missing out on the identity He planned for us. A woman is caught in adultery in John, chapter 8. We never know her name, but we sure do know her issue. A man born blind is seen in John, chapter 9. We never know his name, but we sure do know his issue. And in Mark, chapter 5, is a demon-possessed man. He’s cutting himself. He’s growling. He’s screaming. He’s hanging around tombs. We never know his name, but we sure do know his issue. Some of the unidentified people in the Bible with issues were no doubt more comfortable sitting in them than others... but our culture today makes monuments about our issues. We make hashtags and create movements about our issues. And I believe and I’m fearful that many of us are so comfortably into our issues that we’re beginning to forget our names, to forget the identity God planned for us. All because we love to sit in our issues. God is searching for those of you who’ve been all caught up in your issue. He’s looking for those of you who’ve forgotten your name, the identity He planned for you. And He’s searching for those of you who’ve been stuck in a cycle for years and feel like you’ll never get up. He wants you to know you are not your issue. You are a son or daughter of the Most High. You are His prized possession. You are His treasure. He left heaven to get to you. You are not your past. But if you want to get up, it will mean taking responsibility. So many of us get comfortable in our cycle of sin. We get comfortable with our issue. We get comfortable in our addiction. We get comfortable with being a victim. But Jesus says, it’s okay to not be okay, but it’s not okay to stay that way. I have come to heal you.

It is very important that we should understand just how Jesus did treat [the sinner]. It is easy to draw the wrong lesson altogether and to gain the impression that Jesus forgave lightly and easily, as if the sin did not matter. [In truth, however, He did not effectively] abandon judgment and say, "Don't worry; it's quite all right." [He never pretended that sin had no consequence, or that it did no harm. Rather, in both mercy and justice,] what He did was, as it were, to defer sentence. He said, "I am not going to pass a final judgment now [for I do not wish to lose you to sin; therefore,] go and prove that you can do better. [Yes,] you have sinned; [but] go and sin no more, and I'll help you all the time. At the end of [your efforts] we will, [together,] see how you have lived." He was always intensely interested, not only in what a person had been, but also in what a person could be. He did not say that what they had done did not matter– broken laws and broken hearts always matter– but He was sure that every man has a future as well as a past, [and He strove to lovingly yet firmly draw every sin-wounded soul into that healing hope with Him.] He did not say: "It's all right; don't worry; just go on as you are doing." He said: "It's all wrong, [but it can change]; go out and fight; change your life from top to bottom; go, and sin no more." Jesus confronts the bad life with the challenge of the good, [and so flings wide the doors of hope. By all this we see that] the amazing, heart-uplifting thing about Him was His belief in men and women. When He was confronted with someone who had gone wrong, He did not say: "You are a wretched and a hopeless creature." He said: "Go, and sin no more." He believed that with His help the sinner has it in him to become the saint. His method was not to blast men with the knowledge-- which they already possessed-- that they were miserable sinners, but to inspire them with the unglimpsed discovery that they were potential saints.

Constitutional amendments are extremely hard to pass in the US, for understandable reasons. This is not going to go anywhere in a long, long time, if ever... and probably never will.

It was filed by Congressman Andy Ogles (R-TN).

Don’t let this slip by unnoticed. This is not just “one extra term”, it’s a warning shot. It’s a red flag. It’s an omen.
