i know it would've been difficult for them to tackle, but it absolutely kills me thinking about the missed opportunities of getting into religious angle of everything that's going on in veilguard.
because it's insane, right? that there are gods in this game. and the game will tell you over and over that they aren't gods, that they're Just Mages, but that's actually not precisely true. they're something very different from what a tevinter magister is, at least, and not only on a power-scale.
powerful spirits are gods in this setting. that was the religion ascribed to by most of humanity, before andraste. the avvar and chasind still ascribe to that belief.
a lot has been said already about how the game fails to engage with belief for dalish characters, and i agree. i think the game also really fails its andrastian characters here though because this is actually huge.
it's not just whether the golden/black city is/was the seat of the maker. it's the very meaning of what god is that's at stake here.
the maker has abandoned humanity. only through the pleas of his prophet andraste is he willing to consider the idea of offering a second chance to his creation. he will not respond to your prayers, and he will not give you answers. his will is inscrutable, to be interpreted only through the words of his prophet which have been changed over the centuries.
and if you are a mage, you are taught that this maker has cursed you. your very being is a curse.
and then you meet elgar'nan. and then you meet ghilan'nain.
they are not your maker. not really. not even if you're an elf.
but these gods are knowable. they will speak to you, personally. they may even do so with kindness. they will tell you what you could do to please them, and even offer you something in return.
and what they ask is terrible. maybe even unfathomable. but in a world where exalted marches have been called in the name of the maker and entire circles annulled, isn't that enough to give you a little pause?
#da4 spoilers#veilguard spoilers#datv spoilers#sorry! feeling a little crazy about it after seeing that post about elgar'nan's faction specific comments#i get that they were never going to go here bc they've made a game where rook can't be tempted/waver even slightly#but man. Man.#that tiny taste of religious crisis that we got with the mural convos is constantly on my mind#there is so much to grapple with here with the very idea of the divine for a character of any religious belief#there is even something here for a dwarf without stone-sense!#your gods are dead because of them. they Killed your gods.#but there is no bringing them back either!#they are cruel and they are evil. but what if they could restore a fraction of what you have lost? what would you do if they offered?

Going fucking feral over the technicality that if someone where to use the Scroll of True Resurrection on Astarion, he should no longer be a vampire spawn.
Technically, if Karlach dies and you take the infernal engine out of her chest (or straight up destroy the body), then True Resurrection will heal her too and I just-
please just give them happy endings I beg of you

I'm gonna be real, so little of previous games have actually mattered in any way beyond flavor text that I literally could not give less of a shit about this whole debacle. Like it's such a non-issue to me. Idk what games y'all have been playing for 15 years but truly this is the norm. Barely anything carried over from Origins to Hawke and all pretty minor shit, and I genuinely cannot think of anything beyond flavor text carrying over to Inquisition. Oh you could customize Hawke and they can answer a few vague questions with vague bullshit? Cool, presumably that's what the Inquisitor will give us. Like idk guys but I think maybe building up your expectations for a decade has had a detrimental effect on what should be reasonable expectations for a video game that's truly been in development hell for like eight years and wants to be functionably playable to brand new players without alienating them.
#like i played inquisition first and THEN played the first two and i didn't really lose anything doing it like that#it functioned as a fun game in a bubble that parcelled background info in small digestible codex snippets#then after playing the other games there was more IMPACT in new playthrough but no major revelations#honestly i think i probably had MORE fun playing Inquisition first that i would have if i'd played origins and hawke beforehand#presumably that's what they're aiming for with veilguard and honestly i'm super chill with that#i hope they once again succeeded in making both a good bubble video game AND reasonable sequel#like they set it a decade later for a reason guys: i'm pretty sure most major inquisition decisions will be old news by then#'oh a shitty mage/assassin/cop is the divine? she has been for like twelve years get over it grandpa'#'oh the circles are restored/abolished? yeah we know little timmy the mage was born AFTER the mage revolt of :41 and is doing fine'#'hey what happened with all those wardens fucking about in orlais during the breach crisis? literally who gives a fuck that was AGES ago'#look. i just cannot comprehend getting genuinely bent out of shape about this. like are you also still made about origins' epilogue slides?#dragon age: the veilguard#by apples

the confusion of the staff of asklepios and the caduceus of hermes. asklepios who reigns over medicine and healing. hermes who reigns over trickery and commerce. asklepios who resurrected the dead. hermes who guides the dead to the underworld
#these comparisons. so many of them could be used as allegories for the modern state of medicine#medicine as something fundamental and as something commerical#profit for the one and for the many#ohh and beyond humanity the divine nature of healing of restoration#the nature of all beings to want to live#to fend off death#soup thoughts

Every time I start any new rpg there's always this moment of realization that the dragon age wiki has me absolutely SPOILED
#literally 0 information for the things i want to knowanywhere#i have to resort to reddit. REDDIT#and even then im not clear#ok so trickster CAN be chaotic good - but are there dialogue options that force you more into chaotic neutral?#I NEED TO KNOW#im trying to pick one in advance and im in-between this and azata#trickster i think fits elluin's vibe Perfectly but the alignment thing is holding me back#azata is dead on the best alignment wise and i like the environment restoration aspect but i don't like the divine aspect AT ALL#not gonna lie half my delisdain is because i saw fairy wings on the art and was like! fey? FEY?? But no its another fuckin divine variant#so yeah i don't know#elluins like. hes more chaotic than he is good#but he's more good than he is not#if that makes sense#im not willing to change his alignment#i mean in any case ill probably test the second option in a different play through but i wanna try and get as spot on a first run as i can#anyway#riv finds the path that sure is wrathfully righteous

The Terrible Visitation
1 Blow a trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm on My holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, For the day of the Lord is coming; Indeed, it is near,
2 A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness. As dawn is spread over the mountains, So there is a great and mighty people; There has never been anything like it, Nor will there be again after it To the years of many generations.
3 A fire consumes before them, And behind them a flame devours. The land is like the Garden of Eden before them, But a desolate wilderness behind them, And nothing at all escapes them.
4 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses; And like war horses, so they run.
5 With a noise as of chariots They leap about on the tops of the mountains, Like the crackling of a flame of fire consuming the stubble, Like a mighty people drawn up for battle.
6 Before them the people are in anguish; All faces turn pale.
7 They run like warriors, They climb the wall like soldiers; And each of them marches in line, Nor do they lose their way.
8 They do not crowd each other, Every warrior of them marches in his path; When they burst through the defenses, They do not break ranks.
9 They storm the city, They run on the wall; They climb into the houses, They enter through the windows like a thief.
10 Before them the earth quakes, The heavens tremble, The sun and the moon become dark, And the stars lose their brightness.
11 The Lord utters His voice before His army; His camp is indeed very great, For mighty is one who carries out His word. The day of the Lord is indeed great and very awesome, And who can endure it?
12 “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “Return to Me with all your heart, And with fasting, weeping, and mourning;
13 And tear your heart and not merely your garments.” Now return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and compassionate, Slow to anger, abounding in mercy And relenting of catastrophe.
14 Who knows, He might turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him, Resulting in a grain offering and a drink offering For the Lord your God.
15 Blow a trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly,
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and the nursing infants. Have the groom come out of his room And the bride out of her bridal chamber.
17 Let the priests, the Lord’s ministers, Weep between the porch and the altar, And let them say, “Spare Your people, Lord, And do not make Your inheritance a disgrace, With the nations jeering at them. Why should those among the peoples say, ‘Where is their God?’”
Deliverance Promised
Then the Lord will be zealous for His land, And will have compassion for His people.
19 The Lord will answer and say to His people, “Behold, I am going to send you grain, new wine, and oil, And you will be satisfied in full with them; And I will never again make you a disgrace among the nations.
20 But I will remove the northern army far from you, And I will drive it into a dry and desolate land, Its advance guard into the eastern sea, And its rear guard into the western sea. And its stench will ascend and its odor of decay will come up, Because it has done great things.”
21 Do not fear, land; shout for joy and rejoice, For the Lord has done great things.
22 Do not fear, animals of the field, For the pastures of the wilderness have turned green, For the tree has produced its fruit, The fig tree and the vine have yielded in full.
23 So shout for joy, you sons of Zion, And rejoice in the Lord your God; For He has given you the early rain for your vindication. And He has brought down for you the rain, The early and latter rain as before.
24 The threshing floors will be full of grain, And the vats will overflow with the new wine and oil.
25 “Then I will compensate you for the years That the swarming locust has eaten, The creeping locust, the stripping locust, and the gnawing locust— My great army which I sent among you.
26 You will have plenty to eat and be satisfied, And you will praise the name of the Lord your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; Then My people will never be put to shame.
27 So you will know that I am in the midst of Israel, And that I am the Lord your God And there is no other; And My people will never be put to shame.
The Promise of the Spirit
28 “It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters will prophesy, Your old men will have dreams, Your young men will see visions.
29 And even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
The Day of the Lord
30 I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire, and columns of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
32 And it will come about that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Will be saved; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, Just as the Lord has said, Even among the survivors whom the Lord calls. — Joel 2 | New American Standard Bible (NASB) New American Standard Bible®, Copyright © 1960, 1971, 1977, 1995, 2020 by The Lockman Foundation.
