Dissociation Station

In the station of detachment, I stand, A passenger lost in the vast expanse of no man's land. The platform echoes with the silence of my mind, As the train of thoughts leaves reality behind.

Faces pass like fleeting shadows in the mist, In this station of dissociation, where time does not exist. The ticket to presence lost, misplaced, In the corridors of numbness, I wander, spaced.

Each platform a realm of fragmented dreams, Reality dissolves in elusive streams. The announcement speakers murmur in disarray, As I navigate the labyrinth where thoughts decay.

Trains of emotion thunder through, unheard, In this station of detachment, where feelings are blurred. The timetable of self, a puzzle unsolved, As the echoes of existence remain unresolved.

No destination, no arrival, only departure, In this dissociation station, a silent departure. A one-way ticket to a realm unknown, Where the self journeys, suspended and alone.

Faces blend into a canvas of anonymity, In this station of dissociation, a surreal symphony. The whistle of the train, a distant cry, As I linger in the echoes, wondering why.

Hey Neotag!

I figured I'd do an introduction because why not I just got off work and had a lot of coffee and Klonopin (prescribed!!!). My name is Theo n I'm like 26 days away from being 19 but when I was like 4 I stole a red shoyru plushie from one of my babysitter's children before I even knew what neopets was (hence the URL).

I started playing when I was like 7 maybe and I played it obsessively but stopped playing after a bit and I think my old account got deleted for inactivity because I can't get back into it but W/E I made a new one like 3 months ago and have been playing like I'm 7 except with a lot more minmaxing (have desktop timers for EVERYTHING).

Anyway, my username is dissociationstation (I made it as a joke when drunk with my gf and got sucked in dhdhdsjsjskcbjaka) and I'm obligated to let you know that my wonderful gf has a good blog (july9th2014) go look at it and follow her if you want and she'll interrogate me as to why a bunch of neopets blogs are now following her :)

P.S. If you're really still reading this you're my kinda person, my "main" blog is @my-girlfriend-loves-me but I follow from @angstversteuring. And of course here I (re)post the quality neopets content you're looking for and I've made exactly one (1) neopets post myself that got a surprising amount of notes cause y'all just reblog anything neo related huh.

Dissociation, a 200-word RPG

Last month I posted a link to the 200-word RPG challenge, and I took a stab at compressing one of my own ideas into that same format. I’ve continued working on the concept in the meantime, adding and cutting as space would allow, and I’m pretty pleased with what I’ve created. You can see Dissociation version 2 across the break.

DISSOCIATION

Steal the premise, setting, and/or antagonist(s) from a cosmic horror story of your choice. Have the other players each create a character for the story by picking a name (e.g., Delapore, Marsh, Pickman, Tillinghast), a personality (e.g., curious, cynical, pompous, weird), and field of expertise (e.g., academia, investigations, medicine, occult).

Write out the numbers 1 through 20. Cross out 1 through 6 and circle 15 through 20.

Any time that the players try something risky or try to discover more about the mystery, roll 1d20. Roll two and use the higher result if the character’s expertise is relevant. If the resulting number is...

Crossed out: They achieve nothing. Complicate their situation. Cross out the lowest uncrossed number.

Unmarked: They make progress, but at a cost.

Circled number: They succeed beyond expectations. Make them regret it by revealing a horrifying truth. Circle the highest uncircled number. 

Both circled and crossed out: Their destruction leaves no trace; the story is over.

Every time the dice are rolled, mark a tally. If a character consults their notes and the players erase 6 tallies, they can ask the GM any question and receive a true answer.

In terms of mechanics, there are three noteworthy changes:

One, I dropped the Lovecraft pastiche story-starter in favour of my preferred method for improvising an adventure. This should give the game a lot more variety and longevity, I think. 

Two, I added some suggestions and more structure to the player’s character creation, which I hope will combat the frequent “blank canvas” problem. 

Three, I added a mechanism for the players to make inquiries of the GM, which I’ve seen work quite well in Lasers & Feelings. Originally, this was going to be part of a “retirement” mechanic, where characters could quit before they faced oblivion, but pass on their notes to a new generation (who would have a reset number line). I intended retirement as an homage to the frequent instances of heredity in Lovecraft’s stories, but I decided that it was both awkward as hell, and that I didn’t like the way heredity in Lovecraft’s stuff was always being used to push themes of racism and miscegenation – so that part didn’t make the cut. 

The biggest change, I would argue, is actually the presentation: this version contains absolutely no information about the basic procedure of play except for the dice mechanic, and it’s missing a lot of the “GM coaching” text that was in the original. If you’re an RPG neophyte, it’s basically unplayable. This version’s text is also a lot less flavourful and evocative of the desired tone, but I guess I’d call that an acceptable loss – as long as the system is stronger in practice.  

What do you think? Is it an improvement, or a step in the wrong direction? Which version would you rather play with?

Chakras or concepts similar to them aren’t just associated with one culture. They have many names and conceptualizations. Learning about how they may be seen from various viewpoints around the world allows us to develop our own perspective on body alignments.

thats actually rlly intriguing! where then, does the name in itself come from?

also to be fair i was mostly arguing for the idea than the specific example of chakras themselves. like im saying more that their moral viewpoint is faulty rather than the chakras themselves bc i cant even begin to act like i know enough about them specifically to say concretely? maybe i didnt convey that well enough. im rlly bad at conveying my ideas 99% of the time. but now im curious!
