A City Cruise of Cocktails - Flavour Blaster
Five Intoxicating Cocktail Bars in Five Minutes
This is your five minute guide to five great cocktail bars in the world’s best cities.
If you’re the kind of person who hops around on a plane with little time to research the local hotspots, this is the guide for you. If you’re heading for a stopover or stay in France, Mexico, Italy, Lebanon or Rio, you need a quick sundowner and tasty treat, we’ve got your back.
1. Paris
Little Red Door
Find the red door in the delightful, central Paris district of Marais to enter into the cosy yet cosmopolitan Little Red Door. Little Red Door pushes the cocktail menu envelope, reinventing communication, design, style and taste. Their latest menu, Flourish, builds on the bar's overarching concept of 'playfully pushing boundaries.' It is all about farm-to-glass using sustainable, eco-friendly flavour wizardry to create new cocktails. They don't take reservations, simply go and give the Little Red Door a knock.
Must Try Cocktail: Hops
Refreshing and drinkable, their house-made soda features the elegant and delicate bitterness of hops. It’s then combined with Floc de Gascogne and Roger Groult cider brandy for those looking for floral, fresh, and green notes in a sparkling and subtly sour cocktail.
2. Mexico City
LicoreríaLimantour
LicoreríaLimantour is a Mexico City institution. Named The Best Bar in North America for the second consecutive year and Rémy Martin Legend of The List in 2022 (50 Best Bars), it is both a hyper-local and international superstar. It's busy every day of the week, the staff are friendly, efficient and well trained, their drinks are to-die-for, and the atmosphere is nothing short of intoxicating. It's the kind of place that gets everything right.
Must Try Cocktail: Margarita al Pastor
A Margarita made from tequila blanco, orange liqueur, house-made taco mix (mint, basil, chilli, agave and pineapple juice), lime juice, and coriander salt. The Margarita al Pastor is a take on tacos al pastor, traditionally served with roast pineapple and fresh coriander/cilantro that is now a modern classic in its own right.
3. Rome
Drink Kong
Not your average Via Veneto Dolce Vita Rome hotspot, Drink Kong is a 70s futurism, King Kong and Japanese-influenced nightclub-dark, neon-lit bar set between the Stazione Termini and the Colosseum. This hopelessly hip cocktail bar has some serious cocktail chops, though. Their new menu, Perimetro, launched in 2022, uses mood and instinct to create taste profiles and their Japanese bar has visiting cocktail royalty for intimate tastings.
Must Try Cocktail: Ryuzo
The Ryuzo is an exotic whiskey drink inspired by the excellent Godfather cocktail. It's a beautiful blend of Aberfeldy 12 yo Scotch and Disaronno Amaretto with house-made pineapple and date cordial.
4. Rio
Liz Cocktail & Co
Expect high-quality food as well as a quintessential cocktail list at this Parisian Brasserie-style restaurant in the centre of Rio. Order oysters on the half shell with the house smoked chilli sauce, and choose from any of the exquisite cocktails twisted from 1920's style European classics, American Tiki cocktails and the all-important national drink, the Caipirinha.
Must Try Cocktail: Between the Tropics
A blend of golden rum and local cachaça with pineapple, lime and the retro Tiki cocktail syrup Fassionola.
5. Beirut
Anise
You'll have tried Italian sambuca, Greek ouzo, Turkish raki, Swiss absinthe or French pastis, but how about Lebanon's national drink, the aniseed-based arak? Arak precedes them all. Those who know their distilling history will know it is from Arabic that we get the word 'alembic' from 'al ambic' and 'alcohol' from ‘al cohol’ and that arak evolved from the Arab invention of alembic distillation in the 12th century.
If you're in the market to learn more about Lebanon's national drink, Anise is the place to go. There are also classic cocktails available if you decide that anise is not for you, and the music is worth a trip in itself. It's warm, friendly, and authentic; "a mash-up between a speakeasy and your grandmother's living room" - The New York Post.
Must Try Cocktail: Anise Bar's House Arak
Served traditionally, with 1/3 Arak and 2/3s water, with fresh ice. And if anise is not your gig, order a Vieux Carré instead.
If you know you want a Flavour Blaster cocktail then head to our 'Find a Bar’ map and get searching!

✨👀🔮🍺? 😊
✨ Favorite aesthetic?
Well, my fave at the moment is the “California Aesthetic” (if we can call it like that) with palm trees, beach waves, sand, foliage and wild flowers. 🌴 But I also love the “Academia Aesthetic” with old castles with dark wood interns, large colored panes (preferably in gothic style), velvet red sofas and big libraries with old books with leather covers 🏰
👀Celebrity crush?
I have many! But at the moment, Henry Cavill 💜😻
🔮Any advice you would have given 10 y/o you?
10y old me was even crazier and naive than me now, so I’d probably tell myself to let go of the people who I was friends with whom I used to spend time with because I liked them even though I knew in my guts the feeling wasn’t mutual. And as a child, I held on to anyone who would acknowledge me (since I was one of a kind)
🍺Favourite drink?
Non alcoholic drink: coffee for sure. Alcholic drink: I love the Disaronno amaretto liquor with Cola or orange juice in it because it has a 🥴 effect when you drink it (but for a few seconds lmao, thanks to the fact that Cola and OJ are a bit bubbly)
Thank you Lina! 💜🌼

Tortoni
20 servings
This is a dessert that was created by an Italian ice cream maker whose name happens to be Tortoni. He moved to Paris and had an ice cream café that existed for about 100 years until it was struck in a lightning storm and burned to the ground. A tortoni traditionally includes eggs but since they are used raw they are not included in this recipe.
Ingredients
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened, condensed milk
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 tablespoon Amaretto liqueur (optional) like Disaronno
1 cup Amaretti cookie crumbs (or use vanilla wafers)
1/3 cup Maraschino cherries, finely chopped
2 cups heavy or whipping cream, whipped
Foil baking cups (white paper lining discarded)
for garnish:
½ cup slivered almonds, toasted and finely chopped
10 Maraschino cherries cut in half
Directions:
Stir condensed milk and lemon juice in a bowl until well mixed. Stir in the almond extract, Amaretto, amaretti cookie crumbs, and chopped cherries. Beat the whipping cream in a mixing bowl until stiff. Fold the whipping cream into the milk mixture and blend well.
Scoop the mixture into the foil cupcake liners that have been placed in a cupcake pan. Sprinkle the chopped almonds on top and then place a cherry half on top. Place in the freezer overnight or until ready to serve. This makes a great company dessert but you don’t have to wait until you have company to make and eat them!
Notes:
Amaretti cookies are sold in the international section of larger grocery stores. However, if you can’t find them you can substitute vanilla wafers.
Tortonis taste like ice cream blended with rich ingredients. Some Italian restaurants offer them for dessert.
Adjust the recipe to your own tastes if you prefer.

Destiel + 21 please?
So this is actually the third (?) iteration of this prompt. I didn’t like either of the previous versions and then I went out for drinks with a friend and this idea emerged from that. I hope you like it!
Jealous Kiss:
“Hey there handsome, can I get you anything special?”
It’s the weekend before valentine’s day, and the cocktail bar is dimly lit and full of small groups and couples enjoying an evening out. It’s not really Dean’s sort of place, with its plush booths and artsy lighting and stylish bar, but Cas has been dying to try it out and Dean couldn’t face saying no. There isn’t currently a queue at the bar, given how early it still is, and Cas is now leaning against it, chatting to a young man in a fitted, black staff shirt.
“Oh, I’m not sure, I haven’t look at the menu yet,” replies Cas, to the barman’s sweet tones, picking up the smart looking menu booklet and starting to thumb through it.
“Not a problem,” the barman answers, his tone making Dean’s skin crawl. “What sort of thing do you like?” He’s got blonde hair, that’s been swept into some sort of fancy ass style and an easy, flirty smile and all of that would be fine, if he didn’t look like he wanted to eat Castiel alive. Not that Cas has noticed, he’s adorably oblivious. Instead he’s smiling sweetly and openly, utterly captivated by the man’s careful attention. He probably thinks the guy is just being friendly. Too friendly in Dean’s opinion.
The barman’s name tag reads Niall. Dean vows instant death and destruction to him.
Nobody makes a move on Dean Winchester’s boyfriend.
“Well, I like vodka based drinks,” Cas says, pausing to look a Niall’s carefully fashioned smile.
“How about Baileys?” Niall asks, leaning across the bar and flashing stupidly white teeth.
“Oh, yes. That’s nice too.”
“Hmmm, and what about something creamy?” Niall adds, definitely giving Cas the once over as he adds, “you look like the sort of person who like sweet, creamy drinks.”
Cas blushes. Dean swears internally. He’s being utterly cut out here by some irritating twinky barboy.
“That sounds delicious.”
“Perfect, I’ve got just the thing for you!” With a wink, Niall starts pulling bottles down and begins mixing things in a silver cocktail shaker. He chats easily with Cas, who starts telling him about the Italian place they went for dinner and about how delicious the food was.
“That’s the Italian place just round the corner right? Sexy Mama?”
“Yes, the gnocchi was divine as were the profiteroles I had for dessert,” Castiel smiles, turning to look at Dean as if to encourage him into the conversation. “Don’t you think so Dean?”
“It was pretty good,” Dean adds, not really thinking but more planning the destruction of Niall, who turns to look at Dean for the first time, giving him an appraising look. Dean draws himself up to his full height and goes to put a hand in the small of Castiel’s back. Only his boyfriend has moved slightly down the bar, where the accursed Niall is now pouring out his drink.
He slides the thick, creamy looking drink across the bar and leans in close to Castiel. “This is a Screaming Orgasm,” he says, soft and seductive, clearly pulling his best moves out of the bag. Cas blushes again. “Taste it for me? I want to know what you think.”
Cas takes a sip through the straw, closing his eyes as he swallows, a tiny moan of happiness escaping his lips. “That’s delicious.”
“I thought you’d like it,” Niall says. “They’re my speciality. Let me know if I can get you another one. Or maybe, a real one.” He adds a final wink as Dean steps up to the bar.
“If you’re quite finished, I’d like a whiskey sour,” he snaps, noting the eye roll from barboy. “Why don’t you go find us a booth,” he adds, turning to Cas with a soft smile, “I’ll pay for these.”
Once he gets his drink, from a much sulkier Niall, he joins Cas in a plush booth on the other side of the room. The seats are soft and offer a perfect view of the bar, plus with the added bonus of being able to snuggle in right next to his boyfriend.
Dean slides up to Cas, putting an arm around his waist and pulling him close. Cas, however, doesn’t seem particularly impressed – rolling his eyes and shooting Dean a look that suggests Dean is in trouble. He’s not quite sure why though.
“Why were you so rude to the barman? He was just being friendly,” Cas asks, a cold edge to his tone as he sips the drink Niall made him.
“Cas, he wasn’t being friendly, he was flirting with you. A lot.”
“No he wasn’t, he just asked what drink I wanted, helped me choose one, asked about dinner, gave me a screaming…” Cas’s voice trails off and he does the mental maths, and even under the low lights Dean can see an adorable flush spreading across his face.
“Oh,” Cas puts the drink down, pushing it away and looking down at his hands. “I’m sorry.”
Dean smiles, lifting Cas’s face up and looking deep into his beautiful blue eyes. “Don’t be sorry, not your fault he’s a dick.” He leans in close, a little smirk on his lips. “Not your fault your so goddamn gorgeous.”
“Not my fault either, that my boyfriend gets jealous,” Cas smirks, tapping Dean on the nose like a cat.
“Hey! I’m not jealous!” Cas rolls his eyes again, and Dean grins. “Well… maybe just a little.” He leans in and pulls Cas into a fierce kiss. He can taste the creamy tang of Baileys and Kahlua on Cas’s tongue as he pushes inside his boyfriend’s mouth, feeling Cas practically melt in his arms as Dean kisses him over and over.
When the pull apart, they’re practically panting, and Dean has to admit his pants are a little tighter than they should be for so public a venue. It’s worth it though when he looks over at the bar and spots Niall fuming.
Dean shoots him a wink and pulls Cas in for another kiss. (Author’s Note: Yes a ‘Screaming Orgasm’ is a real cocktail. It’s made with vodka,Baileys, Disaronno, Kahlua and cream)

IL VIAGGIO ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The latest stop on my virtual trip around the bars that have long been on my 'must visit list' takes me to The Duchess in Amsterdam. 329 miles from home and a 6 hour drive, one of Amsterdam's grandest bars is the stop that would be the easiest for me to get to in normal times. Though the lockdown in the UK has been eased slightly, international leisure travel is still not possible. As such my virtual trip to Amsterdam was only a couple of jiggers and and shake away.🇳🇱 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ First opened at the end of 2015, the Duchess bar has appealed to me due to the promise of the grand European cafe style atmosphere...but with cocktails and top shelf spirits as well as coffee. Currently couped up in a small appartment for the last ten weeks, the thought of large open-plan bars appeals massively.🇳🇱 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Looking through a number of articles and tje current menu I found several drinks that have been served at the Duchess, and all that I tried were thoroughly enjoyable - with the Roman Holiday, Pistachio Sour and Cuban Buckeye a few of my favourites. The one I have found myself remixing the most, however is the Il Viaggio. Partly because of its beautiful simplicity but also the fact that the name translates to 'I Travel', really does strike a chord with my unfulfilled wanderlust at the moment.🇳🇱 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The drink was created by Wouter Bosch in May 2016 while Bartender at The Duchess for Disaronno Mixing Stars. I found a spec for the drink on @DiffordsGuide, which made for an excellent drink to accompany dessert. As I love an Italian style digestif after a hearty meal, I have upped the amaro and bitters to balance it more to my tastes so that I can take a cheeky second or third instead of a dessert. Bosh now heads up the team at Rosalia's Menagerie, which specialises in closed loop drinks. I look forward to visiting both bars soon.🇳🇱 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ IL VIAGGIO ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🥃40 ml rabarbaro 🥃40 ml disarono 🥃5 dashes Peychaud's bitters ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Stir and serve over ice with a twist of orange. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cheers (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAmyc0BFxQV/?igshid=1oee7l47jsiwb

Student Blogger: Adventures in Austria
MaryJo Pittman is studying abroad on a Summer exchange at Management Center Innsbruck in Innsbruck, Austria.
It’s been about three weeks since returning home from Innsbruck and it feels as if I was never really there. I really have been wondering to myself… was it all a dream? It’s amazing how time slips away from you and the days just kind of blur together and then before you know it, you’re left with only memories that you desperately try and salvage and keep fresh to remind yourself that those days actually existed. That’s exactly how I’m feeling now when I reflect on my month abroad because it’s already been three weeks since my trip and I feel like I’m trying to piece together parts of a dream that I’m not certain actually happened… but in fact, it did and despite these weird feelings of nostalgia, I know I will never forget my time abroad and the memories will last a lifetime.
I hadn’t actually decided where I wanted to go during the third week of my program that I had open since I didn’t know if I would go by myself or tag along with a group. But after becoming friends with a couple girls in the program who also had the week free, we spontaneously planned a trip in Italy – honestly, Italy was never even on my mind as a possible travel destination, but I’m so glad we went because some of the best memories of the trip were from Italy. From the flowery air, marble sidewalks, and carbonara pizza in Verona – to getting horribly sunburnt and drinking prosecco at the boat party in Lago di Garda – to gondolas and aperol spritzers in Venice … Italy was absolutely incredible and I totally want to go back!
We then returned from Italy and began our fourth and final week in Innsbruck with my very last undergraduate college class – Intro to International Business. Of course my last class would turn out to be a more difficult one where I had zero prior knowledge beforehand. But the professor was a kind man from the South with a remarkable work history who made the class enjoyable and unforgettable as I gave my last presentation on the differences between Hershey’s and German Milka chocolate (Milka is so much better I’m craving some right now).
During the last week I also finally got to do what I was most excited about during the trip – climbing! I had made friends with a local who had ample experience in climbing in the area and offered to take me for a climb up in the mountains. It was really interesting comparing the climbing atmosphere there to what I’ve always been used to and taught in the U.S. The way I was taught was to be very communicative with your climbing partner and always make sure the two of you are aware of what the other is doing – communication is highly enforced and encouraged. But what I observed while climbing in Austria was the opposite – all the other climbers were so much more reserved and I hardly heard anyone speak to their partners. But I suppose it makes sense because the Austrian German culture is very reserved. Locals keep to themselves and workers come across as unapproachable at times. So I found it very interesting to compare what I observed there to what I am so conditioned to knowing in the U.S. In fact, I felt almost out of place and weird climbing there because I wanted to yell out commands and encourage my climbing partner, but no one else was doing that so I just tried to conform to the other climbers. But still, I was able to cross a very important item off my bucket list and I can now say I have climbed in another country!
On my last day in Innsbruck, I said goodbye to the cute Old Town and got on the train to Munich where I spent my last weekend before catching my flight back home. Spending time in Munich was wonderful as I had my own hotel room each night, enjoyed a bus tour of the city, ate disaronno chocolate crepes, and had an unforgettable time on my bier garten tour where I consumed giant Bavarian pretzels. And finally, after a terribly stressful and long day with many tears at the airport and sprinting to make connecting flights, I was greeted at close to midnight by my wonderful fiancé who took me home. And so, life resumed to normal again as I returned to work and reunited with friends and family, and here I am now replaying in my head the magical, stressful, amazing, dream of Europe.
