I absolutely adore DirkJake, but I am also such a fan of JohnDirk.

Like I love fics where Dirk and Dave live together and Dirk starts to get feelings for this weird nerdy guy who sits in his living room with Dave sumx but he’s also like “shit he’s my brothers best friend I’d be such a scumbag”. But I ALSO love how the two are sort of inverses with their emotional experiences - John is a seemingly upbeat, carefree guy. But that’s to hide the hollowness he feels inside, seeming to hope that, if he acts okay, it’ll be true eventually, or at least his friends will believe it. On the flipside, though, there’s Dirk, who seems to be an emotionless, self absorbed guy, but that’s all an act because he’s terrified of showing his friends he’s anything less than the ideal man, because his idea of “acting okay” and John’s idea of “acting okay” are two totally oppositional things. And Dirk feels that, if he shoves his feelings out of reach, they will go away and he’ll be more of an asset. And I really like fics where the “looks happy, actually sad” and “looks sad, actually happy” help eachother cope with the lows of depression and trauma.
