Meanwhile many places I've lived have things that are spelled normally. Or in recognisable languages that we study in school. And are pronounced abominably.
having to tap the "if an australian place name sounds strange to you please google it and make sure you're not just mocking indigenous languages" sign again

Happy movie trailer day! In the meantime I'm making myself busy translating the second movie, and because I have a stupid amount of notes about that scene introducing the special Kisanta rescue team (the kids who didn't complete their homework), I thought I'd share them here. It's a bit long, so it's under the cut!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"1st year ha-class, Settsu no Kirimaru. Assigned with a book report. Planned to copy someone else’s homework. I was too busy working part time jobs!"
In the background there's a seigaiha wave pattern, which has been used since the Heian period, and so is well established already during Muromachi where Nintama takes place. Because of the unending motion of waves, it's an auspicious pattern that evokes resilience.
Then, there's of course the little coins Kirimaru loves so much ("kozeni!"). They are called eiraku-tsuho after the japanese reading of the characters 永樂通寳 on it, but back then they were commonly called eiraku-sen. They are copper coins worth 1 mon (the currency of the time) each, and they have a square hole in the middle so they can be tied to a string.
The text scrolling across the screen goes like this: 人も歩けば銭を拾う. "Even people can pick up coins if they keep walking." Looks like Kirimaru's own take on the japanese proverb "Even a dog can pick up a stick if it keeps walking.", meaning that good things are bound to happen if you keep going. 成るも成らぬも銭次第. "When there's money, there's a way." Literally "Success depends on money.", but is a spin on "when there's a will, there's a way". 銭は天下の落とし物 "Coins are what heavens dropped and left behind", literally. So something like "Coins fell from heavens' pocket." If it's a spin on a proverb, I don't know about it, sorry!
Tumblr media
"1st year ha-class, Fukutomi Shinbei. Assigned with kanji exercises. Planned to copy someone else’s homework. Instead I ate a lot of yummy food!"
In the background are konpeitou, a type of candy introduced in Japan by Portuguese traders by the end of Muromachi.
At the time, it was an exotic and expensive product, but surely it's something Shinbei would be able to enjoy back at his family home in Sakai, whose port became a hub for foreign trade at the time due to Oda Nobunaga forming friendly relationships with the Portuguese (a missionary even gifted him konpeitou to earn his favors). So if there's one character who could afford konpeitou, it would probably be Shinbei! (I'm sure Tasogare Jinbei would love it too.)
The scrolling text reads: 地上の子の最大の幸福は満腹なれ "In a full belly lies a child of earth's chief happiness." Shinbei's own take on these verses part of Goethe's West-Eastern Divan: In sense of personal being lies A child of earth's chief happiness. 衣食足りて宿題忘るる "The poor can't afford homewowork." It comes from the japanese proverb "once fed and clothed, one learns manners", which I think in English would be "the poor can't afford manners". Literally translates to "Once fed and clothed, you forgeget about homework". Yes, Shinbei added an extra character, so the last word gets an extra vowel lol.
Tumblr media
"3rd year ro-class, Kanzaki Samon. Assigned with farm work practice. Somehow never found the way to the assigned farm. That was homework for a 2nd year? So stupid!"
Behind him are mah-jong tiles with the characters for the fourth cardinal points on them: 北 (north), 南 (south), 東 (east), 西 (west). Obviously relating to his sense of direction.
The text reads: 進退は疑うなかれ "Don't doubt your actions." 敵を見て謀るなかれ "Do not scheme just by watching the enemy." Sadly I don't know where these lines come from. 迷わず行けよ行けば判る "Just go without hesitation; if you go, you will understand." This is taken from a quote by pro-wrestler Antonio Inoki.
Tumblr media
"4th year i-class, Tairano Takiyashamaru. I tore the social science work I was given since it was for 1st years! I boast the best grades in my year, don’t make a fool of me!"
The rose frame evokes early shoujo manga, most notably The Rose of Versailles by Riyoko Ikeda, where roses are a recurring symbol in the story of the main characters' enduring beauty and dignity even in the hardest times. That idea of beauty, utsukushisa, is something Takiyashamaru mentions a lot, insisting on doing things beautifully always.
The scrolling text reads: 選ばれし者の恍惚と不満ふたつ我有り "I have both the ecstasy and displeasure of being the chosen one." Taken from Dazai Osamu's short story Leaves. 天才を天才たらしめるのは私の本能 My instinct makes me a genius among geniuses. His own take on a quote by Bob Dylan:  "I believe that instinct is what makes a genius a genius.". He made it about himself... classic Taki...
Tumblr media
"5th year ro-class, Fuwa Raizou. Got overwhelmed with apprehension over the science exercises aimed at 3rd years that I received. How come that homework is so easy?"
In the background are lined up onigawara. Oni is often translated as "ogre" or "demon", but originally the figure of the oni symbolizes everything that is out of human's power and influence, making them not necessarily malicious ; all events that amount to luck, fate, force of natures like earthquakes, storms, etc, Which is why you find onigawara, roof tiles made in the shape of oni, placed there in order to ward off evil and misfortune. Fuwa Raizou's name sounds similar to the yojijukugo (four kanji compound expression) 付和雷同 "fu wa rai dou" meaning "to follow others blindly". That's not very sympathetic towards ever hesitant Raizou, but the characters used to spell his name are different : 不(un-) 破(breakable) 雷(thunder) 蔵(warehouse, ownership) The unbreakable mind who puts thunder in a box, who made thunder his own. Under his indecisiveness there's a reliable senpai and protector, just like the onigawara!
Raizou has only one sentence scrolling across the screen:
お前の実力はこの程度ということなのだろうか "Could this be the extent of your ability?" I don't know if this refers to something else, the sentence being very... anime fight-speech like it makes it difficult to research haha.
Tumblr media
"You never change, Raizou. Gave up on homework to follow Raizou. 5th year ro-class, Hachiya Saburou."
I love this transition! His introduction mirrors Raizou: He comments first, gives his reason for not doing his homework second, and shares his name last. Excuse my sloppy edit in the picture above, I wanted to include all the mask in one picture. The striped background evokes a theater curtains, and all of Raizou's onigawara are swapped with masks from Noh theater - they all represent different characters, of different archetypes, gender, etc. Some are humans, some are spirits, some are good or evil... conveying of course Saburou's mastery of disguise! I tried to name all the masks on the picture above, but I'm really no expert so I might have made mistakes. Incidentally, Ayakashimaru from 1st year ro-class is named after the "Ayakashi" Noh mask. Although they aren't pictured here, there exist masks named Fushikizou, Heita, and Magojirou.
As for the scrolling text... take a deep breath everyone because it's a lot:
比翼の鳥 連理の枝一膳の箸 把手共行 碎啄同時 "Lovebirds flying together, intertwined branches of a tree, A pair of chopsticks, walking hand in hand, a chance opportunity."
There's.. a LOT going on here, yojijukugo and poetic imagery, so let's break it down:
比翼の鳥 連理の枝 hiyoko no tori, literally birds in flight, is an expression meaning "a happily married couple". renri no eda means intertwined branches, the "renri" part refering to trees growing to become cojointed. In Japanese, such trees are seen as an auspicious symbol of marriage, and "renri" is an expression to refer to an intimate relationship.
This specific imagery is found in the Chinese poem, the Song of Everlasting Regret, telling the story of star-crossed lovers:
“In the heavens, we vow to be as two birds flying wingtip to wingtip, On earth, we vow to be as two intertwined branches of a tree.”
一膳の箸 ichizen no hashi is literally "a pair of chopsticks".
把手共行 hashukyouko means "to go together, hand in hand".
碎啄同時 sottaku douji means an once in a life time chance, a golden opportunity. It evokes two people learning and working in sync, and in Buddhism, it refers to a teacher helping a disciple attain enlightenment.
Oh...Saburou...❤️
Tumblr media
"6th year ha-class, Zenpouji Isaku. Got an assignment for 4th years, “Steal the flag of the Tasogaredoki army”. But it didn’t count since I ripped the flag I got to make bandages out of it. It was in pieces, but I did bring back a whole flag…"
I'm not sure of what is in the background haha. The designs and the brown side remind me a lot of the matchboxes sold in the Taisho era and until mid Showa. They're known by the word for "matchbox label", 燐票, rinpyou. These matchboxes were used for advertising, notably by drugstores for selling medicine. This is at least what the designs of the boxes on the screenshot reminds me of, especially the blue Junko (the snake being associated with traditional medicine too).
The text reads: ちちんぷいぷい いたいのいたいのむこうのおやまへとんでゆけ "There, there, ouchies fly away, to the mountain over there." The whole sentence is written in the easy to read, phonetic hiragana alphabet, to match the "baby speech" tone of the sentence. The first part, chichin puipui, is used as a "spell" by parents, nurses, etc to comfort small children in pain. Then, the ouchies are sent flying away with a motion of the hand to make them feel better.
That's it for today! I hope it wasn't too long to read! Thank you for reading this far! If you have extra info, please let me know!

Would you put Louis XIV as overrated?
Oof, that's a tough one.
It's particularly hard to answer because the reign of the Sun King also saw the tenure of some of the most influential chief ministers in French history: Mazarin, and Colbert.
Tumblr media
While perhaps not quite as famous as a certain cardinal whose schemes kept getting foiled by the Three Musketeers, these guys were world-historically important.
Mazarin was Richelieu's political heir, and brought his predecessor's policy of using the Thirty Years War as a way to break the back of Hapsburg dominance to a successful conclusion. The Peace of Westphalia not only served as the foundation for modern international relations, but also expanded France's position in Alsace and the Rhineland - especially when Mazarin pulled off an anti-Hapsburg alliance with the new League of the Rhine.
Tumblr media
At the same time that France was winning the Franco-Spanish War, which won them a big chunk of territory in the Low Countries around Artois, Luxembourg, and parts of Flanders, and all of the territory north of the Pyrenees Mountains including French Catalonia. It also got Louis XIV the hand of Maria Teresa, which would eventually create the catalyst for the War of Spanish Succession and the War of Austrian Succession...
And while Mazarin was doing all of this, he was also busy crushing the Fronde uprising led by le Grand Condé, which he eventually accomplished in 1653, and creating a formidble system of centralized royal government through the intendants that ended the power of the feudal nobility.
Tumblr media
As for Colbert, he was the guy who figured out how to pay for all of this. The single biggest reason why economists need to shut the fuck up when they talk about mercantilism, Colbert was the financial and economic genius of his age. Remember all those canals I'm so crazy about? Colbert built them. Specifically, he was responsible for the Canal des Deux Mers, transforming France's economy by linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic.
Tumblr media
He also turbo-charged France's economic development by restructing public debt to reduce interest payments and cracking down on tax farmers, reforming (although not ultimately solving) the taxation system of the Ancien Régime by using indirect taxes to get around tax evasion by the First and Second Estate, equalizing (but not ending) internal customs duties, and putting the power of the state into supporting French commerce and manufacturing. This included significant tariffs to support domestic producers, direct public investments into lace and silk manufacturing, and the creation of joint-stock corporations like the French East India Company. (This also meant Colbert's direct promotion of the slave trade and the Code Noir in order to generate hugely profitable investments in Haitian sugar and tobacco plantations for import into France and the rest of Europe.)
Tumblr media
This makes it a little difficult to separate out what credit belongs to these guys versus the guy who hired them. What I can say is that Louis was directly responsible for Versailles, but also for the revocation of the Edict of Nantes.

Adolf Hitler
Adolf Hitler
Adolf Hitler ( 20 April 1889 – 30 April 1945) was an Austrian-born German politician and the leader of the Nazi Party (German: Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP); National Socialist German Workers Party). He was chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945 and dictator of Nazi Germany (as Fhrer und Reichskanzler) from 1934 to 1945. Hitler was at the centre of Nazi Germany, World War II in Europe, and the Holocaust.
Hitler was a decorated veteran of World War I. He joined the German Workers' Party (precursor of the NSDAP) in 1919, and became leader of the NSDAP in 1921. In 1923, he attempted a coup in Munich to seize power. The failed coup resulted in Hitler's imprisonment, during which time he wrote his memoir, Mein Kampf (My Struggle). After his release in 1924, Hitler gained popular support by attacking the Treaty of Versailles and promoting Pan-Germanism, antisemitism, and anti-communism with charismatic oratory and Nazi propaganda. Hitler frequently denounced international capitalism and communism as being part of a Jewish conspiracy.
Hitler's Nazi Party became the largest elected party in the German Reichstag, leading to his appointment as chancellor in 1933. Following fresh elections won by his coalition, the Reichstag passed the Enabling Act, which began the process of transforming the Weimar Republic into the Third Reich, a single-party dictatorship based on the totalitarian and autocratic ideology of National Socialism. Hitler aimed to eliminate Jews from Germany and establish a New Order to counter what he saw as the injustice of the post-World War I international order dominated by Britain and France. His first six years in power resulted in rapid economic recovery from the Great Depression, the denunciation of restrictions imposed on Germany after World War I, and the annexation of territories that were home to millions of ethnic Germans, actions which gave him significant popular support.
Hitler actively sought Lebensraum ("living space") for the German people. His aggressive foreign policy is considered to be the primary cause of the outbreak of World War II in Europe. He directed large-scale rearmament and on 1 September 1939 invaded Poland, resulting in British and French declarations of war on Germany. In June 1941, Hitler ordered an invasion of the Soviet Union. By the end of 1941 German forces and their European allies occupied most of Europe and North Africa. Failure to defeat the Soviets and the entry of the United States into the war forced Germany onto the defensive and it suffered a series of escalating defeats. In the final days of the war, during the Battle of Berlin in 1945, Hitler married his long-time lover, Eva Braun. On 30 April 1945, less than two days later, the two committed suicide to avoid capture by the Red Army, and their corpses were burned. Under Hitler's leadership and racially motivated ideology, the regime was responsible for the genocide of at least 5.5 million Jews, and millions of other victims whom he and his followers deemed racially inferior.

The ruined abbey church
Vaux-de-Cernay Abbey (French: Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay) was a Cistercian monastery in northern France (Île-de-France), situated in Cernay-la-Ville, in the Diocese of Versailles, Yvelines.
The abbey was founded in 1118 when Simon de Neauffle and his wife Eve donated the land for this foundation to the monks of Savigny Abbey, in order to have a monastery built in honour of the Mother of God and Saint John the Baptist. Vital, Abbot of Savigny, accepted their offer, and sent a group of monks under the direction of Arnaud, who became their first abbot. Besides the founders, others of the nobility came to the aid of the new Savigniac community.

At least 18 people have been arrested after a wave of hoax bomb threats prompted evacuations across France.
The Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, as well as schools, airports and hospitals have all been targeted.
Those behind the disruption are mostly minors, authorities say.
The threats come at a time of heightened tension in France, after a teacher was fatally stabbed by an alleged jihadist last week at a school in the northern city of Arras.
Fifteen regional airports had threats made against them on Friday, from Biarritz, Bordeaux, Nice and Toulouse in the south to Lille and Brest in the north. Airports have been evacuated on several days this week, causing the cancellation of at least 130 flights.
Tourist sites have also been targeted. The Palace of Versailles was closed for the fifth time in a week on Friday after yet another threat, affecting thousands of visitors.
Mayor François de Mazières appealed for the "idiocy" to stop, telling Franceinfo that 10,000-15,000 people visited France's former royal residence every day and warned the hoaxes "could have consequences for attendance".
The Louvre in Paris was also forced to evacuate thousands of visitors last Saturday.
Twenty-two investigations have been launched, Justice Minister Éric Dupond-Moretti told RTL radio on Friday, but the arrests appeared to have no effect on the spate of scares.
France was placed on its highest state of counter-terrorism alert last week following the killing of 57-year-old teacher Dominique Bernard. The suspect, a former pupil at the Gambetta high school in Arras, is a Russian national of Chechen origin.
On Friday, a high school in Grenoble in the south-east was evacuated for the second time in two days, and students and staff were also forced to leave a high school in Bourg-en-Bresse in the east.
Earlier this week, pupils in one Toulouse school were told to go under their tables when a suspect package was spotted in front of the building.
Authorities have arrested several students they suspect of being behind the scares.
A 16-year-old was arrested on Thursday a few hours after his school in Val-d'Oise, north of Paris, was evacuated. Another student suspected of calling in a hoax threat was arrested a few hours after 1,200 pupils had to leave their school premises.
Macron attends teacher's funeral after Arras attack
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on Thursday night that 18 people, mainly minors, had been arrested in a space of 48 hours but he stressed that France was under no specific threat.
The threats have been made by phone or email, via a website launched in 2020 to text police officers direct, and by contacting official police social media accounts.
Mr Dupond-Moretti warned those he called "little jokers" that they would be "found and punished".
Authorities are using IP addresses and phone numbers to identify those responsible. Calling in a fake bomb threat is a crime in France that carries up to three years in prison and a €45,000 (£39,000) fine.

2 world war
WWII Causes, Events, Consequences
Default (GPT-3.5)
User 2world war 1000words
ChatGPT World War II, spanning from 1939 to 1945, was a global conflict of unparalleled scale and impact. It reshaped the course of history, leaving an indelible mark on the world. In this brief essay, I will attempt to encapsulate the key events, causes, consequences, and legacy of World War II in 1000 words.
Causes of World War II:
World War II was a direct outcome of the unresolved issues and tensions that lingered from World War I. The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, imposed harsh penalties on Germany, sowing the seeds of future conflict. Economic hardships and political instability in Europe further exacerbated the situation.
The Rise of Totalitarian Regimes:
In the 1930s, two aggressive and expansionist totalitarian regimes emerged – Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, and Imperial Japan, under Emperor Hirohito. They sought territorial expansion and dominance. Hitler's ambitions in Europe and Japan's invasion of China set the stage for war.
The Path to War:
In 1939, Germany's invasion of Poland triggered the war as Britain and France, honoring their commitments, declared war on Germany. This marked the beginning of a conflict that would eventually involve most of the world.
Major Players and Alliances:
The Axis Powers, led by Germany, Japan, and Italy, formed one side of the conflict. On the other side, the Allies included the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and numerous other nations.
Major Theaters of War:
World War II was a multi-front conflict. The major theaters included:
European Theater: The battlefront in Europe witnessed crucial events like the Battle of Stalingrad, D-Day, and the Holocaust. The Nazi regime's expansion was checked and ultimately defeated through joint efforts of the Allies.
Pacific Theater: Japan's aggressive expansion in the Pacific led to significant battles such as the Battle of Midway and the island-hopping campaign. The dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki forced Japan's surrender in 1945.
African and Middle Eastern Theater: Conflict extended to North Africa and the Middle East. The North African campaign and the Battle of El Alamein were pivotal.
Eastern Front: The Eastern Front saw brutal battles between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, with the tide turning at the Battle of Stalingrad, which had profound implications for the war's outcome.
Holocaust and Atrocities:
One of the most harrowing aspects of World War II was the Holocaust. The systematic genocide of six million Jews by the Nazis shocked the world. This monstrous act is a dark stain on human history, highlighting the depths to which hate and prejudice can lead.
Technology and Innovation:
World War II witnessed unprecedented technological advancements. Radar, jet engines, and the development of the atomic bomb are just a few examples of innovations that had lasting impacts on the post-war world.
Consequences of World War II:
The war's consequences were profound and far-reaching:
Destruction and Loss of Life: The scale of destruction and loss of life was immense, with an estimated 70-85 million casualties worldwide.
United Nations: In the aftermath of the war, the United Nations was established, aimed at promoting peace and cooperation among nations.
Superpower Rivalry: The war marked the beginning of the Cold War, with the United States and the Soviet Union emerging as superpowers, leading to decades of ideological and geopolitical rivalry.
Decolonization: The war accelerated the decolonization of Africa and Asia as colonial powers weakened.
Universal Declaration of Human Rights: The horrors of the war inspired the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, setting international standards for human rights.
Rebuilding Europe: The Marshall Plan and the reconstruction of Europe helped rebuild war-torn countries and lay the foundation for the European Union.
Nuclear Age: The use of atomic bombs in Japan ushered in the nuclear age, leading to fears of nuclear conflict during the Cold War.
Legacy:
World War II's legacy endures in various forms. It serves as a reminder of the catastrophic consequences of unchecked aggression and the importance of diplomacy and international cooperation. The war's impact on geopolitics, technology, and human rights continues to shape the world today.
In conclusion, World War II was a defining moment in history, marked by its unprecedented scale and devastating consequences. It emerged from complex causes, involved major global players, and reshaped the world in its aftermath. The war's legacy is a testament to the enduring importance of peace, diplomacy, and the protection of human rights in a world scarred by conflict and suffering.

After visiting St. Petersburg and its surroundings (Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo) I thought about how Alagadda would look like being in the Baroque style. And the Northern Capital (as the Russians call it) seemed very suitable to me.
Tumblr media
Why is it?
1. Historical appearance. St. Petersburg was founded in the 18th century, so most of the buildings date back to this period. Starting from the foundation and ending with the beginning of the Soviet system, St. Petersburg was the capital, and any major capital has a large number of palaces and large residences, which also affected the appearance of this city.
2. Location. The Northern Capital is located on the seashore, right at the mouth of the river. Of course, there are not as many channels in St. Petersburg as in Venice, but there are much more of them than in other European cities. Bridges in St. Petersburg are a separate topic and almost a business card of the city.
3. Architecture. As I have already said, there are a huge number of magnificent palaces, fantastic temples and exquisite bridges. Of course, the modern look of the center is different from the 18th century, but this entire architectural ensemble, even together with the buildings of the 19th century, creates an overall picture that is difficult to separate from each other — Baroque, Rococo, classicism and Empire look so harmoniously with each other.
Tumblr media
There is one more thing that is not touched upon in any way specified in the original document, but was in Venice itself. And these are villas and country residences. Starting from the 15th century, secular construction began to develop in Europe, in particular the palazzo (city palace) and a villa (country palace). The fashion for villas appeared in Venice in the 16th century: noble citizens began to leave for the mainland during the summer. However, the real sensation was made by Versailles — the most famous country palace of the 17th century, with a regular park and a whole complex of various buildings. Russia has decided to keep up with European fashion and since the 18th century country palaces have also appeared in the vicinity of St. Petersburg: Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo, etc. Peterhof is the quintessence of what Versailles once laid. A huge palace complex with dozens of different buildings, a huge regular park with a lot of beautiful fountains. However, the slightly more intimate Tsarskoye Selo impresses with its sophistication and quirkiness of architectural forms.
Tumblr media
Well, I hope you got to this point, because here I want to tell you about my thoughts.
The appearance and structure of the city:
Like the original Alaggada, a huge, resplendent city surrounded by black waters. Baroque is a style of excess, so here the structure of the city is different: there are wide avenues, huge squares with colossal obelisks and triumphal arches, extensive parks. As for the latter: unlike the original Alagadda, it is easy to find plants in the city, but they are not all alive: some are completely black and harder than metal, others consist entirely of precious metals and precious stones, and there are also ice-glass.
The city can be divided into five parts: there are four districts on the cardinal directions and one central one. The North belongs to the Black Lord: this is the main entrance from the sea. A large number of light shows and various lavish banquets are held here, as well as theaters give the best performances and concerts around the clock. The South belongs to the White Lord: its streets are covered with white snowdrifts of either doggie or snow. On the squares there are glass palaces and sculptures, white fortress towers, which are constantly demolished by dashing horsemen and horse-drawn covered wagons (Alagadda horses can look completely different, sometimes completely losing their resemblance to terrestrial animals). The East was occupied by the Red Lord: his possessions occupy part of the country forest, and also has access to the sea, so his part of the city is a real hunting ground. Gambling houses, brothels and various clubs are literally around every corner. The Western port belongs to the Yellow Lord: the eyes are blinded by the amount of gold, and the nose hurts from the amount of delicious flavors. Luxury here is so hyperbolized that you can go crazy from this abundance. The center is, oddly enough, a neutral territory: here you can find everything that is in other parts of the city, however, it is a cultural area - a haven for wand-bearers and seekers of knowledge. Museums and libraries, secret societies and chthonic cults — everything that is responsible for the vices of the soul, not the flesh, is here.
Tumblr media
But where is the King's palace then? And he is not quite in Alagadda itself. Although country residences belong to the city, however, they are in the distance and it is already more difficult to get into them. The Royal palace and Park ensemble is practically a separate city, but only purely for the courtiers of the King. The regular park impresses with the quirkiness of buildings and plant compositions, and the view from the palace is breathtaking: an alley of obsidian poplars, golden maples and ruby bushes goes far, far to the Black Sea. However, no ordinary guest will be able to reach the sea — the further he goes, the further the coast seems (some have never returned from this endless walk).
Tumblr media
There are still residences of various courtiers outside the city, but about them sometime later. I can only say that the White Lord's villa looks more like a huge greenhouse, the Red One has a large English park, the Yellow One's residence is famous for a huge water cascade, and the Black One has organized his own open-air theater.
Thanks for your attention!

U3 - The urban subway
After crossing the Ring it becomes quite obvious that I am now in the city center. The buildings are closer together and consistently multiple stories tall. So from Heidelberger Platz I continue north-west.
Tumblr media
[a calm side street in a residential neighborhood; green trees give plenty of shade to the sidewalk and the buildings painted in bright wight and yellow colors]
Similar to the U4 the U3 crosses through a valley halfway between Heidelberger Platz and Fehrbelliner Platz. And in fact this valley is a continuation of the one where the U4 station Rathaus Schöneberg is. But on the U3 there is no station here. Just a bridge over a small lake.
Tumblr media
[view over a small lake that is entirely surrounded by green trees]
Tumblr media
[a concrete bridge from the side; it has been decorated heavily with graffiti; below one of the arches of the bridge one can see dark, murky water; small ventilation holes reveal that the structure is hollow and hiding the subway from plain sight]
From there it is not far to the next station. Fehrbelliner Platz is where the U3 intersects the comparatively new U7. As a consequence the main station building is a very modern design and apparently there is a nuclear fallout shelter attached to this station. Some of the buildings around this square are used by the city for administration and in case of an attack the workers would evacuate to the station and shelter underground.
Tumblr media
[a modern structure with stepped, flat roof pieces that have several rounded corners sits on the other side of a large street; most of the facade is tiled in bright red but a clock tower partially in bright green pokes over the rest of the station]
The line then continues under the Hohenzollerndamm to the station Hohenzollernplatz, both named for the dynasty that ruled over Prussia and then later the German Empire which then due to the incompetence of the Emperor supported Austria-Hungary in the July crisis of 1914 which then led to the first world war and the excruciating death of several million people. Maybe we should think about not naming nice places after awful people like that.
Tumblr media
[a staircase to the underground with a station sign is framed by two sturdy rock pillars; on each pillar perches a stone eagle each looking in another direction, seemingly guarding the entrance]
Thematically fitting the next station on the line is Spichernstraße. Named for the small village of Spicheren in France, where a deciding battle in the Franco-German war of 1870 took place. After the German victory in said war, Wilhelm I was crowned emperor of Germany in the occupied Versailles.
Fortunately the place where this station is, is not nearly as grim. It’s a nice and green street with residential buildings and a few shops. The sidewalk is nice and wide and the bike lane forms a really pleasant to ride and safe way to use this straight street to get around.
Tumblr media
[the stairs to the station is covered by a blue metal roof; two bikes are parked at frames right next to the entrance; large trees form a green roof for the whole street]
The next station is Augsburger Straße which shares this very simple, modern style of entrance. This station is in fact quite new compared to the rest, as it was opened in 1961 to replace the station Nürnberger Straße. The old station there was deemed too close to the station Spichernstraße which was connected to the U9 at around the same time.
Tumblr media
[two stairs to the subway are on opposite sides of a street; each is framed by metal railings to prevent people falling in; a few trees stand in front of modern buildings; a few people mill about the intersection]
From there it is just a few street corners until one suddenly stands in the center of the City West. Wittenbergplatz, for which the station there is named is surrounded by busy stores. The beautiful station building sits right in the center of all the people going to the pricey stores. The U3 is truly a bit magical. With just a bit of time it can get you from a farm to a fancy upper-class department store.
Tumblr media
[the station building is built in classical style and looks a bit like a Greek temple; large, blocky columns frame the doors and on window panes above the three entrances is written in golden letters: Bahnhof Wittenberplatz Untergrund Bahn; on a small lawn on the right stands a metal frame with signs; the top one reads: Orte des Schreckens, die wir niemals vergessen dürfen (transl: Places of horror, that we must never forget); the signs beneath list the names of concentration camps]
Tumblr media
[a few along the Tauentzienstraße; on the left is the Kaufhaus des Westens, a fancy department store; in the distance among some high rises one can see the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial church, its top a gaping hole; the center of the street has a footpath and green space; thick red pipes snake across the street over the heads of people]

Gaspard’s Empty Throne: Verchiel in 9:43
Explanation and zoomed in quadrants below! (Beware of spoilers for @dalishious‘s incredible fic Journey’s End)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We don’t know a lot about Verchiel in canon. It is somewhere along the Imperial Highway, it’s in a valley, it’s heavily militarized, and it has an alienage. There is little else in canon. So, when my amazing, incredible, stunning, and magnificent partner Lydia, known to this fandom as @dalishious, asked me to help them visualize Verchiel for the upcoming events of their fic Journey’s End, I couldn’t resist making yet another map.
Influences:
This one isn’t that deep. I took influences from ancient Korinth, medieval Carcassonne, the city that I live in that I will not name as not to dox myself, and my pre-existing map of Halamshiral in 9:39 (which means a bit of second-hand Versailles sprinkled in) and remixed it all together a bit. I did not invest nearly as much time into this map as into the Halamshirals.
Headcanons:
- The population is around 20,000, fluctuating daily with trading caravans arriving and leaving en masse. The population of the alienage is roughly 200, the population of Petit Halamshiral is around 500.
- A lot of the economy of Verchiel is based on it laying on a central node in the Orlesian trading network.
- Given the trading traffic Verchiel receives, merchants often camp in tents on the two vast market places, depending on whether they transport common or luxurious goods, giving the two market places their names.
- “Petit Halamshiral” is a heavily fortified district behind high walls that lies on a small, rather even space in the mountain north of the city. As the mountain is rather steep, the district is easy to defend, especially since every army who wishes to conquer the city is forced through the so-called Bottleneck, a fortified wide path connecting Petit Halamshiral to the main city.
-Petit Halamshiral has been a pet project of the rulers of Verchiel since they fell out with the local administrators of Halamshiral in 5:05 exalted. It imitates the architecture of Halamshiral’s High Quarter, somewhat mockingly. The Palace in the Fortress is a direct imitation of the Imperial Palace in Halamshiral. The Imperial Crown has always somewhat tolerated that insult. This is not me reusing assets because I am tired
- The eight estates around the Chantry in Petit Halamshiral belong to the eight Chevaliers of Verchiel. Their estates are vast and contain large meadows as every month, the position of host of the weekly tournaments and duels changes.
- The military academy has been the ace up Gaspard’s sleeve during the Civil War. Commoners can enlist and receive strict military drill, akin to that of the Chevaliers, who also teach in the academy and lead the elite soldiers upon graduation. The academy grounds feature an artifical forest and artifical city block to train for different combat situations.
- Petit Halamshiral could never house all of Verchiel’s population in the case of a siege. Before his death by Ethena’s arrow, Gaspard devised an emergency military strategy of scorched earth where the besieging army could be tricked into entering the Commoner District and shut in while the district would be systematically burned.
- The western walls of the Commoner’s District are more fortified than the ones on the east because the rulers of Verchiel feared their enemies to the west more. The northern walls are less fortified because the rulers of Verchiel expected to see any upcoming army that could stage an attack from the mountain down long before it could assemble properly.
- The Fortress stands on the same place a small Dalish castle stood before the violent annexation of the Dales during the Exalted Marches.
- The area around the Alienage is worn-down and inhabited by Verchiel’s poorest because the Chevaliers do often drunkenly set fire to the area after their violent raids on the Alienage.
- The Commoner’s District features several dozen city meadows, on which the population grows their own crops and even engages in animal husbandry to offset the oftentimes draconian taxes.
Creation process:
Took me six hours or so to make this map. I probably made a lot of rookie mistakes because it has been so short of a time. I am quite exhausted lately. I am extremely tired right now
Additional notes:
I love Lydia more than I can ever compress into words. Everything good about this world is reflected in their heart. May they one day receive the limitless kindness that they deserve.

The Highlights of Morocco’s Imperial Cities
Tumblr media
Travelers visiting Morocco are enchanted by the varied architecture, the Medinas on cobbled streets, the dazzling sands of the Sahara, and the stunning snow-capped Atlas Mountains whilst staying in brilliant Riads (traditional homes sometimes converted to hotels that have unique courtyards that conveniently ventilate the structure) on lush gardens in a labyrinth of culture, history and beauty. Surely Morocco Guided Tours have heard of the film Casablanca, the romantic 1942 film starring Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. It takes place in the enticing city in northwest Morocco. What some of us do not know is Morocco has four “Imperial Cities” - each having been capital at least once and several times for a couple. They are, in no particular order: Fes (Fez), Marrakech, Rabat and Meknes. Interestingly, Casablanca isn’t necessarily the most captivating city to visit. To the north of Casablanca, and also on the shores of the Atlantic, is the current capital of Rabat.
Rabat (meaning “fortified place” showcasing its prominent military importance) has a lesser population than Casablanca - slightly over one million inhabitants. It has a heavy French influence and houses the King and embassies. Its main languages are Arabic and French. Most escorted group tours go to the abandoned mosque (the Almohad ruler who started it died) with the incomplete Hassan Tower which is about half the intended size -approx 140 ft. Also commonly visited are the Royal residence (Dar-al-Makhzen), Pietri Square, the Bouregreg Marina, the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Rabat Archaeological Museum and the Riad district. Stop at a zoo (Zoo de Rabat), the gorgeous Andalusian Gardens or perhaps Les Jardins Exotiques de Bouknadel, the Mausoleum of Mohammad V, the Museum Mohamed VI of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the must-visit Chellah, an ancient Roman ruin. The weather and food are blissfully Mediterranean, therefore beach activities and lounging are constant go-tos.
Meknes, partially surrounded by ancient walls encompassing exquisite gates (such as Bab Mansour) considered some of the best-preserved of the Islamic world, was capital from 1672-1727. It is about 80 miles inland from Rabat and is a bustling, though less populated and noticed, city that some feel is easier to navigate. Intended by its creator, Moulay Ismail, to rival Versailles, a lot of it (including the walls) was leveled by an earthquake in 1755. The prices here may be more reasonable and the people more friendly. Some noteworthy sights are the Bou Inania Medersa, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, Dar Al-Makhzen, Jamai Palace (inside is the Museum of Moroccan Arts) and the El Hedim Square (Place El Hadim) providing entertainment such as snake-charmers, story-tellers, horse riding and medicine men. Nearby are souks and famous confectionary merchants. Fortifications were key to Ismail so there is an impressive stable (for 12,000 horses!) and granary. Maybe stroll through Moulay Idris if you have a good sense of direction. Take a guided tour through the rolling hills to the nearby amazing Roman ruins of Volubilis, perhaps the best preserved ruins in northern Africa.
Fez is considered the heart of Morocco - at least in a religious or intellectual sense (and it is more inland than coastal, like Marrakech). It also has a population of just over a million. See the medinas of old Fez (Fes el-Bali), the streets resplendent with an onslaught to the senses - narrow winding paths through food stands, silk and tapestry shops, brass and copper souks, mosques and bazaars and lots of people! Delight in bakers, butchers and spice vendors selling their delicacies. Along with the old Fes see the Chaouwara Tanneries, the Kairaouine Mosque and University (possibly the oldest university in the world), the Jewish Cemetery & Habarim Synagogue and the Medersa Bou Inania. The New Fez, Ville Nouvelle, was built by the French so it has the feel of a French provincial town. It has wide boulevards with delicious dining (cap the night off with some of the famous mint tea) and local entertainment.
Last of the Morocco Imperial Cities is Marrakech. It is dubbed the Red (or alternatively, Ochre) City because of red sandstone buildings built by Ali ibn Yusuf in 1122-1123. It is nestled about fifteen or so miles from the base of the Atlas Mountains, has a more semi-arid climate (compared to the coastal cities) and is replete with local markets (souks), gardens, monuments, palaces, food, fun and entertainment.
