Seren's Studies: Odd Squad UK -- "The Odd Ness Monster" Episode Followup, Part 1
10 years and we finally get our first look at Odd Squad's take on Nessie. It's sure to be an odd-essie.
...Yeah, even I cringed halfway into that pun.
I hear this is a good episode, so let's hope those folks are right. At this point I'm like a kid at Christmas who didn't get what they wanted from Santa but will abso-fuckin'-lutely keep screaming and begging.
Below the break!
And your writer for this episode, who has an extensive resume and has written for quite a few things, including some kids stuff. Already off to a solid start, but I'm very cautiously optimistic.
Hey, remember the Thrimes from Season 2? Meet their sister.
Wouldn't be the first time we've had a cold open with mimes, either. I'm blanking on which episode, but I distinctly remember a Season 1 cold open that had a mime who threw berets at Olive and Otto and had terrible rapping skills.
(Editing note: It was "A Case of the Sing-Alongs", that's it!)
God, it's like dangling fuckin' keys with these children. Byootiful.
"Ma'am, you're not really trapped in an invisible glass box!"
Which, of course, is the mime equivalent of telling a magician to their face that magic isn't real. Way to be an ass, Orli.
At the very least, Orli's more patient with mimes than Olive and Otto combined. And the entire Season 2 cast bar Oona.
Yeah, speaking of Season 1...this is reminding me of the cold open with the man who had to apologize to the ocean because he said it was cold, then Olive running right into a barrier because she complained about the sand being too hot.
I think you can tell which one's played better.
If you listen real close, you can hear Pink's "Get the Party Started" playing faintly in the background.
...Oh. It's New Year's. Which was already done better in Season 1 and guys, really, can we stop with the Season 1 references? God sakes, they're getting old and I'm trying to keep the cynic glasses off for this one.
I'm...not too clear on what you have to do to win the raffle, but it sounds like "find the next" after playing it back five times over.
Is it...find the next season? Because I can do that! Gimme that copium, bitch, and lemme rip!
(Few seconds in: it's "find an X".)
Ohhhh come now. Y'all knew they were gonna win it. They have side character superiority. They're part of the main plot. Of course they're gonna win it.
*giggles uncomfortably*
My mind, tainted by years of watching horrifying PSAs and PIFs, is going in very dark places right now.
LOOKIT THIS SMUG SONUVABITCH. SHE KNOWS SHE'S LEADIN' 'EM TO THE ODD NESS MONSTER. SHE K N O W S .
Their prize is a chance at death. And not just their deaths.
(On a side note: this elevator is playing the smooth jazz version of "Take Away One", which is a brilliant touch, but I find it was better executed in "Old Odd, New Tricks". Apparently it was also in "Lift Off" too, but my point still stands.)
"A place where no one has been in many moons."
Hehehe byootiful. All right, fandom, get crackin' on what constitutes as a moon in the Oddverse and let me revel in the deja vu of seeing this argument often in the MLP fandom.
Here, it's implied to be years. Centuries. Millennia even. Certainly longer than a month.
Okay, I'd be laughing more genuinely if not for these unsettling lift shots because this subba-hubba-hubba gag is actually funny.
The floor is not lava.
But if you fall, it damn well will be lava.
Okay, I can appreciate the twist, but no amount of money in the world will be able to convince me that this is a dinosaur Nessie. And I'm not talking about plesiosaurs. This is a Dino Dex dinosaur that found its way into this show and this is really just a thinly-veiled crossover.
Headcanon accepted. Try me, bitch. Trailer came out today. Try me.
"The monster was here first. We built HQ over her, that way we can stop her when she wakes up."
So this HQ is underground, to a certain degree. The multi-sub basement is probably near the Earth's core, hence why it's so hot...and since this is a flipped version of Nessie, of course it prefers heat.
Huh. All right. I dig it. Already more sane than building Walmarts on Native American burial grounds, though if she prefers heat sources then I'm sure there's tons of those in the UK.
I honestly don't know who said "worst prize ever" here, but I'm cackling because they haven't even tried to stop her yet and are still in the exposition stage and they're already complaining.
Frankly, though, they're in the right.
Wh...but how, though? Lasers? Gamma radiation? Some kind of opioid released in waves?
I'd think a simple violin could do the trick -- get Orli on that shit -- but this is Odd Squad and so this shall be complicated.
"We just need two worthy agents to be here when she wakes and send her back to sleep."
And you decided on a raffle, wherein you pick...a Scientist and a Security agent? Not, y'know, a Creature Care agent? Are you so low on numbers that you don't have any Creature Care agents?
...No, wait, that's a rhetorical question.
Hoooooold up, hold up. So this episode is gonna run through the span of a year...in 8 minutes?
That's shit I expect from 5-minute My Little Pony Tell Your Tale, not 11-minute Odd Squad.
Putting aside that this is a pretty wild spin on the calendar math moral, Captain O insisting that she's always serious will never not be hilarious.
AND THEY DON'T EVEN USE THE TIME CARD??????????
NOOOOOOOOOO. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. WHOEVER IS IN CHARGE OF EDITING, YOU SADISTIC SHIT I HOPE YOU GET STUFFED INTO A CANNON AND SHOT TO JUPITER. WHY NOT USE THE TIME CARD HUH. H U H .
You know that if Tim had his way, this episode would be over in less than 11 simply by fiddling about with a time machine.
Hey, crazy idea: maybe they could use the TARDIS if it's still in town!
Oper- Agent Ook?
Wow, I didn't realize a cut character from Super Monkey Ball: Banana Rumble was in this show. My little Odd Squad crossover fan project premise is gonna come along real nice.
(This is a joke. There is no Agent Ook in the premise.)
Oh my God...we somehow went from Oswald, to Octavius, to...Ook.
Sure, they tried with the main and side characters' names. One-shots, though? Nope. "Over" was a better name for a character who had Starscream-like motives!
And it's so dusty that she dug it out of the goddamn archives!
Ohhhh...so it's a calendar math moral, but it deals with UK seasons.
Okay. All right. I can dig it, so long as the writing is good and the plot is interesting.
So the UK seasons are just the US seasons but...pushed back by a month?
Oh no. Ohoho no. I can't fault the episode for this. No, no, I'm faulting the entire fucking UK culture. Love you bunches, but what the fuck are your calendar seasons?
(On to Part 2!)

So. Have we talked about “Child’s Play?” because people have talked about Child’s Play a lot, but here’s THE THING. Because the Battle between Good and Evil was never finished (bc eff Lloyd’s Grandpa imo) Cloud Kingdom aka Zeus’ Castle or some shit but in Ninjago where destiny is written in your scroll is like. “This guy. Totally not coincidence or bias.” The episode is all “sorry kid no comics for you, gotta train” - “oh no mission! Squad up” “oh no we got turned into kids” “lmao see? being a kid isn’t easy” “oh giant dinosaur on the loose about to eat everyone THANKS DAD” “magic tea to fix everyone’s ages and turn the Dino to dust! Oh oops, we dropped it” and then? Lloyd, who quotes his favorite comic dude “fear? Fear isn’t a word where I come from!” earlier in the ep, in response to being tood “you’ll miss out on your childhood! It’s not fair!” Changes it to “fair? Fair isn’t a word where I come from!” and throws the magic tea, hence the aging up. In the final, in spirit he is much younger. You are 10 years old, and you have to fight your father. You think you may need to kill him. You are 10 years old, the world has fallen to darkness, and a child with a broken leg climbs a tower to the darkest point in the sky and brings back the light. The ep ends with “There comes a time when we all must grow up. When that time comes, it's important not to forget the lessons of our childhood. Because our childhood is the greatest training ground one will ever have.” And I think it changed the brain chemistry of most people in fandom. So how are we doing, how’s everyone, Feliz navidad.
……wow again.
what kind of episode…

Don't know if this has been asked for ranking already but, top 10 bots who are the most precious cinnamon rolls and deserve their own protection squads.
Any bots??? Shit, I fucking got you. There are so many boys that need to be protected.
*note none of these are in any order. Each baby here is valid.
Tfp Smokescreen. Have you seen him??? He is precious, he tries so fucking hard, and gave up the chance to be a freaken PRIME for those he loves. He’s dumb, and he deserves smooches, and none of the hate I’ve seen for him.
Rid2015 Sideswipe. Oh my god. That boy has some issues. He has issues, he has looks, and needs a fucking hug. I’d kill for his boy if it made him smile. Literally look at the ‘sideswipe’ tag, I love him so much.
Cyberverse Maccadam. He old as shit, but dude had been through so much, he just wants to give his friends drinks and tell his gay little riddles. I’d like to hold him and tell him how much he means to me.
G1 Rumble. Stupid ass, small ass, gremlin ass little monster. He will kick your ass, steal your Nintendo switch, and his brother will beat you up if you try to stop him. He’s so small and awful, he needs protection.
Prime wars Emissary. I’ve known him for like, three episodes, but he’s so spunky, so cute, so small, so adorable, I’d drive him around town with the top down, and he’d love it.
Armada Demolisher. He’s such a baby (Don’t cry boo your tits are so fat) and he cares so much. He cries over any sad movie ending, and demands a hug for it. Someone give him a hug and a blanket, dear god he’s so sweet and good I cannot begin-
Rescue bots Salvage. Big boy with the manners of a young farmer, he is just the sweetest little bumpkin you’ve ever seen. All he wants to do is make stuff out of trash, and help people. Big, sweet boy, and I’d like to smooch him.
RID2001 Skybyte. Everyone loves him, and for good reason. Poetry boy who just wants to be recognized, he can’t even evil accidently, it’s so goddamn funny. Precious, stupid as shit boy.
tfa Jettwins. Oh. My god. they’re so precious and they’ve been through so fucking much, someone give them anything they ask for. So cute and precious, and in a cheeky way, kinda full of themselves. It’s great.
tfa Scrapper. I know I already had a tfa character here, but Scrapper is in a league of his own. He’s precious, and everyone is sleeping on his fucking ass. He has a pet dino that he calls ‘baby’, whom he feeds empty cans to. He’s adorable, he’s stupid, I love him.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous
Review time! I actually meant to write this up, yesterday...but then, I forgot, and by the time I remembered, again, I had already closed down the laptop for the night ^^;. So now, here I am xD.
Anyway, so yesterday, I finally sat down and watched “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous”, for the first time. I never bothered to watch it, before, because it just looked so incredibly cheesy, kiddie, and cringey (honestly, I think a lot of people thought this, at first). But, after the pilot episode, I was surprised at how good it was! In my opinion, it was well-written, the voice-acting was really good (then again, maybe it’s just me, but I don’t recall disliking any voice-acting in all my years of watching anime and cartoons and playing video-games), and I even liked the animation. The animation for the dinosaurs looked really well done! I loved that Steven Spielburg is involved as one of the producers, and that the same sound fx’s for the dinosaurs in the movies was also used in this show!
Yeah, I had very low expectations with this show before actually sitting down and watching it ^^;.
As I watched more of the season, I found myself getting totally hooked! The suspense was real, and I liked that the show went into a more realistic route like the movies did. I mean, it’s “Jurassic Park/World”, what do you expect xD? I read, somewhere, that I guess Steven Spielburg was trying to persuade the creators to go down the intense and horror road with this show. I think it kinda worked! I mean, I grew up with the “Jurassic Park” movies, and enjoyed the “Jurassic World” movies, so some things were a little predictable to me (there are just some rules you gotta follow when it comes to dinosaurs, ok? xD). But even with these little predictions, the show always managed to catch me by surprise.
SPOILER ALERT!!! I really loved that the show took place during the first Jurassic World movie. It was funny because when I first saw the I-Rex, I was like “I thought that thing was dead, man!” lol! So I was surprised to see him, again (or her, I don’t remember which), and to realize that the show does take place during the first “Jurassic World” movie. Even the Raptor Squad showed up! Once.... But they still showed up xD!
In case you haven’t noticed, already, I’m a giant nerd.
I also loved how many times the show seemed to throw back to the previous movies. I mean, SPOILER ALERT!!! I never expected to see that velociraptor resonating chamber, at all! I mean, it only showed up, once, but it was still very cool to see! The show had some elements of other movies done by Spielburg, as well. I only recognized a few of them...I never saw a lot of Spielburg’s stuff partly because of disinterest. Some of them were just a definite “no” in my book.
Anyway.... I’m usually one to enjoy music (OSTs) from movies, tv shows, and video-games. I’m gonna be honest, though. For “Camp Cretaceous”, I did not really pay attention to the music. I was focused more on the dialogue and what was happening with the characters. Even when I watched the show a 2nd time (yes, I went back and rewatched it because it was that enjoyable), I still didn’t pay attention to the music. Probably because it’s the kind of music that just doesn’t snatch my attention like a lot of other OSTs do. Oh well.
I liked that the main antagonist was the Carnotaurus! I was expecting Rexy, or yes, even a Spinosaurus, or even a Baryonyx to show up, but neither of them ever did. And the Carno being the main antagonist reminded me of Disney’s “Dinosaur”...I liked that movie, growing up! So the Carno was a nice change. Gives the raptors and the t-rex a break xD. I guess the I-Rex was a main antagonist, as well, but I feel the Carno showed up more often than he did.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this first season, and I cannot wait for season 2...which is happening a lot sooner than I expected, which makes me slightly skeptical because a date for a second season, that soon, makes me feel like the show is being rushed. And when a show or movie is rushed, things tend to not run so smoothly and brings more disappointment to viewers than enjoyment. But, we’ll see! Hopefully, the 2nd season will be just as good as the 1st! I...would not really say this is entirely a kids show...I’m only saying that because, considering it’s “Jurassic Park/World”, things happen that I personally don’t feel like a child should be seeing. At least, not alone. Then again, I feel like “family-friendly” isn’t exactly the right word to describe “Camp Cretaceous”...and honestly, I’m too dumb to think of a right word for it. I don’t know, I suck at describing anything. For all I know, maybe it is family-friendly, and I just don’t feel like it is. Whatevs.
As to who my favorite characters are...I mean, I like all of them! I feel like I relate just a little bit more to Yasmina, though. Like her, I have trust issues, and quite enjoy being in my shell...but I also enjoy hanging out with my friends, so I’ve got that going for me xD. And like her, I draw stuff. Maybe not as often, and I’m nowhere near as talented, but every once in a while, I will pick up a pencil and start drawing.
I relate a little bit to Darius because like him, I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to dinosaurs. I’m not as nerdy as he is...I mean, there’s only a certain amount of dinosaurs that I can remember the names of and what they look like. Maybe if I had dedicated my whole childhood to dinosaurs, I might be exactly as dino-nerdy as Darius is, lol! I think my love for dinosaurs started with the first movie (I can thank my dad for this one!), and the t-rex immediately became my favorite. Mainly because it just looks and sounds cool, and is terrifying. The velociraptor became my 2nd favorite (although, over the past few years, the two have switched ranks in my book).
So, basically, both Yasmina and Darius are my favorite characters.
Also, I just want to say before I end this review: I don’t really ship anybody with anybody in this show. I never saw it (and don’t want to), but the whole romance thing is like the anime, “Attack on Titan”. There is just no time for romance when you are just trying to survive on an island full of dinosaurs...a lot of them being carnivores. And, these are just kids that we are talking about, here. Well, they’re really teenagers, but still slightly young enough to be considered as kids. Another problem I have with shipping these characters is that...if they do get rescued and get off the island alive and in one piece...what are the chances that they’ll ever see each other, again? That’s one of the things they even pointed out in the show.
That’s another thing I like about “Camp Cretaceous”. The kids bring up a ton of good points that I feel like a lot of characters in shows or movies don’t think about when it comes to survival and things like that.
I mean, if you guys want to ship the characters with each other, that’s fine. It’s just me, personally, that I feel like the CC characters shouldn’t be shipped with each other. I also will just never understand why literally everything fictional has to have romance in it in some way. I’m gonna be completely honest with you, I feel like romance has become just a little bit overdone. But only because I see it in every show or movie that I watch. Maybe that’s just also me not being into the whole romance genre.
Anyway, if I were to give “Camp Cretaceous” a rating, I’d give it a fair 9/10. I’m really glad I decided to just sit down and watch this show. It really just blew my mind! I’m curious to see what season 2 will bring.
And that is my review on “Camp Cretaceous”! I hope you all have a nice day, and have a Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays or whatever you celebrate!
Later!

Fantastic Four Vol 1 #227
Thurs Apr 30 2020 [06:34 PM] Wack'd: Another story catalyzed by space objects falling to Earth [06:35 PM] Wack'd: This time a meteor lands in a lake in Pennsylvania [06:36 PM] Wack'd: One of Reed's science friends calls Reed and is like "hey, I know you're big into meteors, wanna come do science and hang out" [06:37 PM] Bocaj: Space needs to stop dumping its junk in our yard [06:37 PM] Wack'd: I mean hey, we do it too. It's reciprocal pollution [06:37 PM] Umbramatic: The Great Space Junk Exchange [06:38 PM] Bocaj: When has a thing earth sent v'gering into space ever caused a problem [06:38 PM] Umbramatic: ...what the fuck were the dinosaurs polluting space with to get what they did [06:38 PM] Bocaj: Its not like we send a hulk of stuff and crash it into gladiator planets [06:38 PM] maxwellelvis: @Umbramatic Tobacco [06:38 PM] Wack'd: @Umbramatic : *Land Before Time* videocassettes [06:38 PM] Umbramatic: dbtgfrh ojgifmhk hjnl;.'; [06:38 PM] Bocaj: Ha [06:39 PM] maxwellelvis: The real reason the dinosaurs went extinct. [06:39 PM] Wack'd: So anyway the team is going on vacation! Johnny wants to get a tan and Sue is like "let's bring the grill" and I'm like "you're. You're going to Pennsylvania" [06:39 PM] Wack'd: Like yes the caption specifies it landed at a resort but like, c'mon [06:39 PM] Bocaj: CAN Johnny tan? [06:39 PM] Bocaj: He's exposed to heat and light every day of his life [06:40 PM] Bocaj: Can Johnny Storm get a sunburn? [06:40 PM] Bocaj: Also: why isn't his name Blaze? [06:40 PM] Wack'd: Maybe he can choose to but it's unpleasant to use his powers for it and he prefers the old-fashion way [06:40 PM] Bocaj: Hm, acceptable handwave [06:40 PM] Wack'd: Like there's a difference between being exposed to solar radiation from billions of miles off and setting yourself on fire [06:41 PM] Wack'd: Ben is grumpy because Alicia is bogged down with work and can't make it, and his only other friend will be busy with science [06:41 PM] Wack'd: (You'd think he could hang out with Sue and Johnny and Franklin but whatever) [06:42 PM] maxwellelvis: Sandman stopped taking his calls? [06:42 PM] Wack'd: Sandman tries to beat him up on the regular, what're you talking about [06:42 PM] maxwellelvis: Ahh, right, you're not reading Two-In-One. [06:42 PM] maxwellelvis: Okay, there's ONE thing in Marvel Two-In-One that causes an actual change to the status-quo in Marvel; there's an issue where Ben goes to a bar and finds Sandman is also there. So he sits down with him and they talk. [06:43 PM] Wack'd: "Yer off yer meds again, aren'tcha, Flint" [06:43 PM] Bocaj: One of my favorite scenes in the DCAU [06:44 PM] Bocaj: Get rekt that scene of Batman talking to Ace, psychic meltdown [06:44 PM] maxwellelvis: By the end of the issue, Sandman has gone legit, and for like a decade, he stayed so, until eventually some Spider-Man story needed him back on the Sinister Six. [06:44 PM] Bocaj: (Because it implies that Only Batman can human at people is why) [06:44 PM] Wack'd: Decade does seem to be where Marvel status quo changes top out sadly [06:44 PM] Bocaj: I think it was after the clone saga [06:45 PM] Bocaj: During the panic mode 'shit roll it back roll everything back fuck fuck fuck' kneejerk [06:45 PM] Wack'd: Gotta remind people of the good ol days after that stinker, yeah [06:45 PM] maxwellelvis: Then it was close to like, two decades or something. [06:45 PM] maxwellelvis: That's an astonishingly long time in comics. [06:45 PM] Wack'd: Oh wow [06:45 PM] Bocaj: Funfact: Sandman was an Avenger [06:45 PM] Wack'd: Huh! [06:45 PM] Bocaj: Reserve, but still. [06:45 PM] Bocaj: Nice [06:46 PM] Wack'd: If nothing else the idea of him as a sympathetic crook seems to have stuck [06:46 PM] Wack'd: Which is not nothing [06:46 PM] Bocaj: Sam Raimi intensifies [06:46 PM] maxwellelvis: Marvel Two-In-One Vol 1 #86 is the relevant issue. [06:46 PM] maxwellelvis: So it hasn't happened yet at the time you're reading, is the other reason you hadn't heard about it. That issue was in 1982, so about a decade and a half, give or take. [06:47 PM] maxwellelvis: And you weren't far-off with that JLU joke, @Wack'd, says here that a big thing in the issue is Sandman dealing with the trauma of having been merged with Hydro-Man. Which is probably why he's receptive to the idea of going legit. [06:48 PM] Wack'd: Alright then [06:48 PM] Wack'd: ...anyway Sandman isn't. In this one. So [06:49 PM] maxwellelvis: Yeah, this was a lot more explaining for a dumb joke than I anticipated. [06:49 PM] Wack'd: Back to the story at hand [06:50 PM] Wack'd: Ben decides he's gonna go fishing. He's got a floppy hat and a vest and everything. Also: more womanly stereotypes!
[06:51 PM] Umbramatic: i love ben's fishing outfit [06:52 PM] Bocaj: He looks so happy [06:52 PM] maxwellelvis: Fishing hats like that always make me flash back to that M*A*S*H episode where Col. Blake salutes while wearing his hat and hooks his finger on it. [06:52 PM] maxwellelvis: "What are you trying to DO to me?!" [06:52 PM] Bocaj: Oooow [06:52 PM] Wack'd: They fly into Pennsylvania and things have. Escalated.
[06:52 PM] Bocaj: "I don't want to hoard gold, I want to turn people into dinosaurs" "HE KEEPS SAYING THAT" [06:53 PM] Wack'd: For the record earlier cutaway panels show this is a bird that got mutated by the meteor but I got distracted and forgot to post it [06:53 PM] Umbramatic: that pterosaur's wings make me viscerally angr--AND THAT MAKES IT EVEN WORSE [06:53 PM] maxwellelvis: Somewhere a paleontologist is weeping [06:53 PM] maxwellelvis: OR [06:53 PM] maxwellelvis: Oh cool, I didn't know the writers of *Dino Squad* ghostwrote this issue [06:53 PM] Umbramatic: that's me, i'm the weeping palentologist [06:54 PM] Mousa The 14: The bird didn’t mutate, it simply regressed to an earlier form [06:54 PM] Bocaj: HROINK! [06:54 PM] Umbramatic: if it did that it'd be more like a velociraptor [06:54 PM] Mousa The 14: Hroink indeed. Hroink indeed. [06:55 PM] maxwellelvis: Pterosaurs and birds are completely different groups of archosaurs, that's a mutation, Mousa. [06:55 PM] Umbramatic: YES [06:55 PM] Wack'd: Not really sure why this merited a silent panel
[06:55 PM] Bocaj: Just put up an invisible force slide [06:55 PM] Mousa The 14: Artist showing off [06:56 PM] Wack'd: How bad he can draw children? [06:56 PM] Umbramatic: i dunno which makes a better reaction image, franklin's face or the pterosaur's [06:56 PM] Mousa The 14: Or to show Franklin is about to use. THE POWER [06:56 PM] Bocaj: Its not the worst tiny adult i've seen in comics [06:56 PM] maxwellelvis: Unless it leads to another god-child moment, it's a rather pointless reaction image. [06:56 PM] Bocaj: I'm not saying that its all Franklin's fault but I blame Cable on him [06:56 PM] Bocaj: God-child arms race [06:57 PM] Wack'd: So the monster explodes, and Reed collects its gem--EUGH
[06:57 PM] Bocaj: I don't like this. [06:58 PM] Wack'd: Ftr Gideon Carruthers is Reed's science friend. We already have a Gideon so I'll call him Carruthers [06:58 PM] Umbramatic: -screaming- [06:58 PM] Wack'd: To disambiguate him from the rich doofus [06:58 PM] Bocaj: I'd laugh my ass off if he looked just like gideon from gravity falls [06:58 PM] Bocaj: or even gideon from Scotts Pilgrim [06:59 PM] maxwellelvis: I know there's some sci-fi parasite this reminds me of, but I can't think what. [06:59 PM] Bocaj: Captain N mother brain? [06:59 PM] maxwellelvis: Parasite [06:59 PM] Bocaj: She was a parasite on my peace of mind [07:02 PM] Wack'd: Sue takes a moment to check that Franklin isn't traumatized but he's like "we fought and won, just like in the comics!" And then uh
[07:02 PM] Wack'd: Were comics caught up in the Satanic Panic or whatever? Like [07:02 PM] Umbramatic: -screams- [07:02 PM] Wack'd: Seems more like a 50s thing [07:02 PM] Wack'd: Also yeah that sure is a Franklin [07:02 PM] Bocaj: I think Wertham argued that kids couldn't distinguish comics from reality and yeah that was way before this I think [07:03 PM] Bocaj: I think in his book he cited an incident that I don't know if legit or not where a kid tied a blanket around their neck like a cape and jumped off a roof [07:03 PM] Wack'd: Eesh [07:04 PM] Bocaj: Not sure that could be laid at Superman's feet. He very clearly says 'I have alien powers from being an alien' [07:04 PM] Wack'd: Can't wait to see this kid's mutt mutate into MCGRUFF, THE CRIME DOG
[07:04 PM] Bocaj: Duff Dog Oh Yeah [07:04 PM] Bocaj: Suds McDuffie [07:04 PM] Wack'd: This is cool too I guess
[07:05 PM] maxwellelvis: I was going to say, I think a dire wolf is more likely. [07:07 PM] Umbramatic: awoooo [07:07 PM] Bocaj: Werewolves of Slyvania [07:07 PM] maxwellelvis: I really wish the LOTR movies had modeled the Wargs more on dire wolves than hyenas. [07:08 PM] Wack'd: Okay I think we can safely dismiss the idea of these mutations having some kind of basis in scientific reality
[07:08 PM] Wack'd: Paleontologists rest easy [07:08 PM] Umbramatic: FOREHEAD BEAM [07:08 PM] Bocaj: You've never seen a dog shoot a laser? [07:09 PM] Umbramatic: pidge shoots lasers all the time [07:09 PM] Wack'd: Anyway this time instead of the monster exploding Reed spots the parasite on the back of its neck and grabs it before self-destruct is triggered [07:09 PM] Wack'd: Kid gets his dog back and dog stops being a fiend [07:09 PM] Umbramatic: we have to prevent her from doing it to the neighbors [07:09 PM] Bocaj: Duffer... will live [07:10 PM] Wack'd: Reed I, uh, think the forehead laser puts a serious hole in your theory!
[07:11 PM] Wack'd: Also the fuck is the "evolutionary agent"? Is he claiming we have, like, an evolution gland that pumps evolution juice into our bodies that makes us not be weird history monsters? [07:12 PM] Wack'd: Okay so Reed elaborates that the forehead laser is because the parasite gives its hosts psychic powers to make them more powerful so they can steal gasoline to eat [07:12 PM] maxwellelvis: Well, sure, I can see how that- huh? [07:13 PM] Wack'd: "It makes a bizarre kind of sense," says Carruthers, who is also identified as a geologist and so I guess is just rolling with this [07:13 PM] Bocaj: Carruthers: "Its not a rock so i don't fuckin know" [07:14 PM] Wack'd: Sue is upset that Franklin is in danger and weird shit keeps finding them and Reed is like "we do have some quiet times, they just happen off-panel" and Sue is like "you're right, I'm sorry I snapped" [07:14 PM] Wack'd: And she wants a normal life and yadda yadda [07:14 PM] Bocaj: Like that time she played horsey [07:15 PM] Bocaj: REMEMBER THE HORSEY TIMES SUE [07:15 PM] Wack'd: Sue, hold on to your memories of like the first two pages of each recent arc [07:15 PM] Bocaj: Yeah! [07:16 PM] Umbramatic: thbijgthp oknjlph;[m'n [07:16 PM] Wack'd: So they send Ben down in scuba gear to get the meteor which does actually kinda look like it could be a Steven Universe corrupted gem. Unfortunately he brings something back with him
[07:17 PM] Wack'd: Remember: if a character says they want to go fishing in act one they need to catch a giant sea monster by act three [07:17 PM] maxwellelvis: Shai-hulud [07:17 PM] Umbramatic: poor ben [07:17 PM] Umbramatic: he just wanted to turn fish in to blathers [07:18 PM] Wack'd: Reed, being the smart intelligent thing he is, puts this round item down on the floor of a rocking boat [07:19 PM] Wack'd: It cracks open and [07:19 PM] Wack'd: And then Sue was the reverted evolution thingy
[07:19 PM] Bocaj: So whats the 'reverted evolution' of Sue [07:20 PM] Bocaj: Issue 1 Sue where she didn't ever contribute anything? [07:20 PM] Wack'd: Uh. Angry, I guess?
[07:20 PM] Bocaj: My idea was funnier and plausibly unfair [07:20 PM] Wack'd: True [07:21 PM] Bocaj: Hope this isn't another situation where Reed is justified in belting her [07:21 PM] Wack'd: Also Reed opens the cracked egg and finds five grooves for parasites to be in like seeds [07:21 PM] Wack'd: So after Sue there's one unaccounted for [07:21 PM] Bocaj: Dun dun dun [07:22 PM] Wack'd: Immediately resolved by it dropping out of a tree and on to Carruthers' neck [07:22 PM] Umbramatic: oh [07:22 PM] Bocaj: Whats tension anyway [07:23 PM] Wack'd: Hm. Reverting made his skin darker. Don't like that
[07:24 PM] Bocaj: I do like the resigned "Yep -- I wuz right" from Ben [07:24 PM] Bocaj: Don't like "uglier than the hulk" paired with the thing you said [07:25 PM] Wack'd: Anyway Carruthers goes after some oil because these things eat oil remember, so Johnny blows up the oil and Carruthers goes flying like in an action movie or a Looney Tune [07:25 PM] Wack'd: Thus knocking him out so Ben can get the parasite off him before he explodes [07:26 PM] Bocaj: Yaa~aaay [07:26 PM] Wack'd: Oh. Oh fuck [07:27 PM] Wack'd: I've been sitting here thinking "but why are the monsters blowing up anyway? How does that benefit the parasites? Surely they'd want to keep the host alive to keep collecting oil" [07:27 PM] Wack'd: Adding to that, Reed postulates time is a factor as to why some explode and some don't [07:28 PM] Wack'd: But, uh. I thiiiiiiink it might be a lot simpler than that
[07:29 PM] Wack'd: If I'm right, Franklin blew up the dragon and the sea monster. He wasn't around for the dog and Carruthers [07:29 PM] Bocaj: Dun dun DUUUUN [07:29 PM] Wack'd: (And probably wouldn't have blown them up if he had!) [07:29 PM] Bocaj: Geez Franklin, geez [07:30 PM] Wack'd: And now he's like "do I...blow up mommy? No, right? I feel like that's probably a no" [07:32 PM] Wack'd: Anyway Sue is not entirely mutated, just got some weird facial deformities and is a little out of it. Reed says its maybe her cosmic ray blood [07:32 PM] Umbramatic: *screams* [07:32 PM] Umbramatic: @ the franklin face [07:32 PM] Wack'd: Haha! VINDICATED
[07:33 PM] Wack'd: Honestly kudos to Moench here for successfully constructing a mystery I didn't know was a mystery until the reveal happened [07:33 PM] Wack'd: That's some good writing right there [07:34 PM] Wack'd: Less good writing: this
[07:34 PM] Umbramatic: so nice work [07:35 PM] Wack'd: Anyway Franklin blows up the parasite without hurting Reed or Sue and is very proud of himself [07:36 PM] Wack'd: And Reed concludes "uh maybe we should figure out exactly hat Franklin's deal is" before the whole team hightails it back to New York [07:36 PM] Wack'd: A happy ending maybe
[07:37 PM] Bocaj: OR IS IT? [07:37 PM] Wack'd: Nope, turns out they have another son [07:38 PM] Bocaj: Benjamin Jonathan Richards you were named after the two bravest men I know [07:39 PM] Wack'd: LETTERS! Everybody loves some letters [07:39 PM] Wack'd: Eric L Watts wants Johnny to fall in love with another superhero and Ben and Alicia to get married. I like one of those ideas [07:39 PM] Bocaj: Is that the one what did happen eventualy? [07:40 PM] Wack'd: I mean both of those happen eventually [07:40 PM] Bocaj: Or is it the one, due to the vagaries of gendered language, that has Johnny come out as queer? [07:40 PM] Wack'd: Ha [07:41 PM] maxwellelvis: Lyja isn't a superhero when she and Johnny meet, though. [07:41 PM] Wack'd: Someone wants to know how Sienkiewicz is pronounced! It's sinKEVitch [07:41 PM] Wack'd: @maxwellelvis He does also date Medusa, so [07:41 PM] Bocaj: He's dated Crystal and Medusa [07:41 PM] maxwellelvis: Good golly [07:41 PM] Bocaj: He dates Nova, not that one, who probably counts if Silver Surfer do [07:42 PM] Bocaj: Huh. This list of romantic partners I've found for him is shorter than you'd expect [07:42 PM] Wack'd: People are kind of tetchy at how much Reed stretches now. Two different letter writers are like "He's not Plastic Man!" [07:42 PM] Bocaj: Hah. [07:43 PM] Wack'd: And people really like the more domestic stuff, specifically how Sue is written [07:43 PM] Wack'd: I'm sure the fact that all the letter writers are dudes is a coincidence [07:44 PM] Bocaj: I'm kind of but not really but a little surprised that Carol and Johnny haven't gone on at least one date. They have a venn diagram social circle and Carol dated Spider-Man briefly which is a similar kind of energy [07:44 PM] Wack'd: Oh hey, look who's making her *Fantastic Four* debut

HBO Max New Releases: January 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
It’s a new year and everyone wants to put the vile cesspool that was 2020 behind them. Thankfully, HBO Max is coming out swinging to make the transition out of the hellyear even easier. HBO Max’s list of new releases for January 2021 is positively packed with notable film releases and even a fun HBO Max Original or two.
For starters, Search Party season 4 will arrive to HBO Max on Jan. 14. This season of the show with a now-surprising lifespan finds Dory Sief in the thrall of a deranged stalker…right after getting off on murder charges. These Brooklynites lead such fascinating lives! The other major original or note is the HBO documentary Tiger, that premieres on Jan. 10 and will delve into the complicated history of golfing legend Tiger Woods.
The real story this month, however, are the movies. Perhaps emboldened by its success with Wonder Woman 1984, HBO Max is filling up its servers with as many Warner properties that it can find. The Dark Knight trilogy, Blade, Chinatown, The Exorcist, Mad Max: Fury Road, No Country for Old Men, and Pulp Fiction all arrive on Jan. 1. Poltergeist and Stephen King’s It (1990) make things spooky on Jan. 15. Then the month closes out with, quite simply, the greatest movie of all time: The Mummy (1999). The downside here is that some of these are limited engagements, with the aforementioned WW1984, Blade, Ocean’s Eleven, and more all leaving at month’s end.
Still, January 2021 will provide plenty of filmic fun on HBO Max. Here is the full list for your perusal.

FEATURE: The Original Japanese Show That Gave Us Power Rangers Is the Greatest Thing in Existence
Image via Amazon
The now popular formula of “young people morph into masked heroes to fight a Big Bad using giant robots and other sci-fi weapons” might have been popularized in the West by Power Rangers but that’s not where it started. It, of course, all goes back to Spider-Man. In the 1970s, Toei and Marvel partnered up to exchange ideas, properties, and produce a bunch of sci-fi shows together. One of them was the Japanese Spider-Man, which differed slightly from the character we know today. Nothing major. It’s just that this Spider-Man gets his powers from the blood of an alien from Planet Spider and pilots a giant mecha called Leopardon to fight Professor Monster and his evil Iron Cross Army.
Toei and Marvel also produced a bunch of the so called Super Sentai shows, the later incarnations of which took the transforming giant robot bits from Spider-Man and combined them with idea of a squad of masked heroes, which quickly became the series staple. Eventually, one Super Sentai show, Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger (Dinosaur Squad Zyuranger), got spliced with scenes of American actors and was reworked in the US as Power Rangers, and it’s all thanks to Spider-Man. And yet, that’s still the least crazy thing about that particular show.
The Original Villain is So Much More Interesting
In Power Rangers, the alien Zordon needs the Power Rangers to fight Rita Repulsa after a bunch of astronauts stupidly free her from her Moon Prison. In Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, on the other hand, Rita is actually Bandora the Witch, and she is stupidly freed from an underground prison on Nemesis by astronauts that were studying the planet because it only gets close to Earth every 23 million years. How in the world would humans ever know this? Enough with your annoying questions, we have penny-farthings to fly.
After two astronauts free her, Bandora attacks Earth with Goldar (original/way better name: Grifforzer) while piloting a flying old-timey penny-farthing bike. Yeah, sure.

On Earth, Bandora uses her magic to merge a bunch of buildings together and create her palace. Then she straight up starts blowing crap up with magic, probably killing thousands in the process. Say what you will about this villainess, she is so much more hands-on than Rita, who only ever sat on the Moon and threw her staff onto Earth like some magical (yet somehow slightly less lethal) lawn dart.

The Original “Rangers” Are As Far From “Teenagers” As You Can Get
During the slaughter, Bandora is temporarily stopped by … a janitor. He actually turns out to be the White Magician Barza who’s been posted on Earth for millions of years, waiting in case Bandora ever came back. He more or less fills the role of Zordon on the show. He also looks like … this:
Image via Amazon
Please take a moment to take it all in. But not too long because we still haven’t gotten to the Rangers themselves. Rather than being “five teenagers with attitude,” they are in fact part of an extinct race that evolved from dinosaurs. That’s why their “Zords” are all prehistoric beasts: each represents the animal that gave birth to each dinosaur-human nation. So the Red Ranger is literally part T-Rex. The Black Ranger is apparently evolved from wooly mammoths. Does this make the Yellow Ranger, whose Zord was the sabretooth tiger, an actual catgirl? No, no, no. It makes HIM a catboy. Because the original Yellow Ranger is a guy. His name is LITERALLY “Boi.”
Image via Amazon
It’s why the Yellow Ranger, despite supposedly being female in the American version (played by Thuy Trang), didn’t have a skirt like the Pink Ranger. You can be sure she was a girl because when Barza woke everyone up, he made sure to add that there’s no time for the Pink Ranger to put on her make-up. But wake up from what, you ask? Ah, well … at the beginning of Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, the Rangers are in suspended animation, as they have been for 170 million years. The long sleep probably helped them cope with the fact that Bandora slaughtered all of their friends and families. The Red Ranger even mentions specifically how he lost his 10-year-old sister at the hands of the witch. Yeah, this series is a weird mix of wacky comedy and depressing personal trauma.
The Show Has Tons of Great Comedic Moments
The standard Rita foot soldiers, the Putty Patrollers, are first introduced as tiny, adorable little putty dolls that draw the Rangers in with their cuteness. Then when the dino-humans get close enough, they grow in size and hit them in their smiling, dumb faces.

There is plenty of weird, quirky humor like that throughout the show. One of the most memorable Power Ranger villains was Pudgy Pig, the pig head monster in a Roman Centurion helmet. His footage is, of course, taken from Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, specifically from the episode where he … just torments a normal Japanese family. They almost starve to death, and that’s sad but also the stakes here are so hilariously low, the entire thing turns into a giant farce, and you cannot stop looking because it’s a giant walking pig head just being a jerk to a bunch of random people.

Episode 9 is about the Rangers looking for a dinosaur egg. Episode 11 is about fighting a genie. Episode 12 is called “Papa's a Vampire!?” Another episode is about an elf who sucks things into a magic bottle. It’s all so tongue-in-cheek that it makes Power Rangers look SILLY because of how seriously they took what was essentially a weird kids’ show (with occasional genocide and PTSD). Watch both of them back to back and see if you agree.

Guess who just finished watching season 3 of Monsuno yesterday?
This loser
Let’s get into some thoughts (spoilers obviously):
- I have never wanted to pUNCH A PERSON IN THE THROAT SO MUCH THAN CHASE SUNO. He is such a materialistic, egocentric prick (I felt like punching him after four episodes)
- JINJA ALSO DESERVES TO BE SLAPPED WHILE I’M AT IT. Just leave Bren alone
- Going onto a different point, I was thoroughly surprised that the brought back the Bookman, Grandma Future and Mr Black for a few episodes. Delighted actually (it was one of the few things that I didn’t have inadvertently spoiled)
- Holy crap they brought Turbo back from the dead for one episode and turned Poisionwing all steampunk (which actually was just a colour change)
- Meanwhile, Darkspin never appeared at all (not even for a cameo)
- me watching episode 5 in a nutshell: okay why is Emmanuel on his own? why is he being an idiot? *episode reveals shitty twist* ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I WANT TO THROW MY PHONE ACROSS THE ROOM
- also I never thought that I would see Dr Klipse get demonically possessed
- megahyper evolution? I’m still watching Monsuno right?
- The Hands of Destiny were two digits short? Where were they? Dead? Anyway, the remaining fingers were actually pretty cute as kids
- Cockney accents are still not intimidating, especially if you’re a pint-sized psychic vampire
- It was never explained why Dr Klipse and Prof. Tallis teamed up...was it? Were they pooling resources for something...?
- We never really got to see the Punk Monks much. Nor Strike Squad, for that matter it was all taken up by Chase’s ego.
- Me, at episode 10: whelp, it’s three episodes away from the season finale. There’s no way they’ll reintroduce anyone. *episode twelve happens* HOLY CRAP DOM PYRO. I see you’ve recovered from you devastating loss (and completely replaced Dragonburn)
- I also like that episode for allowing Hargrave to villain (”Tah dah”)
- They gave Hargrave an acid-spitting wyvern guys
- I didn’t mind the dino Monsunos or the alien Monsunos that Droog ex Machima and his digits were using
- So Emmanuel got locked up at the end (I’m guessing Six did too)...what about the rest of the team? I already have an idea for a fanfic
The biggest problem about this show, it seems, is the writing is terrible. Hey, they have great ideas but the execution...hoo boy.
Still, I enjoyed this train wreck of a show. Why? It’s completely and utterly ridiculous and slowly becomes more so as the show progresses. You thought children having giant monsters was crazy? Wait until you see them with robot arms. Thought fusing Monsuno with humans was a terrible idea? Get ready for the dinosaurs. Believed that things were wild with steampunk Monsunos? You’re gonna love the alien Monsunos!
But I suppose the real hell is not the season itself but the realisation that you’ve invested your time and energy into a show that ends up burning up.
You know what, I’m glad it’s over. It means now my imagination can take over...
#monsuno#spoilers#don't worry i won't be leaving the fandom anytime soon#i'm in too deep for that being a possibility

DK: “Just a clarification though Mr Scary Robber, are you going to cut open my head with a scalpel and put the bullet in or-?"
The8: "Seokmin, now’s not a good time to be curious”
Robber: *puts gun at dk’s temple* “Do you want to find out?”
Woozi: “Well good riddance”
DK: “Honestly?"
Robber: "Yes, strange horse-looking boy”
The8: “Are you serious right now?”
Hoshi: “Must. Fight. Temptation. To. Dance. To. Mansae. GAHHHHH”
Scoups: “Hosh. NO”
DK: “In all honesty, I actually really want to know though” *smiles*
Robber: “Okay, I’ll grant you your wish and let you find out”
DK: “I didn’t wish for it but alrighty!”
Robber: *pulls trigger*
Scoups: "Alright! Hold up! Hold up! Sorry Mr robber-nim, please just ignore him, he’s my child and he is a little… you know” *circles finger around his head*
DK: “What does that mean?”
DK: “Are you implying that I’m crazy?!”
Scoups: “Omg Seokmin…”
Seungkwan: “Yeah Dorkyeom, he’s calling you crazy” divaboo alert
Vernon: “Not now kwan… bad timing to be sassy"
Hoshi: "Must. Contain. The. Need. To. Swing. Arms. In. The. Air.”
Seungkwan: “What? I’m just stating a fact, we were all thinking it, I’m just saying what everyone else was thinking out loud!”
Vernon: “Divaboo tone it down will ya?”
DK: “You want to know what crazy is? I’ll show you crazy!"
DK: *gets up from floor and starts doing his horse dance while screaming*
Seungkwan: "I can do better than that"
Seungkwan: *takes something from the floor as a microphone and starts singing and dancing like it’s his solo debut*
Robber: "What is this situation?"
DK: *scREAms*
Seungkwan: *starts high note battle*
Joshua: "VOCAL TEAM HIGH NOTE BATTLE!”
Jeonghan: *screams from over the counter*
Woozi: *screams a note so high that it made the robber drop his gun*
Robber: “What in god’s name was that?!”
Hoshi: “MANSAE MANSAE MANSAE YEH MANSAE MANSAE MANSAE YEHHH *does mansae choreography*
Jun: “MOVE IT HOSH! I’M IN THE CENTER!”
Jun: *hits robber in the eye as he swings his arms*
Robber: “OW!!! WHAT THE HECK THAT WAS MY EYE!!!”
Jun: “Sorry?”
Jeonghan: *giraffe mode on*
The8: *dabbing mode on* stop Minghao 2017
Dino: *Michael chanson mode on*
Wonwoo: *gives deep stare to robber*
Robber: "AHHHHH what is this noise? What is this stare… it makes me feel somewhat emotionally detached…?? it makes me reflect about the despicable life I’m living…”
Robber: “Why are so many children dancing about?! OMG are they multiplying?!?! How many are there? 10? 20? 30?!!” *collapses*
The Po-Po: “You have the right to remain silent, whatever you say may be used against you in court” *handcuffs the robber*
Robber: *still counting*
The Po-Po: “Well done kids, I don’t know how you did it, we’ve been trying to catch this robber for a year now"
Scoups: "Oh well, my kids just did whatever they usually do at home… and also in every public place known to man-kind, so don’t worry too much about it Mr Officer"
The Po-Po: "You guys make a good squad, maybe after your career ends you guys can join the police force, we’ll call you squad number 17"
Dino: "Woahhh I always wanted to be a police officer hyung! I can have guns and shoot people-” *pew pew*
Jeonghan: “No! Gun’s are too dangerous for toddlers!”
The Po-Po: “As a reward, here’s some vouchers to a buffet, please accept it and enjoy your day”
Wonwoo: “I know someone who would be very happy to accept it” *glances over at Mingyu who is currently stuffing free mints into his pockets*
Mingyu: *whispers* “Wonwoo can I borrow your pocket?”
Woozi: “I have an idea, if you want an eternal endless supply of mints, why don’t you just take that empty cardboard box there and sit in it and stay there?”
The Po-Po: “Thanks once again boys!”
Scoups: “No, I should be the one thanking you police officer, with this buffet vouchers I saved almost $130 on expenses for their food!”
The8: “Actually Sir can I have your number, I have something important to discuss with you about, it’s regarding a boy named Kim Mingy-“
Scoups: *covers Minghao’s mouth*
