Job Done for Dino Babers After He Couldn’t Get Job Done
Dino Babers doesn’t get to use his lone skill anymore, namely keeping an undeserved job. It didn’t benefit anyone but himself. He certainly wasn’t proficient at coaching football, which was his ostensible role. The fact each conman needs a mark doesn’t absolve ripoffs.
Syracuse should seek a coach who knows how to do more than avoid a justified termination. Dino was terrible at every aspect. Aside from recruiting, strategy, adjustments both within games and seasons, motivation, game management, discipline, fundamentals, he was qualified.
The only thing worse than a ghastly record is an even ghastlier one in the conference. Study hard, as student-athletes have to put the former aspect to use if they don’t make the pros. Syracuse has had players drafted even less frequently than they’ve won.
Happy memories are easy to bring to mind because they were so rare. Babers had one 10-win season, and that was nearly solely because of Eric Dungey, a prototypically gutsy player who was notably recruited by the previous coach. Syracuse’s Batman saving the day is one way to prove how invaluable quarterback play is.
College is a good place to learn the difference between correlation and causation. Take Syracuse football, which has slid into oblivion since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference. But retaining a subpar coach on a semipermanent basis ensured lousy results, not having to play Virginia Tech. Babers didn’t study then moaned class was too hard.
Recruiting has similarly dipped because of who’s in charge, not where it’s based. Tell Larry Csonka Syracuse can’t recruit, and he’ll put you in a headlock from which there’s no escape regardless of his age. Anyone scared of winter is bound to loaf through practice.
Things can always get worse. Sports really do offer examples for life. Fans are worried with reason that the school could hire an even bigger putz. The lack of funding now that paying student-athletes isn’t something done discretely in envelopes remains a looming issue. But getting defenders to stop jumping offside doesn’t need to be an extra expense.
The hiring will be handled by people who should also be fired. John Wildhack unfortunately didn’t also can himself. He’s performed exactly as you’d figure a cable executive who suddenly became athletic director would. It’s no help to have a chancellor who clearly hates sports. Kent Syverud embodies nerdiness without the intellectual virtues. That’s one more reason why you don’t let a Hoya run your school. If he were a saboteur, he wouldn’t do anything differently.
The value of athletics isn’t limited to fans who’ve connected their self-worth to how well college kids can tackle. Throwing money at a popular extracurricular is ultimately a moneymaker. Games serve as a commercial for colleges. A practical example is the best way to teach business. Intercollegiate athletics confirm the oldest entrepreneurial maxim, namely needing to spend money in order to make it. Syracuse is failing economics. They can’t claim they’re retaking it because they found the course material so fascinating.
The next semester might be as woeful. Fans are rightfully worried the hirers of the next coach will cheap out. It’s not like attending the school is similarly geared toward misers. The university has become the conference’s Malt-O-Meal, which is why you can find them on the bottom shelf of the standings.
Sense doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Even a school using a Groupon can still find a coach who’s aware that timeouts can be used to stop the clock, particularly at the ends of halves. Babers seemed mystified by the metaphysical implications of time not moving forward. But Syracuse’s football potential will be limited as long as they’re unwilling to pay for talent, which sends out the wrong message about professors.
Having to sit next to strangers is better than the alternative. Syracuse has spent the Dino era using plenty of elbow room as the chief selling point. It’s been easy to hear conversations while sitting in the Dome ignoring dull carnage on the field. Syracuse shields rare attendees from jarring excitement found in other college stadiums. By contrast, a ticket entitles you to a respite found in a placid environment in case you want to get a newborn to sleep or work on your screenplay.
Even introverts miss crowds. The stadium's been sparse for what's now long enough to be the new standard. Who would endure the hassle of attending? A formerly impressive program hasn't been good for most of this century. Syracuse is The Simpsons of football.
Separating performance from the person isn’t always necessary. Many anti-Babers crusaders have qualified their unhinged contempt for unmitigated failure by claiming he’s a nice guy. That’s not really the case if it makes anyone feel better about his present relationship with employment. Nice people don’t run longterm scams.
Anyone who’s endured a tiresome press conference after another maddening loss is aware how Babers is arrogant and dismissive, which are qualities that are particularly distasteful for someone who won a single bowl game over two presidential terms. His off-putting attitude is reminiscent of Gary Bettman smirking at a reporter while explaining why his latest screwup should make him beloved by fans.
There are particular humans we hope have their dreams and money cut off. A coaching change does require telling someone to get lost. Getting fired sucks no matter the profession or salary. Babers can take comfort in having made a fortune without earning it.
Enjoying the finale was a nice first step. Fans are no longer in position of being fine with a loss that would make the case for replace a grifting coach. The school has taught all sorts of questionable lessons. Syracuse has either set the standard of retaining someone who didn’t deserve the job or created inspiration for anyone who wants an astounding salary despite being hampered by a lack of ability. They won’t get back millions or eight mostly wasted years. For such spendthrifts, Syracuse sure got little in exchange for paying a clown a fortune.

Syracuse football coaching job pluses, minuses and candidates after Dino Babers
Syracuse needs a new head coach. Dino Babers was fired on Sunday after a loss to Georgia Tech dropped the Orange to 5-6. Babers went 41-55 in eight seasons. The high point was a 10-3 record and top-15 finish in 2018. But the Orange made just one bowl game in the other seven years. The past several seasons have been defined by hot starts and disastrous finishes. The 2021 team started 3-1 but…

High school football coach: Get kids to degrees
After 130 wins, Morse High School football coach and athletic director Tracy McNair has made an impact in the San Diego sports world.
But what you can’t put a number on is the sheer amount of lives he has changed along the way. Brandon Stone sat down with the longtime southeast San Diego resident to learn more about the journey that made the man.
Always charting the course is the mark of a coach — but in Tracy McNair’s world, so much more.
“Right now, I think more than anything else, [my role] is mentor, father, coach, teacher, athletic administrator, babysitter, car driver,” McNair said. “I probably can’t put it on a resume, but what you see is what you get.”
“Sitting here in this classroom brings back memories of times when I didn’t have that teacher,” McNair continued. “There were times in class where the teacher told me, ‘You won’t make it to see 21.’ But now I’m 52.”
And still going strong running Morse High, the model of hard work was set long ago through family.
“Me being a young kid, not understanding all of the stuff that my grandma went through,” McNair said. “She only had one hand that only had two fingers on it. When she was a minor, she was pushed into a fire as she was the maid of a family. And at that time, her fingers melted together. She’d tell us, through all she did with that one hand, that hard work pays off. Perseverance will always pay off.”
He took that lesson first to Crawford High School, then back to the school he graduated from — taking the baton from his legendary head coach, a five-time CIF champion.
“A lot of people want to say they want to go to the NFL. That was never my focus,” McNair said. “My focus was I wanted to be just like [John Shacklett]. I wanted to be at Morse. I wanted to be a head coach. I wanted to be an athletic director. I wanted to affect kids’ lives and affect change within my own community.”
Stone asked McNair how much it changes the perspective to be able to learn from someone that looks like them and understands what they went through.
“I think the biggest attribute of all that is I went to Morse,” McNair said. “I can see these families and these kids on a day-to-day basis walking through their own community. I know their parents. I know their grandparents.”
A blessing paid back in full in 2018, when three old teammates — David Dunn at Lincoln, Charles James at San Diego and Coach McNair — made that same CIF history.
“One of the most wonderful things I’ve ever seen in my life is to have three Morse Tigers go to CIF at the same time. And then all of us win CIF,” McNair said.
The Morse name continues to be strong to this day. When San Diego State University hired their new coach, Sean Lewis, he credited a Morse alum, Dino Babers, as a mentor to him as he was learning the college game. Lewis was an assistant to Babers at three different stops in the past decade.
“So what is my job as a coach? Get kids to degrees,” McNair said. “Because 20 years from now, ain’t nobody gonna care who won the CIF, except for us as adults. Those kids want to see those degrees. Those parents want to see those degrees.” *Reposted article from Fox 5 by Brandon Stone on February 3, 2024

2022 ACC Coaching Power Rankings
It’s that time of year again. We’re looking at each head coach and seeing how he stacks up against his peers across each league. We always start alphabetically with the ACC. Here’s a link to last year’s rankings if you want to compare.
Oh yeah and Notre Dame is also here because I have no good place to put the Irish.
-
We saw several head coaches cycle through the league this season, so there will be some upheaval in the rankings. The ACC remains one of the weakest Power 5 conferences, there is always some fluctuations going on in the league.
15. Marcus Freeman
Record at Notre Dame: 0-1
Movement: N/A
Marcus Freeman was brought in under Brian Kelly just last year as Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator. It’s quite the vote of confidence to see Freeman succeed Kelly so soon. Time will tell what Freeman will bring to the job, but he’s inherited quite the machine from Kelly.
14. Mike Elko
Record at Duke: N/A
Movement: N/A
Mike Elko comes to Duke via Texas A&M, where he served as Jimbo Fisher’s DC for the past four seasons. Elko is a step removed from Marcus Freeman, having served as Notre Dame DC under Kelly in 2017, though he came up with Dave Clawson at Bowling Green and Wake Forest. It’s a good pedigree, can it turn things around in Durham?
13. Brent Pry
Record at Virginia Tech: N/A
Movement: N/A
Brent Pry was James Franklin’s longtime DC at Penn State and Vanderbilt, a partnership dating all the way back to 2011. Pry inherits a Virginia Tech program desperate to reclaim their lost glory. They’re still in a strong position to rebound to Frank Beamer’s lofty heights if the right guy can come through Blacksburg. Let’s see if Pry is the man.
12. Tony Elliott
Record at Virginia: N/A
Movement: N/A
Our last brand new coach is Tony Elliott, who comes to Virginia via Clemson. Elliott has spent 10 years in Dabo’s program, picking up knowledge he’ll be eager to transmit to his new squad.
11. Geoff Collins
Record at Georgia Tech: 9-25 Overall Record: 24-35
Movement: Up 4 spots
It isn’t going well. Geoff Collins moved up 4 spots on the list but that’s because four guys ahead of him left their jobs and the new hires are all brand new head coaches. The rebuild is off to a horrible start. The Yellow Jackets were supposed to be improving by now, but Georgia Tech looks as bad as they ever have under Collins. I don’t think he’s going to be in Atlanta very long unless GA Tech starts winning immediately.
10. Jeff Hafley
Record at Boston College: 12-11
Movement: Up 3 spots
Boston College continues to show signs of life under Hafley. The Eagles were a bit inconsistent in 2022, but there seems to be room to grow.
9. Mike Norvell
Record at Florida State: 8-13 Overall Record: 46-28
Movement: Up 5 spots
It has been a weird half-decade for Florida State. The Seminoles have been kicked and pushed around in a way we’re not used to seeing. Still, improvement is improvement and FSU started looking like they’d found their footing towards the end of the year. The results Florida State fans want to see still haven’t come. Norvell won’t move higher up this list if they don’t start bowling right now.
8. Mario Cristobal
Record at Miami FL: 0-0 Overall Record: 62-60
Movement: N/A
Miami was able to land their white whale when they finally poached native son Mario Cristobal from Oregon. Cristobal is a Hurricane diehard and he’s going to put his all into making sure The U sees its third act. Whether he can achieve this lofty goal is hard to say, but he did good work in Eugene. He led the Ducks to two PAC-12 championships and another North Division title in 2021.
7. Dino Babers
Record at Syracuse: 29-43 Overall Record: 66-59
Movement: Up 4 spots
Sometimes outlasting guys gets you pretty high up the list. Dino Babers did turn Syracuse around a bit in 2022, they won 5 games as opposed to just 1 in 2021. Whether Babers can once again take the Orange to a bowl and beyond is up for debate. The 10 win season in 2018 is feeling like a long time ago.
6. Scott Satterfield
Record at Louisville: 18-19 Overall Record: 69-43
Movement: Up 4 spots
It’s actually pretty impressive to move up this high when your team hasn’t done all that well with you at the helm. Once again, I blame coaching turnover in the conference. Satterfield also alienated most of the Louisville program when it became clear he tried to leave, so I don’t know how long he’ll stick around, especially with a .500 record. At the moment I think the Cardinals are biding their time until his buyout is cheaper.
5. Dave Doeren
Record at NC State: 64-49 Overall Record: 87-53
Movement: Down 1 spot
Ok, now that we’re in the top 5 the competition starts to heat up. Dave Doeren actually moves down in the rankings despite NC State putting up an impressive 9-3 record. That’s the breaks when you’ve become one of the top coaches in a power conference. The Wolf Pack came very close to landing their first ever division title, and things are as wide open as possible for them to go for the gold this year.
4. Pat Narduzzi
Record at Pittsburgh: 53-37 Division Titles: 2 (2018, 2021) Conference Titles: 1 (2021)
Movement: Up 5 spots
It was a down year for Clemson, so somebody was going to break through, but few would have guessed it was going to be Pitt. The Panthers came out of nowhere to claim their first ever ACC Championship. Narduzzi slowly built Pittsburgh back into a contender. We’ll see if he can keep them at that level, but the Pitt program continues to slowly trend upwards.
3. Dave Clawson
Record at Wake Forest: 51-48 Overall Record: 141-127 Division Titles: 1 (2021)
Movement: Up 2 spots
It really shouldn’t be possible to do this well at Wake Forest. Rebuild expert Dave Clawson has returned the lowly Demon Deacons back to football prominence. Wake had an outstanding 11-3 season last year. While it’s unrealistic to expect to see that kind of output every season, Clawson is certainly the man to keep Wake Forest as competitive as they can be. This is literally the best football Wake has ever played, they can’t fire this guy.
2. Mack Brown
Record at North Carolina: 90-63-1 Overall Record: 265-139-1 National Championships: 1 (2005)
Movement: Up 1 spot
Mack Brown moves up one spot thanks to Brian Kelly’s departure. It was supposed to be a better 2021 season than 6-7 for North Carolina. Does Mack still have the magic? We’ll see, UNC is at least recruiting like they’re aiming to win championships. Mack knows that’s half the battle.
1. Dabo Swinney
Record at Clemson: 150-36 Division Championships: 8 (2009, 2011-12, 2015-2019) Conference Championships: 7 (2011, 2015-2020) National Championships: 2 (2016, 2018)
Movement: same
Yeah I mean he’s not going to move down just because Clemson didn’t win the ACC this year. Dabo Swinney is one of the most accomplished coaches in college football and most of the other guys on this list don’t even come close to sniffing Swinney’s achievements. Clemson remains the odds-on favorite to win the ACC every year.

RB Michael Carter added 138 yards of total offense for UNC, which opened the season with an ACC win for the first time since beating Clemson 45-0 in 1996 from Brown's first stint as coach. . This was Syracuse's first visit to Chapel Hill since joining the ACC before the 2013-14 season. The Orange's last trip here was in 2003. . The 202 yards were the fewest allowed by UNC against an ACC opponents since giving up 198 to Boston College in 2009. ''The bottom line is they had a convincing win over us,'' Syracuse Orange coach Dino Babers said.

One Team Loses Twice During Dueling Syracuse, Buffalo Bills Games
What are the chances your NFL team and alma mater play on the same Thursday? If you’re me, it’s 100 percent. Events sometimes line up, though rarely in the way you’d wish. The Buffalo Bills playing at the same time as Syracuse University’s varsity football side created a viewing dilemma at the oddest time. Having one team scheduled on an unlikely football night wasn’t enough. The other helped by not trying particularly hard.
Half of those I cheered for competed. The college side helpfully embarrassed itself to the point where former players turned on the coach, which made settling on one broadcast easier. Syracuse played like community college might be more its speed, which I hope doesn’t devalue my degree.
I played remote roulette. Orange lost. The channel settled naturally on the team which played through part of the second half, not the one that quit before kickoff. I was more disciplined about studying on Friday nights than present students are while playing an extracurricular.
In marginally more impressive results, the Bills won despite not meeting their honor roll potential. Present host and commercial darling Ryan Fitzpatrick should’ve stayed after the game in his adopted hometown to begin his career as offensive coordinator. They’ll wave the mandatory shirt requirement in the box.
Listening to fans seems like an unwise course. But it beats Ken Dorsey listening to himself. Everyone in the stands knows the quarterback running enables everything else. Second place in the 50/50 raffle should get to be offensive coordinator. The franchise should stop running whatever contest Dorsey won to get his job.
Josh deciding to be Josh fittingly led to the first touchdown. A dash didn’t seem to be the call, which means they won without Dorsey’s counsel. The real coordinator stands behind center and does as he pleases, which is fine if it just happens to be the right thing. Trusting workers to discern proper reactions to conditions leads to way more productivity than micromanaging.
The first led to the second. Josh’s threat to dash scared the defender tasked personally with stopping him. He exposed the spy’s identity, who was stuck between admitting his was caught and seeking shelter. The threat for a quarterback sneak ruined Tampa’s attempt at intrigue. As with Hacksaw Jim Duggan’s 2x4, you just have to make them think you might use it.
Staying in shotgun to start the second quarter reflects how dedication may not be admirable. Seeing the formation fail at the goal line to end the first 15 minutes meant a commercial break to ponder errors. Get behind getting behind center. Sometime, the obvious thing is the best course of action. If you interview Buzz Aldrin, you really should ask about the Moon.
Fans became even more appreciative of the quarterback if you thought that wasn’t possible. Josh Allen’s visit to the medical tent thankfully was over as quickly as my visits to a camping tent. A few of our most apprehensive seconds showed he’s even more valuable than realized.
Everyone also adores Stefon Diggs, which is why it’s imperative that he not gain every yard himself. Using options like Gabe Davis and Khalil Shakir opens up even more ground for someone who obtains quite a bit on his own. Spreading the ball makes life easier for Buffalo’s undisputed top option, as defenses have to focus on routes other than his both during games and practices.
Noticing who’s not there is telling. Infamous underachiever Josh Norman left his 87th birthday party to join the Bills and was still a better option than Kaiir Elam. Brandon Beane couldn’t even sell the bust at the trade deadline with a spiel about needing a fresh start.
Each respective club would do better with other coaches. Dino Babers’s only skill is keeping an undeserved job. As for a milder case of incompetence, Sean McDermott has a habit of keeping games competitive. Growing timid at the time he should go bold keeps him from true success. The league wants parity, but that doesn’t mean the Bills must help pursue the goal.
Scoring seven points in the second half reflects wasted potential. The teachers are the underachievers, not the students. It’s human nature to back off. And it’s a coach’s job to prevent against same nature. There’s nothing normal about accelerating at virtually superhuman speeds into collisions, yet that happens every play for well-led squads.
A quarterback getting it done contrasted with a coach who should be done. The Bills succeeded despite having a short week to prepare while Syracuse failed despite having a long one.
Making it thrilling through the end was a nice way to extend excitement, I guess. Some people might have felt confident that a foe couldn’t travel 80 yards in 21 seconds. But some people aren’t Bills fans, who have learned to not take anything for granted in life or football.
This game is not entirely fun. There are bound to be some ups and downs. You may have noticed life features shockingly more of the latter, which is baffling simply from the perspective of thinking things surely leveling out. Other fanbases have experienced joy at our expense. It’s practically school policy. As for the more thoroughly pro level, the Bills are finally winning somewhat frequently despite their best efforts.
Even improving times could be better. Syracuse football is having a tough century, and a coach who’s done for the program what the Hindenburg did for blimp safety is not going to learn how the game works during his eighth season.
By contrast, the Bills might appear to be in the midst of a similar run if you choose a random season in it. Their present winning record is abnormal over time. A high percentage of seasons with a low percentage of wins would’ve been avoidable if coaches noticed players’ strengths. Failing that, Josh will have to keep winning by ignoring their to-do list.

Syracuse Decides on Future of Head Football Coach Dino Babers, per Report
Syracuse fired football coach Dino Babers on Sunday after eight years with the program, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported. The team is planning to name tight ends coach Nunzio Campanile the interim coach for the remainder of the season. He previously acted as interim coach at Rutgers in 2019. The Orange fell to 5–6 on Saturday following their 31–22 loss to Georgia Tech. The team started out the season…

ZOMBIE BIKE RIDE / CRZBS
Last night was the final evening of Gombay. I did not go out. It poured heavy several times during the evening. I hope it did not disrupt Goombay too much.
Today, the beginning of Fantasy Fest itself. Shed your clothes and join in!
Joking.
Tonight at 6, the Zombie Bike Ride. Thousands will participate. Riders costumed and made up. Some scary weird. Bikes decorated, also.
Bicycles big in Key West. Sole means of transportation for many.
Though not an official part of Fantasy Fest, Kate Miano’s Gardens from 5:30-8:00. Kate’s sunday evening event has become a Key West tradition.
Entertaining this evening are the CRZBs. Supposed to be excellent. A jazz ensemble. The only player I know is Skipper Kripitz. An excellent drummer and an extremely fine person.
Sunday at the Gardens always a fun time.
My day yesterday was watching the Syracuse/Miami game. Syracuse lost 27-19. A different play result here or there, the score could have been reversed.
Syracuse played poorly in the first half. Dungey had nothing working for him. His second half a beauty, however!
Syracuse’s defense excellent.
If I had to pick one item that contributed big time to Miami’s victory, it was their speed. Fast off the line. It took almost all of the first half for Syracuse to accommodate.
Syracuse has gained momentum as the season has worn on. They will make a bowl this year. Next year, watch out! Dungey back!
King and Queen of Fantasy Fest have been identified. King is “Saint Paul” Murphy. Queen, Destiny Montgomery.
I know Destiny. Sings often with the Dueling Bartenders. A lovely young lady with a magnificent voice!
Several years ago, a local group worked hard to bring a film festival to Key West. They succeeded. This year’s Key West Film Festival is scheduled for November 15-18. Thirty films will be shown.
This day in 1962, President John Kennedy announced he had ordered a blockade of Cuba in response to Soviet missiles being installed in Cuba. Kennedy warned the U.S. was ready to retaliate if any missiles were launched.
The Cuban missile crisis was upon us. The crisis continued for six days. A nuclear war was imminent. no question about it. Either the Soviet Union backed off and removed them or a nuclear war would occur.
Naval war vessels from both sides were face to face in the waters between Key West and Cuba.
Both sides came to an agreement and war was avoided.
It was an emotional moment to watch on TV the Russian vessels turning around to return to Russia.
Feelings were high. The situation tense. What is happening presently with North Korea kid stuff in comparison. Though no less serious.
Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev a nut. Similar to Trump, far worse.
Key West was in the middle of the fracas. Artillery guns were erected on Smathers and other beaches pointing towards Cuba. Military personnel were transported quickly and in large numbers to Key West.
Khrushchev blinked. Fortunate for everyone. Kennedy had met the enemy and beat him.
Some things are nor readily revealed to us via the media. An example is the Executive Order Trump signed this past week recalling 1,000 retired pilots to active duty.
We are fighting in so many places that we have an insufficient military personnel. Another example is that the military has lowered its standards for successful enlistment. The U.S. will now accept applicants who have a marijuana history.
For several years, I have suggested a return to the draft or mandatory military time following high school graduation.
I believe we would be in fewer wars if more families were directly involved. A President and Congress would be reluctant to engage in new wars if the people back home had a direct personal interest in those fighting.
Still waiting on Irma and Me. I had a desire for strawberry ice cream at 3 this morning!
Enjoy your Sunday!

Sunilytics Pre-Season Top 30: #17 Syracuse Orangemen
Sunilytics Pre-Season Top 30: #17 Syracuse Orangemen
Dino Babers is another one of fave coaches. He has been building the Orange back to relevance over the last three years with big steps on both offense and defense which culminated in a 10 win season for them last year. Granted it was a terrible year for the ACC as it was basically Clemson and then everyone else, but still, a 10 win season is nothing to scoff at. The trick for Babers this year…

2021 ACC Coaching Power Rankings
Hey everybody, I’m hoping to finish one more project before the season begins. The Coaching Power Rankings show where each head man stands in relation to his peers, and it usually is a good barometer on the health of the program itself.
Let’s see where each man stands.
The rankings from last year can be found here.
-
The ACC saw no coaching turnover in the tumultuous 2020 season. The league continues to exist in a weird two tier system where Clemson lords over the rest of the league.
Notre Dame isn’t in a conference so they count as an ACC team for our purposes.
-
15. Geoff Collins
Record at Georgia Tech: 6-16 Overall Record: 21-26
Movement: Down 1 spot
I know Georgia Tech is transitioning away from the triple option and that’s gonna take time, but they’ve been bad so Collins is gonna stay at the bottom here until the Yellow Jackets show improvement.
-
14. Mike Norvell
Record at Florida State: 3-6 Overall Record: 41-24
Movement: Down 3 spots
Florida State is also in the tank in the same way that Georgia Tech is. It’s gonna take time, let’s hope the Seminoles give it to him.
-
13. Jeff Hafley
Record at Boston College: 6-5
Movement: Up 2 spots
Hey that’s a pretty good first season up in Chestnut Hill. Jeff Hafley has BC fans quietly optimistic that the Eagles can find some consistency.
-
12. Manny Diaz
Record at Miami: 14-10
Movement: Up 1 spot
Miami improved to an 8-3 record in Manny Diaz’s second season as head coach. The Hurricanes supposedly poised for a breakout season, we’ll see just how high Diaz can climb if he has the Hurricanes running right.

11. Dino Babers
Record at Syracuse: 24-36 Overall Record: 61-52
Movement: Down 1 spot
Man the shine is really coming off Dino Baber’s tenure at Syracuse. That 10 win season in 2018 is suddenly feeling very far away. The Orange are coming off a dreadful 1-11 record and if Syracuse doesn’t pick themselves off the mat it will definitely result in Babers’ ousting.
-
10. Scott Satterfield
Record at Louisville: 12-12 Overall Record: 63-36
Movement: Down 5 spots
A promising 8-5 record in 2019 turned into a 4-7 disaster of a season in 2020. The shine has apparently worn off the Scott Satterfield era as the head coach has feuded with the administration and looked at other jobs.
-
9. Pat Narduzzi
Record at Pittsburgh: 42-34 Division Championships: 1 (2018)
Movement: Up 3 spots
Pat Narduzzi and Pittsburgh didn’t exactly have a great 2020, but the Panthers’ did prove themselves more consistent than many of their conference-mates, pulling Naduzzi out of the basement of our rankings. I’m still not sure if this guy has a ceiling higher than 8-5, but if Pitt is happy with that then things are exactly the way they should be.
-
8. David Cutcliffe
Record at Duke: 74-88 Overall Record: 118-117 Division Championships: 1 (2013)
Movement: Down 1 spots
It is sad to see a coach as good as Cutcliffe flounder in the past few years as Duke slides back into irrelevance. The Blue Devils went an abysmal 2-9 last year and don’t seem to be on the right path anymore.
-
7. Justin Fuente
Record at Virginia Tech: 38-26 Overall Record: 64-49 Division Championships: 1 (2016)
Movement: Up 2 spots
Justin Fuente moves up only because many other coaches around him have performed worse. Virginia Tech has little patience for a 5-6 record. The division title in 2016 is a full recruiting cycle in the past and Justin Fuente is definitely on the hot seat.
-
6. Bronco Mendenhall
Record at Virginia: 30-32 Overall Record: 129-75 Division Championships: 1 (2019)
Movement: Same
Virginia went 5-5 so there really isn’t much to say. The Cavaliers still have full confidence in Bronco Mendenhall to more regularly contend in the ACC Coastal, even if the division seems to be getting more stratified.
-
5. Dave Clawson
Record at Wake Forest: 40-45 Overall Record: 130-124
Movement: Down 1 spot
Wake wasn’t that bad of a team last year based on the metrics, but they sure lost games like a bad team. Dave Clawson still definitely seems like the man to lead the Demon Deacons, I’m confident that the administration is still behind him 100%.
-
4. Dave Doeren
Record at NC State: 55-46 Overall Record: 78-50
Movement: Up 4 spots
NC State turned things around in 2020, rebounding from a 4-8 season the year before to go 8-4. The Wolfpack want to do better and seem frustrated by Doeren’s inability to break past the 9 win threshold. Time will tell if they keep him on, I’m not sure if he can take them into double digit win territory.
-
3. Mack Brown
Record at North Carolina: 84-56-1 Record Overall: 259-132-1 National Championships: 1 (2005)*
*with Texas
Movement: Same
North Carolina had the surprise showing for 2020 in the ACC. The Tar Heels finished third in the league with an 8-3 record and were given a berth to the Orange Bowl where they lost to Texas A&M. UNC seems to be headed down the right path as momentum and enthusiasm is building in Chapel Hill.
-
2. Brian Kelly
Record at Notre Dame: 102-39 Overall Record: 273-96-2 Division Championships: 1 (2020)
Movement: Same
In Notre Dame’s first ever year in a football conference, the Fighting Irish won the ACC with a perfect 9-0 record. Never mind that ND then lost to Clemson in the ACC Championship Game then got pantsed by Alabama in the Playoff. Things remain stable for the Irish under Kelly’s direction. Notre Dame remains a force in the college football world and regularly contends for the Playoff, they just can’t seem to rise to the level to actually win the thing.
-
1. Dabo Swinney
Record at Clemson: 140-33 Division Championships: 9 (2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) Conference Championships: 6 (2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020) National Championships: 2 (2016, 2018)
Movement: Same
Dabo Swinney remains without a doubt the best coach in the ACC. Clemson claimed their sixth consecutive league title and their sixth consecutive Playoff berth. Life is good for the Tigers, whose position in the ACC remains completely unchallenged by the competition.
