However this yr, she seen design somewhat in a different way; it was about extra than simply jewel-toned mosaic tiles and palm fronds organized simply so. “Persons are spending much more time at house then they’re used to,” she mentioned. “When you’re in the identical house day in and time out, little by little, you begin to understand how a lot shifting the power in your house and placing some effort and love into creating a house that works for you’ll be able to actually be a life-changing endeavor. “What it comes all the way down to, is de facto having the ability to perceive, then channel what it’s that lights you up and lifts you up.” In October, Goal tapped Ms. Blakeney as a House Type Professional, a task through which she’ll provide seasonal house refresher suggestions. In April, she’ll debut her third guide, “Jungalow: Beautify Wild,” which follows her 2015 greatest vendor, “The New Bohemians” and its 2017 companion, “The New Bohemians Handbook.” “It’s somewhat bit memoir-y and somewhat bit retrospective-y,” she mentioned of the brand new guide, which reveals how her ancestry and worldwide travels have knowledgeable her fashion, and guides readers towards taking an analogous autobiographical method to adorning. We spoke to Ms. Blakeney in early December, as she started her subsequent design venture: making over her “Jungalow by the Mountain,” a Northeast Los Angeles Spanish-style home that she and her household will quickly name house. Interviews are performed by way of e-mail, textual content and telephone, then condensed and edited. Monday 6 a.m. Get up, feed Couscous the kitty, then set my intentions for the day, a psychological train the place I channel the kind of power I’m attempting to name in for the day. 7 a.m. Soak within the Jacuzzi, then take an outside bathe whereas I hearken to the morning information. It’s such a cleaning expertise, with the sunshine and the recent air, that I really feel actually clear and energized afterward. 8 a.m. Bike with my 9-year-old daughter, Ida, to Spoke Bicycle Cafe to get espresso and pastries to deliver house for breakfast. 9:30 a.m. Over Zoom, I overview the completed set design for an upcoming photograph shoot. It’s a bed room setup for a group we’re launching in June. My notes are: “Extra crops, please. That’s the vibe!” Then, I end designing specs for a brand new lamp assortment and ship them off to the manufacturing unit. 12:30 p.m. Meet up with my licensing agent. Once I take telephone calls that don’t require me sitting in entrance of the pc, I like strolling conferences. They permit me to stretch my legs whereas additionally noticing the small adjustments in my neighborhood. “Look, the persimmon tree is fruiting! The maple tree’s leaves had been yellow final week, now they’re pink …” Observing nature fuels my creativity. 2 p.m. I get down on some yummy butternut squash soup my husband, Jason, cooked for lunch, then I assist Ida out with one in every of her distant studying assignments for varsity. Estamos practicando español. 4:15 p.m. Type and edit pictures for my weblog and social media shares that includes the “earlier than” pictures of our new house. We closed final week! 5 p.m. I’m going over samples, prop choice and supply dates for a product shoot with my venture supervisor. We’ll be capturing a front room, bed room and toilet, all with merchandise that we designed. Coordinating pattern deliveries throughout Covid is very difficult as a result of we’re not in our studio often and supply schedules are unpredictable. 7 p.m. End and publish my newest weblog submit. For about eight years, I blogged each single day. I wouldn’t overthink issues; I simply posted about something that caught my eye. A lot of that occurs on Instagram now, so I solely weblog when I’ve an extended story to inform, or a significant milestone to share. Enterprise & Financial system Up to date  Dec. 23, 2020, 8:59 a.m. ET 8 p.m. I begin the nighttime routine with Ida — wash up, brush tooth, learn tales after which a fast “lie down with me.” 9 p.m. Watch “Curb Your Enthusiasm” reruns whereas pinning home concepts on Pinterest. I additionally pay shut consideration to how and the place the pure mild comes into the totally different rooms, and map out the angles for our subsequent Goal photograph shoot. Midday Contact base with my Jungalow crew. I like utilizing Slack as a result of it simulates “chatting within the workplace” a bit greater than e-mail and it’s simple to get caught up with what’s occurring unexpectedly. The most recent information is that there are many delivery delays. Textiles that had been supposed to come back in from India in time for the vacations gained’t make it in time, so we’ll need to pivot and launch them in spring 2021. 3 p.m. I work with our companions at Loloi Rugs on the collaboration app Asana to brainstorm new rug design concepts. I are inclined to method rug design conceptually and take into consideration colours and patterns, whereas they often begin with the rug’s building. 4:30 p.m. Undergo pictures from my journey to India final February, and pull pure tie-dye samples from the manufacturing unit to get concepts for bedding designs we’re engaged on for 2022. 5:30 p.m. Contact base with our sourcing crew to debate sustainability efforts. We’re testing other ways to ship ceramics with out utilizing Styrofoam. To this point, we’ve struggled to discover a extra eco-friendly answer that retains the ceramics secure that the factories can undertake at scale. We resolve to look into compostable egg-carton containers. Wednesday 10 a.m. Meet the gardeners on the new home to stroll by way of new backyard techniques. 11 a.m. Again at house, I’ve a Zoom assembly to stroll by way of images for a summer time 2021 product launch. It appears to be like nice; simply the correct amount of jungaliciousness. Usually, I’d direct the photographs in particular person, however we’re doing it remotely due to Covid. 1 p.m. Eat a late breakfast burrito whereas I submit my guide cowl divulge to Instagram. Then I reply to feedback, and examine my DMs and e-mail. Maintaining with that is getting more durable. I’m questioning if I’ll need to delegate a few of it to a crew member within the coming months. 2 p.m. Month-to-month meetup with our e-commerce crew to deal with buyer expertise points. Plenty of UPS delivery delays are creating difficulties for our small crew. We focus on methods to announce delays on the positioning to maintain clients knowledgeable and completely happy. 3:30 p.m. Approve closing web site and catalog layouts for the brand new Justina x Loloi collections which can be about to launch. One of many collections is called “Chalos,” after my dad, so I textual content him to share the pics. He’s thrilled. 4 p.m. I overview influencer packages for the January launch of a brand new collaboration with a private care model. It’s at all times tough to resolve what to ship to influencers. Since I’m on the receiving finish of those sorts of packages typically, I’m extra-sensitive about sending issues that shall be enjoyable and thrilling. 5 p.m. Work on some sketches for a brand new vase and planter line for fall 2021. Thursday 9 a.m. Whew! Plenty of conferences right this moment. Thursdays are at all times like this. I begin off with a Jungalow management assembly on Google Hangouts. One giant focus is to regulate away from me being a degree particular person for your entire crew. 11:30 a.m. My household goes to get drive-through Covid checks at Dodgers Stadium. We accomplish that periodically as a result of we’re in a pod with our mother and father, who’re high-risk. The strains are further lengthy due to the most recent surge, so I reply emails and atone for social media whereas we wait. 2 p.m. The entire Jungalow crew has our weekly employees assembly to see how everyone seems to be doing, examine in on work-life steadiness, and brainstorm new concepts. Right now, now we have a couple of new members of the crew, so we began by taking persona checks. 3:15 p.m. The advertising crew presents particulars for our first Jungalow Vacation Treasure Hunt. We’re hiding clues across the web site — then our publication subscribers can observe them to win prizes. Determining the logistics has been a bit difficult, however we’re all actually excited to attempt one thing out-of-the-box. Experimentation is my love language. 4:15 p.m. Run all the way down to the Jungalow studio, a block away from my home, to overview a brand new pattern of a canister within the form of a girl. Then, I head again house to begin peeling and grating potatoes so I can prepare dinner latkes with Ida for the primary night time of Hanukkah. Friday 9:30 a.m. I begin my day with some hand-drawing. I attempt to attract or paint on daily basis for about half-hour as a artistic warm-up, and it’s a pleasant method to have private artistic time offscreen. This week, it’s been robust to slot in due to the entire conferences. 10:30 a.m. Time for the sexual harassment coaching all of us should take, in accordance with California regulation. I’m really shocked that it’s each entertaining and informative. There are such a lot of issues to be careful for, particularly in an organization like this, the place we might be very pleasant and accustomed to each other. 2 p.m. I head again to the brand new home, the place I’m assembly the management crew; it’s the primary time the three of us have seen one another in actual life in eight months. We’re masked outdoors on the patio, discussing our sustainability and social media efforts. We find yourself chatting and hanging out greater than getting any enterprise carried out. 3:30 p.m. My husband cuts a gap within the new kitchen’s drop ceiling to see if there are fairly beams hiding beneath. There are. Woohoo! I seize the reveal for social media, then sketch ground plans for the kitchen rework. We start assembly with contractors subsequent week. 4:30 p.m. On the drive house, I squeeze in some extra work. I present a closing spherical of suggestions on the rugs, then I focus on mattress shams with our design supervisor. 6 p.m. I mild night time two of the Hanukkah candles, then hop within the Jacuzzi with my fam. This yr has been so robust and such an emotional curler coaster, and I take a minute to simply be within the second and really feel immense gratitude. Beautiful Kitchen Design Ideas
Tumblr media
welcome to my kitchen follow me a lot of you have been asking about this kitchen and I wanted to make sure and show you all the wonderful details and share with you. some of my greatest secrets one of the important considerations in your kitchen is do you want to have a television or not depends on how your family lives and our family. we like to have it on Sundays for football or maybe sometimes when we're doing cooking shows and trying to emulate some of the best cooks in the world. now when we decided to do this kitchen the question was how we can incorporate a television and so that. It doesn't look too television if that makes any sense now luckily I had chosen a black lacquer cabinet color which really helped in camouflaging this television. So if you can see here I've got my  TV and I sort of had it designed flush against the cabinet. we created a box right and what's great about this is that you can sort of twist it no matter where you are so if you're in the kitchen cooking by the stove you can look at the television if you're in the family room behind get the television you can certainly turn it around and watch from there even though. We have a television in the family room but you never know when two people want to watch different programs all we did was put a swivel arm behind the television really a not very difficult strategy and then camouflaged. It with all of its cables behind the television screen you ever you know Direct TV box here and we literally just pull it in and pull it out and swivel. It any which way we want when we're done with the TV we put it back in and we pretend like there's no TV in this kitchen is there.
Another consideration in any kitchen is how you're  wash your dishes obviously everyone wants and needs and loves a dishwasher but the question is do you need one or can you potentially. It too in this particular kitchen I definitely needed two dishwashers why because I don't like to see dishes in the sink ever so in order to avoid having to empty the dishwasher and put it back in and working really hard. All the time I can have the ability to hide the dirty dishes obviously while they're being filled in one and then if I already have a clean one and I don't feel like I'm paying it right away. I have a little bit more time here's a second dishwasher again it's right next to the sink for easy loading and unloading you open it up you've got all of your dials inside.
so it's not a cluttered look you close it again minimal lead and you can always have a fresh lovely kitchen in case anybody pops over one of the biggest questions. I get in design is to marble or not to marble a kitchen and I can tell you that the answers are going to vary but the important thing is what is it that you like best and how again are you going to be living in your kitchen are you someone that's going to protect the counters. When you're cutting up lemon or are you just all over the place and ready to cook and make a mess so in this particular case I have to have marble 4b marble is one of the most beautiful materials in the world and I wanted to showcase. It in the kitchen and I knew that I was going to be careful I knew that I was going to have cutting tools that I was going to place on top of the marble to be careful with it and I honestly think that it makes a really beautiful statement. Now with that said in the last couple of years there really has been a very big shift in manmade materials and these materials coming slab formats which they didn't used to and they really look almost real. So you could have both really here's a trick that I have found if you don't want to get your marble too messed up and you're be having a busy day in the kitchen or maybe you're preparing for a dinner party just bring out your drawer liner.
now this is my little secret I put this out onto the counter where I know there's  be a lot of activity it's white it's sort of camouflages into the island and I can bring a bunch of groceries up here. I can have you know I can cut all my vegetables I can unload and reload the refrigerator clean the refrigerator this way my marble is protected and it actually doesn't look so bad one big consideration in any kitchen is how you're gonna do your ventilation. so as you know you're required to have a vent in every kitchen and in this particular kitchen I wanted to make sure and do something that wasn't so ubiquitous what did I want I wanted something that nobody had that nobody had done before I considered you know maybe putting one of those fancy hoods. But it looked too industrial for this kitchen I considered perhaps building a cabinet but it looked too stifling and so it occurred to me that if I want something area nice why don't I just go ahead and mirror it so I didn't want to put on a traditional mirror. I was too afraid that it would be very heavy and my fall break becomes some kind of hazard so what I decided to do was find some type of reflective surface that was mirror like without it being a mirror and luckily I found out that aircrafts actually don't use real mirrors for obvious reasons due to weight constrictions and use. what is called plexi light so this in fact is a mirror it's a reflective surface that mimics a mirror and it's extremely light one of my favorite things in this kitchen. Actually are these pendant lights the reason I love them is that I actually hand-drew them and have them made specifically for this kitchen I didn't like a lot of the chandeliers that have the strings that are hanging down.
I wanted it to be clean I wanted to be a brass tube and I had actually found ones that were very similar to this but were extremely expensive cost prohibitive. so I decided that I could have a meet for a fraction of the what's also wonderful about this chandeliers is that you do not have to chain them the ones that I did see had glass everywhere and they were gorgeous but it does take a little bit of time to make sure that the dust is always off of them but in this case I have to admit that I do have a little bit of a India habit and the disease has gotten progressively worse. If you happen to have it trying to have it such as the one I have which great is you want to display them you want to display them not only for yourself but for your guests to see what beautiful India you've collected over the years so I built this specifically this cabinet with glass mirror so that it would feel light and then you could see through it and have displayed all of my India from all of the different moments in my life. These I actually got from France in the little town of dommage that sells them and I just love collecting them I find little things at estate sales that are complementary to the India and so I pair them together and as you can see I have different colors different shades.
I've got a burgundy moment here if I'm having you know more of a festive party with matching soup bowls or I have a wedding present India here which I got and they're actually Japanese plates that are really beautifully well-made by Noritake and I got these my wedding and I do like to again incorporate different things that I find over the years that would match these are they look great with my Japanese India I realize there's a lot of India here but do you think I should maybe get one more set of India it's so comment below again organizing your kitchen is really important want to have things at hand do built-ins are great you can pull this out grab whatever you need you're miel your rice your flour and you're ready to go on another segment we're going to talk more in depth about how to organize your cabinet.
Because that's of course another specialty of mine because I love organization but I did want to show you one last thing that I think is very interesting and actually very inexpensive to do so if you like to bake which I do right next to your stove you want to be able to mix your good so one of the greatest ways of doing that is to bring out your mixer without again breaking your back. so I have this wonderful ability to do that BAM right here in the kitchen you have to think about these things in advance these inserts are very easy to buy and install in any cabinetry. my absolute favorite item in this kitchen by far are these vintage barstools I found them at an estate sale had to have them wouldn't let go of them and what's amazing is that these were actually manufactured in the and they are solid brass if you pull them out you will notice they're extremely heavy and they're extremely comfortable as well the seat is lying in beautiful leather. And they have held up quite well over the years so not only do they look good but they are actually very comfortable.

Home smart home: India's booming home automation market
Tumblr media
As a habit, Tom Joseph, 50, bathes twice a day. This routine makes him reach for the geyser switch at least four times daily. A couple of months ago, Joseph bought a smart plug and his life changed. Today, he doesn’t have to bother about switching the machine on or off. It is programmed to function for an hour at 7:00 am and then at 7:00 pm. The smart plug also responds to voice commands. So Joseph, based in the National Capital Region, gets hot water whenever he asks for it.
Impressed by the technology, Joseph has now retrofitted his old air conditioner and TV to make them smart. He now uses a voice-enabled remote to control all these equipment, instead of depending on manually operated remote controls for each.
“When I return home in the evening, it is like the devices know what I want — the air conditioner and TV start even before I get a snack from the kitchen to settle down and relax,” says Joseph, president of Tuya Smart India, an internet of things (IoT) startup.
He is excited about getting rid of mundane tasks. “We no longer call it the future. Smart is current.”
Next on his list are smart curtains and locks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Across households in India, people like Joseph are making a quiet shift to smart equipment as they look for more gear that can take care of routine tasks — operating lights, fans, air conditioners, heaters, air purifiers, door locks, cameras and more.
The smart home market comprises of networked devices and related services that enable automation. It could be a camera that monitors the house or a ceiling fan that increase or decreases speed sensing the comfort of the occupants of the room.
At present, a smart home is about connected things. Devices, each with a unique IP address, are connected directly or indirectly to the home WiFi making it easy to control them. These devices can also monitor certain aspects of a user’s life. Software tracks a person’s habits, like the music they like in the morning and play that, smart mattresses adjust to a person’s back, smart mirrors point out health issues, sensors in toilets check for potential health issues by scanning waste before flushing.
Sumit Padmakar Joshi, vice-chairman & MD of Signify Innovations India (formerly Philips Lighting India), says, “From being a concept, the word smart has gradually evolved. Consumers now have access to intuitive technologies and virtual assistants which can remind them about daily chores, plan their day and operate their appliances.”
Tumblr media
Companies are responding to this demand by flooding the market with smart devices capable of responding to voice and the ambience. According to market research firm IDC, 753,000 smart speakers were shipped to the Indian market in 2018. In 2019, this is expected to reach around 1 million.
Boom in Business The Indian smart home market is expected to be around $6 billion by 2022, a two-fold increase from $3 billion estimated in 2020, according to Statista. Globally, that number is expected to reach $53.45 billion by 2022.
Panasonic, for example, launched an all-smart range of appliances last month.
Manish Sharma, president & CEO of Panasonic India & South Asia, says, “Machines equipped with sensors will be able to comprehend whether an activity in a room is normal or if there is discomfort for the occupants. That is intelligence.” These appliances will create value for consumers, he says.
Customers can operate the devices from anywhere and know how much power an appliance consumes.
The technology also does self-diagnosis.
Let us say an air conditioner is drawing more electricity because of a choked filter. A sensor will send an alert to a technician to come and fix it.
Then comes personalisation — depending on the temperature, an air conditioner automatically adjusts its settings. Smart devices will also call customer care automatically when it is time for service. This almost lifelike behaviour in machines can also help a user secure his home better. A smart doorbell, for example, can send an image of a person outside the door to your smartphone.
You can remotely talk to the visitor and even open a digital lock via the app.
While smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home made users familiar with the concept of using voice commands to stream music and news, it is now light bulbs to curtains that are getting a smart makeover.
Tumblr media
Sanjay Gupta, senior VP and business head of consumer lighting at Wipro, reckons that up to 2 million homes in India have at least a smart bulb that can be switched on or off and can adjust the brightness on a voice command.
This shift to smart homes with intelligence in-built in appliances is accelerating.
Google works with 3,500 brands that have 30,000 smart products in the market.
Wipro Lighting gets 3% of its business from smart bulbs in 2019-20 and expects to get 15% by FY22. Delhi-based startup Oakter, which makes smart devices, plans to launch a new smart home product every six months. Philips Smart Lighting has products that can be controlled via a mobile app or voice assistants such as Alexa and Siri. This proliferation in smart devices has led to a surge in data, too. IoT startup Tuya Smart, which processes 40 million voice commands every day globally, in January launched its cloud server in Mumbai to store data from smart home devices.
The starting point to make a home smart could be an appropriate light bulb or speaker.
Surabh Arya, business lead-homes and Nest products, Google, says, “Step one to building a smart house is ensuring connectivity.
After that, it is installing connected devices. If those two conditions are met, it is technically a smart home.”
For Joseph, it was a geyser.
For Shishir Gupta, cofounder & CEO of Oakter, it was a smart lock that he himself made. Cofounded by three IITians, Oakter has three smart home products — a water level meter for overhead tanks, a universal voice-enabled remote and a smart plug.
IDC India says there are four broad uses of smart home devices: entertainment and video, lighting, surveillance and appliances. The first category is the most popular with smart TVs and streaming videos. According to IDC, 60% of the premium TVs sold last year were smart.
Jaipal Singh, lead analyst for smart home and wearables, IDC India, says, “Alexa, Google Home sharpened the users’ focus towards exploring more use cases on voice commands. Music and entertainment remain the top use case in smart homes.”
Use cases could expand as consumers now want their homes to give the same experience they get in a connected car. And domestic manufacturers are also warming up to the idea.
Hero Electronix, which makes digital set-top boxes, started producing smart home products under the brand Qubo in September.
“Demand for home automation solutions is on the rise due to use cases around connectivity, security and entertainment,” says Nikhil Rajpal, CEO, Hero Electronix.
There is demand from tier-2 cities also.
Qubo has six smart products with built-in Alexa — including cameras, smoke & gas sensors and smart plugs.
“We solve practical use cases.
For example, using cameras and voice recognition, parents can get to know when their children returned from school and they can even talk to them from remote locations,” Rajpal adds.
Such systems will work well only if there is seamlessly internet connectivity. As network systems improve with 5G and other such technology, smart homes will see wider and better acceptance.
“5G will accelerate growth of smart homes,” says Anku Jain, managing director of MediaTek India, “as connectivity will be better, lag will be less and capacity will be higher.” A third of chip-maker MediaTek’s business comes from smart homes applications.
Part of the reason for the swift shift to smart devices now is due to the ease with which it can be done and the pace of roll-out of technology.
For instance, Alexa was launched in the US just five years ago and India was the fourth country to have the smart speaker. “There has been a 5X increase in Alexa-enabled smart home users in 2019,” says Puneesh Kumar, country manager for Alexa experience & devices, Amazon India. “The selection of smart home devices has also increased 30X.”
Early adopters struggled to make their geysers, microwaves and bulbs smart. It was a 12-15 step process, with a separate app for each appliance. Now it is a single-step process, thanks to industry aligning to certain standards such as ZigBee and original equipment makers working with companies that make smart speakers. Even if users have products from multiple vendors — like Voltas, Havells, Usha, Philips, Sony, Xiaomi, Syska, Wipro — smart speakers will be able to discover and help control all of these from one device. Panasonic users, for example, can now either use the company’s app to control things or sync with Alexa or Google Home. A user can ask Alexa to “discover my devices” and all devices that can be connected will show up on the app. The same can be done on Google Nest, a smart home platform.
Kumar adds, “It is going beyond luxury to convenience and that is the biggest factor why people are switching to smart devices.
It is also great for differently-abled people as they can control devices without having to move.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The devices are also getting better and more powerful so routine tasks, like switching on the geyser at a particular time, become hassle-free. Smart speakers like Nest Hub and Alexa help users streamline multiple tasks with a single voice command — a command like “Ok Google, I’m home” can turn on lights or set off scheduled reminders related to a dinner date, a birthday party or bill payments.
Google Nest products like the Mini have dedicated machine learning chips and a processing capability of one TeraOps (one trillion calculations per second). Such computing capability makes the machine translate and act on a simple command in either Hindi or English without lag.
No longer will a family on vacation have to worry if they have left the geyser on or if the front door was locked. They can check from anywhere in the world using a smartphone.
All this comfort comes at a cost that can look like a luxury when compared with regular devices and appliances.
When smart bulbs were first launched about 16 months ago, they cost as high as Rs 2,400. A year ago, the price of a 7-watt bulb dropped to Rs 1,200. But that is still six times more than a similar wattage LED light. Smart doorbells cost Rs 4,000-7,000, while a regular one can start from Rs 50. Smart locks can leave you poorer by around Rs 25,000 against a regular one that cost Rs 500. But the advantages are manifold.
Godrej, for example, has the Advantis range of locks that start at Rs 25,000 and come with fingerprint sensors, can store four unique passwords and ring an alarm on sensing a fire.
Overall costs of smart home products could come down as volumes rise and a local ecosystem develops.
Sushant Bhargava, assistant general manager, Godrej Security Solutions, says, “Lockers have moved from keys to digital PINs to biometrics and, now, operate in a connected world.
In the latest range of lockers if someone tries to break in, it sets off an alarm and sends a text message or an automated call to the owner.”
For security reasons, locks are standalone units and cannot be activated via smart speakers. “At present, we do not see a use case for such devices,” he added.
A customer can start building a smart home for as little as Rs 10,000 and later add more devices that could cost up to Rs 1 lakh, depending on usage. Companies are also offering freebies to spread their reach. For example, customers buying Alexa smart speakers were given a free Wipro smart bulb around last Diwali. This helped Wipro sell more smart lights.
Gupta of Wipro says, “Despite the high cost, buyer response online was better than expected. Around last Diwali, prices dropped to Rs 500 (from Rs 1,200). As prices fall more, smart lighting will take off.” By Diwali 2020, Wipro will push smart products offline as well. The company is also evaluating new products, including geyser sockets, phone chargers, curtain controllers and motion sensors.
The price will come down as volumes go up, says Panasonic’s Sharma, much like it happened with smartphones.
Be Smart, Be Safe A smart device has to listen, translate and then execute a command as simple as “dim the lights”. Companies insist that devices start recording only after the prompt word is uttered — this could be “Ok Google”, “Alexa” or “computer”, among others.
But are the devices listening to more than what they are supposed to? Also, if you order a book via a smart speaker such as Amazon Echo, what if the order command (and other conversations) lands on the wrong cloud? You might feel secure that cameras installed outside the house are scanning all activities and sending alerts on your smartphone. But what if the system is hacked and a thief gets to see the images to figure out the right time to strike?
“For a device to know what to do, it has to transcribe, translate every word a user utters,” says Saket Modi, cofounder & CEO, Lucideus, a Palo Alto-headquartered cyber risk quantification platform company with clients such as NPCI, ICICI Bank and Delhi Airport. “That is fundamentally the cost of convenience.”
Voice is the primary source of interaction for smart devices that can make life more convenient by taking care of routine tasks. As the use of such devices increases, so is the amount of data that is being shared by connected/IoT devices.
In fact, users aren’t always aware about the amount of data that is being collected and where and how it is being stored. Pramod Sudhindra, partner-advisory services, EY India, says, “It is fine to use smart devices if you are okay sharing some of the data with a cyber farm somewhere.
Otherwise, there is no price you can put on security. At least make sure you buy hardware from reputed makers.”
Anti-virus software did a good job of securing systems when desktops and laptops were the only source of digital footprints. But now that print can be picked from air purifiers, washing machines, microwaves, fans, bulbs and so on. A smart speaker is constantly listening to all conversations happening in the room. Moreover, these devices get better as they listen and learn more about a user looking for smart solutions.
“Anything that multiplies conveniences multiplies threats as well,” says Modi. There is a lot that needs to be done at the WiFi router level to make smart homes secure. A smart way to ensure security is “a combination of technology, control and awareness,” adds Modi.
In an article in Time.com, David Cooley, chief strategy officer at Silicon Labs, says any breach could be catastrophic for the industry. “I call it a mass-extinction event for the Internet of Things.” The rapidly expanding industry faces this onerous task of ensuring smart is safe.

Where Kites Fly, Kites Also Fall
NEW DELHI — Sitting in his basement, below the crowded dirt roads of Wazirabad village, Mohammad Saud leaned over the body of an injured black kite.
The room was cramped, its walls chipping blue paint, the noise from the streets above drowned out by the whir of a fan. Mr. Saud stared at the bird in front of him for a couple of seconds, then gently folded its wing over with a gloved hand. At least two bones, four tendons and two muscles had been snapped. The bird’s head tilted back limply, eyes cloudy. Mr. Saud adjusted his glasses with the crook of his elbow, then stated the obvious: “This is a gone case. Nothing can be done.”
Mr. Saud placed the kite back into a thin cardboard box. As he did so, Salik Rehman, a young employee of Mr. Saud, reached into a different cardboard box and pulled out another black kite. This bird’s right wing was wrapped in a gauze bandage stained with dried blood and pus. Mr. Saud examined it briefly. Another gone case, he concluded; it would have to be euthanized.
Fourteen more cardboard boxes surrounded them, each filled with a black kite that Mr. Rehman, Mr. Saud and Nadeem Shehzad, Mr. Saud’s brother, had collected earlier in the day from animal hospitals around Delhi. The three men, along with a part-time veterinarian, comprise a bird rehabilitation organization called Wildlife Rescue that treats more than 2,000 birds of prey a year.
Nearly all of those birds are black kites, which are everywhere in Delhi. The Yamuna River, which flows by Wazirabad, is so toxic that some sections cannot sustain aquatic life, but kites scavenge muddy trash from its banks in swarms. On a typical day, dozens can be seen circling above Old Delhi, the bustling heart of the city, rising on columns of warm air.
Mr. Saud and Mr. Shehzad have sacrificed everything for Wildlife Rescue since founding it 20 years ago. Sacrificed everything for the black kite, a bird that is neither endangered nor particularly attractive and, in Delhi, is about as unloved as the pigeon. “It’s some kind of sense of duty,” Mr. Shehzad said, with a shrug. “If not us, then nobody’s going to take care of them.”
A fatal thread
Despite its name, the black kite is dark brown, its feathers speckled with white and eyes deep-set behind a sharply curved beak. In 1997, when Mr. Shehzad and Mr. Saud were in high school, they found a kite with a bloody wing on a street near their house in Old Delhi.
The bird was tangled in manja — cotton thread coated with colorful layers of crushed glass. Manja is often used to fly paper kites, a popular pastime in India, one that became a symbol of national pride in Delhi after the country gained independence from Britain in 1947. On clear days, especially after monsoon season, when the Delhi rooftops are dotted with people, kites speckle the sky, their threads forming an invisible cat’s cradle overhead.
The crushed glass gives manja enough texture to sever the strings of other kites in informal neighborhood competitions, but it can be fatal. Every year a dozen Delhi citizens — speeding motorcyclists, rickshaw drivers, young children — are killed when glass-encrusted thread falls and wraps around their necks.
In 2017, the city banned the use of manja, but to little effect; the thread is still sold in many street-side markets and can be found on almost every kite in the air. It is a particular threat to birds. Thousands have their wings slashed in the mild weather of late summer and autumn, and are sent tumbling down to the crowded streets below.
Back in 1997, the brothers took the injured black kite they had found — its wing torn by a paper kite — to the Charity Bird Hospital, the largest and oldest bird hospital in the city and one of several animal hospitals established by Jains in Delhi.
A core tenet of Jainism, a small but influential religion in India, is ahimsa, the practice of nonviolence and compassion toward all forms of life. On a wall of the Charity Bird Hospital, located within Shri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir, a Jain temple with tall red spires, is a painting of a Jain king sacrificing his arm, then his foot and eventually his life to save a pigeon.
The practice of ahimsa benefits wildlife but can also complicate procedures in animal hospitals. Elsewhere, a wild animal would be euthanized if it had no chance of being rehabilitated to its habitat, but Jains do not euthanize. Instead, they care for seriously injured birds, in cages, until they die.
Jains also do not handle meat on temple grounds. Consequently, the Charity Bird Hospital refused to accept the kite — a carnivore — that Mr. Shehzad and Mr. Saud found. Dr. Nidish Bharadwaj, one of the hospital’s veterinarians, said in an interview that he has tried to feed raptors a mixture of cheese and soybeans, but it is not enough. If an injury to a black kite was serious, the hospital would turn the bird away, knowing it would starve if kept for more than a day. A death sentence either way.
At the time, Mr. Shehzad was confused by this logic. “Why is there discrimination between a vegetarian and a nonvegetarian?” he thought. As Muslims, both he and Mr. Saud eat meat, and they took the hospital’s rejection personally. “It hit us somewhere inside, because we were nonvegetarian ourselves,” he said. The brothers brought the kite back to where they had found it. They could do nothing else.
‘We have destroyed our family life’
Over time and with the help of a number of local veterinarians, Mr. Shehzad and Mr. Saud started treating the birds themselves. They collected kites from the Charity Bird Hospital and other Jain-owned hospitals, and brought them back to their basement in Wazirabad to care for them. There, the brothers learned how to clean and bandage open wounds, unwrap wings from tangled manja and feed raptors raw buffalo meat out of the palms of their hands.
Ninety percent of the kites that Mr. Saud and Mr. Shehzad collect have wings slashed by manja, and about half of these die from gangrene or infection. Most are gone cases before they enter the basement room; others must be euthanized by a veterinarian. The kites that are nursed back to health are brought up three narrow flights of stairs to the roof, where they join several dozen other birds in various states of recovery, packed into three wire cages. The largest cage has an open top that fully rehabilitated kites can use as a gate of re-entry to the city.
Near the house, released kites, healthy enough to fly short distances, perch in rows on rooftops and window sills. Mr. Shehzad and Mr. Saud estimate that they have treated 20,000 black kites in the past 20 years. They sometimes dedicate more than 12 hours a day to treating birds; Mr. Saud said that he sometimes misses dinner while caring for kites and rarely finds time to play or do homework with his young son.
The organization’s expenses — equipment, veterinarian, transportation and more than 500 pounds of meat every month — have also placed a financial burden on the brothers. They have financed the operation entirely with the profits from their family’s liquid-soap dispenser manufacturing business, which they run out of their basement next to the small room filled with injured birds.
They receive almost no support from the government; their grant requests have been rejected for a variety of bureaucratic reasons, but Mr. Shehzad is suspicious. He thinks it has something to do with the fact that Wildlife Rescue treats nonvegetarian birds, and that he is a Muslim.
His wife, Tabassum Shehzad, sympathizes with his calling, and sometimes even helps to feed the birds. Nonetheless, she said, her husband was “ruining his life.” She might not have married him had she known things would go this way.
Mr. Shehzad is aware of this. “We have destroyed our family life,” he said. “We have destroyed our relations with our friends, our relatives, our wives, our parents, even our 2- and 4-year-old children.”
Now, with almost all their money gone and their families worn out, the brothers are confronting the prospect of shutting down Wildlife Rescue. “People don’t want us to work?” Mr. Shehzad said. “O.K., this is the best we can do. Actually, we did better than our best: We are already empty.”

The Levy Family's Irving Powerhouse
New Post has been published on http://doggietrainingclasses.com/the-levy-familys-irving-powerhouse/
The Levy Family's Irving Powerhouse
Nine years ago, Taiwanese pig farmers caused a stir that reverberated 7,700 miles away in an Irving office block. An odor-eating cleanup chemical made by NCH Corp. had mistakenly been poured into a water tank used by 25,000 piglets. When told to flush the biological product—unlicensed as a feed supplement—the Taiwanese flatly refused.
Their defiance stemmed from seeing the pigs gain 3 percent more weight on the same diet over a month, while mortality halved, from 4.5 percent to 2 percent, saving the farm a bundle. The Taiwanese attributed the improvements to NCH’s product and, with the pigs so healthy, regulators gave special permission for the farm to continue using it.
NCH now markets a probiotic feed supplement made from more effective, FDA-approved ingredients, to farms in Thailand, Taiwan, India, and Mexico. A study by a university in Taiwan found chickens gained 4.4 percent more weight than a control group, with an added bonus of statistically “significant” less E. coli and salmonella, a major problem in the poultry industry.
“If we can do this for animals, why can’t we do it for humans?” asks Lester Levy Jr., one of four co-CEOs (that’s not a misprint) of family-run NCH.
Going beyond their core fields—lubricants, water treatment chemicals, plumbing parts, and cleaning products—is nothing new for the company. Over time, it has sold church sheet music, fish tanks, graffiti removers, first aid kits, a hairball remedy for cats, and diapers for dog.
The Levys now running the company trace that entrepreneurialism to their grandfather, Milton P. Levy Sr., who launched the National Disinfectant Co. in 1919 near Old City Park in Dallas. It was a good time to go into hygiene products, as the world was in the middle of a Spanish influenza epidemic. Milton had other motivations, too; he wanted to impress a reluctant girlfriend so she’d return from New York and marry him. He ultimately prevailed, and the match endured—as did his company, becoming National Chemsearch and later renamed NCH Corp.
Over the next 100 years, the family-led venture survived a near collapse after World War II, went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 1969 (with the Levys holding a majority of shares), went private again three decades later, and weathered a major downturn during the 2008 recession. It is now generating a comfortable $1 billion in sales in 58 countries, employing 7,500 around the globe.
Still, NCH and the third-generation of Levys remain far less well known than other homegrown North Texas enterprises and their respective founding families. “When I tell people in Dallas that I do work for NCH, they say, ‘Who?’” says Jim Davidson, an executive trainer who has done work for the company and known the family for about 15 years. “The Levys have been very successful and support community efforts, but they don’t go, ‘Look at us! Look at us!’ They keep a low profile in the community—I would assume deliberately.”
AGREEING TO DISAGREE
The four NCH CEOs also serve as co-presidents of the company. They’re two sets of Levy brothers—John and Robert, and their cousins, Walter and Lester Jr., whose sister, Ann, is the other Levy on the company’s board.
John handles global corporate services and the Partsmaster division of industrial supplies. He’s tall, quiet, and health-minded, Davidson says. “He’ll walk up six flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator. He is the financial person, very factual.”
Walter, who supervises Asian chemical sales, is the most sociable, Davidson says, and likes to look at new ideas operationally. Robert, who handles the Danco-brand and the rest of the plumbing division, as well as retail pet products, is quiet, but can be the catalyst for action at the end of a discussion.
Lester Jr., who oversees biological product lines and Latin American chemical sales, “is an idea person, always bouncing ideas, looking for more,” Davidson says. A former college athlete, Lester studied the African meerkat during prolonged stays on the continent and maintains a website about the mongoose cousin, meerkats.net.
The four CEOs have figured out a way to work well together as a family unit, Davidson says: “They have different personalities, but they respect the different aspects of those personalities. Each brings a unique perspective to the business.”
All four of the Levys have MBAs. Lester and Walter earned theirs despite having dyslexia—Walter severely. He dealt with the challenge by getting his textbooks recorded. Both brothers now routinely use text-to-sound software. Walter recently expressed disbelief when Lester told him that he had read an entire book cover to cover. “What book?” Walter challenged. “Tuesdays with Morrie,” his younger brother replied.
The four frequently argue, but it never becomes a fight, Robert says. “Twenty minutes later, we’ll all be at dinner together.”
By 2013, Walter had concluded that NCH needed to quit the fracking business. Sales for its “green” fracking chemical were booming like the drilling technique itself. But costs also mounted. Only Robert joined Walter in his skepticism. “I drank the Kool Aid,” admits Lester Jr., as did John. Revenue poured in, but NCH had to keep investing ever more to keep up.
“I kept saying, ‘No!’” Walter recalls. “Every month the list of customers changed and I asked, ‘Why can’t we keep customers?’ At any time, Schlumberger or Halliburton could spend more on R&D and create a better product. I thought there would be no way to compete.”
Walter finally won over the two holdouts, and today there’s only relief. Explains Lester: “We don’t want to put a lot of assets in a highly cyclical business.
In 2016, NCH sold the Terra Services unit for a few million and wrote off the losses. “The major lesson for us,” John says, “is that we are more comfortable innovating products that are closer to the traditional  markets we have pursued in the core chemical business.”
The coming-of-age moment for the third generation of Levys was the foray into East Europe, as the Soviet Empire collapsed. Lester was visiting West Germany when the Berlin Wall fell. He joined hordes of mauerspechte or “wall woodpeckers,” who handed him a rail spike and a hammer to chip off concrete pieces of history.
A small chunk of the wall is mounted in a shadow box at NCH headquarters, enclosed with a snapshot of the hammer-wielding Levy.  “There were 200 Russian tanks waiting there and I told myself, ‘I’m going to get killed,’” Lester recalls. But the armored vehicles didn’t shift or fire and he had an epiphany. “I realized the East was opening up.”
REBOUNDING FROM TRAGEDY
The previous generation of NCH leaders—three sons of the company’s founder—had come of age in a very different way: by saving the business. Milton Jr. (Bubba), Lester Sr., and Irvin shelved their own ambitions in 1946 when their father dropped dead of a heart attack at the age of 55. That left their 52-year-old mother, Ruth, in charge, but owing the government a crippling wartime “excess profits” tax bill of $100,000 (equivalent to $1.34 million in 2019) and a third of its gross revenue.
Lester Sr. had passed the bar exam before serving in the Army Air Corps and wanted to practice law. But his mother implored him: “Lester, you run the company and make it right.”
An emergency infusion of capital was needed. Luckily, Jack Mann a longtime and loyal employee, stayed with the company. He took the three Levy sons to Mercantile National, where he told its chief, Milton F. Brown, that extending a life-saving loan was better than the bank finding itself in the disinfectant business. Brown needed little convincing. “I never lost any money on your dad,” the banker told them. “He borrowed from me for years, and I don’t believe fruit falls far from the tree. So, I’m going to go along with you boys.”
Crisis averted, the second generation leaders transformed the distribution company by hiring chemists, microbiologists, and other technical specialists to expand manufacturing of their own industrial and maintenance products at a new plant in Irving. Sales offices, then production units, were opened around the country and overseas.
National Disinfectant Co. was rechristened as National Chemsearch in 1960 to reflect new product lines. Sales reached $47 million by 1969, when NCH floated publicly traded shares. Instead of hiring outside consultants to suggest how to enter new markets, the brothers tested the waters with face-to-face sales calls, relying on an internal sales bible called The Gears of Selling. Irvin and Bubba conceived the manual while on a business trip to Oklahoma in a stick-shift vehicle. The selling process was broken down into three steps, or “gears.”
A generation later, the sales handbook was used to get through locked gates at a Russian factory, to demonstrate a self-polishing floor cleaner in a Budapest hotel, and to show amazed Chinese trade fair-goers that an electric motor could be cleaned without highly flammable gasoline. The sales manual explains the importance of initial small talk, handing out promotional novelties, giving live demonstrations, and closing a sale, and includes tips on overcoming excuses not to buy.
TAKING ON EASTERN EUROPE
NCH’s West European managers had taken a pass on the East, where free market economics was still a vague notion. They didn’t want to risk their budgets, or their reputations, on what seemed like a futile effort. But the third-generation leaders relished the challenge. “It was really fun,” says Lester Jr. “It didn’t seem hard to us.”
Walter cold-called on a power plant over the objection of his Russian interpreter. He got in to see the manager by chatting up a guard and handing him a rare, Western-made pocket knife, engraved with the NCH logo.
But not everyone was friendly toward Americans. Portraits of Lenin still adorned some factory managers’ offices. And there were other challenges. Phones didn’t work. A Czech Ph.D. took a 13-hour bus journey for a job interview after being reached by messenger. “The hardest part was finding people to trust,” says Jerry Mansfield, a British employee who was recruited for the East Europe expansion. A Russian chemist ran off with NCH’s product formulations. A St. Petersburg factory had 40,000 people on the books, but only 100 actually came to work. Russian authorities twice drained NCH’s bank accounts; in one case, half was seized as “taxes” and the remainder taken as a “loan” to the government.
NCH gave up on Russia and Bulgaria, and Ukraine, Moldova, and Kazakhstan were a no-go, Walter says. But other former Soviet bloc countries proved welcoming. It helped that maintenance supplies from Russia were no longer imported. But the poor conditions cut both ways.
“Prague was crumbling, and dirty. Things didn’t work,” recalls Edward Jansen, a multilingual Dutchman who would end up running sales in East Europe. “Some factory floors hadn’t been cleaned in years—a half inch of oil covered the floor. It was like walking on gum. But it was great for us,” says Jansen, explaining that NCH’s cleaning products fulfilled an obvious need.
The company opened small warehouses throughout the region, hiring and training core management. Ph.D. holders were willing to peddle the company’s goods—something unheard of today. “We went from zero to 250 salesmen in five years; total sales quickly hit $60 million” says Jansen, in a call from Switzerland, where he now runs his own business after 15 years with NCH. “Competition became tougher with more foreign companies coming in, but they didn’t build a good foundation with qualified people like we had. That’s why NCH is still here.”
A FAMILY BUY-BACK
Another turning point was the decision by the third generation to take NCH private. Their fathers were not keen on the idea. The sons argued that the company was undervalued. Diversified conglomerates were out of favor and NCH was no longer followed by Wall Street analysts. “We had been among the ‘Nifty 50’ [for high earnings per share] because of our high growth in the 1950s and 60s,” says John. “But growth had slowed to single digits,” Walter adds. “We stopped being sexy.”
“We saw our parents were getting older and tax laws were friendlier to private companies,” says Lester Jr. “By keeping it in the family, we protected employees from upheavals,” says John, adding that “it took us two years to persuade our parents to take on debt.” Having grown up during the Depression, they were wary of borrowing heavily. “Really it was John who pulled it off,” Walter recalls. “He convinced everyone.”
In 2002, the family bought back the 43 percent of stock it didn’t already own, by borrowing $108 million. “We paid that off,” Lester Jr. says. “In 18 months,” adds Walter. “No, two years, two months—paid in full,” says John. Revenue grew from $679 million in 2001 to $1 billion today.
That’s not to say there haven’t been challenges. Three years ago, the Department of Justice fined NCH about $335,342 for plying Chinese government officials with gifts, meals, and other hospitality to influence purchases. Compared to other U.S. companies that have been fined millions for bribery, NCH’s penalty was relatively small. The DOJ explained the leniency by noting that the Texas company had blown the whistle on itself, carried out a comprehensive internal investigation of the bribes, and took disciplinary action against those who were responsible.
John Levy says it should come as no surprise that NCH voluntarily informed federal authorities. “Our family has always had a very strong philosophy about doing business ethically, with no exceptions or tolerance for marginally questionable activities,” he says. “We repeat advice that has been handed down to us: ‘You should not do anything that you would not want to read about on the front page of your local newspaper.’”
LOOKING AHEAD
The company is gearing up for ongoing expansion. It has outgrown its Irving plant and is shifting production of water treatment chemicals to a new 200,000-square-foot facility in Greenville, freeing up more room for lubricant manufacturing in DFW. Then there’s the biotech breakthrough that evolved from the Taiwanese pig incident. After the 2010 episode, a small team in Irving reworked the probiotic, using microbials deemed safe by the American Association of Feed Control Officials and the FDA. “It took us eight months to develop the first product safe to feed pigs and chickens,” says Charles Greenwald, an A&M geneticist who heads the group.
Using a proprietary system called ECOcharger, even more probiotics are absorbed in an animal’s gut. The additive did cause one problem; at one Asian poultry farm, eggs came out 25 percent bigger, so packing machinery had to be shut down until readjusted to handle the extra jumbo eggs. The ECOcharger radically ramps up absorption of beneficial bacteria to 90 percent, compared to about 3 percent absorption of probiotic products now on the market.
Would there be a way to deliver a super beneficial probiotic in, say, an Earl Grey teabag? Human testing is planned for this year at a Texas university, and preliminary talks are under way with U.S. pharmaceutical companies and food processors.
“There was a lot of disbelief internally, at the board level,” Greenwald says. “They didn’t know we had the skill set to enter this market. Lester supported us.” And the others were won over. “The Levys are dreamers,” Greenwald says. “They also get things done.”
Meanwhile, four adult cousins from the fourth generation of the Levy family have joined NCH. Will they someday lead the company? “That’s left to be determined,” says John Levy, noting that there had been no formal succession plan for him and his co-CEOs. “It just evolved,” he says. “We’ll see how they progress in their careers.”

Nokia 7 Plus review: The perfect mid-range smartphone First unveiled at MWC 2018 in Barcelona, the Nokia 7 Plus was positioned as the mid-range device in HMD Global’s 2018 portfolio of Nokia phones. A couple of months down the track and here is our full Nokia 7 Plus review. After the pitch of “pure and up-to-date Android” last year, the company has now adopted Android One across the board. The trusted stock Android experience, combined with a competent specifications sheet makes the Nokia 7 Plus seem well-rounded on paper. With a host of new releases, the Nokia brand is having a resurgence under new custodian HMD Global, generating a lot of consumer attention in the process. Is the Nokia 7 Plus the device to translate that interest into sales? For this review, I took the Indian variant of the Nokia 7 Plus for a spin. My colleague, Adam Sinicki, used the same unit to shoot the video review in the UK. Show More Design The Nokia 7 Plus scores high on aesthetics. It exudes class and looks gorgeous. The phone’s copper accents — the strip running along the edges, the buttons, and the rings around the camera module and fingerprint scanner — make it really stand out. The Nokia 7 Plus features an 18:9 display which dominates the front of the phone, with just a small chin at the bottom and Nokia branding on the bezel on the top. The rounded edges make the phone nice and comfortable to grip. The soft matte finish and ceramic coating on the back give it a nice tactile feel which will help prevent the phone from slipping out of your hand. The camera module protrudes slightly from the back, but the copper trim would likely protect the lenses from picking up scratches. Built from a single block of series 6000 aluminum, the Nokia 7 Plus feels solid and well built. At 183 grams, it’s a little hefty, but the weight is distributed quite well. Overall, the Nokia 7 Plus is a well-built smartphone that looks more premium than its price would indicate. It will no doubt have a lot of people gawking in a coffee shop. Display The Nokia 7 Plus sports a 6-inch IPS LCD Full HD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a pixel density of 402ppi. It is the first device in the Nokia portfolio to adopt the newer trend of taller displays. Overall, the display is pretty good. It’s quite vivid and the viewing angles are great. For an LCD, the blacks are so deep you’d almost mistake it for an OLED panel. If you prefer more true-to-life colors, you might find the Nokia 7 Plus slightly oversaturated. Personally, I quite like it. Unfortunately, the display is not too bright, so sunlight legibility is not exceptional, though it’s not terrible. The touch response on the Nokia 7 Plus is perfect and running your thumb across the display while scrolling provides insatnt feedback. There’s also Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for scratch protection. Performance Powered by the freshly minted octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset with Adreno 512 GPU, the Nokia 7 Plus packs in 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, expandable up to 256GB with a microSD card. With only default apps running in the background, there’s 2.7GB of RAM available at any point. The Snapdragon 660 is one of the most powerful SoCs for mid-range smartphones out there, managing flagship-grade performance on a budget by using Kryo 260 cores manufactured with the 14nm FinFET process. That horsepower combined with stock Android makes the Nokia 7 Plus a solid performer. It can take anything you throw at it without breaking a sweat. It can handle graphics-intensive games at max settings without heating up, even when playing games for an extended length of time. The Snapdragon 660 is a powerful and frugal processor that makes the Nokia 7 Plus a solid performer. The Nokia 7 Plus packs in a massive 3,800mAh battery which will easily last a day and a half of moderate usage. Even with my aggressive usage, I managed to carry it through the day with about 20 percent juice still left after dinner. In our standard HD video loop test, it managed over 13 hours. Once the battery does run out, the Nokia 7 Plus supports Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging. The bundled charger can charge the phone from zero to 100 percent in less than two hours, which is pretty good for a high capacity battery. The phone does get a little hot while charging. At its price point, the Nokia 7 Plus packs solid innards and outperforms most smartphones with older Snapdragon 600-series processors. It can easily handle the daily grind for most users and offers a smooth Android experience. Hardware One of the less talked about features of the Nokia 7 Plus is its spatial audio capture with three microphones which is quite useful for content creators and people who record a lot of videos. The Nokia 7 Plus is a dual-SIM device, sporting a hybrid tray slot so you can either use two nano-SIMs or a nano-SIM and a microSD card. The fingerprint scanner on the back works reasonably fast, although it is positioned a little too high for my tastes. If you have small hands, you’re likely to have a little trouble reaching it comfortably. Camera The Nokia 7 Plus uses a dual camera setup on the back with Zeiss optics. There’s a 12MP primary lens with f/1.75 aperture and 1.4µm pixel size paired with a 13MP telephoto lens with f/2.6 aperture and 1.0µm pixel size. The Nokia 7 Plus camera manages to take some great images in daylight with crisp colors and a good amount of detail. The camera often took a bit of time to focus though and action shots came out blurred. For portraits or bokeh shots, the telephoto lens blurs out the background nicely and the edge detection is quite good. The telephoto lens offers a 2x lossless optical zoom while there’s also 10x digital zoom if you need it. In low light conditions, some noise does creep in. But thanks to the f/1.75 aperture, the camera manages to capture a good amount of light. Using the Pro mode and fine-tuning the settings gives much better results. The dual-tone LED flash is not overpowering and helps maintain natural skin tone and white balance. On the front, there’s a 16MP camera with f/2.0 aperture and Zeiss optics. Most selfies have pretty good color reproduction and enough detail to keep your social feeds happy. The beautification mode has a slider to adjust for the level of vanity you can digest. The rear camera supports 4K video recording at 30fps (the front camera supports 1080p video recording). There’s no optical image stabilization, and the automatic electronic image stabilization works only in 1080p mode. But it works quite well, and combined with the OZO audio technology with spatial recording capabilities, the Nokia 7 Plus manages to capture some great videos. Editor's Pick Nokia brings back its Pro Camera mode from the dead for its Android phones As forgettable as Nokia's Windows Phone days were, they introduced several smartphones whose cameras were more capable than anything else on the market. That was partially thanks to the Nokia Pro Camera mode, which introduced … The camera app on the Nokia 7 Plus is similar to the one Nokia introduced with the Lumia series back in the day. It offers an intuitive way to fine-tune the settings while looking at the results in real time. There’s also the dual-sight mode, previously marketed as a “bothie,” which lets you take shots or record and stream videos using both front and rear cameras simultaneously. It’s an interesting option for vloggers or if you have kids and pets at home but is pretty pointless for most others. The camera on the Nokia 7 Plus is pretty good, but it’s not perfect. One expects a little more spark in the camera department on a Nokia phone. That said, there are no showstopping issues and it’s a pretty good camera at its price – and there’s nothing that cannot be improved with a software update or two. Software The Nokia 7 Plus comes with stock Android 8.1 Oreo with support for Project Treble. There are no customizations and no bloatware of any kind. It’s a minimalist Android experience out of the box. The Android One device will also get regular security updates as well as an upgrade to Android P. HMD Global has a good track record for delivering updates like clockwork across its entire portfolio, so a Nokia phone is the best deal apart from the Pixel devices for fans of a pure and up-to-date Android experience. Specifications Nokia 7 Plus Display 6.0-inch LCD 2,160 x 1,080 resolution (Full HD+) 403ppi 18:9 aspect ratio Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 (64-bit octa-core, 2.2GHz) GPU Adreno 512 RAM 4GB Storage 64GB Cameras Rear: Dual 12MP and 13MP telephoto with PDAF and Carl Zeiss optics Front: 13MP f/2.0 Battery 3,800mAh IP rating IP54 Software Android 8.0 Oreo Dimensions 158.4 x 75.6 x 7.9mm Gallery Pricing and final thoughts The Nokia 7 Plus is a well-rounded mid-range smartphone with a very capable specifications sheet, no-frills Android experience, and good-looking chassis. You’d be hard-pressed to find a flaw with this device, really. Nokia 7 Plus is a well-rounded package that offers the right amalgamation of performance and aesthetics. At 25,999 rupees (~$387) in India, some of my media colleagues at the launch said that it was priced a tad high — I disagree. There’s a justifiable premium for visual appeal and dependable hardware that comes in a package with an overall finesse. For me, the Nokia 7 Plus has just the right mix of performance and aesthetics. In a segment that’s usually under-served, the Nokia 7 Plus deserves the crown. , via Android Authority http://bit.ly/2k2cYgZ
