Shree Somnath
Jyotirlinga Temple
The principal temple of Somnath is believed to have been built in gold by the moon god Soma, in silver by the sun god Ravi, in wood by Krishna and in stone by the Solanki Rajputs in the 11th century. The present temple, built in 1951, is the seventh reconstruction on the original site. Tales of its riches attracted a series of invasions, but each time the temple was invaded, it was restored to its original glory by devout Hindu worshipers. Commanding a breathtaking view from the tip of the Saurashtra peninsula, kissed by the waves of the Arabian coast, the temple has been constructed in the Chalukyan style with a shikhara nearly 50 m tall. The temple's imposing architecture includes intricate carvings, silver doors, an impressive Nandi idol and the central shivalinga. In the vast courtyard stand the massive mandapa (hall), as well as the main shrine, whose gently curved pyramidal forms tower over the whole complex.
Through a side door the sea is visible shimmering in the sunlight. Try slipping out to gaze at the roaring waves below, which though not safe for swimming, present an exhilarating spectacle. In view, you will find a tower called Deep Stambha erected on the embankment. On the top is a shape like a conch shell on its side, and in the tower is an arrow pointing directly to the south pole (interestingly, a line between here and the south pole crosses no land until Antarctica.)
The Kartik Purnima Fair is held here for four days beginning on Kartik Sud 14 according to the Hindu calendar, and attracts crowds in large numbers.
How to get there
By road: Somnath is 79 km from Junagadh and 25 km from Chorwad. State transport buses and private luxury coaches connect various centres of Gujarat to Somnath.
By rail: Somnath is located 6 km from the nearest railway station at Veraval.

The city of Joy- Kolkata
Tumblr media
You either fall in love with Kolkata – hook, line, and sinker, or you simply don’t. Steeped in the colonial legacy that is as old as four centuries, Kolkata elicits an extreme reaction mostly from folks that visit it, and even those that have made it their home. The eccentricities of the city, its over-crowded bazaars, the lavish spattering of Victorian architecture melding into dingy neighborhoods of ancestral homes that have seen better days, are enough for those who prefer its languid rhythm to absolutely adore and cherish it.
In order to truly soak up the essence of Kolkata, there is plenty to take in outside of its well-known languorous pace. Here shopkeepers bring down their shutters in the afternoon to indulge in a siesta – prospective customers be waiting. The evenings are punctuated with rounds of tea and cutlet at a coffee house over an animated political discussion, and everyone – from hawkers, cabbies, to wayfarers – move in a beat of their own. Whether it is shopping for Tant and Kantha sarees, secondhand books or tripping on lip-smacking Chinese – also inexpensive – to picking up antiques like an old Roman clock, a Gramophone or a vinyl record – Kolkata sets the perfect stage.
Today we give you eight compelling reasons to visit the only Indian city that went through Renaissance.
1. You don’t need a reason to indulge your sweet tooth:
Tumblr media
When not joining the fellas for an adda at the rock (rock here refers to leisurely chat on the porch of a house or a playground), Bong folks indulge themselves with sweets doused in patali gud (palm jaggery). Some of the sweets you need to cross out from your wish-list of traditional Bengali sweets are the ubiquitous Rosogolla, Sandesh, Chom Chom, Sita Bhog, Langcha, Kalo Jaam, Gaja, Kheer Kadam to name a few. Don’t rely only on the sweets available at the hotels in Kolkata – go out and savour the local shops. You don’t have to go far and wide in search of these assorted sweets, even your friendly neighborhood sweet-shop will do a nifty job of them.
2.  Kolkata is synonymous with budget shopping: If you are the artsy type and have an ethnic bias in your preference of clothes and fabric, Kolkata is your hub. The dizzying array of sarees its local markets offer from Tant, Katha, Baluchari, Bangladeshi Dhakai, to hand-painted and embroidered ones on Tussar and Bishnupuri silk, can make a discerning saree connoisseur out of you. Furthermore, head to the New Market area for some pretty trinkets in silver, pick up pieces of Blue Pottery, the famed Bakura horses carved in terracotta too make for a good souvenir, including the elaborately decked Chau masks depicting gods and goddesses from Indian mythology.
3. Of tram rides and Durga Puja: While people here are always on the move, they are in no rush to get anywhere. To test this maxim, a tram ride is warranted. The milieu of people using it as a daily mode of transport, their quirky chatter, and their inherent passion to quote Robi Thakur (Rabindranath Tagore for you), is an art acquired. Besides, its quite another thing to experience the city during Durga puja decked up for festivities. The exhibition of lights, the grandiose puja pandals, the fervor, and the unrelenting din on the streets intermingling with the sound of conch and chiming bells, can get you addicted to the kaleidoscope that is Kolkata.
4. The Ganges flowing beneath the Howrah Bridge is the most photographed site:
Tumblr media
The iconic Howrah Bridge straddling a serene Ganga river with a lone oarsman dragging his frail wooden boat along it, is a lasting imagery this old-world city throws up. One of the busiest cantilever bridges in the world, commissioned in 1943 under British India, a drive through the Howrah Bridge passing the daily vistas of the Hooghly River is at once rejuvenating and a must-do for every tourist to the ‘City of Joy.’
5. A day of sightseeing and an evening of light and sound show at Victoria Memorial:
Tumblr media
Not to mention, there is no escaping the touristy things to do in Kolkata, for they too carry with them a certain novelty. Agreed you have seen your share of museums and interactive spaces, but Kolkata’s Science City is in a league of its own, comparable only to Andhra’s Birla Science Museum. From taking a trip in a time machine to experiencing the phenomena of quicksand – it truly makes science relatable, even engrossing. Proceed to the Nehru Children’s Museum and browse the doll’s gallery to get a sense of the country’s ethnicity. Round up with a trip to the iconic Victoria Memorial. Peruse the museum for its collection of portraits and memorabilia of the Queen before winding up in the sprawling gardens for an engaging light and sound show reconstructing pages from India’s history.
