EDM's Impact on Music 2018-2023
Tumblr media
Has the genre finally made itself fully mainstream?
Electronic Dance Music, commonly referred to as EDM, has been a transformative force in the music industry for decades. However, over the past five years, its influence on pop culture has reached unprecedented levels. This article delves into the effects of modern EDM on the musical landscape, shedding light on how this genre has reshaped trends, produced cross-genre collaborations, and broadened the very definition of popular music.
1. The Rise of EDM Sub-genres and Their Influence
In the past, EDM was largely classified into a few mainstream sub-genres, such as trance, house, and techno. However, the past five years have seen the emergence and popularization of numerous sub-genres, each adding a unique flavor to the musical landscape:
Future Bass: This genre, characterized by its euphoric drops and melodic synthesizers, has permeated the charts. Artists like Flume and The Chainsmokers have taken cues from this style, blending it seamlessly with pop lyrics and structures.
Tropical House: Acts like Kygo have popularized this breezy, laid-back variant of house music. Its summery and chilled vibes have made it a favorite on radio playlists.
Psytrance: This trance sub-genre with its fast-paced beats has seen mainstream popularity with tracks from artists such as Vini Vici and collaborations with pop icons like Armin van Buuren.
2. EDM’s Role in Festival Culture
Music festivals have traditionally celebrated a diverse range of genres. However, EDM-focused festivals like Tomorrowland, Ultra, and Electric Daisy Carnival have witnessed skyrocketing attendance. These festivals are not just music events; they've become cultural phenomena, influencing fashion, vernacular, and even mainstream media coverage. Their larger-than-life stage setups, light shows, and immersive experiences have set new standards for concert experiences.
3. Cross-genre Collaborations
One of the most telling signs of EDM's influence is the increasing number of collaborations between EDM producers and artists from other genres:
Pop stars like Dua Lipa and Selena Gomez have teamed up with producers like Calvin Harris and Marshmello, respectively.
Hip-hop and EDM have intertwined in tracks from artists such as Skrillex and A$AP Rocky.
Even rock bands like Coldplay have not remained untouched, as evidenced by their collaboration with The Chainsmokers on "Something Just Like This."
4. The Digitization and Democratization of Music Production
EDM’s rise has coincided with advancements in digital music production. Softwares like FL Studio and Ableton have made it easier for budding producers to experiment from their bedrooms. Platforms like SoundCloud have allowed them to share their creations with the world. This has led to an explosion of creativity and has paved the way for previously unknown artists to chart their course to stardom.
5. EDM’s Impact on Music Consumption Patterns
With streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music becoming dominant, the traditional album format has evolved. EDM artists often release singles or short EPs, capitalizing on the playlist culture. This change has influenced even non-EDM artists to shift towards releasing more singles and fewer albums.
6. Reimagining Live Performances
EDM artists have raised the bar for live performances. With advancements in technology, their shows have become a synesthetic experience, integrating visuals, lasers, and pyrotechnics. These elements, once exclusive to EDM concerts, are now expectations at mainstream pop events.
7. Addressing Social Issues
Artists like Avicii and Steve Aoki have used their platforms to address pressing societal issues, from mental health to political activism. The music and its accompanying videos often serve as commentaries on contemporary challenges, proving that EDM is not just about the beat but also about the message.
Conclusion
In the ever-evolving world of music, genres come and go, with only a few leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of pop culture. Over the past five years, EDM has not only established its presence but also reshaped the very contours of popular music. From its influence on the digital realm to its seamless amalgamation with other genres, EDM’s impact is vast, varied, and undeniable. As we move forward, it's evident that the echoes of its bass drops and synthesizer melodies will continue to reverberate through the annals of pop culture.

Week 9 Body Modification
Male Gaze vs Female Gaze.
male gaze
noun
the perspective of a notionally typical heterosexual man considered as embodied in the audience or intended audience for films and other visual media, characterized by a tendency to objectify or sexualize women.
"it's because of the male gaze that female characters are regularly eroticized”.
The term ‘female gaze’ on the other hand, is a relatively new term so it does not have 1 specific answer to it. However, it is understood that the term ‘female gaze’ is focused on the experience of women or what women find to be attractive.
The most perfect example of the male gaze and the female gaze is the portrayal of the DC character, Harley Quinn, in ‘Suicide Squad’, a film directed by a man and ‘Birds of Prey’, a film directed by a woman. In the film ‘Suicide Squad’, Harley is completely objectified, making her seem like a sex object. This is because her shorts are not beneficial for her in any way but is only worn to accentuate her buttocks. However, in her own film focusing on her character development, ‘Birds of Prey’, she is dressed in a colourful costume that is less revealing because instead of wearing little to nothing shorts, she wore long pants in ‘Birds of Prey’. So, to make it simple,
Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad = For the male gaze
Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey = For the female gaze
Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad certainly met the aesthetic template’s criteria, which meant focusing on enhancing certain body features and in Harley’s case, it is her thighs, buttocks, and breasts as we can see in this clip below.
youtube
That one particular shot from the film is the definition of what the male gaze is.
Furthermore, the term ‘Sex sells’ certainly does play a very important role in this week’s topic. This term means the usage of sexual imagery and themes to gain attention, interest, and sales, and this is where the word ‘pornification’ comes into play. Pornification applies emphasis on heteronormative standards of beauty and sexuality which can be quite damaging in the long run.
Meanwhile, the female gaze in ‘Birds of Prey’ is more focused on Harley’s character development and her backstory. In this film, it does not focus on sexualization, but it rather subverts the male gaze by focusing on the reactions.
In conclusion, the male gaze is very equivalent to pornification as it fits the aesthetic template, which is focused on poses and body work. This idea further reinforces heteronormative advertising models that are oriented towards a male audience and has become something that is normalised within western societies.

Body Modification and Self-Image in the Age of Visual Social Media
In today’s visually driven digital landscape, platforms like Instagram and TikTok shape our perceptions of beauty and body image in powerful ways. Body modification methods such as tattoos, piercings, plastic surgeries, and even filters. This has become a prevalent topic among social media users, creating conversations about these days' beauty standards, and cultural trends.
Tumblr media
To begin with, let us start with "What is body modification" you may ask? The word 'body modification' refers to a wide range of activities that include piercing, tattooing, branding, cutting, binding, and implanting to change the appearance and shape of the body (Featherstone 2005). This has been reported to be a popular trend recently, also. In recent decades, there has been a continuous increase in the number of people, especially adolescents, undergoing medical body modification (MBM) to change their physically healthy bodies in invasive and nearly permanent ways by surgical means (e.g., surgery) (Kohls & Roessner 2022).
Nowadays, information can spread rapidly thanks to the internet. Take the case of social media influencer and model Kylie Jenner, who has openly discussed her lip fillers, influencing countless followers to pursue similar enhancements. To make this more clear, Kylie expressed a wish to remove the misunderstanding that she made modifications to her face because she was 'insecure,' stating that she has always been confident and that her decision to undergo dermal fillers stemmed from a love of herself (Lang 2023). This highlights her influence on perceptions of self-confidence tied to cosmetic procedures. Moreover, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a significant spike in lip treatments in 2016, following Kylie's admission that she had lip filler (Lang 2023). This directly correlates with Kylie’s admission about lip fillers and the rising trend in cosmetic surgeries, particularly lip enhancement. While such transparency can ignite conversations about beauty standards and self-expression, it often comes with the potential risks that inherent in these procedures. This includes mental health impacts and bodily autonomy issues (Sarwer et al. 1998).
Tumblr media
The popularity of body modification content often leads to unrealistic beauty standards, pushing users to conform to idealized images. Back to the Kardashians, according to Hafeez & Zulfiqar in 2023, the Kardashians have influenced young women to believe that achieving the Kardashian figure requires intense exercise and a balanced diet. The truth is that they have undergone numerous surgical and cosmetic treatments to get their looks and continually modify their images (Hafeez & Zulfiqar 2023). The reconstructed ideal image was so heavily promoted that women began to exchange their true identities for 'reel' bodies that represented who they wanted to be (Hafeez & Zulfiqar 2023). The #PlasticSurgery hashtag on Instagram rakes in millions of views, showcasing before-and-after photos that can be inspiring but also misleading. Many users are unaware that these visual transformations can be significantly edited or filtered, blurring the line between reality and fabrication.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, the relationship between body modification and self-image on visual social media provides opportunities for self-expression while also challenging individuality. An example such as Kylie Jenner showcases how beauty standards are shaped while highlighting the complexities behind such choices. While these platforms can encourage conversations about self-confidence, they also perpetuate unrealistic ideals that impact mental health and body image.

The Dazzling Allure of Beauty Filters: A New Era in Digital Aesthetics
In the world of social media, beauty filters are such an intriguing tool, giving users a simple way to elevate their photos and videos. The Bold Glamour filter on TikTok is seriously changing the game, and it’s definitely stirring up some interesting conversations and debates.
Tumblr media
The Bold Glamour filter isn't just a cute accessory; it's a hyper-realistic game changer that totally revamps your look. Just a few taps and voilà! Your cheekbones are contoured, your nose is highlighted, your skin is smoothed out, and makeup effects are added with mind-blowing precision (SEA 2023). How cool is that? It's like having a glam squad right in your pocket. This filter is seriously impressive—it's so realistic that you can hardly tell if someone is even using it. Like, wow! It's wild how, no matter how you shift your face or hide bits of it, the filter just stays perfectly on point.
This may seem like a fantasy for some, but it definitely brings up some major issues. One of the main concerns is how it affects our perceptions of beauty. When flawless vibes are just a click away, it can totally warp what we think is real, especially for the younger crowd. Research indicates that being constantly bombarded with these perfect images can seriously harm how we view ourselves and our bodies. Using a filter can be a fun little escape, but when it turns into a daily necessity, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s real. That blurred line can seriously mess with your mental health.
Tumblr media
Also, the Bold Glamour filter on TikTok has sparked a lot of chatter about the ethical side of this kind of tech. There’s a growing chorus of voices urging social media platforms to step up and add warnings about the possible psychological effects of these filters. Just a reminder that beauty filters can be a fun way to play around with your appearance, but they definitely shouldn't determine how you feel about yourself.
Tumblr media
As we move through this wild digital landscape, let's keep our eyes wide open and question everything we encounter. The Bold Glamour filter really shows how much technology has evolved, but it also highlights the complicated issues that come with it.

The wellness market is witnessing a significant shift as concerns around male fertility and virility come to the forefront. Historically, men’s health products have been confined to the realms of muscle building and athletic performance. However, recent studies have highlighted alarming declines in sperm counts, prompting a fresh focus on reproductive health. A pivotal study from May 2023 revealed the presence of microplastics in every human testicle examined, echoing concerns about environmental contaminants affecting male fertility. This revelation is underscored by data suggesting that sperm counts have decreased by nearly 50% globally over the past five decades, with the decline accelerating since 2000. In light of these shifts, brands are pivoting towards solutions aimed at enhancing male fertility. USA's Vitamin Shoppe reports a double-digit surge in sales of testosterone support products. Companies like Mars Men and Human Desire are introducing innovative offerings, including natural testosterone support supplements and libido-enhancing beverages. As men become more cognizant of their reproductive health, wellness brands face the challenge of navigating a market marked by fragmentation. Marketing approaches must now resonate with male consumers’ evolving perceptions of masculinity and health optimization. Rather than positioning products purely as remedies, brands like Mars Men are emphasizing a broader narrative of overall well-being. While still confronting social stigmas, the de-stigmatization of discussions around male health is increasingly apparent. Men now actively seek out solutions for issues like low libido and energy, reflecting a desire for proactive engagement with their health. The challenge remains to effectively market these products in a manner that appeals to men, presenting them as essential elements of a well-rounded, modern lifestyle. In summary, as male infertility anxiety drives a growth in wellness trends, companies must adapt their strategies to meet both the needs and the changing attitudes of male consumers.

The Influence of the 'Aesthetic Template' on Body Modification Trends: How Social Media Shapes Our Faces
In the world of visual social media, the “aesthetic template” has emerged as a silent yet powerful guide influencing how people perceive themselves and, increasingly, how they modify their bodies. We’re all familiar with what this looks like the defined cheekbones, plump lips, symmetrical face, high eyebrows, and smooth, glowing skin that dominate Instagram feeds. This aesthetic ideal, known as the "Instagram face" has become so prevalent that it’s no longer just an aspirational look but, for many, a benchmark of beauty. The rise of this template shows how social media can set and enforce beauty standards, even to the point of shaping our physical self-image and encouraging body modification (Stuart 2024).
Tumblr media
💋The Instagram Face: From Filter to Filler
First off, what is the “Instagram face”? Imagine this: a symmetrical, ultra-defined look with features that pop off the screen. High cheekbones, big lips, narrow noses, a strong jawline,... all accentuated by heavy makeup or a smoothening filter. It’s a beauty standard we see on Instagram and spreading across TikTok, Snapchat, and Pinterest. While it may seem harmless, this specific template is becoming something people aren’t just putting on with makeup; it’s a look they’re actually seeking out in clinics and cosmetic offices (Tolentino 2019).
One of the most famous influencers associated with this look is Kylie Jenner. When Kylie openly talked about her lip fillers, it marked a shift where suddenly, lip fillers became mainstream, accessible, and cool. Soon enough, people weren’t just watching and liking these looks online; they wanted the real-life version of the “Instagram face”.
Tumblr media
📈 The Algorithm Factor: How Social Media Rewards the Aesthetic Template
So why does it feel like this look is absolutely “everywhere”? Blame it on the algorithms.
Social media algorithms are not neutral; they actively push content that aligns with popular aesthetic trends. Influencers with “Instagram faces” are rewarded by these algorithms with higher visibility, often appearing on Explore pages or in recommended posts (Adisa 2023) . This is not accidental: platforms like Instagram and TikTok have recognized that highly stylized, symmetrical faces attract more attention, resulting in longer engagement times. Consequently, users who fit or adapt to this aesthetic are more likely to gain followers and receive validation.
Over time, this leads to a feedback loop. Users adopt the “Instagram face” through makeup, digital filters, and even permanent cosmetic procedures like lip fillers, cheek fillers, and Botox injections to fit the ideal. The more people adapt to this aesthetic, the more normalized it becomes, which can push others to undergo similar changes to stay relevant or attractive within this beauty framework (Margalit 2021).
🧪 The Real-World Impact: Lip Fillers, Botox, and Beyond
When we think of social media trends, we imagine things that come and go. But the “Instagram face” has had a lasting impact on cosmetic procedures, becoming a real-life goal for many people.
Lip fillers, once a niche treatment, are now incredibly common, as are cheek fillers and Botox. Clinics have even noticed an uptick in younger clients, with people in their 20s coming in to achieve the high-cheekbone, smooth-skin look that’s so popular online. What’s interesting is that these procedures are often marketed as “tweaks” instead of full makeover, subtle enhancements that help users “look good for the ’gram” without drastic changes (Pearson-jones 2024).
Cosmetic enhancements that would have once been reserved for those with extra cash or specific beauty goals are now being considered beauty basics. As bizarre as it sounds, the “Instagram face”  is making these procedures feel less like indulgences and more like a part of the regular beauty routine.
Tumblr media
📣 The Health Dilemma: When Aesthetic Pressures Meet Mental Health
Here’s where things get sticky. While there’s nothing wrong with a little self-enhancement, the pressure to conform to this narrow look can lead to a distorted self-image. Psychologists are noticing trends like Snapchat dysmorphia, where people feel dissatisfied with their real-life appearance because they don’t match their filtered selfies. And it’s not just a few people; social media platforms are flooded with content that encourages users to fix their features to better match this ideal (Migala 2018)
Tumblr media
Public health campaigns are left trying to counter this influence, but it’s an uphill battle. While they’re working hard to promote positive self-image and diversity in beauty, it’s tough to compete with the never-ending scroll of flawless faces online. For some, seeing these images creates a “keep up or fall behind” mentality, where it feels like the only way to feel good about themselves is to match the trend.
🔍 What Can We Do?
Navigating this world of digital beauty and the aesthetic template can feel like a minefield, but a few steps can help make it a little healthier:
1. Be a conscious scroller: Understand that algorithms aren't showing you a wide view of beauty; they're showing what they think you'll engage with. Mixing up your feed with accounts that promote different types of beauty can be a game-changer.
2. support real beauty standards: Look for influencers and creators who embrace diversity in appearance, body types, and styles. It might not get as many likes, but it’s definitely better for self-esteem!
3. Think twice before the needle: Before jumping on a beauty trend, think about whether it’s something you truly want or just a response to what’s popular. Remember, trends come and go, but your face is forever.
In a world where our feeds shape the way we look at beauty (and maybe even our own faces), knowing the power of the “aesthetic template” is half the battle. Embracing a look that feels like “you” rather than the filtered version of everyone else? Now, that's the kind of beauty trend worth following.
